population. This city is the capital of the state of So Paulo, located in the Brazils southeast.
So Paulo maintains strong international influence, considered an Alpha - World City.
The influence that So Paulo has in Brazil and in the world is cultural, economic and
political. The city holds many events, like the So Paulo Art Biennial, Brazil Grand Prix Formula

weather, the size of its helicopter fleet, its cultural life, its architecture, gastronomy, several

6

OUR WEATHER

The weather in So Paulo is very unstable. Dubbed as Cidade da Garoa, (rainy city in
Portuguese) you can have all the four seasons in only one day. In July and August well be in
the winter, but dont worry, you wont get very cold. The average temperature in July is
around 16C (60.8F) and is the coldest month. Usually, the day starts cold, and before 10
p.m., the sun gets hotter, and the weather is warm. When the sun sets, the nights get very
cold. Although the winter is not known as a very rainy month, So Paulo can get you by
surprise. Its important to always bring an umbrella with you. (You can look at the forecast at
http://www.accuweather.com/en/br/sao-paulo/45881/weather-forecast/45881)

OUR RELIGIONS

Brazil has a rich religious diversity due to the various immigration processes. We can
find many different religions around the streets, as like, Christian, Islamic, African-Brazilian,
Jewish, etc. We have a Secular State, which means you can worship any religion. The majority
of the population is Catholic.

OUR CULTURE

Like the religion, So Paulos culture is very rich and mixed. At the same day you can
eat Japanese food in Liberdade for lunch (Liberdade is a Japanese neighborhood), watch an
Australian concert by the afternoon, and have some spaghetti in Bixiga (Italian neighborhood)
for dinner. Its a city which has a little piece of the whole world. When it comes to music, we
have Bossa Nova and Samba as typical kinds of Brazilian music, but there are other variants
and many places to listen to good music in So Paulo. Explore our culture and you will find
diversity and a huge number of different things to do.

If you want to learn how to dance samba, here is a tutorial video! The first step is: Dont be
shy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioEjVHfg-NA

And here is a little bit of our samba in the 2012 Carnaval!

OUR CUISINE

So Paulo is a very multi-cultural place, so you can find restaurants that serve typical
Brazilian food from many different places, from north to south. You can try typical dishes such
as Feijoada or Moqueca. However, So Paulo also offers a large amount of restaurants where
you can try International Cuisine. Japanese and Mexican are very popular, but you can also
find French, Chinese, Thai, Indian, etc. The variety of appetizers and snacks is also huge and
you can find them anywhere. Even cheap bars offer a menu with pastis, coxinha, cheese, etc.
A large order of fries, for instance, costs from 12,00 to 22,00.
When we talk about cuisine theres one thing you should know about paulistanos: we
are addicted to Pizza. Even though it was not created here in Brazil, we are very proud of our
Pizza and we guarantee that is not only the best Pizza youll find in Brazil but also in the
world. There are hundreds of places that deliver pizzas all over the city, and its really common
to order pizzas at night. The variety of flavors goes way beyond pepperoni and cheese pizzas.
You can order a zucchini pizza, and also chocolate and banana pizzas. If you are an indecisive
person you order 2 flavors in the same pizza. Awesome! A large pizza cost around R$15,00
and R$50,00. Forget about your diet, you must try it! :D
Also, pay per kilo restaurants is very popular! Its easy to find them, theyre
everywhere especially in neighborhoods filled with commercial buildings. The kilo en So
Paulo goes from R$25,00 to R$55,00.

SAFETY
While So Paulo may not be as safe as Copenhagen or post-Giuliani Manhattan, you will
feel safe at most of touristic areas if you follow a few common sense rules. One thing to keep
in mind is that So Paulo is a city of social contrasts, but this definitely does not mean that
you have to be paranoid all the time. Relax, and learn how locals deal with their personal
safety. Here are some basic guidelines we try to follow ourselves.

Avoiding the pitfalls
Do not bother bringing flashy jewelry, gold, or platinum watches. If you've got it, this is
not the place to flaunt it...

Carry along a photocopy of your passport, in case you are asked to show some ID.

Do not take along more cash than you need. Most restaurants and stores take credit
card, anyway.

Stay at specifically recommended areas.

Avoid dark or isolated areas where you do not see a single soul at night. Walk with a
sense of purpose, as if you knew where you are going to.

Don't walk around with your camcorder or your state-of-the-art camera swinging from
your limp hand, like a shopping bag. Wear shoulder straps.

If you bring along expensive cameras or camcorders, consider insurance.

If you take a bus, keep the exact change in hand, so you don't have to pick up your
wallet (which obviously is in your front pocket).

Do not leave your drink unattended at bars or discos, and dont accept any drinks from
someone you dont know.
26

Don't take strangers you've just met back to your room - even if you think you are in
love! This is the easiest way to become a victim of violence, or theft. Take them to a
motel, instead.

Don't get involved with the drug scene, even if you think you know what you're doing.

If the worse happens, and you are approached by a criminal element, try to keep calm.
Do not fight. They may be on drugs, could react violently, and you certainly have more
to lose than they do.

Though police officers in the street try to be helpful, most do not speak other
languages. If you need to report something was stolen for insurance purposes, go to
the tourist police (DEATUR). Their offices are located in:

Rua Consolao, 247 - loja 08 - Centro (11) 3257-4475

TRANSPORTATION
Asking friends is the best way to know how to go to places, always try to go with
someone else to ensure greater security. Searching in sites is also a good idea when you want
to know more about So Paulo. So Paulo is a city that never stops, there's always something
new happening, keep yourself always informed about new things to do. Another important
point is that So Paulo is one of the largest cities in the world, it is important to always plan
the best route to get to places, always use Google Maps which provides the best routes
for buses, subways and trains. Youll always have to walk a bit to get to places if you dont
feel comfortable walking you can take a taxi at any time of the day.
To avoid carrying cash, So Paulo has a kind of magnetic card called "Bilhete nico",
valid for bus and subway and train. You can recharge it on any terminal (bus, train or subway).
The Bilhete nico ticket gives you the right to get in as many buses as you want within 2
hours after the first just paying one passage, without paying anything extra for the other, the
Bilhete nico has the same benefits to all types of public transportation. Each passage for any
type of public transportation costs R$ 3,20 and the minimum charge for single ticket is R$
16,00. To use it just touch it on any magnetic machine on terminals or inside the bus, pass it
every time you change the bus, train or subway. Remember that there are some train and
subway terminals that have the free exchange. You can buy the Bilhete nico in any terminal.
On weekdays the public transportation opens at 4:00am and closes at 00:00, on weekends
and holidays the schedule is different. To use Bus + Subway or Train with Bilhete nico costs
R$ 3,20 + R$ 1,80 = R$ 5,00. You can charge your Bilhete on Subway stations.

Bus
There are several types of buses in Sao Paulo, the colors identify the region where its
from and where it goes, for example:
Come or goes to the Central region.
North West.
North or Northeast.
East.
East.
South.
Mid-South.
Southeast.
Intermunicipal or subway price is different.

Always try to get information about bus. To make it easier, there is an information board
informing the main avenues where that bus will pass, located at the side and front of the bus.
There is a professional known as cobrador sitting behind a turnstile to collect your money
and give you change.

Subway and Train
All subway lines and trains have some kind of connection or are connected to bus
terminals. The subways are usually faster and safer than trains; always prefer to take the
subway. Train is called by CPTM and subway by Metr.

Taxi
You don't have to go far to find a taxi in So Paulo - they are everywhere. And they are
hard to miss too. Beware of the different types of taxi in So Paulo, there are normal (white
with yellow and black stripes), special (white and red, more expensive than the normal), luxury
(all black, the most expensive) each one has a different price. All taxis are white but prefer the
taxis with yellow and black stripes on the side, these are the normal taxis. The taxis run by the
kilometer. The initial fare in a normal taxi is R$4,10 and the kilometer starts counting as soon
as you get in. It costs R$ 2,50 per kilometer. After 8 p.m. and on Sundays, fares are a little
higher (the kilometer is set to bandeira 2, and costs R$ 3,25). You do not need to give tips.
Some taxis are air-conditioned at no extra charge. A word to the wise: do not make pre-paid
deals with taxis. They are illegal, and probably mean the driver is trying to take advantage of
you. Hail the next cab. We've heard of taxis trying to pull this dirty trick. For your safety, call
some taxi company that you can find in internet. Some of them accept cards, but the most
part of the taxis in So Paulo only accept money. Dont forget to check this information!
