WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN!
We The People.. are the backbone, skeleton, flesh and blood of this
great country. Our government is simply a tool that allows us to achieve
our goals in a civilized and organized manner.
September 11, 2001 proved to us and the world that when the chips are
down it is individuals who make a difference. To us, hero is a term
more appropriately attributed to the actions of Todd Beamer, Thomas E
Burnett, Jr, Jeremy Glick and Mark Bingham, the people who took it
upon themselves to take down United Flight #93, fully aware of the con-
sequences. But, they did it, and in so doing, saved countless lives. Indi-
viduals like these men are the ones who have built this country and made
it great. They didnt wait for any directive from a government agency.
They didnt beg for help or anguish over what they knew they had to do.
They simply did it, and in doing so the terrorists were denied.
So, never forget!
It is during times like these that many of us feel that our contributions are inadequate or not important. But, every effort we make on our own behalf or on behalf
of others solidifies the foundation upon which our system of government sits. It is not the politicians, nor the media pundits, nor the bureaucracies that make this
country great. No.. its we, the people. Celebrate our freedoms, and be vigilant so that we dont lose them.
CELEBRATE FREEDOM!

CELEBRATE FREEDOM!
Take a Day to Remember and Serve
As the 13th anniversary of September 11 approaches, our thoughts are once again with
all those who lost loved ones on that tragic morning. Remember the names, faces, and
lives of the men, women, and children who were killed, and look for ways to ensure that
each and every one of them is not forgotten. We invite you to join us in remembering
September 11 and all that this day means.
There are numerous ways to participate in the annual commemoration and one of the
most powerful is performing acts of service in your communities in remembrance of the
victims of 9/11. When you choose to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11, you are
playing an important part in memorializing those who were killed, honoring the sacrifices
of the first responders, and remembering the spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath
of 9/11.
However you choose to commemorate this anniversary, thank you for joining us as
we take a day to remember and honor.
Please take a moment and go online to: www.911memorial.org for more information.
All donations and sponsorships to the 9/11 Memorial are dedicated to developing and
sustaining the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

6TH ANNUAL AUTUMN GATHERING OF THE CLANS WILL BE HELD SUN-
DAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST
in East Poultney John L. (Jack) Wilson, Historical Researcher / Writer Will be Guest
Speaker, By Janice B. Edwards. The Annual Autumn Gathering of the Clans event of Poultney
Area St. Davids Society, a 26th anniversary year Gathering of the Clans event, will be
held on Sunday, September 21st. Sponsored by Poultney Area St. Davids Society, the
gathering will be held at 2:00 p.m. that Sunday in the main floor fellowship hall of his-
toric United Baptist Church, On the Green, East Poultney, Vermont (home church of the
late famous George Jones, New York Times newspaper). The public is cordially invited
to join with the St. Davids Society. Dessert Social (Te Bach) will be held following the
program. Please bring a dessert to share. Coffee / Tea will be provided. The program will
feature guest speaker, Mr. John L. (Jack) Wilson of Harvard, Massachusetts, an historical
researcher / writer who is working on a book regarding several World War II members of
A Company, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division who were killed by a Ger-
man tank fired point-blank on their position in the town of Kommerscheidt in November
1944. A German explosive ordnance disposal team working in 2008 at a construction
site in the town found fragments of a World War II-era U.S. military boot. The remains
were eventually turned over to the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command for further
analysis and in 2010 were returned to the United States. Jacks uncle, John J. Farrell, Jr.,
was one of those fallen soldiers. Jack has been actively working to find and meet the
families of the soldiers and helping them to bring closure to their lives. It is the life of
another of these soldiers killed, Sgt. Edward T. Jones, Jr. who was from Spruce Gum,
West Pawlet, Vermont, which brings Jack to the Vermont / New York Slate Valley region.
Sgt. Jones remains were buried with full military honors in September 2010 in Our Lady
of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Granville, New York. While here, Jack hopes to meet
people who can share with him their memories or stories of Edward T. Jones life in the
Slate Valley with his friends, his sister Mary and their parents Edward T. & Mary (Whalen)
Jones, both in the West Pawlet community and in its schools as well as in Granville High
School where he was schooled. John L. (Jack) Wilson grew up in New England and has
lived in Americas Midwest and Far West during his professional career. He has worked
for major multinational corporations leading international business development. He has
spent years working in Germany and throughout Europe as well as Japan, China, and South-
east Asia.
He lives today in Harvard, Massachusetts with his wife and family. The public is cordially
invited to join with the St. Davids Society in welcoming Jack Wilson to this Valley and to
learn more from him about his research and forth-coming book. There is no monetary
charge to attend this event. Free Will donations for historic United Baptist Church, East

From Susans Corner
by Susan J. Coons
back to school
Ill never forget the first day of school for my first-born. I thought
about every frightening scenario that could possibly happen. There
could be an earthquake. A stranger might kidnap her. Just who is this
teacher/person and what kind of ideas will she be filling up my little
girls head? What if there is a fire at school?
I arrived early to pick her up. I was eager to hear all about her very
first day of school. She came running to the car and excitedly told me about the kids,
her teacher and what a wonderful time she had. She absolutely loved it! All of it!
By Wednesday morning I was much more confident in the school, myself and my
daughter. I knew we could handle it. That afternoon, when the classes had been dismissed
and Catherine was not among the large wave of students leaving their classes, I didnt
immediately worry. She was probably looking for her sweater or something. After a
couple of minutes I began to PANIC! Where is she? I waited for about five minutes
which seemed like 30 minutes to me. I got out of the car when I saw her teacher and
asked her where Catherine was. She told me Catherine was with the daycare kids whose
parents came later to pick them up. What?
Seems that my daughter had so much fun the first day of school she decided to extend
her school days. Just didnt tell anyone.
Im still sending her off to school. Shes a teacher now. When she stays overnight
(once a week because she lives in Albany and this gives her a break on the long commute)
I pack her lunch, kiss her good-bye and tell her to have a nice day.
P.S.: I worry about her in the classroom more today than I did when she was a little kid.
Our society today is riddled with a gun-toting mentality and violence which is
romanticized and validated on television and through video games.
Reflections: Adventures in Potty-training
Written by Rachel Essaff Maher
My life revolves around the toilet. Not just any toilet, mind you. A
red and blue Thomas & Friends potty chair that is seated strategi-
cally across from the regular porcelain throne. Because my three-
year old is currently trying to kick his diaper habit, I spend a good
deal of my day being either his coach or his cheerleader. You have
to go? Lets go! Move! Move! Move! and Whoo hoo! Way to pee! have become
my household mantras.
As this is my third time potty-training a child, I feel sometimes over-confident in my
ability to get the job done. There are moments when I am handing him his fifth Jake
and the Neverland Pirates sticker of the day and thinking about how completely easy
this whole thing is, now that I have done it three times in only four years. On those
days, I pat myself on the back and walk around feeling like I have just won the elusive
Mother-of-the-Year Award.
However, there are also moments when I find myself staring at my reflection in the
bathroom mirror, giving myself a rousing pep talk in the midst of bleaching the
bathroom floor or scrubbing the hallway carpet. And there are other moments when I
am clutching my son like a football, racing through Wal-Mart like a madwoman
because the kid always has to go to the bathroom when he is located at the opposite
end of the store. I have abandoned my fair share of shopping carts, have fled numer-
ous checkout lines, and have nearly forgotten my other two children, all in the name
of those panic-fueled pursuits of potty-training perfection.
But I really cannot complain. This third time around has gone much smoother than
the last two. And anything that gets us past the horribly expensive diaper stage of life
is worth its weight in gold. In fact, my husband and I often pretreat the laundry, our
heads together over a bottle of Shout while we daydream (with dollar signs flashing
in our eyes) of the day when we can toss out the Diaper Genie and burn the diaper
bag. Imagine the freedom well have! and Imagine all the money well be saving!
are just some of the whispered fantasies we share in the laundry room, spritzing away
at Spider-man undies and smiling at one another. It may not be very romantic, but I
have heard that the couple who dreams together, stays together.
At night, as I wrestle my son into his diaper before bed, I remind myself that we are
getting closer to that magical day when the last of our children is finally out of
diapers. I know it: even when it feels like we have been doling out stickers for an
eternity; even when it feels like I just cant sprint across Hannaford fast enough to
get him to the restroom (where he will inevitably sit for twenty minutes before
deciding that he did not really have to go); and even when I am hiding out in the
pantry, desperately devouring my secret stash of Dove dark chocolate because I feel
like I am going to lose my mind if I have to scrub the playroom carpet one more
time. I know it.
After all, I have been in potty-training mode for four years now, off and on. I am
practically a professional. Why, thats long enough to start listing it on my resume.

Have you given any thought to milking camels? Camel milk is hitting the mainstream courtesy of
Americas drome-dairies.
Were all used to cows milk alternatives, including goat, sheep and even legume and nut milks like
soy and almond. Another milk alternative is gaining traction with curious American consumers:
camel milk. Technically, camel milk isnt new. Milking and riding camels is extremely common
elsewhere, particularly in native camel habitats. There are two main types of camels, the dromedary
or Arabian camel, the one-hump camel found in Africa, the Middle East, and Australia; and the
Bactrian, the two-hump camel found in
Central Asia. Milking either type, the result
is the same. Camel milk has 2 percent milk
fat, a creamy white color and a sweet,
slightly salty aftertaste. There are only seven
camel milking facilities in the U.S.
Regulation on camel milk varies widely, with
most camel milk drinkers still buying from
small farmers or within membership
associations.
In June, a camel milk dairy and distributor,
Desert Farms in California, started selling
camel milk in California Whole Foods stores
for $18 a pint.
Michigan farmer Marlin Troyer says The camel is the one of the most misunderstood and
underestimated animals in the U.S Camels milk is definitely a benefit to anybodys diet.
Camel milk advocates reference studies demonstrating that the anti-inflammatory beverage will
soothe symptoms of Crohns disease, IBS and diabetes thanks to its low sugar content and high
levels of protein and vitamin C. Some have even suggested camel milk can improve autism-related
symptoms (though the science remains up in the air on that claim).
In many ways, its strange that its been hard to get camel farming over the hump in terms of
mainstream acceptance. Despite their unshakably bad rap for kicking and spitting, camels are
extremely sensitive, intelligent creatures.
Camels dont have natural predators, and accordingly, theyre more curious than combative. They
also dont have teeth on their upper mandible, just a jagged underbite and a few molars. A camels
loose, split top lip seems like an extension of its big, curious nose.
Even with a gentle disposition, milking a camel is no small task. Unlike cows, which can be separated
from calves immediately after birth and keep producing milk, camels must be encouraged by their
babies to let down their milk. When a calf nuzzles its mothers udder, the release of oxytocin in
the mothers brain triggers muscle contractions, which causes the milk to drop. The calfs tail will
go up in anticipation, and all four of the mothers teats will fill up like water balloons. The muscle
contractions also cause a camel to suddenly become very still and blink hard several times, sometimes
even shedding a tear or two. (If youve seen the 2003 German documentary, The Story of the
Weeping Camel, you know how true this is.) Its one of the only ways to tell when its possible to
milk. You must be quick. The milk is available for just 90 seconds at a time. Theres no limit to the
amount the mother will produce, so as long as the baby can prime the mother, milking can continue.
Raising a herd can take considerable time. Mother camels gestate their 75 lb. calves for 13 months.
All that waiting, and when its finally time, the birth tends to take just 20 minutes. Typically, camels
live 35 to 40 years old. Despite difficulty procuring the milk (and some sidelong glances from fellow
farmers), the milks benefits and a growing population seeking another alternative to traditional cow
milk means camel milk may finally make it over the hump in the United States.

CEMETERY TOUR- Come and learn more about the history of
Glens Falls and Queensbury, and the people who came before us.
The Annual Cemetery Tour at Glens Falls Bay Street Cemetery will
be held on Saturday, September 27. This is a joint project of the
Chapman Historical Museum and the Glens Falls Community The-
ater. As people walk through the cemetery at scheduled times, com-
munity theater players stand at gravesites and bring to life the stories
of eight of our community ancestors. This event sold out last year, so
we strongly recommend advance reservations. Walking tours are
scheduled for 10am, 10:30am, 11am, 12 noon, 12:30pm, and 1:00pm.
If youd rather ride than walk, we have two golf cart tours at 10:00am
and Noon. New this year, we will have 6 and 8 passenger golf carts.
The cost is $10/person, $8/students, and a 10% discount for mem-
bers. Call 793-2826 for information or reservations, or e-mail
educator@chapmanmuseum.org.
