"#$%"&'( 2013 Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory, University of Oregon * 1.0 Summary
This report studies daylighting under overcast sky conditions in the proposed Straub Hall Addition project as described in the 100 SD Drawings. This report includes analysis on all new construction spaces with the exception oI the Earl Hall classrooms. The Large Lecture Hall and Atrium were tested using a physical model in a Mirror Box ArtiIicial Sky. The Small Lecture Hall, 2 nd Floor Classroom, and Atrium Corridor Ends were tested using Millet Graphic Daylight Design Method.
The Large Lecture Hall was tested with several diIIerent skylight and acoustic cloud conIigurationsvertical glazing was kept constant throughout testing. Findings Ior the Large Lecture Hall include:
Punched Openings` tend to have better daylight distribution than continuous openings Skylight layout patterns Iollowing the seating pattern tend to have better daylight distribution The optimal amount oI skylight to daylight to 20-30Ic is approximately 400-500 SF Shallower acoustic clouds tend to increase daylight, potentially reducing the need Ior more skylight area Deeper skylight wells near teaching wall tend to deIlect daylight away Irom projection wall (projection should have 0.5 DF on vertical surIace) A perIorated reIlector under mezzanine skylights tends to reduce hot spots and increase distribution oI daylight Seating under mezzanine has inadequate daylighting and will likely need to use electric lighting with dimmable controls to match light levels in the rest oI the seating
This report does not include conIigurations tested aIter April 4 th , 2013. All conIigurations tested aIter April 4 th , 2013 will be included in a Iuture addendum report titled 'Large Lecture Hall Daylight: Phase 2 Iterations.
The Atrium was tested with Iour diIIerent skylight conIigurations. Findings Ior the Atrium include:
Punched Openings tend to produce Iewer hot spots` than larger continuous openings 2 Linear Punched Skylights (6 punched skylights) perIormed best Ior pleasure reading` (20 Ic) on the 2 nd Floor lounge areas and social` lounging (10 Ic) on 1 st
Floor Continuous skylights around Gable Common will likely provide adequate daylight (20-30 Ic) Ior lounge spaces at the ends oI the Gable Common
"#$%"&'( 2013 Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory, University of Oregon + The Small Lecture Hall and 2 nd Floor Classroom were calculated Irom plans dated 12/28/2012, but it is suspected that the design calculated is more recent than this. Findings Ior the Small Lecture Hall include:
Daylight only useIul Ior back Iew rows oI seatingwindow height is too low Ior depth oI room Potential glare Ior back row seats The alternating rhythm oI glazing openings creates uneven distribution oI daylight
The Atrium Corridor Ends were calculated Irom plans dated 12/28/2012, but again it is suspected that the design calculated is more recent than this. Findings Ior the Atrium Corridor Ends include:
Potential glare Ior tasks near glazing Daylight Irom Atrium Corridor Ends does not contribute to main Atrium areas The inclusion oI light shelves may improve daylight distribution
"#$%"&'( 2013 Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory, University of Oregon # 2.0 Methods Overcast sky studies were done to analyze the daylighting in the proposed Straub Hall Addition project. Daylight simulation was conducted using two diIIerent methods. The Atrium and the Large Lecture Hall were tested using daylighting models in the ArtiIicial Sky overcast sky simulator at the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory, Eugene OR. The Small Lecture Hall, Second Floor North Classroom, and Atrium Corridor ends were tested using Millet Graphic Daylighting Design Method. The ArtiIicial Sky is a mirror box that simulates overcast sky distribution as deIined by CIE Standards. LI-COR LI-210SZ photometric sensors were used to measure illuminance at a speciIic point in the building, and at an unobstructed exterior point on top oI the model. The daylight Iactor at these speciIic points was calculated using a 3/81`0 scale daylighting model provided by Rowell Brokaw Architects. The sensors were placed on a 10`x10` grid at task height in both models. The Millet Graphic Daylighting Design Method (Millet Method`) is a graphic calculation oI daylighting based on room geometry, surIace reIlectance, external reIlectance, glazing area, visible transmission, maintenance, and glazing bar. All daylight Iactors (DF) in this report have been calculated with the Iollowing assumptions: 61 Visible transmission Ior all skylights 75 Visible transmission Ior all vertical glazing 70 Maintenance Iactor Ior all skylights 80 Maintenance Iactor Ior all vertical glazing 90 Mullion (Glazing bar) Iactor Ior all glazing Spaces analyzed with Millet Method also included surIace reIlectance assumptions oI 30 Iloor, 70 walls, 90 ceiling.

"#$%"&'( 2013 Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory, University of Oregon , 3.0 Results The results section oI this report is based on tests run in the ArtiIicial Sky on a daylighting model provided by Rowell Brokaw Architects, as well as tests calculated by Millet Graphic Daylighting Design Method. The Large Lecture Hall results include only Phase 1 Iterations (iterations created prior to April 4 th , 2013). All Phase 2 iterations oI skylight and ceiling cloud designs will be included in a Iuture addendum report titled Large Lecture Hall Daylight: Phase 2 Iterations`.
