REPORT No. 460
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF 78 RELATED AIRFOIL SECTIONS FROM TESTS IN THE
VARIABLE-DENSITY WIND TUNNEL
By EASTMAN N. JACOBS, KENNETH E. WARD, and ROBBET M. PINKERTON
REPRINT OF REPORT No. 4 EO, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 1 9 3 3
SUMMARY
An investigation of a large group oj related, airfoils
was made in the N.A.O.A. variable-density wind tunnel
at a large value oj the Reynolds Number. The tests were
made to provide data that may be directly employedfor a
rational choice of the most suitable airfoil section for a
given application. The variation of the aerodynamic
characteristics with variations in thickness and meanAine
form were therefore systematically studied.
The related airfoil profiles for this investigation were
developed by combining certain profile thickness forms,
obtained by varying the maximum thickness of a basic
distribution, with certain mean lines, obtained by varying
the length and the position of the maximum mean-line
ordinate. A number of values of these shape variables
were used to derive afamily of airfoils. For the purposes
of this investigation the construction and tests were limited
to 68 airfoils of thisfamily. In addition to these, several
supplementary airfoils have been, included in order to
study the effects of certain other changes in theform of the
mean line and in the thickness distribution.
The results are presented in the standard graphic form
representing the airfoil characteristics for infinite aspect
rath and for aspect ratio 6. A table is also given by
means of which the important characteristics of all the
airfoils may be conveniently compared. The variation of
the aerodynamic characteristics with changes in shape is
shown by additional curves and tables. A comparison
is made, where possible, with thin-airfoil theory, a
summary ofwhich is presented in an appendix.
INTRODUCTION
The forms of the ai rfoi l se cti ons that are i n common
use today are , di re ctly or i ndi re ctly, the re sult of

ai rfoi ls. Pre v i ously, ai rfoi ls such as the R.A.F. 15
and the U.S.A. 27, de v e lope d from ai rfoi l profi le s

The de si gn of an e ffi ci e nt ai rplane e ntai ls the care ful

state me nt i s parti cularly true of the choi ce of the wi ng.
Without a knowledge of the variations of the ae rody-

v ari ati ons of shape that affe ct the we i ght of the struc-

The purpose of the i nv e sti gati on re porte d he re i n was

de si gn of ne w shape s hav i ng be tte r characte ri sti cs.
Ai rfoi l profi le s may be consi de re d as made up of cer-
tain profile-thickness forms disposed about certain
me an li ne s. The major shape v ari able s the n be come
two, the thi ckne ss form and the me an-li ne form. The

The re late d ai rfoi l profi le s for thi s i nv e sti gati on we re

of the mean line is referred to throughout this report as the
camber of the airfoil and the position of the maximum
Ordinate of the mean line as the position of the camber.
An airfoil, produced as described above, is designated by
a number offour digits: the first indicates the camber in
percent of the chord; the second, the position of the camber
in tenths of the chordfrom the leading edge; and the last
two, the maximum thickness in percent of the chord.
Thus the N.A.C.A. 2315 ai rfoi l has a maxi mumcambe r
of 2 pe rce nt of the chord at a posi ti on 0.3 of the chord
from the le adi ng e dge , and a maxi mum thi ckne ss of 15
pe rce nt of the chord; the N.A.C.A. 0012 ai rfoi l i s a
symme tri cal ai rfoi l hav i ng a maxi mum thi ckne ss of 12
pe rce nt of the chord.
In addi ti on to the syste mati c se ri e s of ai rfoi ls,
