Winterize To Safeguard Your

Home From Harsh Weather

It is almost time to bid adieu to the

warm days of summer. Chilly afternoons
followed by continually dropping temperatures are on the horizon, and fall is the
perfect time to service the home furnace
to ensure it is ready to withstand the demands of winter.
Furnace maintenance should be done
on a regular basis. The best time to do so is
in late summer or early fall, when you still
have enough time to address any problems
before it gets too cold outside.
HVAC systems malfunctions are typically caused by one of a handful of common problems. Inspecting certain components can help to guarantee a furnace is
in working order when the first cold days
arrive.
FILTER AND AIR INTAKES
After several months of running the air
conditioning, the filter on the heating and
cooling system may need to be changed.

in a home. A good rule of
thumb when determining if
your attic needs more insulation is to look for the ceiling joists. If you can see the
joists, then you need more
insulation.
Address leaky windows
and doors. Sometimes attic
insulation is not the culprit when it comes to a cold
home. Oftentimes, leaky
windows and doors are the
real bad guys in a drafty
home. Fall is a great time to
inspect for leaky windows
and doors, as the wind outside can serve as your partner. When the wind outside
is blowing, take a tour of
your homes windows and
doorways, standing next to
them to determine if there
any holes or leaks that are
letting outdoor air inside.
If you notice any leaks beneath exterior doors, install some door sweeps to
keep outdoor air where it
belongs. Leaks around windows can be snuffed out
with caulk or weather stripping.
Test the furnace. Homeowners typically do not
devote much thought to
their furnaces in spring,
summer and fall. But with
winter on the horizon, fall is

is heavily soiled. Furnace filters are relatively inexpensive. Since this thin barrier
will be responsible for cleaning the air you
breathe, it is important to keep a fresh filter in the unit. A clogged, dirty filter will
reduce the efficiency of the HVAC system
and may contribute to poor indoor air and
allergies.
Check the air intakes around the house
for obstructions. Do not place furniture
directly in front of intakes or venting that
delivers air to the home, as this can compromise air flow and force the unit to work
harder. Without adequate air flow through
the system, the furnace may not turn on.
Many systems also have some sort of
external vent or exhaust pipe. Check that
the area is free of leaves, debris and animal
nests. Again, any blockages can impede
the efficiency of the unit or cause it to fail.

to make sure its ready for
the months ahead. Expect
a somewhat foul yet brief
odor to appear when starting the furnace. That odor
should dissipate shortly,
but if it does not go away,
then your furnace is likely
in need of repair. But even
if the smell does not stick
around, you might want to
have the furnace cleaned
by a professional anyway.
Such cleaning ensures the
furnace works efficiently
throughout the winter.
Clean the garage.
You might not mind parking in the driveway during
the warmer months of the
year, but why subject your
vehicles to harsh winter
weather if you dont have
to? Clean the garage in the
fall so you have an indoor
parking spot throughout
the winter season. Protecting your car from the elements can add years to its
life and also saves you the
trouble of digging your car
out of the snow.
Fall is a time of year for
homeowners to spend a
weekend or two preparing
their homes for the often
harsh weather that awaits
when winter arrives.

Autumn is a beautiful
time of year marked by welcoming cooler temperatures
and the natural beauty of
leaves changing colors. Autumn also has a tendency
to fly by, as if the powerful weather of winter simply cannot wait to make its
presence felt.
With such a seemingly
short time between the end
of summer and the dawn of
winter, homeowners know
they dont have too many
weekends in between to
prepare their homes for the
potentially harsh months
ahead. But such preparation, often referred to as
winterizing, can make
a home more comfortable
when the mercury dips below freezing, while saving
homeowners
substantial
amounts of money along
the way.
Clean the gutters.
Leaves falling in fall can be
a beautiful sight to behold
but many of those leaves
are likely finding their way
into your gutters, where
they can lodge and cause
a host of problems down
the road. If the leaves and
additional debris, such as
twigs and dirt, that pile
up in your gutters are not
cleared out before the first
winter storm, the results
can be costly and even catastrophic.
Winter rain and snowfall
needs a place to go upon
hitting your roof, and gutters facilitate the travel of
such precipitation from
your roof into street-level
drainage systems. If gutters
are backed up with leaves
and other debris, then ice
dams may form, forcing water to seep in through the
roof. That damage can be
costly and can even cause
the roof to collapse inward
in areas with heavy snowfall. Clean gutters throughout the fall, especially if
your property has many
trees, and be sure to check
gutters one last time before
the arrival of winter.
Tend to your attic. Homeowners who have attics
in their homes might want
to add some extra insulation up there, especially
those who recall feeling cold
inside their homes last winter, which is often a telltale
sign of improper insulation

Home Improvement Projects Perfect For Fall Tips For Unclogging Drains
Home improvement projects can add value to a home

the sweat-equity that goes

homeowners a greater sense
of pride in their homes. But
no two home improvement
projects are the same, and
homeowners should know
that certain projects are

times of the year.
Fall is a great season to
work on your house, as the
weather is often at its most
agreeable once the summer
heat has gone and before
winter weather arrives. The
following are a handful of
fall-friendly home improvement projects for homeowners looking to improve their
homes.

Clogged drains can be

a nuisance. And if left untreated, that minor nuisance can turn into an expensive repair.
A number of different
things can cause drains to
clog. Food particles, hair,
grease, soap residue, oil,

each cause a drain to clog.

Budget-Friendly Bathroom
Transformation Tips
The allure of a spa-style bathroom is something few
homeowners can resist. Such bathrooms can make for a
welcome retreat after a long day at the office or an afternoon spent chasing kids around the yard.
But as appealing as such a sanctuary may seem, the
cost of creating a luxury washroom is more than many
homeowners budgets can withstand. Fortunately, a
dream bathroom does not have to break the bank. In
fact, there are several ways to make a bathroom worthy of the most comforting spa without stretching your
budget.
Install a wall-hung mirror. If your idea of a luxury
bathroom harkens back to a time before the advent of
recessed medicine cabinets, then a wall-hung mirror can
give the bathroom an entirely new feel without much of
a financial commitment. Flush-mount mirrors need not
require the services of a contractor, but they can provide
a sense of elegance that recessed cabinets cannot.
Replace bathroom counter tops. A counter top replacement job may sound expensive, but such an undertaking is not very costly in the washroom, where counter
space is typically limited. Since the cost of counter top
materials is by the square foot, you can replace bathroom surfaces for a relatively small amount of money.
Granite counter tops can be beautiful, but such surfaces do not create the warm feel that many prefer in a
luxury bathroom. A material such as soapstone is warm
and inexpensive and can quickly give the bathroom a
new look.
Embrace calm colors. Painting the bathroom is another inexpensive way to give the room an entirely new
look. If the walls of your washroom are currently a vibrant color, consider a more calming tone to give the
room the luxurious and relaxing feel youre aiming for.
If your bathroom includes a claw foot tub, you also can
make it a two-tone tub to add a touch of relaxing elegance. Paint the tubs exterior in a calming tone such as
soft gray, and you will have transformed the washroom
at little cost and even less effort.
Transform your double vanity. Many homeowners
prefer a double vanity in their bathrooms, as such a setup allows both men and women the space to get ready
for bed or work without getting in one anothers way.
But instead of a traditional vanity with a counter between the sinks, consider installing matching pedestal
sinks to surround an antique washstand. This can give
the washroom a feel of antique luxury, and such washstands can found for a few hundred dollars.
Replace old fixtures. Though they are often overlooked, cabinet and door fixtures as well as towel racks
can greatly influence the feel of a washroom. If the cabinet and drawer handles are old or outdated, replace
them with more modern options. Such a job might be
even more effective if you repaint or re-face existing cabinetry. Neither task is terribly expensive, but both can
give the washroom a more luxurious feel. The same goes
for replacing old towel racks, which can be an eyesore if
theyre especially dated.
Transforming a bathroom may seem like a significant
and costly undertaking, but savvy homeowners can
give their washrooms a new and luxurious look without
spending much money.

Counter Top Options Abound Today

Many things in a kitchen contribute to giving this popular room its
personality. Appliances and choice of
cabinets go a long way toward crafting that look, but perhaps nothing
defines a kitchen more than a homeowners choice of counter tops.
Counter tops are where the action
takes place in a kitchen. Its where
meals are prepared and where hungry house guests or curious kids
watch the family chef whip up the
nights meal. The options with regard
to counter top surfaces are numerous, and the following are just a few of
the more popular options homeowners planning to replace their existing
surfaces might want to consider.
LAMINATE
Laminate counter tops are popular and affordable. Made of sheeting
glued to plywood or particleboard
substrate, laminate counter tops are
water-resistant but not very heat-resistant, so homeowners will want to
place any hots pans, pots or baking
sheets on trivets to maintain the laminate. Many homeowners prefer laminate counter tops because they are
available in so many colors, meaning they can match any homeowners
preferences, no matter how colorful
those preferences are. Cutting on
laminate counter tops is not recommended, but such surfaces are easy
to clean and maintain.
QUARTZ
Quartz is among the most durable
counter top surfaces available, as it
is resistant to bacteria, heat, stains,
and water. Though quartz is not available in as many shades as laminate,
it is similarly easy to clean. Also like
laminate counter tops, quartz surfaces tend to have easily visible seams,
which may irk homeowners who find
such minor imperfections an eyesore.
Quartz counter tops can be expensive
depending on the amount of surface
area a kitchen has, so budget-conscious homeowners with especially
large kitchens may find quartz counter tops bust their budgets.
GRANITE
The natural beauty of granite is
what draws many homeowners to
install this popular surface material in their kitchens. Thanks to their
unique shading and tone, granite
counter tops are never the same from
one home to the next, and granite
complements many different cabi-

MANY TO CHOOSE FROM ... Homeowners have many options when picking
out the right counter top for their space and budget.

net colors. Granite also is resistant

to heat, scarring and, when sealed
properly, stains. Granite is naturally
porous, so if it is not sealed properly,
it can harbor bacteria. Some granite counter tops must be sealed annually, while some pretreated counter tops can go as long as 15 years
without a need for resealing. Unlike
other counter top surface materials,
granite, which is among the most expensive counter top materials, does
not come in a vast array of colors, so
homeowners should expect to choose
from just 20 or so color options.
RECYCLED GLASS
Homeowners who want to give
their kitchens a modern and ecofriendly feel may want to consider
recycled glass counter tops. Recycled
glass counter tops, the majority of
which are now produced with 80 to
90 percent post-consumer glass, are
made of pieces of glass that are held

together with cement binders. Some

might be concerned that counter tops
made of recycled glass are not very
strong, but the cement binders are
very hard, making the counter tops
durable, strong and unlikely to chip
or crack. Recycled glass counter tops
come in various colors and are resistant to both heat and stains. Installation of recycled glass counter tops
can be tricky, as improper installation can lead to stress points that
make the glass susceptible to cracking. As a result, the installation of recycled glass counter tops is best left
to professionals with experience on
such projects. Recycled glass counter
tops can be quite expensive as well.
A homeowners choice of counter
top surface material can go a long
way toward defining the personality
of his or her kitchen, so homeowners
should consider their options before
making a final decision.

How To Stay Within Your Home Improvement Budget Understanding Attic Insulation
Home improvement
projects range from small
scale undertakings that
can be tackled in a single
weekend to large remodels that can take several
months to complete. While
no two projects are the
same, every home improvement project demands that
homeowners dip into their
pockets and spend some
money.
Much like the scale of
projects varies greatly, so,
too, do the financial commitments required of homeowners to make those
projects a reality. But no
matter the size of the project, homeowners can find
ways to stretch their budgets without sacrificing the
quality of their improvements.
Do your homework.
Before you decide to make
changes to your home, its
best to first do some research into any potential
projects youre considering. Many homeowners
have decided to dive into
a project before they fully
realize its scope and cost,
and going in blind can bust
a budget, turning what
might have seemed like a
relatively simple project
into a money pit.
Understanding
just
what a project entails and
how much its likely to cost
can give homeowners an
idea of what they can af-

ford and where they might

be able to stretch their
budgets. For example, if
you want to replace your
kitchen countertops but
cant afford engineered
quartz countertops, you
might be able to find a
less expensive alternative,
such as tile, that you like
just as much. But its best
to research such alternatives before you decide to
replace your existing countertops. If you cant find a

less expensive alternative,

you might want to postpone the project until you
can grow your budget. But
starting the project without first grasping its true
cost is a recipe for disaster,
so do your homework before you find your toolbox
and start working.
Build unforeseen expenses into your budget.
Another way to stay within
your budget is to include
budget-busting unforeseen
expenses into the budget
from the get-go. Whether
youre doing the project
yourself or paying a contractor, nearly every home
improvement project will
present some unforeseen,
and costly, hurdles. For
example, you might find
mold inside the walls when
youre converting a basement, and it can cost a
pretty penny to make that
mold go away. If you go
into the project expecting
such hurdles, then the financial sting of addressing
them wont prove too great
a burden. But if the mold
catches you and your budget completely off guard,
you might be forced to
overextend that budget or
make sacrifices elsewhere
in order to complete the
project. Build some contingency money, including
permit and permit fees,
into your home improvement project to safeguard
against such unforeseen
issues.
Get to work. If youre
hiring a contractor, speak
to him or her before signing a contract to see if there
is anywhere you can pitch
in to keep the labor costs
low. You might be able to
pitch in during the demolition phase, saving the cost
of paying your contractors
workers to tear down walls
or remove debris you can

just as easily remove yourself. Another way to pitch

in is to do the end-of-day
cleanup yourself. Any role
you play with regard to labor will likely need to be
negotiated upfront, but you
can save yourself a substantial amount of money
on labor if youre willing to
get your hands dirty.
Determine if piecemeal is the most affordable option. Sometimes it
makes sense to tackle one
project at a time, while
other times you might
want to combine projects
to save on the cost of materials. For instance, if your
ultimate goal is to install
wood flooring throughout
your home, determine if
it makes more financial
sense to install the flooring all at once rather than
doing one or two rooms at
a time. You might save by
buying all of your materials
at once rather than buying
a small amount of materials several times over the
next several years.
Home
improvement
projects often go a long
way toward making a home
more enjoyable for its owners and inhabitants. And
while such projects can be
costly, homeowners who
stay disciplined can still get
their dream homes without
busting their budgets.

Insulation is one of the best investments a homeowner

can make, but too often people overlook insulation in favor
of more eye-catching renovations. Insulation is not something to be ignored, as it contributes to year-round comfort
in the home while reducing energy costs along the way.
According to the Energy Star program, you should add
more insulation if the existing insulation is just level with
or below the floor joists of your attic. If you cannot see
any of the floor joists because the insulation is well above
them, you probably have enough and adding more may not
be cost-effective. In addition, check to see if the insulation
is an even thickness across the entire attic. Sometimes it
can be thicker in the middle and then peter out toward the
eaves.
Attic insulation is measured according to its R-Value,
which measures the insulations ability to resist heat flow.
The higher the R-Value, the better the thermal performance
of the insulation. In many climates, the recommended level
for homes is R-38. If you prefer more insulation, increase
the R-Value.
Insulation is made from different materials, including
fiberglass, cellulose and rock wool. It comes in different
forms. Rolls and batts are some of the more commonly
used types of insulation. Loose-fill insulation is a loose
insulation with no backing that is usually blown into a
space. Rigid foam and foam-in-place insulation are additional types of insulation.
The type of insulation used depends on where the insulation is needed and your budget. Certain materials are not
applicable for particular uses, and typically insulation that
provides a higher R-Value tends to be more expensive. Examine the cost-effectiveness of the type of insulation being
considered before application. You also can mix and match
insulations depending on the application.
The U.S. Department of Energy offers these additional
tips with regard to insulation.
Consider factors such as your climate, home design
and budget when selecting insulation for your home.
Use higher R-Value insulation, such as spray foam, on
exterior walls and in cathedral ceilings to get more insulation with less thickness.
Install attic air barriers, such as wind baffles, along
the entire attic eave to help ensure proper airflow from the
soffit to the attic. Ventilation helps with moisture control
and reduces summer cooling bills, but dont ventilate your
attic if you have insulation on the underside of the roof.
Ask a qualified contractor for recommendations.
Be careful how close you place insulation next to a
recessed light fixture -- unless it is insulation contact (IC)
rated -- to avoid a fire hazard.
Follow the manufacturers installation instructions,
and wear the proper protective gear when installing insulation.
In addition to making a home more comfortable, insulation also can buffer noise, making the home more peaceful.
Insulation can reduce noises from outside the home as well
as absorb sounds from inside.

Fall Chimney Cleaning Tips

How To Rid Your Home Of Drafts

BLOCKING THE DRAFT ... Outlets and light switches can be significant sources of
drafts in a home. Stopping the drafts can help reduce the cost of heating and cooling.
Think about what it might be like if you
turned up the heat and then opened all
of the windows in your home. All of that
warm air would rush right out, and you
would be left with a cold home and a hefty
heating bill.
A home that is full of drafts is inefficient
and expensive. And drafty homes are not
just a problem when the weather is cold,
as air that seeps in when youre trying to
keep the home cool can be an inefficient
nuisance as well. Higher energy bills and
wasted resources do not have to be tolerated if you simply scour your home for
drafts, sealing them to cut energy costs
and make the home more comfortable.
Drafts are often small cracks around
windows and doors, but there are many
other places where drafts can form. Knowing some of the less visible spots where
drafts come from may help you to seal out
unwanted cold air more effectively.
ATTIC
Homes that feature attics with pulldown stairs tend to be drafty. In such
homes, a large hole is cut out of the ceiling so residents can access the attic. So
instead of thick insulation, these homes
may only have a sheet of plywood blocking
your interior space from the outdoors, as
many attics are directly vented to the roof.
To determine if there is a leak, turn on the
attic light, close the attic door, and check
to see if you can see the light on from below. If you can, then there is a gap letting
both the light and air escape. In addition
to using flexible rubber around the opening of the attic to better seal the door when
it is closed, you can think about adding a
thicker, more insulated door.
DRYER VENTS
The standard home laundry dryer vents
outdoors via an exhaust duct. This duct
is open to the outdoors, and it may be letting cold air into the home. Thats because
there is typically a flimsy flapper made of
sheet metal on the outside of the vent to
help protect against air infiltration. But
over time dryer lint can accumulate at the
vent opening, causing the metal flapper to
stay open when it should close. Homeowners can invest in dryer seals that close the
vent when the dryer is not in use. Not only

does this prevent cold air from entering

the house, but also it keeps out pests, like
bugs and rodents.
PIPES
Check pipes that exit the home, such
as those that feed outdoor water spigots, as such pipes can let cold air back
into the house. The same can be said for
waste pipes. Also, check to see if pipes
that connect to garages, basements and
crawl spaces are not insulated. Use sealant around these pipes to block drafts into
the home. Foam insulation can be sprayed
into small crevices, where it will expand
and harden, blocking off air access. These
damp, cool spots are also great places for
insects to enter the home. Sealing drafts
also may prevent bugs from entering the
home.
FIREPLACES
Although fireplaces often make for decorative and appealing accents to a home,
many are not effective sources of ambient
heat. They may draw more warm air out
of the flue than they bring into the house.
When a fireplace is not in use, air can rise
out of the chimney and a draft can be felt
in the home. Some studies indicate that an
open damper on an unused fireplace, even
in a well-insulated home, can increase
overall heating and cooling energy consumption by 30 percent.
If you simply must have a fireplace, remember to always keep the damper shut
when the fireplace is not in use and use
a glass cover you can seal tightly to further block the opening to the fireplace from
your living space. Fireplace plugs, which
can keep out drafts during the season
when fireplaces are not in use, may also be
a worthwhile investment.
ELECTRICAL OUTLETS
Outlets and light switches can be significant sources of drafts in a home. Check
to see that the switch plates are secure. If
drafts still come through, then employ outlet draft blockers to prevent cool air from
entering the home and warm air from exiting it.
Homeowners can address drafts in a
variety of ways. And doing so can make
a home more comfortable and cut energy
costs considerably.

Homeowners whose homes have fireplaces understand that a little more maintenance goes into autumn prep work for
their homes than for those homeowners
without fireplaces. Readying the fireplace
for another season of use requires some
upkeep.
A clean fireplace and chimney is the
best defense against hazardous conditions
that can cause a chimney or home fire. For
those who did not clean their chimneys
in the spring after extensive winter use, it
is imperative to handle cleaning prior to
lighting your first fire in the coming winter.
Chimney cleaning can be a do-it-yourself job. Rods and brushes can cost as
much as $150, depending on where you
live. That is roughly equivalent to the cost
of hiring a professional chimney sweep
once. But if you have a fear of heights or
prefer not to climb up on the roof to inspect the chimney, you may just want to
hire a professional.
When cleaning your chimney, first
place plastic sheeting in the fireplace and
around the opening to the fireplace inside the home. Then climb up on the roof
and remove the chimney cap inspecting
the chimney for soot and creosote, which
tends to be thickest at the mouth of the
chimney where it will cool and stick to the
inside of the masonry. Use the correct size
brush for your chimney to make adequate
surface contact to sweep out the debris.
Go inside and clean up the residual mess,
then reach up into the chimney from the
fireplace side and remove any other soot

before moving into the basement (or wherever the chimney reaches the bottom) to
remove any soot that has dropped from
that area as well.
Cleaning a chimney is a messy task
that will take some work, but it is a task
that needs to be done to safeguard a home
before the arrival of winter.

These Professionals Can

Help Maintain Your Home
Home repairs are inevitable. For the homeowner who also happens to be handy
with a hammer, the occasional home repair is nothing to fear and something that
many even enjoy. But there many homeowners who arent so adept at home repairs, and such men and women typically
rely on trained professionals when something goes awry around the house. For
those homeowners who either dont have
the time or the ability to fix issues that
arise around the house, the following is a
breakdown of three of the more commonly
called on home service providers.
ELECTRICIAN
An electrician specializes in addressing
a buildings or homes electrical wiring issues, stationary machines and the equipment related to those machines. Electricians can fix existing issues, but many
also can design and install new electrical
components and systems. The dangers of
working with electrical systems are many,
so electricians typically must be certified
and licensed before they can practice their
trade. Such danger is one reason why even
those who are adept at fixing problems
around the house might want to hire an
electrician should an electrical issue arise.

and sewage. Though not all jurisdictions

require a plumber be licensed before he
or she can practice, many do, and it can
take years of training and experience to
master the skill of plumbing. Many people
call a plumber when a toilet or sink backs
up, but plumbers must have far more extensive skills as well. Plumbers must be
skilled in a number of areas, including
having an ability to read and understand
a homes blueprints, detect faults in a
plumbing system if the homeowner cannot
install and repair fixtures and systems,
and be aware of any legal requirements to
ensure a home is safe.

LANDSCAPER
Homeowners have increasingly looked
to professional landscapers to maintain
their homes exterior and subsequently
ensure their property value remains high.
A typical landscaper offers his client an array of services, from cutting the grass to
raking leaves to more complicated tasks
that gravitate toward landscape architecture. A homes curb appeal has been
shown to vastly improve a prospective
buyers impression of the house, and as a
result many homeowners rely on a landscaper to take care of their property. Many

Did You Know?

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection

Agency, inadequate ventilation in a home can increase
indoor air pollution levels. Those pollutant levels rise
in a poorly ventilated home because not enough outdoor air is making its way into a home to dilute emissions from indoor sources of pollution. In addition, in
a poorly ventilated home, indoor air pollutants are not
being carried out of the home, leaving the pollutants to
linger and potentially putting the health of the homes
residents at risk. Though it might seem counter intuitive
to allow outdoor air into a home during winter, when
such air tends to be at its coldest, such outdoor air can
protect a homes inhabitants from the immediate effects
of indoor air pollution, which include irritation of the
eyes, nose and throat, as well as headaches, dizziness
and fatigue. Long-term effects of prolonged exposure
to indoor air pollution can include respiratory disease,
heart disease and cancer. But homeowners who want
to increase outdoor air infiltration in their homes do not
have to open the windows even when temperatures dip.
A simple inspection of mechanical ventilation systems,
such as bathroom and kitchen fans and air handling
systems that employ fans and ducts to remove indoor
air and distribute filtered and conditioned outdoor air
throughout a home, may be all thats necessary to ensure indoor air stays healthy during the winter.

As quickly as autumn weather arrives it seems to move

aside for the blustery, cold days of winter. Winter can
catch a person off guard and the seasons are now less
predictable than ever before.
Its never too early to begin preparing your yard and
outdoor living spaces for winter. Homeowners may be sad
to bid farewell to the furniture and accessories of the fairweather season, but time is of the essence when prepping
for impending ice and snow.
Clean patio furniture. Give cushions and structures
a thorough cleaning and allow to dry completely. Cleaning
items before storing them for the winter saves time and
energy next year when its time once again to set up the
yard for recreation. If anything is damaged beyond repair,
discard it and look for replacements during end-of-season
sales when savings can be had.
Move things indoors. The more items you can store
in a safe and secure location the better. Load the garage,
basement or storage shed with outdoor gear. Leaving
items exposes them to the elements, and such exposure
can cause rust, wear and damage. Flower pots and lawn
ornaments also can blow around in winter wind or collapse under the weight of the snow, so collect these items
and store them for the winter. Take out patio umbrellas
and put them in the shed. If something is too large to
move indoors, such as a barbecue or a pool filter, cover it
with a durable tarp and secure it with rope.
Cover delicate trees. Depending on where you live,
certain fruit trees, including fig trees, may need to be
covered for the winter. Covering protects them from subfreezing temperatures and helps ensure they will rebound
in the spring. Tropical plants should be moved indoors
where they can thrive in a heated home. Do not rip out
chrysanthemum plants. Contrary to popular belief, these
are not annuals. They will rebloom year after year if allowed to do so.
Remove water collectors. Bring in or cover anything
that may accumulate water, such as bird baths or kids
toys. Water expands when frozen, and that means water
trapped in any ceramic, glass or even plastic vessel can
expand and cause the container to crack.
Clean up leaves and debris. Piles of leaves not only
can suffocate a lawn and cause discoloration, but also
can be attractive homes for rodents and insects looking
for a warm place to spend their winters. Keep your yard
neat and clean to discourage wildlife from taking up residence near your home.

FALL CLEAN UP... Autumn is a busy time for preparing

your home and yard for the arrival of winter weather.
Cover vegetable and flower beds. Invest in some burlap to lay down over planting beds. This helps to keep the
ground from freezing over and minimize weeds for next
season.
Care for outdoor ponds. If you have a pond on your
property, remove any weeds around it and fish out any
leaves from the water. Leaves will decay in the water and
build up ammonia levels that can harm fish. If the pond
is small, cover it for the winter. Also, start cutting back on
feeding outdoor fish. These aquatic animals bodies begin
to prepare for winter by slowing down metabolism. Continuing to feed them can harm the fish when the temperature drops.
Wrap up pool season. Its wise to close the pool and
cover it before leaves start to drop. Otherwise you will
have a hard time of keeping the water clean.
Plant spring bulbs now. Now is a good time to plan
where you want to put spring bulbs. Once you have
mapped things out, get the bulbs in the ground. Bulbs
are relatively inexpensive and will provide that first punch
of color when winter finally skips town.

Choosing the right flooring for a

home is no small task. Flooring is
expensive, so homeowners want to
make the best decision possible so
their choice of flooring is not one they
regret and ultimately replace in the
years to come.
Educating yourself about flooring
is a great way to make the process of
choosing your next floor much less
overwhelming and more enjoyable.
The following are some of the more
popular flooring options.
HARDWOOD
Nearly everyone is familiar with
hardwood floors, which are durable,
warm and a favorite of homeowners
aiming for a traditional look. Homes
with open floor plans often benefit
from hardwood flooring, as it creates
the feeling of continuity that homeowners hope to achieve with open
floor plans. Solid wood flooring can be

ENGINEERED WOOD
Engineered wood is less susceptible to temperature changes and
humidity than solid wood, and some
new varieties of engineered wood include substrates made from recycled
wood fiber and stone dust, which may
appeal to eco-friendly homeowners.
BAMBOO
Bamboo is another flooring alternative thats popular among eco-conscious homeowners, as it comes from
plants that regenerate quickly and is
therefore considered a sustainable
material. Bamboo flooring is made of
strands of bamboo that are glued together, forming engineered planks or
solid strips. Bamboo flooring is strong
and able to resist the negative effects
of fluctuating humidity, which in-

clude swelling and contraction. Many

people prefer the fresh, bright feel of
bamboo flooring.
LAMINATE
Laminate flooring is among the
less expensive flooring materials to
buy and install. Homeowners who
purchase laminate flooring have an
array of options to choose from, and
floating laminate flooring systems can
be installed over existing floors without glue or nails.
CORK
Cork is another sustainable flooring material thats a favorite among
homeowners looking to make their
homes more eco-friendly. The appearance of cork floors is unlike
many flooring materials, as it is
speckled thanks to unusual grain
patterns of the trees from which it is
harvested.

Small Projects Add Up To Big Appeal

Whether Youre Building Your Dream Home or a Pole Barn,

Weve Got You Covered!

In this economy, homeowners are

watching every penny. Just because money is tight doesnt mean every renovation
plan has to be cast aside. Smaller projects
can revitalize a room without a big investment.
Homeowners who dont have much to
spend still dont want to compromise quality with smaller improvements. Therefore,
theyre often thinking of big appeal, albeit
on a smaller scale.
To get started, homeowners should
look at the rooms they use the most and
begin there. Whats the point of starting in
a guest room or renovating the basement
if its rarely used? Put available funds to
work on the rooms that get seen.
For example, the kitchen is a popular
room in many homes. If budget doesnt allow for a re-haul of appliances or cabinets,
think about less expensive ways to modify
the space. A new faucet can give the room
a different look, as can replacing cabinet
hardware and hinges. Revitalize the appearance of the room with new flooring,
such as laminate that mimics the look of
stone, wood or other natural surfaces.
Bathroom make-overs are often high
on the list of improvements. Think about
improvements that change what is dis-

liked. Maybe outdated wallpaper can be

removed and replaced with paint. Clean
up the grout around a bathtub by redoing
to freshen the room. Go with a new color
scheme achieved by replacing the old linens, bath mat and shower curtain.
Living room re-dos can be achieved
with some accessory changes and perhaps
a new piece of furniture. Change a glass
coffee table for an earthy leather ottoman
that can also store toys or throw pillows.
A simple swap of window treatments can
dramatically change the look of the room.
Kids rooms often can be improved with
some much-needed storage space. Clear
up clutter from the floor by installing a
closet organizing system, which can hang
clothes within reach for children. Older
children may appreciate a room that reflects their maturity. Now is the time to
change princess prints for bolder graphics
or dump trucks for sophistication. All it
often takes is a little paint and some new
bed linens to achieve the look.
Another simple and very inexpensive
way to renovate a home is to reduce. By
removing clutter and items that are simply
collecting dust, homeowners can breathe
new life into spaces. Rearranging furniture is also another option.

Extend The Life Of Your Vehicle

According to data from
TrueCar.com,
in
2012
the average new car cost
$30,500. Thats a considerable expense, especially at
a time when fuel costs remain high and cost of living
continues to rise.
Because new cars have
become so expensive, more
and more vehicle owners
are looking for ways to extend the life of their vehicles. The longer a car can
stay on the road, the better an investment that vehicle becomes. Fortunately,
there are several steps vehicle owners can take that
should ensure their vehicles stay on the road for
years to come.
Scale back on short
trips. The toll cold starts
take on a vehicle can add
up over time. When a car
is started, condensation
builds up in the vehicles
exhaust system. On longer
trips, that condensation
will gradually evaporate.
However, on short trips,
that condensation often
does not have enough time
to evaporate, and over time
too many short trips will
lead to an accumulation of
water in the muffler that
can lead to rust and rust
holes on the muffler. Short
trips also can negatively
affect gas mileage. When
possible, leave your car at
home on trips into town
when you can just as easily
walk or ride a bicycle. Over
time, reducing the amount
of short trips you take in

your car will greatly reduce

wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel
efficiency as well.
Stick to the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule. Adhering
to your vehicles maintenance
schedule
serves
many purposes, including
improving the its durability and protecting various
components, including its
cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicles
oil every 3,000 miles, many
of todays newer automobiles need their oil changed
less frequently. Check your
owners manual for manufacturer recommendations
regarding oil changes, and
dont forget to replace the
oil filter when changing
your vehicles oil.
Pay attention to brake
pads. Brake pads that
are allowed to wear down
can cause damage to the
brakes rotors and calipers.
That damage can prove
costly and make things
harder on your vehicle.
Keep an eye on your vehicles brake pads, which are
far less expensive to replace
than rotors and calipers,
and do not allow them to
wear down to metal.
Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are
under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicles
fuel efficiency. In addition,
the tires life expectancy is
reduced considerably when

CLEAN AND ENJOYABLE ... Keeping a vehicle clean can

make it more enjoyable to drive while encouraging owners
to keep their cars for longer periods of time.
tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your
tire pressure, especially if
you drive a lot, and keep
tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your
vehicles owners manual.
Be mindful when filling
up your tank. Many people
do not pay much attention
to their surroundings when
pulling into the filling station. But when you fill up
can impact your cars life
expectancy. Perhaps the
worst time to fill your tank
is when the fuel tanker is
in the gas station refilling
the underground tanks.
Thats because the process
of filling the underground
tanks can stir up sediment
that had settled at the bottom of those tanks. If that
sediment finds its way into
your vehicles gas tank, it
can clog filters and fuel injectors and negatively affect
the vehicles performance.

So unless your car is running on empty, avoid refilling its gas tank when the
tanker is still in the station.
Take care of your vehicles interior, too. Caring for
a car is not just about being
good to whats under the
hood. Caring for the cars
interior will not necessarily
impact its performance, but
a well-kept interior will improve how you look at your
vehicle and how much you
enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your
vehicle, the longer you are
likely to keep it. Preserve
the vehicles door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats;
and wipe down the vehicles
interior, whether its cloth
or leather. Keeping up the
appearance of the cars interior will make the vehicle
more enjoyable to drive and
increase its value at resale.

Things To Consider Before

Buying An Extended Warranty
Bumper-to-bumper factory warranties can protect motorists should their vehicles experience any problems in
the initial years after the car was purchased. Such warranties typically expire after three years or roughly 36,000
miles, whichever comes first. Once that warranty has expired, vehicle owners must then finance the cost of any
problems that arise on their own.
But many drivers purchase extended warranties to
provide further protection once their bumper-to-bumper
manufacturer warranties have expired. Much like the initial warranty, an extended warranty can help drivers withstand the costs of repairs, and many drivers purchase
such warranties before they even drive their new car off the
lot, as the cost of an extended warranty purchased after
the initial warranty has expired is typically a lot more than
it would have been had it been purchased at the same time
as the vehicle. But while an extended warranty is, in theory, a great idea, such extra protection is not necessarily
for everyone, and there are some things car buyers should
consider before buying an extended warranty.
Length of ownership: If you are a driver who typically
buys a new car every few years or once the odometer hits
the 40,000 mile marker, then an extended warranty likely
is not worth the investment. Unless you plan to put lots of
miles on the car during the three years you intend to own
it, then you wont need the extended warranty because you
are less likely to own it by the time that warranty goes into
effect.
Backer: Who is backing the extended warranty is another factor car buyers must consider before adding the extra protection. A manufacturer-backed extended warranty
is typically your safest bet, as you can take the vehicle into
any of that manufacturers dealerships across the country and have your warranty honored. A third-party warranty may insist the vehicle is taken into the dealership
where you purchased the car, a big negative for anyone
who might be moving while they own the vehicle and an
ever bigger cause for concern if you are not a fan of the
maintenance staff where you purchased the vehicle.
Coverage: All extended warranties are not the same,
and its important that you understand the differences between your options before purchasing a warranty. Carefully read the fine print of each extended warranty offered
to you to be certain you are getting what you want for the
price you want to pay.
Cost: When buying a car, you dont need to buy an
extended warranty from the same person who sold you the
car. Ask the finance manager where you are buying the vehicle to quote you a price on their extended warranty offerings, and then take that price to the dealers competitors.
It can save to shop around.
Personal history: Your personal history also can provide valuable insight into whether or not an extended warranty is right for you. If you are a driver who strictly adheres to manufacturer maintenance schedules and drives
defensively, then you may not need an extended warranty.
But if vehicle maintenance is not high on your priority list
or if you live in a place where traffic is often congested and
your risk of accident is greater, then an extended warranty
is likely a wise investment.

Finding The Right Auto Body Shop Vehicle Winter Prep Checklist
For many vehicle owners, finding the
right auto body shop is nearly as important
as finding the right physician. The average
price of a new automobile continues to rise,
and protecting that investment is of paramount importance to motorists hoping to
extend the lives of their vehicles and maximize their investments.
Get a recommendation. Aside from
his skillset, a trustworthy mechanics best
friend might just be his reputation. Wordof-mouth recommendations from satisfied customers are invaluable assets for
mechanics, and such recommendations
should be equally valued by vehicle owners.
When looking for a new auto body shop,
drivers should ask friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members if they can
recommend any local shops. If anyone offers an especially glowing recommendation,
take it to heart and consider that shop the
next time your vehicle needs work.
Dont be afraid to get estimates. Drivers who tend to agonize the most over
finding a new auto body shop tend to be
those with little history taking vehicles in
for repairs. This group is likely growing
thanks to the escalating costs of new vehicles. Those costs are encouraging drivers
to keep their vehicles longer, which means
drivers are now keeping their vehicles even
after the manufacturer warranty has expired and the dealership where the car had
been serviced will no longer do so under the
warranty agreement. In such instances, it
might be less expensive to take the vehicle
to an auto body shop thats not affiliated
with a dealership. But that can be a frightening prospect for those who have not done
so in the past. To ease those concerns, drivers should obtain several estimates. The
cheapest estimate wont necessarily be the
best fit for you and your vehicle, but multiple estimates should give you an idea of
how much certain repairs should cost and
who may or may not be overcharging you.
Consider the shops location. Recent
transplants to an area who might have relocated for a new job often want to familiarize themselves with their new home base
as much as possible, and this can pay dividends when a vehicle needs repairs. The
lay of the land also should be considered
by those people who have lived in the same
town their whole lives. Auto body shops
located in affluent neighborhoods may
charge their customers more for labor than
shops in middle-income locales. And those
escalated labor costs might not be sinister.
Instead, higher labor costs may be a reflection of the shop having higher operation
costs, such as rent, than its competitors on
the other side of town. So when shopping

FIND SOMEONE YOU CAN TRUST... Part

of protecting your automobile investment
is finding an auto body shop you can trust.
for an affordable auto body shop, motorists
should consider the location of the shop
and how that location might ultimately impact their bottom line.
Ask as many questions as you need
to. Some drivers, especially those who admit to having limited knowledge of cars,
feel as if they must simply accept a mechanics assessment and estimates at face
value. Though a good mechanic wont try
to mislead you, its still good to ask as
many questions as possible before agreeing to let an auto body shop work on your
vehicle. When the mechanic diagnoses the
problem, dont be afraid to ask him to explain the problem, including what might
have caused it. In addition, dont be afraid
to ask about service warranties, and be as
specific as possible, asking what a warranty covers, how long work and/or parts are
covered and if the warranty can be delivered in writing. These questions and their
subsequent answers can provide you some
peace of mind, and a reputable auto body
shop should have no problem answering as
many questions as you can ask them.
Initially, finding a new auto body shop
can seem like a daunting task. But seeking
the help of others and taking some additional steps can make the process go more
smoothly and increase your chances of
finding a mechanic you can trust.

Dont Miss Out On These Auto Insurance Discounts

There is seemingly no end in sight
with regard to the rising costs of owning
an automobile. From the cost of the car
or truck itself to the high prices of fuel,
drivers increasingly are on the hunt for
ways to curtail the costs of owning an automobile. One way to save some cash is
to take advantage of auto insurance discounts you may be eligible for.
Auto insurance company fulfillment is
at record high. However, many discounts
may still be available, even if drivers or
their agents may overlook them. Fierce
competition among insurance providers
continually adds to the bevy of new discounts many are willing to offer to woo
new customers.
Daytime running lights: Four out of
the 10 largest auto insurance companies
now offer discounts if your vehicle has
daytime running lights.
Low mileage: Dont take the car out
often? Such habits may earn you a reward.
Grades: Check with your insurance
company if you have a student on the
policy. His or her good grades may qualify
you for a discount.
Occupation: Your occupation also

may entitle you to a discount on insurance. Insurance companies believe that

people in certain occupations or those
who spend a lot of time on the road may
be less likely to take risks. Find out if
your occupation qualifies.
Alumni associations and clubs: Certain organizations have teamed with insurance providers to offer discounts to
members. Therefore, if you are in a fraternal group, a credit union, an alumni
association, or some other organization,
you may eligible for certain discounts.
Multiple policies: Many insurance
companies will offer a discount if you
group your policies together into a bundle.
Insurance companies have many
other discounts available if you ask. For
example, if your vehicle has an antitheft
system or environmentally friendly components, you may be eligible for a discount. Customer loyalty, paperless billing, paying all your bill at once, being a
current or former member of the military
or if your vehicle is a new model year also
may make you eligible for discounts that
can drastically reduce the cost of your
policy.

Fall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles and even our psyches for the arrival of
winter. To get your car cold-weather ready,
check and repair these items now.
Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires are under inflated, you lose
fuel efficiency, so monitor and maintain
tire pressure throughout the winter.
Those who live in particularly cold
climates should switch from all-season
to winter tires. Much as you wear winter
boots to provide more traction and protection than sneakers, so should you equip
your vehicle with tires that will stand up to
winter terrain.
Check on the status of your battery
and its starting power. Cold weather can
put more strain on a car battery. A battery that is already weak may not turn over
when you need it most.
Replace worn wiper blades and upgrade to a windshield fluid that is rated for
subzero temperatures. Each of these items
will improve visibility when winter precipitation is making its presence felt.
Schedule an oil change at the begin-

ning of winter. Dirty oil can hinder coldweather starts and, if coupled with low
coolant levels, can make it difficult for the
engine to turn over.
Keep jumper cables, a battery booster
pack and warning cones in your vehicle.
These can come to the rescue if your battery dies and you are stranded on the side
of the road.
While you are stocking the trunk or
cargo bed, include a shovel, sand or cat litter, a flashlight, an ice scraper, water, and
a blanket. These are good emergency items
to have in the event your car breaks down
in the winter. You can dig your tires out
of a snow drift with the shovel and apply
litter to increase traction. The blanket will
come in handy if you have to sit in a cold
car for a while awaiting roadside service.
Consider taking a winter driving
course. Icy, snowy conditions completely
change the defensive tactics needed to
navigate the roads. A prepared driver is
one who is more likely to avoid accidents
and make it home safely.

Must-Have Items For Automotive Emergencies

BE PREPARED... Certain items should be kept in the car for emergency situations.
Few drivers want to think about their
vehicles breaking down. But cars are not
foolproof, and even the most well-maintained vehicle can be sidelined by a flat
tire or a dead battery. In certain times of
the year, a breakdown may be an inconvenience that takes up a few hours of a persons time. In extreme weather situations,
a broken down car could be dangerous.
Preparing for emergency situations can
help drivers get moving faster.
There are certain items that should be
kept in the trunk or cargo area regardless
of the season, and some of these items
should be modified as the seasons change.
First aid kit: If someone is hurt in an
accident, medical supplies in the trunk allow drivers and/or passengers to treat injured persons until paramedics can arrive.
Go over what is in the kit and learn how to
use each item correctly.
Flares: If your car breaks down at
night or in situations where visibility is
poor, flares can keep other drivers away
from your vehicle when it is parked on the
side of the road. Flares also will illuminate
the area so that you can work on fixing a
problem or alert emergency personnel as
to where you are located.
Jumper cables: Jumper cables enable
you to recharge a dead battery, a common
problem in cold weather. Automotive retailers also sell portable car battery chargers that can provide the boost needed to
the battery in the event you cannot find
another car around to offer assistance.
Spare tire and tools: Tire blowouts
or holes in tires are unpredictable. Having
the necessary items at the ready can get
you back on the road faster. Learn how to
change a tire. In a pinch, tire sealant can
be used to get you to the next service sta-

tion and away from the side of the road.

Flashlight and batteries: A flashlight
makes it possible for drivers to see under
their vehicles and under the hood more effectively. It also can be used to grab the
attention of fellow motorists who might be
able to help. Keep extra batteries for the
flashlight on hand as well.
Blankets: A blanket can keep passengers warm if a car breaks down in chilly
weather. Blankets also can be placed on
the ground so that you can lay on the road
and be cushioned from debris when looking under the car.
Extra clothing: An extra set of clothing
can be handy should your clothing become
soggy or soiled.
Nonperishable foods: A few snacks
and bottles of water stashed in the car can
help quell hunger while waiting for a tow
truck.
Sand and kitty litter: Sand can weigh
down the back of a rear-wheel drive vehicle to provide better traction on slippery
roads. Sand and kitty litter also can be
sprinkled underneath tires to help them
grip the road better when you are trying to
get the car out of an icy or muddy patch.
Charged mobile phone: Keep your
cell phone charged so that you can make
emergency phone calls or contact a tow
company in the event of a breakdown.
Shovel: A shovel makes it easier to dig
a vehicle out of mud or snow.
Certain things should not be stored in
a vehicle. For example, hot weather can
cause lighters and cans to burst inside of
a car, so such items should not be kept
in your car. In addition, freezing temperatures may reduce the effectiveness of certain products and cause liquids to freeze
and burst.

Preventive Maintenance To Keep Your Car On The Road Improving Driver Focus
Many motorists bemoan
the myriad costs associated with owning a vehicle.
According to the National
Automobile Dealers Association, the average price
for a new car in the United States is slightly more
than $28,000. But as any
vehicle owner knows, that
sticker price is only the beginning. The cost of maintaining a vehicle and keeping it on the road is not
exactly insignificant.
Motorists have resolved
to keep their vehicles on
the road longer in an effort
to stretch their automobile dollars. Thats a sound
resolution, and one that is
not necessarily difficult to
accomplish.
Air Filter - If the filter
is filthy, simply replace
it. Auto parts stores sell
air filters, and most drivers shouldnt have trouble
replacing a filter by themselves.
Belts and Hoses - Issues with belts or hoses
are often recognizable to

the naked eye, regardless

of a drivers automotive
skill. A hose in poor condition can appear bulging
or brittle, and should not
feel too soft or too hard. If a
hose exhibits any of these
symptoms, replace it. A
belt thats worn or frayed
should also be replaced.
Brake Fluid - One of the
more expensive repair jobs
on a vehicle is to replace
the brakes. Drivers should
routinely check the vehicles brake fluid. Without
sufficient brake fluid, the
brakes lifespan decreases
dramatically. Checking the
brake fluid is easy; simply
look in the owners manual
to find brake fluid reservoir
and remove the lid (some
vehicles might require the
lid be unscrewed). The
reservoir will likely have
instructions on the inside
advising how much brake
fluid should be added. If
the fluid is below the line of
demarcation, add fluid up
to that line. But be careful not to overfill. Check

the brake fluid levels on a

monthly basis.
Motor Oil - Oil change
guidelines have changed
dramatically thanks to better cars and more reliable
motor oils. But it still helps
to check motor oil levels
after every fill up. If motor
oil levels are low, add more
oil. If oil is significantly low
after each fill up, consult a
mechanic just to be safe.
Exhaust - Once a year,
be it at a routine tune up
or should repair work be
necessary, ask your mechanic to check the vehicles emissions. Failing
an emissions test might be
indicative of a larger problem.
In addition, inspect the
muffler and exhaust pipe
for holes, particularly after
winter, when debris from
snow trucks may do significant damage. Replace any
damaged or rusted parts.
Power Steering - Power
steering fluid should also
be inspected on a monthly basis. When checking

power steering fluid, also

inspect the pump for any
leaks.
Tires - Keeping tires
properly inflated pays numerous dividends. Properly inflated tires make it
easier for the engine to operate, lowering fuel costs
while also decreasing wear
and tear on the engine.
Maintaining tires also
involves checking for wear
and tear. Uneven wear
could indicate the tires are
misaligned. Discuss this
with your mechanic.
Transmission Fluid When checking transmission fluid, do so while the
car is running and after
the engine has warmed
up. If the vehicle needs
transmission fluid, add the
recommended fluid but be
careful not to overfill.
Prolonging a vehicles
lifespan is not as difficult
as it sounds. Oftentimes,
all it takes is minor, yet
routine, maintenance to
keep a car on the road for
years and years.

Prepare To Return Your Leased Vehicle

Leasing an automobile is a great
option for many people. Leasing allows motorists to drive a new car every few years if not more frequently,
and the lower monthly payments associated with leases make it possible
for drivers who otherwise may not be
able to afford a new car to drive the
vehicle of their choosing.
But unlike buying a new or used
car, leasing requires drivers to return
their cars at the end of their lease.
That process often goes smoothly,
but it goes even more smoothly for
those motorists who know what to
expect when the time comes to return their vehicles. The following tips
can help lessees better navigate the
process of returning a leased vehicle.
Expect an inspection. A lease
inspection is standard with many
lease agreements, but lessees may
not know that this inspection can
occur as early as 90 days before
the end of the lease agreement. The
leasing company will contact lessees to schedule an inspection, but
such a call can catch some lessees
off guard if theyre not prepared to
receive it. The lessee does not have
to pay for the inspection, which is
conducted to determine if there are
any mechanical problems, cosmetic
damage to the vehicles exterior and
interior, cracks and/or pitting in the
windshield, or excessive wear on the
tires. Once the inspection has been

completed, lessees will receive a report assessing any damage found by

the inspector and the cost associated with addressing the damage. This
report may be handed over immediately or in the days following the
inspection.
Conduct your own inspection
first. The best way to prepare for the
lease inspection is to beat the inspector to the punch and inspect the
vehicle first. Some auto manufacturers provide sample inspection reports to lessees so the drivers know
what to look for in advance. If your
vehicle manufacturer does not, find
a sample report online and use that
as your guide.
When conducing your inspection,
pay particular attention to any dents,
dings or scratches on the vehicles
exterior as well as any tears or stains
on the vehicles interior. A thorough
detailing may be enough to address
some scratches, while others may
need a more creative solution, such
as some new paint. Speak to an auto
detailer if you think the scratches are
significant enough that your lease
inspector will charge you for them.
In addition, remove personal items
from your vehicles interior and clean
and detail the interior if necessary.
Handling issues on your own is typically less expensive than letting the
manufacturer address any problems
found during the inspection.

Request a second inspection.

Many leasing companies schedule
the first inspection so far in advance
of the turn-in date so lessees can address any issues on their own and
save money in so doing. Such companies will typically then schedule
a second lease inspection upon request, so dont be afraid to schedule
a second inspection after you have
addressed issues found during the
initial examination. Inspectors will
check to verify all issues have been
properly addressed, and you may
even receive a second inspection report if some problems were not satisfactorily addressed.
Return everything. Many lessees are caught off guard when they
are charged for items they received
when they initially signed the lease
but have long since lost or forgotten. Whether its that second set of
keys you have never used or those
annoying manufacturer floor mats
that came with the vehicle when you
drove off the lot, you need to return
everything that came with the car.
Failure to return items can incur
penalties, some of which may be significant.
Returning a leased vehicle is not
as simple as returning a rental car.
Lessees must take steps to ensure
they are not subject to potentially
costly penalties when they return
their leased vehicles.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD... Maintaining focus on

the road can reduce the risk of being in an accident.
Driver distractions have grown over the previous decade. In addition to cell phones, in-vehicle entertainment
systems have grown more popular. The threat posed by
drivers using their cell phones while behind the wheel
has been widely documented, but drivers also can lose
focus on the road when music is blaring or passengers
are watching DVDs in their vehicles. Lack of focus can
even occur when drivers are alone in their vehicles and
their minds begin to wander. The following are a handful
of ways drivers can maintain their focus on the road and
reduce their risk of being in an accident.
Take different routes. Familiarity with certain roadways, such as the route you might drive to the office, can
lead to a lack of focus. While its good to be familiar with
roads to reduce surprises, taking the same route every
day can make it easy for your mind to wander. Losing
focus or taking your eyes off the road, even if for just a
moment, can cause an accident. If possible, spice up your
daily driving routine by taking different routes every so
often.
Leave on time. Its easy to lose focus on the road
if youre running late and hurrying to get somewhere on
time. When you hurry, your focus is largely on getting
to your destination on time and not on getting to your
destination safely. Giving yourself enough time to arrive
at your destination on time can make you a more alert
driver. If you are running late, call ahead to your destination before leaving and let them know you will be a few
minutes late. Doing so will calm you down and make you
a better driver.
Switch cars. Much like familiarity with a certain
route can lull you into a false sense of security, so can
a familiarity with your vehicle. Driving the same vehicle
every day has its advantages, but its easy to become distracted in an automobile you spend hours driving each
week. Switch cars with your spouse once or a twice a
week if possible. You might find driving another vehicle
every so often is fun, and a new vehicle might break up
the monotony of a daily commute while increasing your
alertness.
Ban smartphones in your vehicle. Smartphones are
technological marvels that have quickly changed the way
we live our lives. But smartphone use behind the wheel is
both dangerous and illegal. Even hands-free devices that
allow drivers to keep both hands on the wheel can take
drivers attention away from the roads if theyre busy having a discussion on the phone. If your goal is to improve
your focus on the road, turn your smartphone off when
behind the wheel.
Encourage backseat passengers to wear headphones
when using in-vehicle entertainment systems. If passengers want to make use of your in-vehicle entertainment
system, such as a DVD player, then make sure they wear
headphones while doing so. This allows you to hear the
sounds of the road without being distracted by a loud
movie entertaining passengers in the backseat. Frontseat passengers should refrain from watching movies or
playing games on their tablets, as such devices can draw
drivers attention away from the road.

Advice From The Pros: Do Not Neglect Auto Service

Putting off routine auto maintenance or ignoring service intervals
is false economy. Small issues can
morph into more expensive repairs.
For example, failure to replace worn
brake pads or a faulty oxygen sensor -- both relatively easy services for
qualified auto technicians -- can result in expensive brake rotor service
or costly replacement of the vehicles
catalytic converter.
Frequently neglected items include
oil changes, tire and brake service,
wheel alignment, air and fuel filters,
and transmission service, according
to ASE-certified auto technicians.
Besides, a well-maintained vehicle
gets better gasoline mileage, pollutes
less, is safer to operate, and lasts longer than one thats neglected, notes
ASE.
To help consumers choose a repair
shop that fits their needs, ASE offers
the following checklist:
Look for a neat, well-organized
facility, with vehicles in the parking
lot equal in value to your own and
modern equipment in the service
bays.
Look for a courteous staff, with
a service consultant willing to answer
all of your questions.
Look for policies regarding estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees,
guarantees, and acceptable methods
of payment.
Ask if the repair facility special-

properly ensured.
izes or if it usually handles your type
of repair work.
Look for signs of professionalism
in the customer service area, such as
civic, community, or customer service
awards.
Look for evidence of qualified
technicians: trade school diplomas,
certificates of advanced course work,
and certification by ASE.
Look for the ASE sign or logo; it
means the shop employs nationally
certified technicians.
The National Institute for Auto-

motive Service Excellence (ASE) was

founded in 1972 as a non-profit, independent organization dedicated to
improving the quality of automotive
service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians.
ASE-certified technicians wear
blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their
exact areas of certification. Their employers often display the blue and
white ASE sign. Visit www.ase.com

Different Types Of Tires Make A Difference

Drivers rarely think of the tires on their vehicles until
they have a flat. But the type of tires on your vehicle can
impact its performance. When choosing tires for their vehicles, drivers should consider a host of factors, including
the terrain and driving conditions vehicles are likely to
encounter.
Understanding tires and what makes some a better fit
than others for certain vehicles can make for safe driving
and improved handling.
ALL-SEASON TIRES
The most common type of tire and arguably the best
known is the standard all-season tire. Many vehicles
come equipped with these tires, which are designed to be
versatile enough to grip the road in various conditions.
They are commonly made of a harder rubber that will not
wear out quickly and will retain their tread. Most day-today driving can be done on all-season tires.
HIGH-PERFORMANCE TIRES
People who live in dry climates or drive sports and racing cars can benefit from high-performance tires. These
tires are specifically designed to grip the road better and
offer superior handling under higher speeds. Because
high-performance tires are made of a softer rubber compared to standard tires, they will not last as long as allseason tires.
SNOW TIRES
People who live in snowy, icy conditions will benefit
from the use of snow tires. These tires are designed with

special treads to offer more traction in slippery conditions.

The rubber used to manufacture the tire can remain flexible even at extremely low temperatures. Winter tires are
best reserved for extreme weather and not used all season
long because they will wear out more quickly than others. They may not have the same level of traction on clear
roads. In some cases, winter tires may have metal studs
included to enhance traction in icy situations. People who
do not want to switch tires when cold weather arrives
sometimes invest in snow chains that improve traction on
standard tires.
MUD TIRES
Muddy areas can be just as slippery as snowy conditions. Mud tires are designed similarly to snow tires but
will have extra grooves and a tread pattern that facilitates
movement of mud away from the tires and road. Mud tires
may be wider than standard tires as well.
TRUCK TIRES
Drivers of trucks or sport-utility vehicles often need
special truck tires. These tires can better handle the
weight and size of a larger vehicle. Many drivers stick with
the type of tire that originally came with their truck. Drivers who like to go off-roading may need an all-terrain tire
to offer more traction when climbing hills or traversing
different conditions.
It can be easy to overlook the importance of tires, but
tires help vehicles remain on the road and can affect mileage, maneuverability and safety.

When Is Seat Belt Replacement Necessary?

Seat belts and air bags are safety
devices that serve to limit or prevent
injury in the event of an automobile
accident. Drivers and passengers
tend to take these devices for granted,
but these safety measures can greatly reduce a persons risk of injury or
even death.
Although seat belts do not degrade as quickly as parts of a vehicle
that need frequent servicing, there
are some instances when seat belts
should be replaced.
Seat belts, like car seats and air
bags, are considered by the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration to be single-use items. Seat belts
are designed to work just once - protecting and immobilizing a passenger
in the event of a crash.

Diagnosing A Leaky Car

Seat belts have a pretensioner,

which reels back slack on the seat
belt.
Pretensioners
preemptively
tighten the belt to prevent the occupant from jerking forward in a crash.
They can be activated in a bad crash
or any crash severe enough to deploy
an air bag.
Seat belts also are equipped with
locking retractors, which afford the
seated occupant some movement
while still providing a means to limit
movement in the event of a crash.
Both of these safety belt components may effectively work only once.
After an accident, the ability of pretensioners and retractors may be
compromised. The fabric seat belt
itself also may have been marginally
stretched out in the crash.

Its advisable to replace any seat

belts that were in use during a crash
to ensure the belts will offer the same
measure of protection should a collision occur in the future.
Seat belts that are frayed or do
not operate properly also should be
replaced. Some safety experts advise
having seat belts inspected and possibly replaced after 10 to 15 years of
use. One can never tell how older seat
belts will stand up in the event of an
accident. If the seat belts have a builtin indicator, verify that they have not
been stretched during regular wear to
warrant replacement.
Seat belts can protect passengers
only if they are in good working form.
They likely need replacement after a
collision.

LOOK FOR LEAKS ... After taking a vehicle through the

car wash, drivers may notice a leak inside the car.
Very often drivers find that the seats or the mats below
their feet are damp or downright sopping wet. But unless
a window or sunroof was left open during a rainstorm,
drivers may find it difficult to decipher why their vehicles
are suddenly soaked.
Unfortunately, when a vehicles interior is wet, that
could be a sign of a significant problem, one that can
gradually worsen over time. Wetness can cause electrical
components or metal structures in the car to rot, and a
soggy interior may eventually be overcome by mold. It is
best to find out what is causing the leak as soon as possible and have the problem fixed just as quickly.
Finding the source of a leak is not always easy. Sometimes drivers can locate it themselves and then fix the
problem on their own, while more serious problems might
need to be handled by a professional. But it is best to assess the situation before booking an appointment with
your mechanic.
Cars can spring a leak for a variety of reasons. Leaks
from systems under the hood, as well as rainwater or water from washing the car, can infiltrate the interior if seals
around doors and/or windows are broken or gaskets are
worn out. Figuring out which type of liquid is entering
your vehicle can help you determine whats behind the
leak.
A clear, slippery liquid under the seats may be indicative of a leak in the brake fluid reservoir. Brake fluid is
a liquid used in the braking system to apply hydraulic
pressure from the master cylinder to the calipers to the
pads against the wheel drums. If you discover brake fluid,
check the master cylinder or the clutch master cylinder to
see if there is a leak or spillover of the fluid.
Coolant also can leak under the dashboard and into
the foot wells of a car. Coolant is a sticky, green and
sweet-smelling fluid, and a coolant leak could mean that
a heater core or hose in the cooling system is leaking. In
such instances, hoses may need to be replaced.
Some vehicles have water diverters on the sides of
their windshields to make sure water flows off of the windshield when the wipers are in use. Also, the trough where
the wipers rest should have a sealant that prevents water
from entering at the base of the windshield. Over time,
both can wear out and may need to be replaced and resealed. Try sitting in the car on a dry day and spraying a
hose on the windshield. See if any water eventually makes
it inside of the car. If it does, the windshield is likely the
reason your vehicles interior is getting wet.
A clogged drain in a vehicles heating, ventilation and
air conditioning system is one of the more common causes
of interior water damage. If the drain is clogged, condensation from the system cannot drain from the tube. In
such instances, water backs up into the system and can
actually blow out of the car vents or elsewhere in the vehicle, forming a pool on the floor of the car. Leaves or
debris can cause a blockage. If excess water is left in the
HVAC system, it can damage the blower motor. Also, a
faulty seal that is located between the HVAC case and the
firewall of the vehicle may cause water to leak into the
passenger compartment under the carpet.
In some cases, cleaning blocked drains in a vehicles
HVAC system may be as simple as blowing compressed
air through the vents or using a wire to clear out leaves or
dirt. Other times it may be hard to access the leaks, and
such instances are often best left to a mechanic.
The causes of leaks in a car are not always so easy to
diagnose. But it is important to figure out where the water
is coming from early on to minimize the damage water can
do to your vehicle.
