Organisation 1
Description
The first organisation I will look at that uses science in the workplace is “Bobs nuts and bolts”. Bobs nuts and bolts design and engineer precision nut and bolts for use in construction, vehicles and machinery.

Location
The address of Bob’s nuts and bolts is: 25 High street Any town Kent DA3 8YT Any town is an ideal location for siting the factory because Any town has a large population of skilled nuts and bolt workers. A social reason for siting the factory in the high street is that it is on 5 bus routes in the town and is very easy to get to. An economic reason for the location of the factory is that it is very close to the motorway which provides easy transport links for suppliers and customers of Bob’s nuts and bolts, which cuts down on transportation time and costs. An environmental reason for the location of the factory is that at this end of the High street, the wind blows all the smoke from the factory chimneys out of the town. A scientific reason for the location of Bobs Nuts and bolts is that there are lots of similar types of small engineering factories in Any town, so they all share their expertise in their specialised fields of engineering with each other.

Jobs at the organisation:
Here are the job titles of the people who work at Bob’s nuts and bolts and the qualifications required: Job title Furnace watcher Tool sharpener Nut and bolt designer Machine operative Nut and bolt polisher Nut and bolt packager Nut and bolt inspector Qualifications required 3 GCSE’s at grade G or above 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above University degree in tool design A levels or equivalent in technology or science subjects NVQ in metal polishing none General engineering degree

The jobs that require a good understanding of science at Bob’s nuts and bolts are the nut and bolt designer, machine operative and the nut and bolt inspector.

An explanation of how the qualifications and skills enable the employees of the organisation to carry out their jobs:
A furnace watcher needs to have good attendance so they can keep the furnaces burning and they need skills in observation so that the fires do not get out of control. Having these qualifications and skills enables their employer at Bob’s nuts and bolts to have the confidence to allow furnace watchers more responsibility in their management of the furnace. A tool sharpener needs to have a critical eye for exactly when a tool needs to be sharpened. Having good GCSE’s enables them to demonstrate to their employer at Bobs nuts and bolts that they have developed these skills in critical analysis. Nut and bolt designers must have an excellent working knowledge of nut and bolt design and be able to ‘think outside of the box’ when it comes to producing exiting new designs

in nut and bolt manufacturing. For these skills, a relevant degree and recent experience in the field are essential. A machine operative must be an expert at using their equipment, and be able to detect when there are problems. They should be able to fix simple problems and seek help from their team leader when more difficult problems occasionally arise. Their qualifications enable them to problem solve and to communicate effectively. A nut and bolt polisher learns how to polish nuts and bolts professionally through work experience and while training for their NVQ, which they study for ‘on the job’. They also need excellent manual dexterity and good eyesight. A nut and bolt packager needs no qualifications and this job is often carried out by inexperienced or casual labour. The job involves putting packets of nuts and bolts in boxes, and is carried out on a production line conveyor belt. No qualifications are needed because it is such an easy job to do and requires no training.

How employees in the organisation use science
Employees in Bob’s nuts and bolts use science when they carry out the following: • • • • • Extract the metals in the furnace Design their nuts and bolts Use precision machinery to manufacture their nuts and bolts Measure their nuts and bolts accurately Polish their nuts and bolts
