PROPAGANDA MOVEMENT OR REFORM MOVEMENT aims to:
- assimilate the Philippines as a province of Spain

called ‘Filipinos’

• José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda

• He studied medicine and several languages
• He wrote Noli Me Tangere (Touch me not). He exposed the
defects of the Spanish administration of the Philippines, the
greed and the immorality of the friars and the superstitions of
the Filipinos
• El Filibusterismo (The Rebel). Expressed his political ideas and
predicted the coming of the revolution.
• He did not want the Philippines to have a revolution because
were not prepared to fight the Spaniards.
• He wrote essays, poems and many articles
• He founded the La Liga Filipina. A patriotic society which was
suspected of uniting and preparing the people for revolution.
These are the aims:
to unite the whole archipelago into one strong body
To give mutual protection of all members in case of
necessity
To encourage agriculture, commerce and education
To defend members against any kind of violence
To study and apply reforms
• He was executed in Bagumbayan (now Luneta) on Dec. 30,
1896.
 Spanish high officials were too busy with their own problems
 The reformist in Spain and in the Philippines have no necessary
financial means
 The reformist themselves were not united. There were jealousies
among them.
 The friars in the Philippines had influential friends and
supporters in Spain
