[Project management lessons learned]—pass them on

A

NBDC e-newsletters
construct web sites as a side business. Recently we’ve been learning some hard lessons, usually what not to do. One answer is to edit our process manual. We take what we’ve learned and refine the process. That’s a great way to incorporate lessons learned into the next project. I have some projects that repeat once a year. The last thing I do when I put the project to bed is to type up a one page document that lists Lessons Learned from this year and suggestions for next year. The first thing I do when I start planning this year’s project is to pull out the top sheet of the file and read it. I seldom repeat the same mistake twice and each year the project gets easier to run. So often Lessons Learned gets written into some sort of document and never looked at again. Don’t let that happen to you! Get them into a format that will enable you to access them when a similar project comes along. Even better, use them to refine your process. Pass them onto to others. Do something with them. What have you learned today? Beth Giesbrecht has an extensive background in project management and teaches Success Project Management, Requirements Gathering, Process Mapping and Microsoft Project.

current watch word in Project Management is Best Practices. Some see this as a competitive advantage. Which vendor should we use for a current project? The one that incorporates Best Practices into their methodology. Yet many of us have, at best, a fuzzy process for gathering and documenting best practices, let alone incorporating them. If you have a problem in a project, which would you rather do: Call up someone and ask a question or look the problem up in a database? Yet so often our Lessons Learned are not passed on, to others or sometimes even to ourselves. So how do we pass lessons onto newer project managers? One project manager recently told me about a younger, more inexperienced project manager who asked him to reserve half an hour every day for him. The new guy asked him questions and recorded the answers every day. It was grueling for the experienced manager, but a very valuable learning experience for the younger guy. Maybe you can find someone to mentor you in this way, or become a mentor to someone less experienced. How do you capture lessons learned, if not for new people, even for yourself? At NBDC, we

Certificate in Project Management
IN TODAY’S COMPETITIVE BUSINESS CLIMATE, you are judged by the results of your last project. In this program, you learn the hard skills of scope, cost, time, risk, and resource management, as well as skills of team building and conflict resolution. To earn the Certificate, complete nine days of workshops. We recommend you begin with either Successful Project Management or IT Project Management. Go to nbdc.unomaha.edu/project for more information. Even if you are not interested in completing the Certificate program, individual workshops may be taken to increase your project management skills. Much of the curriculum is PMBOK-aligned (Project Management Body of Knowledge). Many NBDC workshops can be applied towards the 35 educational contact hour requirement to take the PMP exam. NBDC workshops may also qualify towards Professional Development Units (PDUs). NOTE: The documentation required upon PMI audit/request may include registration form, certificate or letter of attendance, and a brochure or course materials outlining the subject matter covered and the qualifications of the instructor/lecturer.
