Good music and a won-

A petting zoo, inflata-

crafts, face painting and
the Yellow Belly Saloon,
were all part of the the

The city council
unanimously approved
an agreement with the
Macomb County
Animal Shelter to trans-
fer animal control ser-
vices from the city to
Macomb County.
The city dabbled in
these services during
the month-long suspen-
sion of city animal con-
trol officer Tom Massey
a suspension that
came as a result of the
Lexie shooting incident
in Nov. 2013.
Late last year we had
a circumstance where
we were using the
Macomb County
Animal Shelter and
their animal control of-
ficers when we had an
employee who was off
on a disciplinary leave,
interim city manager
Mike Smith said. At
that time we were quite
impressed with the
manpower that was
provided by Macomb
County and the amount
of training those folks
had, the equipment
they had that we didnt
have, the power those
individuals have, they
are sworn officers so
they can issue citations.
When we saw the high
level of training, the
equipment, we started
talking with the county
about this.
Many communities
have the service provid-
ed to them as part of
their taxes with the
shelter, Smith said, and
for the past several
months he and mem-
bers of his staff have
been working out the
details and crunching
the numbers of using
animal control services
provided by the county
instead of the citys ani-
mal control officer.
St. Clair Shores will
be the first city to actu-
ally contract out the ser-
vices.
This is a proposal
that I believe will not
only provide us with a
great level of service,
Smith said. But it will
save us some money at
the same time.
The contract with the
county would cost the
city about $88,000 per
year.
This number com-
pared with what the city
currently spends on the
position, wages and
benefits only, which is
about $92,000 per year,
without the inclusion of
equipment and other

In July, the Michigan Department of Education
released the results of the Michigan Merit Exam.
Lakeview Public Schools did quite well,
Superintendent Karl Paulson said.
Lakeview is in excellent academic condition
again as a result of the strategic planning that
dates back to 2009-10, Paulson said.
Lakeviews results showed one-year gains of 12
percent in proficiency rates for both reading and
writing.
A reading proficiency score of 66 percent and a
writing proficiency of 67 percent put Lakeview in
the topof all schools in Macomb County.
Results for math, science and social studies were
also up, 4 percent, 7 percent and 9 percent, respec-
tively, according to results.
More drastic improvements can be found when
looking at the districts performance over the past
four years.
Reading proficiency is up 22.6 percent; writing
up 34 percent; math up 11.5 percent, science up
12.9 percent and social studies up 15.8 percent.
At Lakeview, we believe quality programs and
excellent staff provide the foundation for excellent
results, Paulson said. This really is a team effort,
and Im proud of our teachers and parents who
partner with us in accomplishing great outcomes
for students.
Much of this success can be attributed to the dis-
tricts proactive approach and the use of individual
student data, from Kindergarten through 12th
grade.
This data is then used to develop interventions
based on student needs.
MME score trends are up across the board,
Lakeview High School Principal Brent Case said.
The hard work of our teachers and our school
improvement strategies are paying off for stu-
dents.

was the music.
Ive been dancing for
like three hours,
Danielle Zmed, 12, said.
Its good music.
Popular local country
bands such as Taylor
Tucky, Joey Vee,
Shotguns and Violins
and Alan Turner filled
the summer air with
country music, while a
second stage featured
more traditional country
offerings, including
acoustic bluegrass mu-
sic.
This diversity in style
didnt go unnoticed by
those who paid their $3

expenses.
When I factor all that
in, Smith said. Even
considering the fact that
we will have to give up
our dog licensing fees to
the county, I think its go-
ing to be a savings to us in
the long run. I think were
going to have a great level
of service. I just think this
makes complete sense.
Im not happy with how
we had to find out about
the county and how great
they are, but it was an op-
portunity that presented
itself.
There is an opt-out
clause in the contract for
the city should the rela-
tionship with the county
go south or the city be-
come dissatisfied with the
service, Mayor Kip Walby
pointed out.
The contract eliminates
the citys animal control
position, meaning the cur-
rent officer would be reas-
signed to another depart-
ment within the city.
I want to commend Mr.
Smith for his work on
this, Councilwoman
Candice Rusie said. I
have great confidence
they are going to provide
a great service to our resi-
dents. Im really excited to
see this tonight.
The contract includes
animal control officers
available 24 hours a day,
seven days per week, and
this service is still accessi-
ble to residents by calling
the St. Clair Shores Police
Departments non-emer-
gency number.
Its a good program,
Smith said.

Know Your Skin

Tere is a common misconception
that people of color cannot and
do not get skin cancer. Tis group
includes people with African,
Latino, Asian or Middle Eastern
descent. Although the risk of
developing skin cancer is lower
than in Caucasians, people of color
are not immune to any type of skin
cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma is the most
common skin cancer among
people of Hispanic, Chinese and
Japanese descent. Squamous cell
carcinoma is the most common
type of skin cancer among
African-Americans. It tends to
be more aggressive in these
populations, with a 20-40 percent
risk of metastasis (spreading to
other organs).
Although melanoma, the deadliest
form of skin cancer, is less likely
to occur in people of color,
it is frequently fatal in these
populations. Tis is likely due to
the fact that it is usually diagnosed
at a more advanced stage, at
which time treatment options are
limited. Te fve year survival rate
for African Americans is only 73
percent compared to 91 percent in
Caucasians. Melanoma in people
of color most ofen occurs on the
scalp, palms, soles, under nails and
mouth.
Early detection is key to
successful treatment. People of
color should perform regular skin
self-examinations and inform their
dermatologist of any suspicious
lesions. Look for lesions that are
changing, itching, bleeding, non-
healing or just diferent from all
your other spots.
Everyone, regardless of skin
color, should take these steps
necessary to minimize their risk of
skin cancer. Tis includes applying
and reapplying a sunscreen with at
least an SPF 30 to all sun exposed
areas. Also seek shade whenever
possible and wear sun protective
clothing, with a wide brimmed hat
and sunglasses.

Theresa Bertolini, plaque in hand, stands with members of the Historical Commission and her dog, Molly,
just moments after the dedication ceremony.
Scattered throughout
the city are houses of his-
torical significance.
Several times each
year, the citys Historical
Commission honors
these structures with a
very unique and distin-
guished designation a
historical marker.
The commission's lat-
est recipient is the house
belonging to Theresa
Bertolini, located along
Jefferson Avenue north
of Masonic, the lakefront
house is more than a cen-
tury old.
Bertolinis house is one
of several already part of
a program that is relative-
ly obscure, Historical
Commission chairman
Jerry Sielagoski said.
The structure has to
be built before 1951, he
said. Which is quite a
few structures in the city.
But, so far, there have on-
ly been eight or nine his-
torical markers present-
ed.
Homeowners need to
take the initiative and
complete an application
for the program along
with documentation re-
garding the age of the
structure, Sielagoski said.
Proof may consist of a
copy of the original deed,
photographs of the exte-
rior or an assessors
property and land listing,
among other documenta-
tion.
Once the application
and documentation has
been submitted to the
commission, the group
meets to decide whether
the criteria has been met.
If it has, then the home-
owner is required to re-
mit a payment of $125 for
the historical marker it-
self.
A dedication ceremony
is scheduled following
these steps where mem-
bers of the commission
formerly present the
structures owner with a
historical marker, com-
pleye wwith the date of
construction in promi-
nant letters.
Gold lettering desig-
nates a structure more
than 100 years old, while
silver lettering is used to
designate structures not
yet a century old.

ture.
We usually schedule
the dedication ceremo-
ni es quar t er l y,
Sielagoski said. So there
isnt too long of a wait be-
fore the ceremony is put
on the calendar.
Part of the commis-
sions duty is to recognize
the unique history of the
city, Sielagoski said, and
this program is one way
the group can accomplish
this task.
I think its a great pro-
gram, he said. Finding
out the history of a struc-

very interesting and very
worth while.

For years the library
has been hosting block
parties for children.
These events are very
popular, according to
youth services librarian
Liz Drewek, and give all
children the opportunity
to use their creativity and
imagination in construct-
ing projects out of Lego-
style blocks.
Beginning at 6 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 20, the
block party program at
the library is adding a
twist.
Honestly, the teens
came to us and said they
would like to have their
own block party,
Drewek said. So we
said, Sure, why not.
The teen block party is
the first of its kind at the
facility and allows teens
ages 11 and up to spend
more then two hours so-
cializing, creating and
constricting block cre-
ations.
Its a free- build, she
said. So there wont be
any challenges or proj-
ects for them like we do
with the younger chil-
dren. Theyre just going
to build what they feel
like building. Itll be fun.
Drewek said the party
will be directed by the
teens, so the addition of
challenges is a possibility.
Its really going to be
up to them how it goes,
she said.
The library is providing
food for the party, but
party-goers are asked to
bring their own beverag-
es.
Were going to have
things to snack on,
Drewek said, with a
chuckle. But it might be
a case where everyone is
too busy building to want
to stop and eat. I doubt it,
but who knows.
There is no pre-regis-
tration required, and the
event is free.
You just have to
show up, Drewek said.
And be ready to have a
good time. Thats it.

A little exercise is al-
ways a good thing.
Its even better when
this exercise can raise
money for a worthy
cause.
The organizers of the
2014 Miles for Meals
5K/1 Mile Fun Run and
Walk, presented by Roy
OBrien Ford, are look-
ing for as many people
as possible to turn a little
exercise into a lot of cash
for the St. Clair Shores
Senior Center for Active
Adults meals program.
The program serves
over 7,000 meals each
year, senior center di-
rector Sue Fickau said.
And it takes a fund to
keep this going, for us to
be able to continue this
program.
The meals program at
the center is recognized
as one of the top in the
entire state and services
not only St. Clair Shores
senior citizens, but those
in need of a healthy meal
from all over the area.
This fun run and walk,
which is part of the 2014
Made in Michigan
Market festival, is just
one way Fickau and her
staff, along with volun-
teers, hope to offset
some of the cost of the
program.
Were working in part-
nership with Race
Services and High Five
Races, Fickau said. So
this is going to be a timed
and very well organized
race. That, we hope, will
add some appeal to more
serious runners.
"But, its a fun run and
walk, too. We encourage
everyone to come out.
Bring your family,
friends, coworkers, ev-
eryone and anyone can
enjoy it. And, its raising
money for a really good
cause.
The cost of the run for
those who preregister is
$25 for the 5K and $15
for the 1 mile.
Registration informa-
tion, along with an ap-
plication, can be found
at madeinmichiganmar-

Race-day registration
is also available, Fickau
said, but the cost rises to
$30 for the 5K and $20
for the 1 mile run/walk.

The Shorewood
Kiwanis Harper Charity
Cruise roars into town
Wednesday, Aug. 27,
which still gives car buffs
plenty of time to work up
their appetite for classic
cars and hot rods.
However, what many
might forget, is the fact
that it takes more than a
fair share of funds to
bring this event to that
stretch of Harper Avenue
between Old 8 Mile Road
and Martin each year.
It takes tens-of-thou-
sands of dollars, in fact,
to bring the Harper
Charity Cruise to life,
Event raises
money for
Harper
Cruise

The Harper Charity Cruise is gearing up to head into town Aug. 27. However, a fundraiser at G. Willies
Aug. 14 will help cover the costs of the event.
and this money doesnt
just fall from the sky
its raised.
There are lots of ex-
penses involved with the
cruise, Karen Biafora,
who is the public rela-
tions representative for
the event, sai d.
Everything from insur-
ance to licenses, a lot of
things. We really rely on
sponsorships and fund-
raising to offset these
costs. Without it, it just
doesnt happen.
Charges for police
presence and other items
are also part of the reality
for cruise organizers,
making the success of
fundraisers even more vi-
tal.
Every dollar makes a
difference, she said.
One of these fundrais-
ers takes place at 7 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 14, at G
Wi l l i es Bar and
Restaurant, located on
Harper Avenue just north
of 13 Mile.
G. Willies is an in-kind
sponsor of the cruise,
Biafora said. And in-
stead of just giving mon-
ey to the cruise, theyre
going to throw a party.
The party is open to
anyone and everyone
who wishes to join in the
fun Biafora said.
All you have to do is
show up around 7 p.m.,
or anytime that night, re-
ally, she said.
Biafora explained how
dining at G. Willies Aug.
14 would help the
Shorewood Kiwanis and
in turn, the cruise.
G. Willies is going to
donate a portion of the
proceeds from all the
food sold that night to
sponsor the Harper
Charity Cruise, she ex-
pl a i ne d. And,
Shorewood Kiwanis
members are going to be
there to sell 50/50 tickets
and to make the event
even more fun for peo-
ple.
Along with raffle tick-
ets, cruise T-shirts will al-
so be available for pur-
chase.
Were going to have
advance shirts there,
too, Biafora said.
Normally, the shirts are
bought at the cruise itself,
but you can buy one in
advance at G. Willies that
night. This way, you can
wear your shirt to the
cruise instead of waiting
until you get there to buy
one.
The Harper Charity
Cruise is Shorewoods
largest fundraising
event, with money raised
from the cruise, and any
of the 50-or-so other
Shorewood Kiwanis ac-
tivities and events, going
to a variety of worthy
charities, projects and
events throughout the
area.
Just come to G.
Willies on Aug. 14 begin-
ning at 7 p.m., Biafora
said. Have some fun.
Have some great food.
Buy a 50/50 ticket. Buy
an advance T-shirt and
have a great time.

One of the most trendy
and popular events in the
country is coming to the
city beginning at 9 a.m.
and concluding at 3 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 27, start-
ing at the Beaumont
Family Medical Center at
11 Mile and Harper.
Beaumont Family
Medicine is bringing a
colorful SPLASH: Color
Your Way to Health event
to town in honor of the
city hosting the Detroit
Institute of Arts Inside/
Out Program, and to
show the community the
health benefits the arts
can have on people.
The purpose of
SPLASH is to empower
and educate the St. Clair
Shores community about
the benefits art has to
health, Dr. Asha
Shajahan said.
Dancing, for just 30
minutes per week, she
said, can be an effective
treatment for depression.
Any artists activity can
lower your heart rate, re-
spiratory rate, and even
decrease the stress hor-
mone, cortisol, in your
body, she said.
There are numerous
studies that demonstrate
the positive relationship
between the engagement
of the creative arts and
health outcomes, she
said. Art-based interven-
tions, whether its visual,
music therapy, move-
ment-based expressions
such as dance, are effec-
tive in deducting adverse
physiological and psycho-
logical conditions.
The event features a
run/walk ranging from a
colorful 1-mile run to 5K
walk with each kicking
off at Lakeview High
School, among other
things.
The walk and run will
be highlighted by use of
non-toxic, environmen-
tally safe, easily wash-
able, vegetable-based col-
or dyes that are going to
be splashed on partici-
pants of the event.
The event is also slated
to include live perfor-
mances by the Grosse
Pointe Theater, and the
Det r oi t Medi cal
Orchestra, free interac-
tive dance classes, two
bus tours through the city
showing off the DIA
Inside/Out artwork, edu-
cational workshops on
health and wellness, a
mini-art gallery featuring
artwork from the local
high schools, and a high
school art competition.
The SPLASH event also
includes nearly two dozen
exhibitors providing
hands-on artisitc demon-
strations, guest speakers
and classes on relaxation
techniques.
Engagement with the
arts, either as an observer
or participant can actually
enhance moods, reduce
pain, decrease depres-
sion, anxiety and stress
and even aid in the symp-
toms dementia, she said.
I really do believe in the
benefits of art and medi-
cine. My own mother is
suffering from dementia
and Ive seen such a dif-
ference when she partici-
pates in art. I really have
seen a great difference.
We believe fine art is great
medicine.

The Bruce Post VFW Post 1146 is
reaching a milestone in 2014.
The popular post is celebrating its 80th
anniversary, and has come a long way
since its inception, current Post
Commander Tim Litz said.
With over 1,400 members currently
calling the post home, the St. Clair
Shores fixture is the largest in the state
and ranks among the top 20 in the
United States.
The post began in 1934 in a garage,
with four founding members, and has
steadily grown since humble beginnings
The facilitys current location, on
Jefferson just north of 11 Mile Road, has
been home to the Bruce Post VFW since
1954.
Mens and womens auxiliary, ritual
teams, junior girls banquet rooms, a wa-
terfront gazebo and an outdoor pavilion
are just part of the charm of the post.
Since its inception, the post has taken
great pride in community involvement
this legacy continues to this day.
A fish fry, classic car shows on Friday
nights, karaoke, tribute music shows
and other events are all open to the pub-
lic, and just part of the way the post gets
involved in the city.
A VFW charter reaching 80 years old
is quite an accomplishment, Litz said.
Especially since we have seen very
rough times with the fluctuations of the
economy.

Say hello to Bossy. This sweet little girl is
about four months old and was found roaming
the streets of Detroit. Luckily, she was rescued
by Mutts of Motown and is now looking for a

Yukon is big,
muscular,
versatile,
comfortable
and safe seeing is be-
lieving.
Our 2015 GMC Yukon
SLT test vehicle was load-
ed with active and passive
safety features that were
not exactly visible but
were at the ready if need-
ed. Icons on the instru-
ment panel or lights on
the outside mirrors might
indicate a system is func-
tioning such as the sys-
tem that alerts the driver
to a vehicle passing on ei-
ther side.
Todays automakers
are making standard or
offering as options a wide
range of new technology
that can foresee prob-
lems, ameliorate un-
avoidable crashes and
protect passengers.
A simple example: GM
offers a front seat center-
mounted air bag on mod-
els with front bucket
seats. This air bag has
been designed to provide
additional protection to
drivers and front passen-
gers in far-side impact
crashes, where the affect-
ed occupant is on the op-
posite, non-struck side of
the vehicle.
The wise consumer will
check to see which fea-
tures are included on the
Yukon model of choice
and which may be avail-
able at additional cost.
The shopping list in-
cludes: side blind zone
alert, lane change alert,
rear cross traffic alert and
crash imminent braking.
With the forward colli-
sion alert system, a cam-
era mounted behind the
inside rearview mirror
detects when a driver is at
risk of hitting the vehicle
ahead. A visual alert
shows on the instrument
cluster and the wind-

shield, and the Safety
Alert Seat will pulse sev-
eral times to warn the
driver. This is standard
on SLT and Denali mod-
els, and available on SLE.
The blind zone alert is
critical with a big vehicle
like the Yukon, whose var-
ious roof pillars and head-
rests make over-the-shoul-
der lane checks next to
useless. Based on a short-
range radar system locat-
ed in the rear quarter pan-
els, the system can detect
vehicles in adjacent lanes
and flash a lighted signal
on the outside mirrors.
Similarly, lane change
alert uses the blind zone
sensors to warn the driver
of fast-approaching vehi-
cles up to 230 feet distant
in the adjacent lane.
In spite of riding high in
a full-size sport utility vehi-
cle, one cant always see
cross traffic. We recom-
mend rear cross traffic
alert for anyone who
backs down a driveway or
out of a parking space.
Crash imminent brak-
ing automatically applies
your brakes to reduce
speed and soften the blow,
so to speak, if an imminent
crash is detected. Driver
inattention or slow re-
sponse would be helped
by such a system, and
chances are we all have
had many occasions when
our focus was not on our
driving.
The test GMC Yukon
SLT had all the bells and
whistles. The SLT four-
wheel-drive model itself
has a $57,735 price tag. Its
5.3-liter V-8 engine pro-
duces 355 horsepower
with 383 pound-feet of
torque.
The factory in Arlington,
Texas, gilded the lily with
an assortment of options
including a sun and enter-
tainment package sun-
roof and rear-seat fold-
down screen for DVDs
and such for $3,255.
Twenty-inch polished alu-
minum wheels tacked
$1,400 to the price. A
trailering package, sec-
ond-row power fold seats
and a theft-deterrent sys-
tem brought the total to
$64,520, with destination.
The Yukon 4WD SLT is
rated at 16 miles per gallon
city and 22 mpg highway.
Its fuel economy is at 4 on
a scale of 1 to 10 in its class
size.

Second-row seat backs fold forward at the push of a button beside them.
Separate buttons in cargo area of the Yukon flip each into a vertical position be-
hind the front buckets. Once the second-row captain-style seats are out of the
way, the backs of the third-row seats will fold flat when a button is pressed on
either side of the cargo area.
