On Saturday 28th June our School Formal was held at Simpson Park. The theme was The Orient. The hall was brilliantly decorated in keeping with this theme; design and decoration being the responsibility of Brooke, Taylor and Holly supported by teachers Mrs Murray and Mrs Holgate. This set the scene for an amazing night. Our seventeen year 11-13 students were joined by seventy peers from: Roxburgh, Catlins, SOHS, BMC, Toko, Dunstan and other Otago Secondary Schools. The photos provide evidence of a great evening, the smiles a genuine indication of the fun had by all. The boys looked dapper in their suits, the girls looked outstanding in the evening gowns. Great music encouraged everyone to dance. Great food provided the necessary energy to do so. It was a fabulous formal. A huge thanks is extended to Mrs Holgate and Mrs Murray for organising this event, thanks is extended to their many students and parent helpers. An event such as this is a huge amount of work, an important show case for our senior students. Congratulations to everyone involved. During the holiday break Kate, joined by parents, accompanied our students to New Zealand Area Schools Annual Tournament in Nelson. Fourteen students were a part of Southern Teams which competed in a round robin against Canterbury/Top of the South, Far North and Central North teams in a range of sports: Netball, Rugby, Football, Volleyball and Basketball. Competition was tough, teams had to build cohesion and work hard to match their opponents - full report on our school blog site http://lawrenceareaschool.edublogs.org/ Our students participated brilliantly with some playing three codes, keeping very busy. As the week progressed teams were selected for the South Island, which they played against the North Island, with selection being made from this game for New Zealand Teams a real honour. Well done to all. Special congratulations to those making South Island and New Zealand teams. A huge thanks goes to Kate for managing all aspects of this event, financial, accommodation, travel, equipment, fundraising, managing and coaching. Thanks goes to Debbie Shaw and Janine Lyders our parent helpers, and to those Mums and Dads who travelled to Nelson to support. Science/Biology/Chemistry Walking down the alleyway at 6.30am doesnt seem like the typical time to get mugged and beaten to a pulp right? I thought punks needed sleep to prepare for another night of mugging elderly people but apparently not the guy that blindsided me. A glancing blow connected with my head as a guy dressed in what I can only assume was a try hard boxer/joggers outfit ducked behind me. I clutched my face as he went in for round two. Another blow clattered my teeth together as I slipped on the frosted earth. I hit the ground and felt the air leave my body. I groaned as pain seared through my head. Callous hand ruffled my pockets. Coins, my phone and other belongings littered the pavement below. I lay winded. A light in my numb brain lethargically flickered on; it felt like I was drugged. Away with the fairys, some would say. However, as much as my brain started resenting me, I decided then and there I wasnt going to stand for this. No bloody way. Hey stop! I demanded. This fell on deaf ears while the punk was riffling through the contents of my wallet. I soared off the ground and ran over to my attacker like out of some corny super hero movie, where the random citizen arbitrarily turns out to have hidden super-poweres he had no idea about. Okay, obviously I wasnt that guy. A thousand soldiers marched behind me, preparing for battle to protect the odds and ends that had until recently been in my pockets. My aggressor was gathering my belongings his eyes like golden beckons. I tapped him on the shoulder, he turned and gave me a What ya gunna do about it, look. He raised his fist and pulled it back, in my head I was thinking of all these awesome Kung-Fu moves that I could never pull off in my wildest of dreams. The clenched hand slammed into my nose letting a hot flow of crimson substance run down over my lips and chin. Caught unaware, the no good punk hit me while I was down. I fell to my knees and slid to the ground. My eyes fastened as the predator ran from his prey. A warm ray of sunshine goodness tickled my face. Birds no longer chirped their merry little song; the thick smog of traffic blundered past. I kept my eyes closed, which wasnt hard due to sad face they were bruised and puffy. Being the positive guy I am I thought Id savour the moment. Then the previous events became reality. A cat meowed in the distance, Ive always hated cats. A door slammed. Footsteps echoed up the very alleyway I was in, a trash bag was dropped and its contents littered the ash felt. A gulp of air was choked back; the poor guy probably thought I was dead. I opened my inflamed eyes, in all honesty it felt like that moment when you had to rip off a tremendously sticky plaster. You dont understand the struggle. A ruffled stranger asked me, You alright mate? I didn't know how to reply to his simple question. His face loomed above me as he held out a hand. I tensely sat up, my brain screamed painfully in protest. It hasnt been the best day of my life, I replied. Stars danced across the insides of my eyelids; I weakly shook my head as an ambulance siren gave a lowly wail in the distance streets.
