David Hockney

Hotel Acatlan
Following the success of David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture at the Royal Academy of Arts, Andipa Gallery is delighted to present
Hotel Acatlan First Day | Second Day | Two Weeks Later | View of Hotel Well I
These works are the result of a period in February 1984 when, travelling in Mexico, Hockney had an unexpected stay at the Hotel Romano
Angeles in Acatlan, as a result of his car breaking down. Happily, the outcome was a series of bold and richly colourful works on his return
to Los Angeles, where he once again worked with his friend and master printmaker Kenneth Tyler.
All works are presented framed, signed by the artist and in excellent condition.
For further information please contact the gallery.

In art, new ways of seeing mean new ways of feeling; you cant divorce
the two, as, we are now aware, you cannot have time without space and
space without time.

I can get excitement watching rain on a puddle. And then I paint it.
Now, I admit, there are not too many people who would find that exciting.
But I would. And I want life thrilling and rich. And it is. I make sure it is.

David Hockney

Biography
Born in Bradford in 1937, David Hockney displayed a precocious talent for drawing and at the young age of eleven received a scholarship
to the prestigious Bradford Grammar School. Hockney was later accepted into the Royal College of Art in 1959: joining a generation of artists
who would later become renowned as founding British Pop Art, including Peter Blake and Allen Jones.
In 1963, Hockney travelled to New York and then settled in Los Angeles, where he became fascinated by the underground scene. At this
time he began to paint images of young tanned men and Malibu-style architecture in bright acrylics. He also began to work with photography
and photocollage, and created works of composite Polaroids called 'joiners'.
Most recently in 2012, a major exhibition of Hockney's latest work was celebrated as the most successful one-man show of a contemporary
artist at the Royal Academy in London.
