centre of technical excellence and is one of the
prestigious technical educational institutions in
Kerala. Foundation stone of the college was laid
by late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime
Minister of India, on 26
th
April 1958. The col-

college is offering undergraduate courses in 8
branches of engineering and postgraduate and
doctoral programme in many disciplines.
About the Department
Mechanical Engineering Department is one of
the oldest and the largest departments of the in-
stitute. The department offers two post graduate
programmes, Production Engineering and
Internal Combustion Engines and Turbo Ma-
chinery apart from the undergraduate pro-
gramme in Mechanical Engineering. The depart-
ment is a research centre of the University of
Calicut and also a QIP centre for higher studies
approved by AICTE.
About the TEQIP
Technical Education Quality Improvement Pro-
gramme (TEQIP) of Government of India aims
to improve the quality of Technical Education in
Engineering Institutions across the country by

providing inputs like modernization of labora-
tories/workshops, library, faculty development,
research and improve interaction with Industries
to become dynamic, demand driven, quality
conscious, responsive to rapid economic and
technological developments occurring both at
national and international levels.
Course Objective
Solution of many of the engineering research
problems are complex and hence require exten-
sive computation. Heuristics are considered as
the best solution methodology for these prob-
lems. The present course titled Soft Computing
Techniques in Research addresses various solu-
tion methodologies to such complex problems.
The course is designed to get broad understand-
ing about structure of various complex combina-
torial problems, its area of application in various
disciplines, various solution methodologies and
different computational tools used.
Topics
An overview of soft computing techniques
in optimisation
Complexity of algorithms
Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks
Genetic Algorithm Fundamentals & Design
Application of Ant Colony Optimization in
supply chain problems
Parallel computing in scientific applications
Programming using PYTHON
Multi-objective optimisation
