This slide show is going to show what we observed on our walk to Patton
Park. It also includes a brief description of what we saw before it displays
the images that we took from the trip.

We took this trip to gather information for our project Whats That Smell?
Investigating the Hidden Poison in South West., we were looking for
biological indicators and this is what we found.

We took everything that we found and researched what they are, why they
are there, and what do they do.
BRANCH WI THOUT BARK
MOSS
Living plants are already in use as biological indicators as they take up and accumulate pollutants. Mosses are especially well
suited as bio-indicators for airborne pollution as they have no roots and a very high surface-to-mass ratio.

Pollution on Trees Tapainaga Strong
General effect of pollution on trees.
*Ozone Near Ground Level: Interrupts photosynthesis by blocking
sunlight. It prevents the plant from getting sunlight stopping growth,
and even reducing forest and crops throughout the eastern United
States.

*Thinned Ozone Layers/Ozone Holes: Trees cannot effectively
use the sunlight to grow as they normally do. The ozone holes allow
too much ultraviolet light to the trees.

*Acid Rain: Can rob the soil of its nutrients preventing the tree from
growing. Causes leaf damage by wearing away protective leaf layers
allowing insects and weather conditions damage the leaves. Acid rain
can also damage roots causing the tree to die.

Media, 26 Oct. 2009. Web. 19 Aug. 2014.

Leaf Pollution.
*Symptoms of Ozone Damage: Severe leaf browning followed by
premature leaf drop.
Trees such as linden, maple, and green ash may exhibit ozone-injury
symptoms. Outer margins of linden trees display a minor black
mottling in early August. This then progresses into a severe marginal
tissue destruction.

Tree Diseases Selena Delgado

Bacterial wetwood usually looks like a tree is

leaking.

The trees that are most likely effected by

bacterial wetwood are elms, maples, populars,
oaks, and birches, it is still possible for any other
trees to be effected.

Wonder where the leaking comes from? Its

usually comes from their trucks or the branches.

Bacteria infect of the wood causes bacterial

wetwood.

This bacteria can smell pretty bad.

Although the tree cannot be cured, it can survive

many years after being effected.

Pollution makes trees more vulnerable to

infection and death from infections.

Ginko Trees Frenchesca Lassalle

- Ginkgo trees scientic name is Ginkgo
Biloba.
- For over 3000 years Ginkgo trees have been
the oldest tree in the planet.
- You could nd Ginkgo trees mainly in indoor
garden, temples, and in mountains.
- the Buddhist monks cultivated the tree form
about 1100 AD.
- In Japan and China used these trees for
medical help.
- They believed that the leafs of the ginkgo
tree cures short-term memory lost
- Ginkgo trees can grow up to 50-80 in
height.
- Male ginkgo trees are better for peoples
yards and cites
- Female ginkgo trees can bear fruit-like
products

OAK ACORN PL UM GAL L
Acorn Plum Galls are solid and juicy inside, and rather heavy for their size. Sometimes there is a gall wasp larva curled up
inside. Eventually the grub will metamorphose into a pupa, and then into a tiny adult gall wasp.

Lichen Nicholas Vega
Lichen is a crusty patch or a bushy like thing that
grows on trees, rocks and on the bare ground. Lichen
is very sensitive to sulphur dioxide pollution, making it
a good indicator when trying to gure out how much
pollution is in the area. Some lichen is more resistant
to pollution and is found in urban areas. The lichen
most resistant is found on walls, tree barks and
pavement, and is crust in appearance. On the other
hand if the air quality is great you will nd an abundant
amount of lichen of all different colors. The sensitive
lichen is are shrubby and leafy and can be found all
over a tree, ground and generally everywhere. The
lichen at Patton Park was denitely the more resistant
one, as it was very rare to nd and was only found on
some tree barks and the ground.
