SCHIP, House Votes Whether to Override Presidential Veto: You Can’t Triple-Stamp a Double Stamp

Today the House will vote whether to overturn the presidential veto to changes to State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The SCHIP program expired September 30th but will continue on extension by congress until November 15th. So why would the president veto poor children’s health insurance? Because economically, the new plan just doesn’t make sense. SCHIP The goal of SCHIP is to insure children whose parent’s can’t afford health insurance can still receive the care they need. Key factors in the legislation describe qualification for the program: · Income Level ·Age limitation Currently the program is for people making less than twice poverty level (determined by locality) and only children 18 and under. Most republicans are for keeping the program with these qualifications while increasing funding by $5 billion.

Simple Economics The legislation that the president vetoed does not have to do with saving children, but with sound economics. The legislation that came across the president’s desk provided for the income level requirement to be increased to four-times poverty level and for the term children to possibly include “kids” up to age 25. It also includes the provision to fund the program by increasing funding by $35 billion. The legislation is an attempt to recapture that population of uninsured individuals between the current threshold and middle-class families. The problem is that when you double the threshold you’re not only going to get those without health insurance, but you’ll also find people opting out of their healthcare plans in favor of the government handout, and that $35 billion estimate is not even close to estimating the coverage cost. The debate over SCHIP can be equated to something like Alan Greenspan being ridiculed on The View by Rosie O’Donnell to the applause of morons.
