ROLE-PLAY SITUATION A

STUDENT A
Instructions: With a partner, role-play the following situations. How would you respond to the
conflicts assertively?
You are a third year student from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UTM. You have
registered for UHB3052 course (Effective Oral Communication Skills) during the pre-registration
week mainly because you heard from your senior that the course does not have final
examination. You feel that this will lessen your burden at the end of the semester and
therefore, allows you to concentrate on other courses.
When you attended the first class meeting, you learned that the course (UHB3052) has
several oral assessments including impromptu speech and public speaking. You do not think
you could handle these challenges especially the public speaking assessment. You also feel that
it is not easy for students to obtain grade A in this course. You decide to change to UHB3042
(Writing for Specific Purposes) because your friends said it is easier to get an A compared to
other three courses. You also do not prefer UHB3032 (Reading for Specific Purposes) and
UHB3022 (English for Workplace Communication).
Present your case to the program coordinator so that he/her allows you to change the
course. Give reasons why you want to change the course.

ROLE-PLAY SITUATION B
STUDENT B
Instructions: With a partner, role-play the following situations. How would you respond to the
conflicts assertively?

You are the Language Academy program coordinator. You normally do not entertain
students request for changing sections or courses due to several reasons. You believe that
students should do some homework before they decide which course to enroll for.
Based on students registration, you find out that students preferred UHB3052 (Effective
Oral Communication Skills), mainly because there is no final exam. You have already turned
down requests by many other students who are genuinely interested to enroll for UHB3052
course during the registration week since all the sections are full.
Just before you leave your office, a student comes and requests to change his/her
course from UHB3052 (Effective Oral Communication Skills) to UHB3042 (Writing for Specific
Purposes). You have been working on students course registration for the whole day and you
are already tired and are ready to go home. And you dont like the reasons given by the
student.
Listen to the students case and respond appropriately.
