ideas of setting the whole world on fire for Christ.. . But
after a few months of hard adjusting, I realize that sueh
goals as that will have to wait for a while, at least for
now. Beginning to function as an effective missionary
takes much time, patience, and determination. But, it
also takes Gpd using sa few matches of His will to begin
to light a'fire within the heart of the people arid the ^

Now, after a time of absorbing what we have learned and

to work with my language in preaching and teaching. It.

MIKE, PATSY, AND MICHAEL
A PIGTORAL REPORT
PAST
It all started with a letter from
Ed Holt, missionary in Chile, He
wrote and asked us to pray about
coming down to the work in Chile.
Pray we did, and after 36 preach
ing dates and uncountable miles,
we arrived at the airport in San
tiago. It was a great day for us,
the climax of months of work and
prayer. It was the greatest step
of faixh we have taken thus far,
and we praise God for allowing us
to come. The coming weeks were
exciting ones, filled with won
derment and strange new things,
but soon we were beginning to get
settled and needed to think of
the next most important thing on
our agenda... Ianguage study.Again
God had His hand in our 1 ives as
we were able to enroll on the
same day as we went to apply, and
WORKING UNDER THIS SHADOW
TEACHING AT CAMP
iW
were in classes within three
weeks of getting here. We were
in classes 2 hours a day, study
ing many hours daily also. That
took most of our time, but we also
had the task of registering our
selves with the government, get
ting our things out of customs,
and finding a place to live. We
had to learn how to spiritually
crawl, walk, and finally run ail
over again. But, it was a great
lesson in humbleness, and God in
deed made us realize that we
weren't the greatest things He
had to use. We were able to get
our things out of customs without
any trouble, an almost unheard of
thing here, and soon also found
us a home. We moved into our
home in November,and began think
ing of the future work.
PRESENT
PASSING OUT TRACTS
The opportunity arose for us to
begin ministering to the small
church at Curacav1,about 35 miles
from Santiago, The church had
never had any converts and had
really been there in building
only. We did have very good fa
cilities for the church,as it was
also the home of the central zone
camp. Soon,we were having a house
full every Sunday night, and had
our first Evangelistic service in
January of 1972. There were over
200 for this night, and we simply
explained who we were and what we
were doing there. That began some
of the adults coming on a regular
basis, and then we had our second
Evangelistic night one month la
ter. This time, Miguel Gonzalez,
evangelist from Santlago,preached
and we showed a film on the life
of Christ. There were not as many
there this time, but many more
adults attended. That night, five
came forward to begin studying in
a regular basis in their homes.
Now, we are preparing for our
first crusade there, which will
be in Apri I.
Most of our time, however, has
been spent with the correspondence
course which Ed Holt and I have
been working on. We finally got
it printed in February of '72,
and were able to pass out over
50,000 during a month. With the
course only I month old at this
writing, we already have over 100
students, with more coming In
dally. We used many young people
in the surrounding towns and
churches, which helped them learn
something of personal evangelism
and helped us reach more homes
more quickly. We look forward to
a year of work with this tool.
CHURCH AT CURACAVI
FUTURE
Michael is very happy. Know why?
He was celebrating his 2nd birth
day here, and it was a day to
celebrate. We parents, of course,
thought back to 2 short years ago
when he came, and wondered at how
short the time had been. It is
I ! ke that in all of our li fe.
Like the saying "Only one life
'Twill soon be past. Only what's
done for Christ will last", we
feel our time may be short here.
We would like to ask a special
favor of you, right now...help us
make these short years here as
productive as they can be for Him.
Give, not only of money, but of
time inprayer and help with teach
ing. Come down and see the work.
The future is bright for Michael,

GROWING INTEREST IN COURSE
Since the first lessons came off
the press only a few months ago,
many people have taken an amaz
ing interest. At the present
time, there are 2,000 students.
Many of them are from Santiago,
and a surprising number of these
are from upper class homes. Many
more are from the larger cities
of Chile and their suburbs. With
one ad in a national newspaper
we were able to get 400 students.
The follow-up is now going into
effect. This will take most of
my time as we I I as Ed's.We could
effectively employ 100 young men
or women forljear without stop,
when we finally reach our goal of
10,000 for the first year.
THE HOLY SPIRIT WITH THE MISSIONARIES
On June i3-i6 we were involved in one of the spiritual retreats of which
we have been a part since they began in December of last year. There
are five missionary families involved, & what a blessing these meetings
have been! Our discussions this month were directed at the Holy Spirit
and the spiritual gifts. I feel that we really have learned more about
the Holy Spirit and what He can and will do in our lives if we will just
let Him.
Each day, we had a three hour session in the morning and also a three
hour session in the afternoon. We discussed different problems we had
and questions on this subject that were bothering us. At night, after
... alI of the children had
been put to bed, we had a
prayer session that you
would have to have been a
part of to know just what
a blessing was received
from it. We praise the
Lord that we have been a
part of these & are eager
ly awaiting the next in
September. As you can see
from the~picture, this Is
a happy looking group. We
have the Lord to thank for
the abilitytodo His work.
NEW FORWARDING AGENT!
As you probably noticed from the address on the front of this paper, we
have a new forwarding agent. She is a member of Antioch Christian Church
and has been for many years. She is a pianist there, and a very fine,
dependable Christian woman. We pray that you will write to her and en
courage her by letting her know you are praying for her. It isn't an
easy job, and It requires quite a bit of time.
We hope that you will excuse any inconvlence that unanswered- letters or
cards may cause during this change. Please be praying for her, and feel
free to write any time.

5 0 S P E L ...CHARIOT!
It doesn't look like/much of a different car, but it is! A
small, red 1970 Datsun that is sitting out there right now
in the rain! It looks like m^y other cars that you see up
and down the streets of Santiago and the Country of Chile.
But it is different! It is a gift of God through His People
for the work here,in Chile. We are so grateful to Him and
to His church for their help, that we can't say how much. We
were able to get our ,c'ar With very little difficulty, and
it has helped the work.so greatly,
I got the "green light" from our forwarding agent on the mon
ey the last Mon-day of April. I looked some that day but did
not get in too big of a hurry as I felt time was not import
ant. The next day the price on new cars went up 30^ on the
offical market, and much more unoffically! That meant that
used cars would be going up also. Tuesday I looked at the
little Datsim, W'ednesday I tried it out, Thursday the money
came and Priday it was liscensed and in my name. It has
gone up 1/3 in value since the time I bought it! Quite an
investment in the Lord's work, and we pray it was the right
decision.
Since getting the car, the work has greatly improved. We
are going to Curacavi, now 2 times a week to teaching and for'
class sessions in homes^ ^There-h^ve also been possibilities
of starting new churches further out, but the greatest thing
is the the increase in t^ime I now have to further the Lord's'
work! It also helps in study time,;and extra time for my
family. It looks like any other car^. BUT IT IS TRULY GOD'S
GOSPEL CHARIOT HERE!
mm 1121 IM IlilS -
CURACAVI Tliere were two new Christians born on the Sun
day of May 21st, Bro. Luiz and Sister Snieda are now new
babes in Christ, but already they are beginning to show a
real love in Christ to others. There are now 6 baptized
Christians in the church at Curacavi, aiid many more are
thinking and studying the possibilities of giving their
lives to Christ. The attendance is runing aroimd 100 for
the young people's service and about 40 for the adult preav
ching. A special service was held in the home of a new
Christian family on Tues. night and there were 20 adults
with numerous children crowded into the small 2 room house.
Sister Lydia, wife of Bro. Luiz, had dedicated herself to
winning her 11 children and their families to the Lord!
Already, she has personally led her husband, 2 neighbors,
and is working on her 2 oldest sons and their families.
SANTIAGO I had the priviledge of speaking at the Santa -
Rosa Church last Sunday night as their preacher was out of
town. That church is buying new property to increase their
meeting place to hold the ever-growing numbers. I am work
ing to start, a new church in my home on Friday night using
filmstrips. This is the middle to upper class of people,
and the results may be a little slow. Pray for this work!
CASABLANCA Plans are being laid for a gospel team to be
formed to start a new church in this town, which is about
45 miles from Santiago. It is on the other side of Cura
cavi and has a population of 15-000. Gospel literature is
being used now and a crusade will be held in October, then,
the church will begin to function soon after that. The
team is comprised of Julio Carreno of Valparaiso, Alberto
Gonzalez of Osofno and myself,
CORRESPONDENCE COURSE VJe now have 1,500 students plus, '
as the course grows daily! Several national adds have help
ed in the attendance. Soon, the follow-up will begin, and
trained workers will be needed. There are 400 students
alone in Santiago, 300 in the 3rd largest city of Concep-
cion, and many others.

"OUT GRINGO!!!'" .,
What was that I hear? A riot against foreigners? A dis

NO! it is just Michael and his flop-eared dog, Gringo! But
I'll let Michael tell it..,,"We got Gringo from Curacavi,

to me. They called him "Ringo" and we just couldn't resist
the temptation to call him Gringo. He is still just a pup,
but already has made himself known. He loves to read my
Daddy's paper for him, but unfortunately Gringo reads a
lot with his paws and teeth! Daddy dosen^t imderstand
Gringos troubles at wanting to know the news and sure does
get excited.. Mother h\mg out some clothes and Gringo
thought they were dry and tried to help her bring them in!
You'd have thought he'd committed a major crime! But,
Gringo is really a good dog. He can speak 2 languages.
Growl and Spanish. When Daddy hollers at him to Get out

But you don't have a dog that smart, do you?"

"WHAT'CHA BEEN DOIH'?"
Many people have written and some have been asking, "What
have you been doing since you came to Chile?" The answer is
pretty simple and may shock you, "Nothing!!!" We have not
done anything, but Christ through us has been doing miracles
in all areas, Since being in Chile, Christ has:
Taught us to communicate in the Spanish language; given us a
home with adequate space for office and to grow in; given us
a fruitful ministry of serving and preaching in Curacavi,
where He has added 10 children to His church; enrolled almost
3000 students in the correspondence course, and caused an
unheard of response to His course, through brother Ed Holt.
He has given us such a burden for souls that He has planted
an idea for church evangelism in a new and marvelous way. He.
is opening the door for a tent to be made in Chile, a full-
time evangelistic team to preach and travel the country,
following up on the course. He continues to open doors and
place burdens for us to do here. This plan will mean His
Name will be preached and His church started in 6 areas each
year.
He has blessed us with health, security in His arms, a new
ness of the Holy Spirit in our lives and His (the Holy Spi
rit's) comforting ministry has.led us on to greater things
for Him, He has given us a car;>to travel and do the work
with, and has also taught us how to be patient with all the
times it has had to be fixed. H_e has given.us money^to buy
Bibles, Sunday School literature to be used, a comp'lete
English library, and. other additional literature . He is-
wonderful;^ marvelous, and all.-powerful. "V/hat'cha been
dpin* in Chile?": - "Nothin'" But Christ has done it all th
rough us and anyone else who lets Him work. "V/hat'cha been
doing for Christ where you live?"

BOLD NEW PLAN FOR EVANGELISM!!!
The course is not growing, it is multiplying. The problem is
simple but wonderful; how to follow-up all the students and
win them to the Lord Jesus Christ. After much prayer and
talking with other missionaries, it was agreed upon that the
best method will be the formation of ah__ev^gelistic team ^
which would work with a large tent holding^crusades through
out the country, beginning with those areas which have the
most students and working from there. For example in Con-
cepcion, 3rd largest city in Chile, we have no churches.but .
almost 1000 students. No trained workers from Santiago to
about 300 miles south, and then from there to another 300
miles we have no churches. Basically, and briefly, this is
the plani
I. Preparatory team2 members2 months., prepare for the
Crusade, secure site for tent, etc.
II. Reviv-al team6 members-2 months. 2 & 3 week crusades in
one area, with street preaching and nightly services.
Securing of building., for converts and intensive evan
gelistic service's daily. . ,
III. Follow-up team. 2 members2 months. Follow-up revival
and train church, set up S.S.' classes, teacher training.
This is the basic plan. More details soon!' Give, and Pray!!!
PATSY'S PONDERINGS
We just had a suggestion recently that we have an article .
from a woman's view, and we thought it was a good idea. Hope
you enjoy it, and if you have any questions about anything-I
write, please write and ask me.
I had my first experience with making peanut butter last
week. That was quite an experience., You all probably know
by now that there are many things we have in- the states that
are not available to us hereit just so happens that peanut
butter is among this group. It was quite a job having to
take the skins off the 21bSo of peanuts, running them throu
gh a meat grinder, and then through the blender. We added 2
pounds of butter and about ^ a cup of honey. It turned out
tasting like peanut butter, but it definitely didn't have
the texture of Jiffy Peanut butter. Try it sometime when
you feel like an adventure.
...
As you all probably know by now, we are expecting another ^
baby in December. Many of you have asked about the Doctors,
hospitals, medicine, etc. So I would like to tell a little
about this. The hospitals here are very modern. While a new
mother is in the hospital, the baby is put in the room with
her. The mother can take care of the baby as she likes but
with one exception. They don't allow you to use diaper pins.
They tie the baby up in the diaper. It sounds crazy, but it
is their custom. They say that pins are just too dangerous.
I can tell you more about this after I've had the baby. I
have a very good doctor. He studied in the USA for two or
three years, and is one of the best in Chile, The medicine
situation here,is still really good, but who can tell about
these things. Some medicines aren't available now, but usu- '
ally there is a substitute. If not, and it is an emergency,
you. can call the radip station here, and they will ask for
someone to- take it to where ever it is needed. They don't
have to worry, about this too much now. We are in the Lord's
hands and He has taken care of us so very well since v/e have
been here. How could we say that He isn't a wonderful God?
I would like very much to have any criticism or suggestions
as to this article. Please write also and give me some ideas
as to what you would like to know about here in Chile. May
the Lord bless you all. Please pray for us. Love Patsy

A YEAR OF PREPARATION
Mike,Patsy, and Michael stepped
off the plane in Santiago on Sep
tember 14th to begin their work
here with other Christians. It
has been a year of work and pro
gress. The first few months were
spent in moving Into a home, in
tensive language study, and gen
erally getting settled. They were
working with othermlssionary fam
ilies In the works here.
They were called to Chile to
help with the follow-up on a cor
respondence course started by a
fellow missionary, Ed Holt. Dur
ing much of the time Mike was tra
veling with Ed distributing lit
erature for the course and visit
ing churches tel 11 ng of the course.
After about 6 months on the field
they took over the work at Cura-
cavi with the help of Bro. Ed.
Curacavi is a small town of about
10,000 about 30 miles from Santi
ago. There had been a church
building forani/nber of years, but
very little had been done in the

way of evangelism. As they work
ed together in the community, the
church began to grow.As Ed^s work
with the course increased, he be
gan phasing out of the work at
Curacavi and more and more was
being done by the brethren of the
Church. At this writing there are
10 members of the church. They are
planning for their own crusade
September 20-30 in which they wl I I
try to win their own people. Ed
Holt plans to leave the work in
September and the Sheffield's a

helped to showthe need for a lar

EVANGEL I STiC PLANS FOR CHILE
It is my prayer for Chile to be
won for Chirst,as It is for every
Christian brother here. But, to
do this we must think big, per
sonally, and be led by the Holy
Spirit in all that we do. There
fore, It is with much prayer that
I present this planfor evangeliz
ing the country of Chile.
lBMt Hull
We are faced with a problem, but it is one of those problems that I
like. At the present time, (September, 1972) we have well over 3,000
students in the correspondence course. The number grows daily and the op
portunity for evangelism grows with it. There is another problem; this
one not so likeable. We are sorely lacking personneI...in churches, in
members. In leaders in Chile. We have the opportunity of starting a real
movement in Chile but this will take time, work, and sacrifices on all
concerned. The grand total of churches of the Church of Christ Christian
Churches in Chile is 23. Of this number, the largest is probably no more
than 100 members, and many are less than 25 in adult attendance. Out of
almost 10 million people, this is a very poor percentage. From Santiago
south, we have only I church for almost 450 miles, with towns of over
100,000 almost every 60 miles. Our works are small for the most part, but
those we have are growing. We are few in number, few in strength, few in
churches, but with Jesus Christ, we are a majority!
Faced with these "problems",both good and bad, I present this plan for
the evangelism of the country of Chile & for the growthof the work here.
The evangelistic "team" wi I I be made up of more or less 10 members, and
will be divided up into these parts:

^ There is an old story that is told about prayer and asking God for
things. A church out in the dry southwest{where it is really dry!) went
without rain for many months. The people knew the need for rain was pres
sing, and decided to go up on a nearby hillside to pray for rain until it
came. Some 100 people gathered on the hill to ask God to send the rain,
believing with all their hearts that He would. There, standing in the
midst, was one sweet old lady, who happened to be the only one in ICQ
who had believed enough to carry an umbrella!! I stand with my umbrella
in hand, and am looking like Elijah from Mount Carmel. The tent will 'be
paid for by the time you read this, reducing that need to $500.00. There
is a small cloud on the horizon,it^s God sending the rain! I've prayed,
God is going to do it, and my umbrella is open.

Greetings to you from summer-time Chile! We want to take this opportunity to wish you a very
Christ-Filled Christmas and New Year dedicated to Him. As we ore separated by many miles, but
our hearts are with you there in your homes and churches as you work for the kingdom there.
We are patienly awaiting the coming of our next little one. He or she is due to be born between
the 15 th and X th of December, which mokes the date just about Christmas time. We are looking
forward to this new one with much excitement and joy as God has blessed us with another life to
raise for Him. Potsy is feeling fine these days, just a little uncomfortable as is to be expected.
Little Michael helps her considerably around the house and is continually talking of his little brother.
There has never been a doubt in his mind that it would be a little boy. Hope the little girl con
learn to play football quickly, so that be won't be too disapointed. 1have been feeling great,
only occasionally bogged-down by the traditional sicknesses. The work is challenging and keeps
me busy a lot of the time, but I wouldn't have it any otner way.
The blessings of the Lord have been so great this last year that I don't know where to begin counting
them. We began the year knowing so very little Spanish and not sure exactly where the Lord wanted
us to work the hardest. We started on a full-time basis with the small church in Curacavf with classes
of young people only. During April of that year we held the first campaingn for the church there in
which the first Christians were converted to Christ. From the 4 that were baptized, we worked toward
building up the church more and more. Sunday School attendance averaged well over 100 weekly with
several more adults accepting Christ and working with His church. Plans were made for a large tent
campaign to be held, the first with the new tent, and attendances ran about 400 to 500 nightly for 10
days. From this campaign, 64 were added to the church, of which about 50 adults proved faithful.
The church now has it's own preacher, is attempting to win the community without "gringo" help, and
is laying plans for on outreach program to win another city to Christ. God has really worked a miracle
with the church in Curacavf, and we pray that from it we have learned enough to be able to do with
His help the some throughout various parts of Chile.
Also during this year our definite plans were laid for the starting and building of a Christian movement
in Chile. Ed Holt, Jeff.Myers):' dhd m^elf banded together to form an evangelistic organization in
which we would ottefhpt a three-prong attack against Satan and his forces. Ed Holt is using an extensive
correspondence cours^-which now has over 5,000 students. By this means we have been able to make
contacts in many homes throughout Chile* When there Is on established groups meeting In anareo/
a campaign for 4 months is held to preach the gospel nightly and to train the new members In their
own personal iDvongellsm. The final phase of the plan Is thetraining of notional leaders;whlch will
be done by training seminary we will be starting In March of this yMr. Jeff Myere will hove the
cargo of this mammoth |ob^ as we will all be helping him In his work here* So far# we have about
20 men Interested In starting the course which will one year* It will be basic. Intensive, and
followed by other Intensive courses by correspondence* In this way we hope to have a movement
of Independent churches seeking only to be Christian here In Chile* .
\We hove also seen the political situation worsen here In Chile with continual strife and hatred*
How much flme we hove left only God knows, but we ore determined tocontinue working until
- thnt time wp hnve to lenve-the-work-here. Wo-of^troining^-thcKchurches to be independeni omHo
take the Initiative to win others to Christ* Acost of living rise of over '150 plus Increasingly
higher prices have caused things to be a little difficult to find and buy* We ask you to be praying
for the country oftd especially for the Christians who ore without many of the things that you In the
U*S* take for granted*
Our Immediate needs for the work here are many* For the work-to progress on a scale that we feel
Is necessary considering the time we hove In Chile and condition of the country, we ask that you
would honestly consider these needs and pray for them Individually*
Our greatest need at the present is a large 21/2 ton truck to be used as a portable chapel and
trasportatlon for the tent* During the campaigns this truck will be used as a portable chapel to
preach In the streets and transport the ^ent^anjUgulpm^t., Total cost will be approximately $2*500*00*
The flani payment on the large properfy^y^f^ will serve as seminary and offices must be
made before the end of the yed^ Hj^s propejiyii^tTrbe used as offices for the "El Encuentro"
correspondence course, for the evonglFisFt^flces end also for the offices of the seminary*- As well
ps classrooms, some students will be living on the property for the one year school term* As there
IS no credit and properties go up on equivolent of $500*00 weekly, we were forced to buy{immediately
and pay 80% down* The final 20% will be paid the end of the year and this part of the payment Is
mine topay*It will be only $1, 500,00 opproximotoly, but rnuot bo iwadc In one lump suiii*
Included In the plans for the next year ara^upurdigsmg^ pr^^^which will be used as meeting
placps for the graduates of the course onC^w^ChEisJjgQSs^^ will be bought, the campal^s
held on the properties, and It will be the responsibility of the new Christians to build their own meeting
houses and worship chapels. But, as Ihave explained, everything must be bought Inmedlotely and
F^d for In cosh, which necesitotes the money on hand for such ventures* They ore estimating onother
100% cost of living rise after the last of the year, which will put the'properties completely out of
range for us* ,
God has been so good to us all these last days, that we know He Is getting ready for greater harvest of
souls before He comes. We look forward to His coming or to the exciting prospect of working for Him
until He comes* We ask you continued! prayers for us, for an occasional letter keeping us Informed of
the church growth where you are working In thekingdom*
Go bless each and every one of you during this time* Prdlse God that He came to be with us, to die
