Digital trackers
MADTRACKER free VSTs & free Samples

Psycle Tracker

is a

free, Open-Source, music creation program.
It supports three ways to get sound: its own native format, the VST Plugin standard, and
recorded .wav samples using the sampler machine.

Psycle is a tracker combined with plugin modularity. It supports its own plugin API, the VST2 plugin
standard, and a tracker style sampler playback. qpsycle is the Linux version.

Audio plugin support : VST (LADSPA for Linux version); Import : PSY, MOD, S3M, XM, IT |
Export : PSY, WAV; MIDI support : yes
Notes are entered in patterns, where you can also use commands (plugin specific, or global), as well as
automating parameters via the mcm and twk commands. These patterns are then organized in a linear
sequence, which becomes the song order.

CheeseTracker is a software sampler
and step-based sequencer. It allows a musician to turn single-note samples into instruments capable of covering
three or four octaves (by playing the samples at different speeds, resulting in different pitches). In addition, it is

possible to take a collection of samples that are recorded at different octaves, and combine them into a single
"instrument", allowing for even more octaves without sampling artifacts.

Import : CT, IT, XM, S3M | Export : CT, IT, WAV

LittleGPTracker (a.k.a 'The piggy') is a music tracker
optimised to run on portable game consoles. It is currently running on Game Park's GP2x & Caanoo, PSP,
Dingoo, Windows, Mac OSX (intel/ppc) & Linux (Debian).
Piggy currently supports 8 monophonic 16Bit/44.1Khz stereo sample playback channels. Additionally,
the program can drive MIDI instruments (with the gp32 and gp2x a custom MIDI interface is required).

MilkyTracker is an open source, multi-platform music application for creating .MOD and .XM module
files. It attempts to recreate the module replay and user experience of the popular DOS
program Fasttracker 2, with special playback modes available for improved Amiga Protracker 2/3

Import : MOD, XM | Export : MOD, XM, WAV; MIDI support : yes
MilkyTracker's key features:

Fasttracker II like, custom graphical user interface with context menus
Supported on multiple platforms including portable devices
Very accurate .XM replay compared to FT2
ProTracker 2/3 playback modes for playing and editing .MOD files
Various resampler options including emulated - Amiga 500/1200 sound output
Choose between a modern and a true-to-FT2 editing scheme / keyboard layout
Tabbed user interface for opening and playing up to 32 modules simultaneously and for
exchanging data between them
Over 30 imported module formats
Basic archive support for loading zipped, powerpacked and UMX modules directly
Rendering songs/patterns to disk (.WAV) or directly to sample
Powerful sample editor featuring waveform generators

In-depth instrument editor featuring envelope zooming and scaling and support for copying and
swapping instruments and samples across tabs
Low latency audio driver support
MIDI In support
Module optimizer
Internal file browser option
Various font sizes for improved visibility of pattern data
Prospective pattern view option
Playing and editing simultaneously
Live mode for seamless pattern changes

A couple of facts:
MilkyTracker is not based on any common module replay. Its core MilkyPlay has been in development
since the mid-90s, originally as a Digitrakker .MDL player.
MilkyTracker development started a decade later for the Pocket PC and it still fully operates on rather
humble PDAs.
MilkyTracker is and will stay a 2nd generation tracker. There are already several good 3rd generation
trackers out there.

ProTrekkr (formerly known as
NoiseTrekker) is a tracker program combining a software synthesizer together with a traditional samples
tracker which can be used to create electronic music (like psytrance, trance goa, hard acid, IDM, chip,
techno, etc.) for small sized intros, demos or games.

Currently the tracker is available on Windows, Linux, Amiga OS4, AROS and Mac OSX. Check for more infos.

Renoise is a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) with a refreshing twist. It lets you record, compose, edit,
process and render production-quality audio using a tracker-based approach.
In a tracker, the music runs from top to bottom in an easily understood grid known as a pattern. Several
patterns arranged in a certain order make up a song. Step-editing in a pattern grid lends itself well to a
fast and immediate workflow. On top of this, Renoise features a wide range of modern features:
dozens of built-in audio processors, alongside support for all commonly used virtual instrument and
effect plug-in formats. And the software can be extended too: with scripting, you can use your entire
MIDI or OSC controller to control it in exactly the way you want.
Probably the most advanced tracker today! It has an integrated sampler and high quality mixer. ASIO
multi I/O cards support (for very low latency) with the ability to route tracks to hardware channels.
Support of Rewire mode.

Audio plugin support : native (DLL), VST, VSTi, AU, RTAS, LADSPA; Import : XRNS, RNS, PTK, NTK,
XM, IT, MOD, MI... | Export : XRNS, WAV; MIDI support : yes

SoundTracker is a music tracking tool for Unix / X11 similar in design to the DOS
program FastTracker and the Amiga legend ProTracker. Samples can be lined up on tracks and patterns
which are then arranged to a song. Supported module formats are XM and MOD; the player code is the
one from OpenCP. A basic sample recorder and editor is also included. SoundTracker is free ("open
source") software, licensed under the GNU GPL.
Finally, a module is a compact file containing various patterns and samples, including a position list
which specifies playback order of the patterns, forming a song. SoundTracker can load modules of the
popular XM and MOD formats. The very popular IT format is not supported at the moment.
Audio plugin support : no; Import : MOD, XM | Export : MOD, XM; MIDI support : yes

Tutka is a free (as in freedom) tracker style MIDI sequencer for GNU/Linux and Mac OS X. It is similar to
programs like SoundTracker, ProTracker and FastTracker except that it does not support samples and is
meant for MIDI use only. Tutka uses a custom XML based file format for storing songs. Songs in
OctaMED SoundStudio's MMD2 file format can also be loaded and saved. Tutka is licensed under
the GNU GPL.
In preparation for version 1.0 Tutka is being rewritten using Qt. There are no new features except
support for Mac OS X. The rewrite may have caused some regressions but the intention is to iron these
out as soon as they are found. The source code for the Qt version (0.99.x) is available from the Tutka Git

People often mention Reaper as a free VST host, but please note that Reaper is actually commercial
software with a 30-day trial period. Although the actual software installation never expires, you
shouldpurchase a licence if you use it longer than 30 days (there is however Reaper v0.999 which is
stillavailable for free, many thanks to vian for sharing the info in the comments!).
MuLab FREE is my favorite freeware VST host application. Even with the 4-track limit of the free version,
it is still a very powerful modular VST host which will let you create some crazy FX and instrument chains
using your favorite VSTs.
Podium Free is without a doubt your best choice if you’re looking for a full-featured freeware DAW. The
only serious limitation of the free version is that it uses a single CPU core, but the amount of features
available at no cost is simply insane. It is very stable, perfectly designed, and definitely worth checking
out (as well as the Pro version).

Podium FREE by Zynewave.
Usine Free, LiveProfessor, Rack Performer, VstBoard and Cantabile Lite are VST hosts suitable for live
use, Usine currently being the most popular one.
Psycle is a free tracker which also works as a VST host. I must admit i’m not very experienced with
trackers, but I know there are many people who don’t use sequencers at all and go for trackers instead,
so this one’s for them.
SAVIHost, MiniHost and VSTHost are lightweight and easy to use VST host applications, perfect for
quickly testing new VST plugins.
KRISTAL Audio Engine is an interesting 16-track sequencer which can load VST effects, but unfortunately
doesn’t support MIDI, hence no VST instruments can be used.
Feel free to leave comments suggesting other free VST host applications I may have missed and I’ll
include them in the list.
Many thanks to Ronnie for suggesting LMMS, a free cross-platform VST host application which is a great
alternative to commercial loop-based programs like FL Studio, Greg for suggesting Jeskola
Buzz andDarkWave Studio, two pretty awesome free VST hosts (and also Scooty!), bonzo for
suggesting OpenMPT,Alex_HS for suggesting Macaw, and gropkcor for suggesting Rax’n’Trax! Finally, a
big thank you to sattfor suggesting Tunafish, a lovely old school sequencer!

Quick GLITCH SEQUENCER tutorial; Documentation

This application does not try to compete with the big boys like NI Traktor or Deckadence, but it still has
an interesting set of features:

Allows DJs to alter the structure of songs while playing them: parts can be repeated, skipped, paused and

Tracks are automatically beat-matched and therefore always play in sync.
Powerful filters and effects allow the DJ to sculpt the sound to his/her liking.
The integrated browser facilitates the selection of songs. It lets the DJ preview the structure of songs and
listen to them on a second audio device.
The built in recorder allows DJs to record their mixes without the need for additional equipment.
The integrated BeatMapper lets users analyze the rhythmic structure of songs.
Different computers running Jackson can be networked. In such a configuration several DJs can play
together in perfect sync: all tracks on all computers are automatically beat-matched.
Sliders can be controlled by physical midi controllers. This allows for fast, tactile control and simultaneous
changes to different sliders.
Can generate a MIDI clock signal to tempo-sync external midi equipment.
A real time oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer is available for the techie DJ.

PianoRollComposer 2.45 is a MIDI Sequencer for composing and playing music.
PianoRollComposer uses the standard treble and bass clef staffs. Notes are displayed in the piano roll
format, so it shows music with absolute accuracy. Notes are entered directly on the staffs, and you can
edit each note to give it the exact characteristics you want. You can input and edit any of 128 MIDI
instruments and 61 percussion instruments. If you have a MIDI keyboard, you can play and record any
instrument with it. A composition can contain music from 15 instruments and all the percussion
instruments. The music created with it can be played by any MIDI player, and can be shown in standard
music notation by programs like Notation Player. PianoRollComposer can play and display any MIDI
music. Music from different instruments (different MIDI channels) is placed on the same staffs, with
different colors to differentiate them.
VST plugins can be used, as well as any SoundFonts.
Darker or lighter colors differentiate sharps or flats. Instruments can be selected to be played and
shown, or not played and shown. You can move a note left or right. Right-click on it to change its note
type, volume, instrument master volume, beats/minute, and beginning and end positions. A note's
parameters can be shown on-screen when the mouse passes over it. Music can be transposed up or
down. Groups of notes can be copied or cut and pasted. Pressing the Delete key deletes a note that the
mouse cursor is over. You can insert or delete vertical spaces on the staffs. Key and time signatures can

be entered and displayed. You can change instruments for music already created (including percussion
instruments). A beat is provided (by a selected percussion instrument) when entering music with a
keyboard -- either without music showing on the staffs or when adding to music on the staffs after that
existing music has finished playing. A virtual piano keyboard is included.

and arrangers. BlueARP can be also characterised as: pattern arpeggiator, step sequencer style
arpeggiator, arpeggiator with pattern input."

Tyrell is the name of a project by the German online magazine A reader survey and followon forum posts provided a pool of ideas for a low-cost HARDWARE analogue Synth, which Mic
'Moogulator' Irmer collected and used to develop quite a powerful concept. Based on a design similar to
Roland's classic Juno 60, a few modules and novel features could be added without making the product
too expensive...
However, it soon became obvious that developing the hardware would have taken years, so I (Urs)
offered to turn the core design into a freeware SoftSynth. That was late 2010. Only a few weeks later,
Tyrell N6 was out for beta testing! After some serious bug-fixing and fine tuning, the final release version
became available in April 2011.
