CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION

Perhaps the most asked but least answered question in business today is
what can we do to make our business survive and grow? the world is rapidly
changing into something too hard to easily predict, with a hundred opportunities
and pitfalls passing by every moment. To add to this confusion, there are
hundreds, if not thousands of techniques, solutions and a method that claims to
help business improve productivity, quality and customers satisfaction. A
company president, CEO or business owner had so many choices in these
buzzwords, whether they should be called total Quality Management, Customer
satisfaction, re-engineering or team building.. They are like new shoppers in a
giant grocery store: they are hungry, but there are so many brands, sizes and
varieties you dont know what to buy. In response to this confusion, many do
nothing, often afraid of making the wrong choices and planning.
The modern business in the present stages of the world needs to look at
certain variable for purposeful and effective administration and the general
management of such large business organization. For the business organization

its method of attaining them. Planning provides also a strongly implies
management innovation. Planning bridges the gap from where we are to where
we want to go. It makes it possible for things to occur which could not otherwise
happens. Planning can be used to predict the exact future and factors beyond
our central may interfere with the best laid down plans, unless we plan, we are
leaving events to chances. Planning is an intellectual demanding process: it
requires that we consciously determine knowledge and considered estimates.
A manager must plan in order to know what kind of organization
relationship and qualifications are needed, along which course of subordinates
are needed, along which course of subordinate are to be and what kind of control
is to be applied. And all the managerial functions must be planned, if they are to

In Nigeria, managers of today are facing a lot of problems on planning,
which include the following. Managers prefer to act on immediate problem
because they provide instant feedback. For example, if a customer places an
order, the manager would prefer to provide the service in order to satisfy the
4

customer and get his appreciation. Planning deals with future events and its
reward are deferred. Most manager prefer reward now rather than later.
Planning often involve serious thinking and extensive paper work. I.e. most
managers do not like activities that will spend 20-25 percent of their time thinking
and make them to be indoors. Planning takes time. It is best done when few
interruptions are likely to occur. Effective managers find hid-outs and private
moments in which to do their. The managers become fire Fighters pending their
time attending to emergency instead of preventing them. Plans can be used to
measure results. Some time managers do not want anyone else to know that
their plans were poorly devised for could be accomplished.
