Raúl the Third ’s

work is drawing much
acclaim and was featured
in four recent exhibits: The
Community Arts Initiative
at the Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston; Carroll and Sons
Art Gallery; the Fitchburg Art
Museum; and his first solo museum
exhibition at the Museum of Art, University of
New Hampshire. He teaches classes on drawing and comics for kids at the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston; the Maud Morgan Arts community
arts center in Cambridge; and Young Audiences
of Massachusetts.
Influenced by his youth in the border town
of El Paso-Juarez, Raúl’s artwork recalls the old
Mercado Cuauhtemoc and its many booths filled
with old curiosities, etchings by José Guadalupe
Posada, and the ballpoint pen–detailed fan art
found in issues of Lowrider magazine.

“Only from the inventive mind of writer Cathy Camper could come
such genius: a book for kids that has it all—kooky characters,
cool cars and outer space, no less! Not to mention a high-interest
graphic-novel form, full of hip and hop, sure to grab the wits of the
most reluctant of readers. What more could readers ask?”
—MEGAN McDONALD, bestselling author of
the Judy Moody and Stink series

The best car in
the universe
Lupe Impala, El Chavo Flapjack, and
Elirio Malaria LOVE working with cars.
You name it, they can figure out how to
fix it, from race cars to drifters to junkers. But the cars Lupe, Flapjack, and
Elirio love best are lowriders—cars
that hip and hop, dip and drop.

“Lowriders in Space is FAR OUT, and the illustrations are OUT OF
THIS WORLD. Love this graphic novel. ¡Muy buena!”
—AMY SEDARIS

“From the ’hood to the Hollywood Hills and the projects to the
Poconos, Cathy Camper and Raúl the Third’s thrilling interstellar
adventure is sure to put a smile on the face of any kid and any
parent. I love Lowriders in Space!”

FOUND magazine, and contributor to This American Life

So it feels like the stars have aligned
when a contest is announced for the
best car around. The prize? A carload
of cash—just what the team needs to
open their own shop! But how can they
turn what they have into a winner?

“Lowriders in Space is a beautifully imagined graphic novel that
will spark young readers’ imaginations while broadening their
understanding of language. The art is inspired, the story fantastic,
and together they make a truly magical tale.”

ELIRIO MALARIA, FLAPJACK
OCTOPUS, AND LUPE IMPALA
LIKED WORKING WITH CARS.
THAT WAS THEIR JOB.

LUPE IMPALA
WAS THE FINEST
MECHANIC SOUTH
OF VACAVILLE.

SHE COULD RESCUE A DROPPED
GASKET, NOTCH A BELT, OR
ELECTROCHARGE A SPARK
PLUG, SWISH A SWASHPLATE,
OR WRANGLE A MANIFOLD
WITH A TWIST OF HER WRENCH
AND A FLICK OF HER WRIST.

“WHEN I WAS LITTLE, I WAS GOOD
WITH A WRENCH. I TOOK APART THE
JUNGLE GYM.”

Aha!
Much more
interesante!*

“IN THE BARRIO,** I FIXED EVERYBODY’S
CARS. SOMETIMES IT WORKED.”

“SOMETIMES IT DIDN’T.”

“I LEARNED TO
USE WHAT I HAD,

FLAPJACK OCTOPUS

WHEN HE POLISHED

ALL THE CARS ON THE LOT GLEAMED FROM HIS EXPERTISE.

Camouflages,

BOO!

Eight arms

We have to
keep him
busy cleaning
cars.

ELIRIO WAS THE BEST
DETAIL ARTIST AROUND.
PEOPLE WERE A LITTLE
AFRAID OF ELIRIO
MALARIA.

Don’t be scared,
eses!* Only lady
mosquitos bite
vatos for food!

WITH A BEAK LIKE THAT, THEY
THOUGHT HE MIGHT BITE.
* BUDDIES, DUDES

13

“MY HANDS HELP
ME PAINT.”

“BUT MY BEAK
IS MY BRUSH.”

NO HAND WAS AS STEADY AS HIS
BILL WHEN IT CAME TO PINSTRIPING
A CAR OR AIRBRUSHING A SCENE.

“WE COULDN’T AFFORD BRUSHES AND
PAINT, SO I MADE MY OWN.”

“I STARTED ON PAPER . . .”

14

“. . . THEN
WALLS.”

“BUT CARS
MADE MY
ART MOVE.”

!

Y hay un
monto´n de
carros!*

* AND THERE’S A TON OF CARS!

FROM SUNRISE ’TIL SUNSET THEY
WORKED AT THE CAR DEALERSHIP,
SIX DAYS A WEEK.

Yes, El
Jefe.*

I want all these
cars washed, tuned
up, and pinstriped by
the end of today!

* BOSS

16

Sure thing,
El Jefe.

Is it the
weekend yet?

17

BUT THEY DREAMED OF HAVING
THEIR OWN GARAGE.

Someday.

One day.

No way.

18

THEY ALSO
DREAMED OF
HAVING THEIR
OWN CAR.

THEY’D SEEN SOME
CARS BLAST BY
FAST . . .

. . . AND OTHERS
THAT COULD SHIFT
AND DRIFT . . .

19

Miren,* boys,
that’s my type
of carro.

BUT THEY WANTED A
CAR THAT WOULD GO
LOW AND SLOW.

Cool!

WHOA!

BAJITO Y SUAVECITO.**

* LOOK ** LOW AND SLOW (THE MOTTO OF
LOWRIDERS EVERYWHERE)

I bet we could
make a car as
cool as that! We
just need that
garage . . .

Yeah, right.
But who’s
paying for
all that?

No bosses!
New tools!
Three bays!
A saltwater
swimming
pool!

Wait a sec!

21

* LOWRIDERS

I know we could win
this. We got the
skills!

And I think I
know of just
the car . . .

23

A little time, a
little energy, and
we’ll have the
cash to buy our
own space!
