NeoCryl A-601

NeoCryl A-601 is a water borne, all acrylic resin
designed to formulate abrasion resistant and UV
resistant coatings. NeoCryl A-601 offers
excellent compatibility with water borne
polyurethane dispersions, and many water
reducible alkyds. Films dry clear and resist
yellowing from UV exposure. NeoCryl A-601 is
supplied as a pre-coalesced product.

MODIFYING PIGMENTED FORMULATIONS WITH ALKYDS

NeoCryl A-601, our low energy, low polluting acrylic emulsion, may be pigmented to give semi-
gloss formulations 55-65 (60
o
geometry). Our recent work shows higher gloss can be obtained by
dispersing pigments in a water reducible alkyd and then letting down with the NeoCryl A-601. To
obtain optimum results, the alkyd must be compatible with the NeoCryl A-601. (Alkyds are listed
below.) The optimum level of alkyd should be about 25% of the total resin used in the formulation
to maintain the acrylic-like properties. Higher amounts of alkyd lead to properties more closely
related to the alkyds being used, and the values associated with the acrylic of light color and quick
dry may be lost. Another advantage that may be gained with the alkyd is that pigment can be
dispersed by a high speed blade. The general recommendation of the alkyd supplier should be
followed for neutralizing the alkyd and dispersing the pigment. At this time this technique looks
most promising in producing high-gloss, high performance coatings with low pollution
characteristics and low energy requirements.

Level

The suggested level of alkyd should be 1 part to 3 parts NeoCryl A-601 based on non-volatile of
both materials. Laboratory data shows higher levels of alkyd, such as 1/1, can lead to poorer film
properties (more yellowing, slower dry time, exterior mildew, etc.).

*Because of the darker color, only recommended for dark color formulas or primers.

Pigment Dispersion

Pigment may be dispersed by a high speed blade. General recommendations of the alkyd
manufacturer should be followed for neutralizing and dispersing. Care should be taken that the
grind paste is at pH 7.5 to 8.5 prior to addition of NeoCryl A-601 to prevent kick out. Neutralization
may be by ammonium hydroxide or organic amine, which ever is recommended by the alkyd
supplier, since the NeoCryl A-601 is not affected by changes in amine.

A high gloss grade of Titanium Dioxide such as R900 (DuPont), OR580 (American Cyanamid), or
RCL-9 (SCM Pigments) is preferred because they do give higher gloss. The optimum level of
pigment should be between 15% and 20% PVC to give the best compromise in hiding power and
gloss. Small amounts of aqueous grade tints can be added without lowering the gloss. Gloss
enhancing additives have been evaluated and have resulted in limited success. Materials tried
were Bykumen, DisperBYK and Tegopren.

Formulations

Formulation suggestions and examples of A-601 blended with alkyds can be found in Table II. Film
properties are found in Table III. Formulations, suggestions, and test results for corrosion inhibiting
primers can be found in Table IV. Industrial air dry enamel suggestions are outlined in Table V.

Predispersed pigments may be added to NeoCryl A-601 using simple mechanical agitation. These
industrial type finishes should be slightly reduced in viscosity with propylene glycol/water = 1/1 (vol.)
and 1/2 - 1% Balab 3056A (Witco Chem.). It is suggested that all systems be filtered just prior to
spraying.

When choosing a predispersed pigment, care must be exercised due to each manufacturer's
difference in technique and composition.
