The goals for Math courses in Manitoba and across Western
Canada are to develop an understanding, curiosity and appreciation of
math in society, foster a positive attitude and perseverance towards math
and to nurture risk-taking when it comes to math problems and
discussions.

Transitional Math Content

We will be experiencing a variety of learning activities throughout
the course that will be complemented with basic notes on essential
topics. The units we will be studying are:
Fundamental Operations
Integers
Fractions, Decimals and Percents
Algebra
Triangles and Circles

Assessment Scheme

Several types of evaluation will be used in the course. This will
allow students to display their level of learning in a variety of manners
and also expand their skill levels in different presentation methods.
Mental Math 10%
Assignments/ Quizzes 30%
Tests/Projects 40%
Final Exam 20%
Mental Math
Mental Math activities will be presented 2-3 days a week and will make up 10% of your overall
grade. They are intended to reinforce mathematical reasoning and techniques as well as to help you
brush up on your basic math skills. Mental math sheets are collected once 6 activities are
completed...you get to throw out your lowest score of the 6 and have your best 5 recorded for your
marks.

Expectations
Overall Expectations
Your behavior in class must not prevent the teacher from giving the
lesson or interfere with anyone elses opportunity to learn. This means
only one-person talks at a time.
Arrive to class on time and prepared with your supplies (notebook,
textbook, pen, pencil, eraser, ruler).
Assignment Expectations
It is expected that all students will use class time wisely and complete all
assignments on time.
Absences
Excused/ Unexcused Absences.
o YOU are responsible for finding out what you missed and making
up all of the missed work.
Absences on Test Days
o Missed tests are to be written on the day that the student returns to
school unless otherwise negotiated with the teacher.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty includes activities like copying others' work, using
unauthorized cheat notes, misrepresenting circumstances to obtain
extensions or presenting someone else's work as your own (plagiarism).
Depending on the severity of the case, consequences may include a
warning, contact home, redoing the assignment or could result in a zero
mark or failure of the course. If you are having difficulty please speak to
me about it.
Taking steps to show responsibility and maturity won't receive a
negative response and will result in me assisting you to sort matters out.
Extra Help
Extra help is available whenever you need it.
I am usually in the classroom at lunch (except when on lunch duty) and
period 5
We are also usually available before school (~8:15 am) and most days
after school (please let me know if you are planning on coming in).

Email and Website

If you have questions you'd like to ask, but don't want to in class you are
welcome to ask me outside of class or you may send me an email at
dyckj@blsd.ca. Keep in mind my response time will depend on when I receive
the email. If you send an assignment to my email it is your responsibility to
check with me to ensure I have received it.

I will also be maintaining a website at mrsdyck.weebly.com where I will
have an electronic agenda of our daily lessons. This year I am also making an
effort to make as much of my materials electronic as possible. I will be doing my
best to post all of our lessons on my website in order to make them available to
you.
