Chapter 3

Research Methodology

Introduction
In this chapter, the research methods, tools and instruments used in
gather relevant data are discussed and explained. The contents include details on the
methods, tools, instruments, research environment, respondents, sampling design and
parameters of the research problem. The data and information gathered will serve as
the basis of the researchers in the development of architectural solutions of the
redevelopment of the Bulawis Community Swimming Pool into a Recreation and
Wellness Tourist Resort.
Research Environment
The research environment covered the whole lot area of Bulawis Community
Swimming Pool where a trademark of beauty gives a whole new experience.
Bulawis Community Swimming Pool located at Bunawan, Calamba, Misamis
Occidental, just 4.8 kilometers from the town proper and 37.8 kilometers.from Oroquieta
City, the main capital city of the province. However, the airport and seaport is located in
Ozamis City which is 80.1 kilometers in distance from the municipality. (Vicinity map)

Research Method
This study is a Descriptive type of research and data gathered involves visual
description, recording, analysis and interpretation of data through the use of the senses
to come up with a real and relevant solution to the problem.
The researchers focused on the existing developments and environmental
conditions of the research environment. This shall give the researchers ample statistical
projections with the help of the CLUP and other documents of the municipality to project
the communitys growth, especially within the CBD and its outlying zones. Other data
can be obtained through interview or questionnaires but it will be applied if the data
gathered so far wont be enough to support the study solution.
Research Tools
Tools used in the study are clerical and mechanical tools. Clerical tools include
interview, questionnaires, observation and site investigation. Written and authored
information was also used. Mechanical tools such as cameras, voice recorders, laptops
and automobile were used to gather the essential data. Cameras are used for taking
pictures and documenting the existing conditions of the site. Voice recorders are used
to record important conversations and for further analysis. Laptops are important in
encoding and saving important documents such as studies, literary works and
government data. An automobile is used to travel around the site to collect data
efficiently and consume less time traveling to other agencies for different documents
and statistics.
Research Instruments
Instruments used, which is a combination of researcher-completed and subject-
completed instruments, in the acquisition of relevant information are Rating Scales,
Flowcharts, Observation Forms, Time-and-motion logs, Questionnaires, Interviews and
Tally sheets. These shall be analyzed and interpreted to support the validity and
reliability of the study.
A rating scale is a method that requires the researchers to assign a value,
sometimes numeric, to the rated object, as a measure of some rated attribute such as
economics, traffic circulations and others.
Flowcharts are used in designing and documenting complex processes or
programs. They help visualize the data and thereby help the researchers to understand
the process, and perhaps also find flaws, bottlenecks, and other less-obvious features
within the data gathered.
Observation Forms are used to note down observations on the site and the
subjects.
Time and motion logs are instruments that are direct and continuous
observations of a task, using a timekeeping deviceto record the time taken to
accomplish a taskand it is often used whenthere are repetitive work cycles of short to
long duration, wide variety of dissimilar work is performed, or process control elements
constitute a part of the cycle.
Questionnaires are used when data or information can be extracted from the
subjects or respondents.
Interviews are conducted preferably to government officials and other important
personalities. These include interview schedules/guides for efficiency.
Tally sheets or check sheets used to collect data in real time at the location
where the data is generated. The data it captures can be quantitative or qualitative.
When the information is quantitative, the check sheet is sometimes called a tally sheet.
Subjects and Respondents
The study is focused on the redevelopment of the Bulawis Community Swimming
Pool. The people involved in the redevelopment are considered as the respondents of
the study, people living in the vicinity and in the locality and foreign and domestic
tourists.

Method of research
The research methods used in the study was a descriptive method which
involves collecting data basing on maps, interviews, observation, and population
surveys in order to get accurate information and to answer questions concerning
architectural factors and current status of tourism activities.
The interviews are present so that the researchers can gain information to
support the study, to have concrete data and solution as to architectural aspects in the
design of the building. Observation is one of the tools of data gathering in which it is
the earliest methods for acquiring knowledge. In this method of data gathering, one will
watch the appearance, behaviour and natural settings of the subject of the study.
Observing the calamities occur is one of the important factors that we must consider in
doing research methods in where the researchers observe the all factors that may affect
or/ and can be considered in the study.
All the gathered data will be analyzed and interpreted by the researchers to
answer the problems formulated and objectives derived. This includes architectural
solution, conclusions and recommendations.

Research Environment
The research environment covered the whole lot area of Bulawis Community
Swimming Pool where a trademark of beauty gives a whole new experience A haven
of enjoyment and possibilities as natural springs give life to the pool along a river-
gifted with the splendour of nature.

Sampling design
In order to determine the sample volume of the domestic tourist in Calamba, and
foreign tourists in Misamis Occidental, the researchers used the formula:
N
n = ------------------
1 + N (e)
2

Where:
n = number of sample population
N = total number of the local and foreign tourist
e = margin of error

Random sampling
Statistical treatment of data

Percentage table
Through Bar graph the researcher will be able to compare the
percentage visiting the resort every month or year.
