I suppose that at this time of year we should be sitting back in a deckchair, feet
up, admiring all the work done over the past few months. Well, do just that and
enjoy your garden.
Also take a walk around. I like to walk around the garden and think of all the
people who have kindly given me bits of plants, slips and shoots. I can look at
plants and flowers from my parents garden and remember my early years as my
parents created and cared for their garden. Some of the plants from their garden
now live in my garden. I look at plants kindly given to me by friends and
remember them, some who have long since died. I dread to remember all the
plants which were given to me and have disappeared because I did not succeed
in their care. I look at plants (some of which have grown into trees!) which
were given to me on special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries -
memories, memories.
I love to smell the scents of flowers which bring back evocative memories -
sweetpea, roses, lavender, cat mint, geraniums. I also see the convolvulus and
the robin-run-the-hedge climbing up everywhere, but I leave it to another day
and return to the deckchair!
Don't forget to enjoy your garden and treasure the memories.

The Carry Centre
A wonderful evening on May 23rd marked the closure of the Hall for refurbishment. As
mentioned we then faced a major obstacle; however, through the generosity of our own
parishioners we have overcome it! The Rector wishes to put on record his gratitude for
the support and encouragement given to the project. We envisage the Centre being ready
for use at the beginning of November. In the meantime the parish users will use
various locations for their gatheringsplease consult each organisation for full
details. For more information visit www.carrycentre.ie
Pentecost
On the feast of Pentecost, we joined the clergy & parishioners of St Matthias, Ballybrack for
a festive Holy Communion in the Old Church of Killiney on Marino Ave. It certainly was a
memorable service for during the service the heavens opened not with tongues of fire but
buckets of rain well done to all those who attended!
Patronal Festival
The Annual Patronal Festival was marked with a special Parish Communion in Holy Trinity.
The guest preacher was the Very Revd Kenny Hall, Dean of Clogher (pictured above with the
Rector, Lay Reader & Churchwardens) Many thanks to Daphne Hall and her team who
decorated the church for the occasion.
Christian Aid
An uplifting service on May 11th marked the beginning of Christian Aid Week. Many thanks
to Marianne Irvine and her team who organised refreshments after the service and to all
those who support the work of Christian Aid.
Summer 2013
During the months of July and August the church was open to visitors. We are grateful to
the team of volunteers who assisted in making Holy Trinity more accessible to the wider
community.

News from the Select Vestry

David Millar writes, Each day begins with a Service, in which may be included hymns
with old words to new tunes or new hymns with old tunes or traditional hymns
which one thought one knew by heart only to find oneself caught out by a 21st-
century line in an old favourite dating back to the late 1700s. One needs to be on
ones toes. In his address the Archbishop of Armagh pointed to the individuality of
the life of each one of us, and the need to look beyond our own selves into the
world in which our children and grandchildren will live.
Synod Bills are required to pass three readings before passing into Church law. Many
involve non-controversial up-dates, but others demand detailed debate, and not all
get through. Only one - that sought a gender balance among elected parochial
nominators - failed, narrowly enough, on the grounds that not all parishes could
meet a legislated requirement.
Reports and presentations included that of the Bishops Appeal, only 6.3% of the
funds raised go in expenses, which stated that many projects do not make the media
and that some are overtaken by even more urgent disasters elsewhere. Talk of
reduced time allowable for religious education, with a concentration placed on
religions generally rather than any particular religion believed in by the individual,
made for a lively discussion. Questions were again raised about Church silver lying in
safes. The increasing problem which parishes are facing regarding their buildings, the
painstaking steps which have been taken with regard to clergy pensions with the
retirement age rising to 68, the report of the Parish Development Working Group,
and commemorations surrounding events between 1913 and 1922 were some of the
many other diverse subjects discussed.
Again this year, towards the end of the second day, the meeting broke into
discussion groups. We were presented with questions the answers to which
deserved more time than their complexity and diversity allowed, and merit further
consideration within parishes, and subsequent re-visiting.
Next years Synod meeting will be held in Armagh, but with the need to provide for
an attendance of 650 (not quite a third larger than the Church of England) though the
attendance each day this year reached only 65%, increasingly urgent questions for
the future raise their heads.
Constant change is here to stay may well sum up the meeting.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS!
Im a full time working Mum of two, so every day tends to
be hectic and varied! I work as Head of Internal
communications for Ericsson, responsible for employee
communications across 16 European countries. There
really isnt a typical day but I am constantly on the phone,
on video conference or on my laptop. If Im not doing that
then I travelling to or from an airport, office or hotel. Im
very lucky, my time with Ericsson has allowed me to
travel all over the world, the hotels are definitely better
than when I did it on a shoe string as a backpacker. When
Im at home I juggle home and work luckily Dave, my husband, is very extremely
understanding and does most of the work! If I have time and the inclination then
I try and keep fit by walking or running walking the Vico Road, no matter what
the weather always makes me smile and realise how lucky I am.

New Logo
You may have noticed the new logo for Holy Trinity. To explain:
The Purple and Yellow crescents are taken from the Carry Centre logo and
symbolise the Centre and Community. The Blue crescent, which supports the
other two, represents the church. The three
together make a Trinity. The Y is thought to
look like a person and one on top of another
symbolises how we support one another, our
community and how God supports us. We
thank Linda Peters for her help with making this
possible.

Restaurant Review - You light my FIRE!!!
FIRE is a restaurant/cocktail bar situated on Dawson St., beside The Mansion
House, which caters for all adult ages and tastes. I have never had anything less
than superb food there and a recent meal continued that theme.
The Pre-Theatre menu at 29.50 for 3 courses with tea or coffee is great value
and is available at varying times during the week. A snapshot of what was
consumed - juicy Garlic Prawns in melted herb butter with chorizo, Irish Hake
Fillet and a chocolate framboise, (pictured), all beautifully presented and preceded
by complimentary warm fresh breads and dips.
Other choices include novel variations on vegetarian, chicken, steak and fish
options so there is something for everyone. The service is always just the right
side of attentive without being overbearing. It is a spectacular location, especially
if seated in the circular main dining room, and a lovely place to bring family and
friends visiting Dublin. See website: www.mansionhouse.ie/fire-restaurant/

It was a dull wet afternoon when we flew into Glasgow Prestwick on the west
coast of Scotland. The airport is now very dilapidated (it recently sold for 1)
but boasts one major claim to fame, it is the only piece of British soil on which
Elvis Presley stood, his plane re-fueled at the airport during a stop off on his
journey home from military service in Germany. Walking across the soaking
tarmac to the paint-peeled building, I could not blame him for never returning.
We hired a car, a compact but zippy little number with the most unexpected of
added extras, a soft top. A retractable roof is not altogether useful in the
Scottish climate, but, owing to the novelty value, we made full use of the feature,
and headed off with the wind, and possibly a few spots of rain, in our hair. We
travelled north from Prestwick to Wemyss Bay and from there it was a short
ferry ride to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. In its heyday the island was a major
tourist destination, with thousands of holidaymakers and day trippers travelling
on the steamers down from Glasgow. It is now a lot quieter, and still very
pleasant. The island is a haven for walkers and cyclists with many beautiful routes
crisscrossing the landscape. The Mount Stuart estate is one of the most popular
attractions on the island. The house has been described as an architectural
masterpiece and one of the worlds greatest houses. It was designed by Sir
Robert Anderson for the 3rd Marquess of Bute in the late 1870s and reflects the
eccentricity of the Marquess, and excessive wealth that the family had acquired
through astute marriages and business dealings. At the time the Marquess was
the richest man in the UK and the house very much demonstrates this.
Our stay on Bute was short, but perhaps if you decide to visit for yourself you
might see us there, I am sure we will be back.
