II CHRONICLES 20: 1-4 (NRSV)
1 After this the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them some of the Meunites, came against Jehoshaphat for battle. 2 Messengers came and told Jehoshaphat, "A great multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea; already they are at Hazazon-tamar" (that is, Engedi). 3 Jehoshaphat was afraid; he set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the towns of Judah they came to seek the LORD.

Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, and whom they avoided and did not destroy-11 they reward us by coming to drive us out of your possession that you have given us to inherit. 12 O our God, will you not execute judgment upon them? For we are powerless against this great multitude that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you."

II CHRONICLES 20:13-17 (NRSV)
13 Meanwhile all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14 Then the spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the middle of the assembly. 15 He said, "Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the LORD to you: 'Do not fear or be dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but God's. 16 Tomorrow go down against them; they will come up by the ascent of Ziz; you will find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 This battle is not for you to fight; take your position, stand still, and see the victory of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.' Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, and the LORD will be with you."

II CHRONICLES 20: 5-12 (NRSV)
5 Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6 and said, "O LORD, God of our ancestors, are you not God in heaven? Do you not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? In your hand are power and might, so that no one is able to withstand you. 7 Did you not, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the descendants of your friend Abraham? 8 They have lived in it, and in it have built you a sanctuary for your name, saying, 9 'If disaster comes upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house, and before you, for your name is in this house, and cry to you in our distress, and you will hear and save.' 10 See now, the people of Ammon, Moab, and

VICTORY SUNDAY IS COMING!
On the first Sunday in December, we are making history once again! On the first Sunday in December for the first time in 41 years, we will be able to pay off the mortgage on our church property. As I indicated to the congregation on last Sunday, the initial property purchased by the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ back in 1965-1966 had a $90,000 mortgage on it when I came to serve Trinity United Church of Christ in March of 1972. While we were paying faithfully on that mortgage, however, we outgrew that facility. When we built the “new” worship center at 532 W. 95th Street, the $90,000 mortgage was subsumed under the $1.5 million dollar mortgage that we had to take out for constructing the new facility. Before we could burn that second mortgage, however, we had once again outgrown that facility! As we broke ground for the third worship center (the 400 W. 95th Street facility where we now sit), the remaining portion of the $1.5 million dollar mortgage was subsumed into the new note that we acquired as we had to borrow in excess of $17,000,000 to construct the worship center where we presently sit. Across the past 33 years we have purchased additional pieces of property and all of those properties have been used as colSunday, November 27, 2005

lateral to secure the mortgages. All of that is now “history,” however! We are now debt free. We now owe no one anything, and we will burn the mortgage for the present worship center this coming Sunday, December 4, 2005! We have in excess of $22,000,000 worth of property that you, the faithful members of our congregation, have enabled us to acquire. You have done the “impossible” through your faithful tithes and offerings. We have had no “fundraisers.” We have not written out to other companies, other people and/or other churches begging them to “plant a seed” financially in our ministry. Just your giving has enabled us to burn the mortgage. Just your faithfulness through giving your tithes and offerings has enabled us to be the only African American church in the city of Chicago to have paid for its facilities through tithes and offerings and faithful stewardship. We are not recipients of free property or “a dollar an acre” kind of property from the Mayor’s office. In fact, many in the city keep telling me that we are on the Mayor’s “hit list.” With no political help. With no millionaires giving to us. With no money from Oprah Winfrey as was once rumored in one of the rag sheets here in the city and with no outside help, whatsoever, we have accumulated $22,000,000 worth of real estate in the city of Chicago!

PASTOR’S PAGE
Contrary to the “illusion” of this being the bourgeois church, the middle class church, the rich church and the “Who’s Who in Chicago” church, our church has been able to do the “impossible” through the sacrifices and gifts of 8000 “ordinary people.” Only 4000 of our members, incidentally, made a commit-ment to the new worship center; but we did it anyhow! Over 1000 members of this congregation are unemployed. Over 2000 members of this congregation make under $30,000 a year. Everybody cannot give the same thing. We have said that for 33 years. Everybody can give something, however, and it is because of everybody giving something that we now stand on the precipice of victory! As I indicated to you, we borrowed the last $300,000 from our savings account to pay off the mortgage. I am asking you to join with me in putting that money back into savings. We can do it and we will do it. Thank you for your faithfulness and thank you for your support of my ministry. Gratefully yours,

Wants to remind you that November is...

National Hospice Month
MYTH: Hospice is a place where you go to die. FACT: Hospice is not a place, but rather a concept and philosophy of care for persons at the end of life. MYTH: Hospice is not affordable. FACT: Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. MYTH: Hospice means doing nothing for the loved one who is dying. FACT: Hospice care addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients and their families through services provided by medical and nursing staff, home health aides, social workers, chaplains and volunteer services. MYTH: Accepting Hospice is “giving up.” FACT: When a cure is not possible, Hospice care manages the patient’s pain and symptoms and provides spiritual support for the patient and family, allowing for a better quality of life during this final journey.

TO DO

JUSTICE

Micah 6:8

STEWARDSHIP
BIRDS OF A FEATHER
All birds, and only birds, have feathers, which are a wonderful gift from God. They are useful in many different ways. Feathers keep birds warm in freezing cold weather. Feathers are a soft lining in many birds’ nests. The songs of some birds are made louder by a ruffle of feathers. The structure and lightness of feathers enable most birds to fly. The list goes on. All people, and only people, have stewardship, which is another wonderful gift from God. It can be helpful in many different ways. People may contribute to a fuel fund that helps keep people warm. People may give blankets to the homeless so they have a softer place to sleep. People may purchase a recording of church services so that shut-ins can hear them. People donate money that enables missionaries to fly to distant lands. The list goes on. Two gifts, on the surface so different from each other, yet with God’s help, they both do so much good. Birds cannot think of new ways to use their feathers because they are controlled by instinct. God has given people reason, so we can think of new ways to use time, talents and treasure to help others. The Stewardship Ministry Constance A. King, Editor Stacey Moore, Chairperson

Earlier this year, the Illinois State legislature provided funds to the Chicago Transit Authority which prevented CTA from raising fares and eliminating routes. However, the CTA board has now recently decided to double its fares for Para-transit customers to $3.50 per ride. Consider who this decision is affecting. According to the 2004 Paratransit Customer Satisfaction Survey of all of the Paratransit customers: • 81.7% have an annual household income of $20,000 • 69.9% have incomes less than $15,000 • 47.6% have incomes less than $10,000 • 16.1% exist on incomes less than $5000 • 77.8% have no household vehicle • 58.4% are 65 years or older • 80% are African American • 43% live on the south side of Chicago Many of those who use the Paratransit services are on fixed Supplemental Security Incomes (SSI) of approximately $600 per month. Out of this $600 per month, they must pay rent, utilities, purchase food and utilize the transit services. To double the fares of persons already living on a tight budget will painfully and adversely affect persons trying to make it day by day. On Monday, November 28, 2005, the Chicago City Council Transportation Committee will be hosting a hearing on CTA’s 2006 Budget and Fare Hike. The hearing will be held at City Council Chambers at 121 N. LaSalle at 9:30 a.m. I encourage you to attend this hearing and let your voice be heard with regard to this issue. ACTION ITEMS 1. Attend the Transportation Committee’s hearing on CTA’s budget and fare hikes tomorrow. 2.
