The Delphos Relay for

Life Committee will hold
a community meeting at
6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the
Walterick-Hemme Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 3035.
The committee is asking for input on proposed changes to the
Delphos Relay for Life.
Everyone is welcome.

Johnny Appleseed
to visit library
The legendary Johnny
Appleseed will visit the
Delphos Public Library
from 4-5 p.m. Oct. 7 for
children in grades 2-6.
Appleseed impersonator
Naturalist Mark Mohr will
regale the children with
stories and a live portrayal.
Afterward, participants
will make caramel apples
with various toppings.
The program will
take place in the First
Edition Building.
Registration is
required beginning
Monday and there is a
limit of 25 attendees.
Call the library at 419695-4015 to register.

The test scores are in and Ohio

schools have received their grades. The
Ohio Department of Education released
the 2014 Ohio School Report Cards
on Sunday. As always, there were new
indicators and tougher standards.
Our 2014 report cards include
grades of A through F for up to
nine measures, depending on the
school or district, plus a 10th, K-3
Literacy measure, coming soon,
Superintendent of Public Instruction
Dr. Richard A. Ross pointed out.
New this year was the hike in a
passing percentage from 75 to 80
percent.
At Delphos City Schools, the two
achievement grades were a B and
an A. The A was earned for meeting
95.8 percent of the state goals. The

performance index of 86.5 percent

resulted in the grade of B. That grade
reflects the number of students who
passed the state test.
The gap-closing grade given was
also an B. The grade is meant to measure if every student is succeeding
regardless of income, race, ethnicity
or disability. The districts overall
progress grade was an A as was its
graduation rate.
We are very pleased but definitely not satisfied. Well work even
harder to bring those lower grades
up, Jefferson Superintendent Kevin
Wolfe said. We received good marks
but we always want to go beyond
where we are now. We want all As.
Grades at Ottoville Local Schools
were similar. An A was earned for
meeting nearly 100 percent of the
state goals and a performance index
of 89.4 percent resulted in the grade
of B. The gap-closing grade and

graduation rate for Ottoville were

both A and the overall progress grade
was B.
Im extremely proud of our
kids, Superintendent Scott Mangas
said. We passed all areas over the
new 80-percent mark. We have historically done well on the report card
and its hard to make improvements
every year.
Mangas outlined the challenges of
meeting the progress markers when
students area already scoring high
on testing.
Say you have two runners on
your track team. One runs a mile in
four minutes and one runs it in eight,
he said. Its really easy for the one
who ran it in eight to improve. The
guy who ran it in four minutes has
to work twice as hard to shave time
off. But, which one do you want on
your team?
We have to really challenge our

students and teachers to keep seeing

improvement.
Fort Jennings saw a grade of B
across the board in performance
index (85.9), indicators met (87.5)
and gap (83.3) with an overall progress grade of C. The district received
an A for graduation rate.
Students and teachers did a great
job, Jennings Superintendent Nick
Langhals said. We missed three
indicators. We worked hard because
we knew they were changing the
pass/fail score from 75 to 80 percent. I think everyone is in a transition period and working through the
report cards.
Langhals said the district will
be looking at new ways to reach
students and increase professional
development.
Well also be integrating more
and more technology for students and
teachers, he added.

Gomer church

Church will celebrate
the ordination/installation of its new pastor,
Jeffrey S. Frantz, during

The installation
will be lead by Dr. D.
Elizabeth Mauro from
the National Association
of Congregational
Christian Churches.
The church is extending
an invitation to the local
community, local clergy
and their congregations
to celebrate with them.
Pastor Frantz and his
wife, Brenda, will be the
guests of honor later in the
day with a picnic at 3 p.m.
at the Gomer Dads Club
for a fun afternoon with
games, fellowship and food.

DELPHOS Attendance at the annual Canal Days

Toast to the City seems to know no bounds. The
Entertainment Tent and surrounding area was bursting
with 543 people ready to raise their glass to Delphos and
the waterway the festival honors.
Guests were welcomed by Emcee Bob Ulm,
Mayor Michael Gallmeier and Canal Days Committee
Chairman Derek Sterling.
2014 Canal Day Queen Katie Berelsman and members of her court: Emma Wurst, Sarah Fitch, Tatiana
Olmeda, Bailey Gorman and Kiersten Teman; mingled
with the crowd after Bereslmans address.
Miami-Erie Canal Corridor Association member
Steve Dorsten gave an overview of recent activity on
the canal.
I want you to remember a number $8 million,

he began. Thats how much is cost to build the MiamiErie Canal from Toledo to Cincinnati 250 miles.
Cities and towns along the canal knew it would bring
inventions and prosperity.
Dorsten moved on to outline projects spanning the
last five years from Piqua to Spencerville including new
trails along the tow path, which was used by the horses
to move canal boats.
Piqua spent $217,000 on a canal exhibit. Lockington,
a town of just 1,000 people got a grant and spent $2 million to rebuild its lock, he said. Fort Loramie spent
money on an improved trail and Minster spent $940,00
on moving trees and brush and rip-rap. New Bremen
spent $2 million on rebuilding the banks and restoring
its lock and plans to spend another $600,000 on its trail.
St. Marys spent $2.6 million on rebuilding its lock,
building a canal boat, landscaping and a shelterhouse.
Heritage Trails and Johnny Appleseed park districts
spent $800,000 on five miles of trail improvements,
Spencerville is planning a $100,000 trail improvement

and the Delphos Canal Commission has spent tens of

thousands of dollars remodeling the museum.
A quick math whiz in the crowd tallied the numbers
and came up with more than $9.5 million in improvements to a 50-mile corridor.
The canal is still a viable resource and is alive and
well, Dorsten concluded.
Canal Commission Permanent Trustee Lou Hohman
closed the program.
A couple of brothers from German, the Bredeicks,
decided this would be a great place to build a city, he
said. They wanted it to be the largest city in the United
States. Cholera ended that dream but we still celebrate
the heritage that dream brought us.
Hohman invited everyone to an open house at the
Canal Museum on Oct. 12.
Country musics Joe Denim took the stage to finish
the evening.

Residents remember Brothers of the Brush

BY STEPHANIE GROVES
DHI Media Staff Writer

DELPHOS - Brothers of the Brush was a tradition started long

ago, back in 1951 when members of Kiwanis and Delphos businessmen grew beards and/or mustaches in whatever form they
wished for the Centennial celebration of Canal Days, which was
known as Bargain Days back then.
Edgar Van Autreve said he and the rest of the Brothers got a
lot of people involved in the fun.
All told, close to 120 men participated and each had their pictures taken by John Hoverman. The 120 individual oval-shaped
photos were placed on a large 12-x-24-inch sheet, similar to the
old school class photos.
In 1951, Jackie Fritz was in high school at the time and recalls
that her dad, Bob Rozelle, for the first time in his life, growing a
full mustache after the first of the year for Canal Days. She said it
was very bushy and coarse.
They - the Brothers - had a button or permit to grow a beard
or mustache, she said. The Keystone Cops would pick up, arrest
and fine men who did not have a beard or mustache. It was all in
good fun.
It was a big deal getting ready for that. Fritz said they judged
the mens facial hair and gave out prizes for the best beard and
best mustache.
Fritz said the Brothers of the Brush competition was resur- Edgar Van Autreve is an original member of the 1951 Centennial Brothers

LIMA Apollo Career Centers ABLE/GED program will

offer students GED practice tests for free through the See For
Free program from Monday until Oct. 3.
The program is intended to encourage more adult learners to get their GED which is the equivalent to a high school
diploma. The practice test helps learners see if they are ready
for the real GED test and gives them a free personalized study
plan based on their results.
GED Testing Service research data shows the practice test
is more than 95 percent predictive of how someone will score
on the GED test.
Teachers and students can use the GED Ready as a real-time
indicator of a students readiness. The detailed score report
lists specific skills and knowledge the student needs to master
to pass the GED test.
The information helps our instructors customize what they
need to teach a student and helps students focus on the specific
content they need help with, which decreases the amount of
study time and cuts down on guesswork, said Joyce Tracy,
Apollo ABLE/GED manager.
One in five Americans lacks a high school diploma.
Its critically important that we give encouragement and
information to our friends, neighbors and family members who
didnt graduate high school about taking the first big step to a
better life, Tracy said.
Apollo offers free classes and multiple locations to improve
reading, writing, math and computer skills. They also offer a
free preparatory class designed specifically for adults who will
be taking the GED exam.

program thats stuck in the past and an economy thats not waiting around for us to make it
better. The result is that more Americans are
left behind without the skills required to find
a new job and get back on the payroll. We
need a program thats more dynamic and more
flexible to meet the changing needs of todays
global economy, King said. Our bill gives
states the ability to break through the government red tape and think in new and innovative
ways to help match people who need jobs
with the employers who can provide them.
In 2012, Congress gave the Department of
Labor (DOL) the authority to work with states
to better link the UI program with on-the-job
training that leads to the crucial skills training
and relationships the unemployed need to get
a job. Participation is entirely voluntary for
both the UI beneficiaries and the individual
states, and statute requires the program to be
cost neutral.
Former Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis heralded the waiver as a key component in the
first major overhaul of the Unemployment
Insurance system in decades. However, in
2012 DOL released almost 20 pages of guidance
and requirements that states believe is overly
bureaucratic and administratively burdensome.

INFORMATION SUMITTED
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Rob
Portman (R-Ohio) and Angus King (I-Maine)
introduced bipartisan legislation Thursday to
provide the unemployed with the information,
skills and relationships they need to get back
to work.
The On-the-Job Training Act provides
critical improvements to the Unemployment
Insurance (UI) program to help the workers
collecting UI benefits return to the workforce
more quickly. The bill would give states the
flexibility to connect their UI programs to onthe-job training for the unemployed.
We often hear that the federal unemployment programs do not do enough to help
people get back to work, Portman said. We
need a system that connects the unemployed
with the skills they need to compete in todays
global economy. This legislation builds on
existing law to help workers avoid long periods of unemployment and develop the skills
and the relationships that are so critical to
getting back on a career track.

INFORMATION SUBMITTED
SANDUSKY Cedar Point, The Roller
Coaster Capital of the World!, will introduce a dynamically new riding experience when it unleashes Rougarou in the
spring of 2015.
Named after a terrifying werewolf-like
creature in French folklore, Rougarou [rooguh-roo] feeds on screams and lurks in and
around the swampy lagoon at the center of
the park, shared with other coasters like
Iron Dragon and Top Thrill Dragster.
Rougarous floorless trains
will take riders on an epic
journey at speeds reaching
60 mph as their feet dangle
just inches above the track
and the murky waters below.
The trains will be manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, Monthey,
Switzerland, the same team behind rides
like Raptor and GateKeeper, and will
transform the ride experience dramatically
while utilizing the structure and track of
the former Mantis roller coaster.
The ride begins with a climb to the top
of the 145-foot-tall first hill, providing
amazing views of the Cedar Point skyline. After reaching the apex, the trains
will make a 180-degree turn to the right
and plummet 137 feet, at a 52-degree
angle, to within inches above the water.
Thrill-seekers caught in Rougarous grasp
will then be flipped upside-down by a
119-foot-tall vertical loop, spun around a
103-foot-tall dive loop, whipped around
a highly-banked 360-degree turn and then
twisted upside-down again by the worlds
only inclined loop on a floorless coaster,

Rougarou.
Rougarou is going to be a fantastic
addition to our coaster lineup and our
guests are going to love it, said Jason
McClure, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. With the swampy
waters below, the vibrant colors of the
supports and track, lighting and other
effects, it will be a ride like no other at
the park.
2015 will also mark the debut of the
newly-renovated
Hotel
Breakers. Located along
the mile-long Cedar Point
Beach, Hotel Breakers will
complete its two-year transformation into the ultimate
resort destination. Along
with a new exterior, the modernized hotel
will have a new entrance portal, classic interior finishes, newly-furnished and
remodeled rooms with LCD TVs, new
furniture, bedding and dcor, and many
other amenities and offerings. Additional
enhancements include a new Starbucks
and the Surf Lounge bar inside the famous
rotunda, widened exterior green space with
panoramic views of Lake Erie and an outdoor water play area with zero depth entry
and splash features.
We want to provide a well-rounded
and complete vacation experience for our
guests, and the enhancements at the Hotel
Breakers will help them have just that,
McClure said. It will have a fun and
fresh feel, is steps away from the park
and its a great place to start new family
traditions.

The campus Orthodoxy on forbidding many Orthodoxies

At first, Vanderbilt University's new credo
sounded like lofty academic lingo from the
pluralistic world of higher education, not the
stuff of nationwide debates about religious
liberty.
Leaders of Vanderbilt student groups were
told they must not discriminate on the basis
of "race, sex, religion, color, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, military service,
or genetic information. ... In addition, the
University does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation,
gender identity, or gender expression."
The bottom line: this "all-comers policy"
forbade campus-recognized student groups
from requiring their leaders to affirm the very
doctrines and policies that defined them as
faith-based, voluntary associations in the first
place.
This private university in Nashville -which once had Methodist ties -- affirmed that
creeds were acceptable, except when used as
creeds. Orthodoxy was OK, except when it
conflicted with the new campus orthodoxy
that, in practice, banned selected orthodoxies.
Ultimately, 14 religious groups moved off
campus, affecting 1,400 evangelical, Catholic
and Mormon students. Stripped of the right
to use the word "Vanderbilt," some religious
leaders began wearing shirts proclaiming simply, "We are here."
In the furor, some conservatives called this

TERRY MATTINGLY

On
Religion
struggle another war between faith and "secularism." In this case, that judgment was inaccurate and kept many outsiders from understanding what actually happened, according to the
Rev. Tish Harrison Warren, an Anglican minister who worked with InterVarsity Christian
Fellowship at Vanderbilt during the dispute.
"What Vanderbilt did affirmed the beliefs
of some religious groups and rejected those
of others. That isn't secularism. Vanderbilt
established that there is an orthodoxy on the
campus, which means that it has taken a sectarian stand," said Warren, who now works
with InterVarsity at the University of Texas in
Austin.
"The university established some approved
doctrines and now wants to discriminate in
order to defend them. ... As a private school,
it has every right to do that," she added.
Meanwhile, conservative Christian schools
"have their own doctrinal statements, but

they're very upfront about that. Students who

go to those schools know what they're getting
into. The question is whether Vanderbilt will be
just as candid and tell students about these new
limitations on free speech, freedom of association and freedom of religion" on campus.
The key is whether creeds are enforced,
noted psychologist Richard McCarty during a 2012 Vanderbilt forum. At that time
he was vice chancellor for academic affairs.
Vanderbilt leaders believe that it's wrong to
require a student to "profess allegiance to
Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior"
in order to lead a Christian group, he said,
according to a forum transcript.
"I'm Catholic. What if my faith beliefs
guided all of the decisions I make from day to
day?" Hearing objections from critics, he continued: "No they shouldn't! No they shouldn't!
No they shouldn't! ... As a Catholic, if I held
that life begins at conception, I'd have a very
big problem with our hospital" at Vanderbilt.
"Would I not? ... I would, but I don't. ... We
don't want to have personal religious views
intrude on good decision-making on this campus."
Many other Catholics disagreed and had to
leave the campus.
Now leaders in credal groups face a growing challenge in state schools, where discrimination policies affect equal access to student
budgets. In the California State University

system -- with 450,000 students on 23 campuses -- leaders are pressing toward a policy
requiring student-group leaders to pledge, in
writing, they will not "discriminate on the base
of race, religion, national origin, ethnicity,
color, age, gender, marital status, citizenship,
sexual orientation, or disability."
Once again, said Warren, the issue is
whether these campus policies promote pluralism or weaken it. Ironically, 70 percent of
InterVarsity students in these affected regions
are persons of color.
Also, it's crucial to know that on some
doctrinal issues -- especially linked to sexuality -- many evangelical students are eager to
separate themselves from traditional, orthodox
Christianity, she said. These tensions are real.
"It's great that we welcome progressives
into our groups. I think it's great that we welcome students who don't believe the Gospel,
at all," said Warren. "We need to be open and
joyful and embrace as many people as we
can. That said, we also need to know what we
believe and what we must proclaim as the truth
-- without shame."

T-Birds hand Lady Cats

sweep in volleyball
By JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS Lima Central Catholic has built up quite a
volleyball reputation over the years in producing quality hitters and setters, so Jefferson head coach Joy DeVelvis knew
her team was facing a tough out THursday night at Jefferson
High School.
It wasnt the Wildcat defense nor effort that was the problem
against the Lady Thunderbirds; it was a struggling offense that
led to a 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 sweep at the hands of the guests.
Our effort was so much better today than it was Tuesday;
we competed much better today than that night, DeVelvis
acknowledged. I thought we had good touches at the net on
their hits and we dug well. We just struggled to get an offense
going.
That was made more difficult by the defensive work of LCC
libero Casey Clark, who was excellent digging up many of the
Wildcat attacks.
LCC coach Wes Horstman was looking for emotion from
his squad.
We are trying to get the girls to not only play hard from
the start of a match but play loud, he explained. It was pretty
workmanlike today. What helps is we have a number of weapons we can use at the net. We have a good setter and she uses
the hitters we have well; we didnt have one hitter with many
kills but we had several girls with a decent number.
The first set was tight most of the way; neither team could
put a consistent enough offense together to piece more than a
3-point run and both had plenty of hitting errors (LCC with 10,
adding three service errors; the Wildcats had eight mis-hits and
one missed serve). Jefferson senior Andrea Geise had all five
of her kills in the set but LCC had more variety in their attack
that setter Natalie Snider (19 assists) could go to. As well, the
visitors got more free points overall (17 aces, including three
the first set, to 3 for the hosts). In the end, an off-speed kill over
the Jefferson blockers by Alexis Taylor (4 kills) finished it off.
The second set started off the same way: neither team able
to get much going as far as spurts. LCC took the lead for good
at 6-5 on a hitting error and used a big 4-0 spurt all off aces,
kills or stuffs to take a 12-7 edge on an off-balance kill by
Shannon Daley (3 kills). The Lady Wildcats tried to stay close
but then a killer 8-0 span with Ella Delamotte contributing
three of her team-high five kills and two aces by Snider put
them up 19-9 on a stuff by Laura Colombo (3 stuffs). Jefferson
had a 5-0 spurt a push and ace by senior Brooke Culp (6
assists, 3 kills, 2 aces), a stuff by freshman Macy Wallace (2
stuffs, 3 assists) and two hitting errors to get within 19-14.
However, a spike by Colombo ended that uprising and LCC
put it away on a kill by Sydney Zerante (5 kills).
Jefferson came out and led 5-3 in the third set on a hitting
error. They led 6-5 later on another hitting error (25 on the
night by the Thunderbirds, 21 for the Wildcats) but a mishit by the hosts and an ace by Gabby ODowd (8 aces) gave
the guests the lead for good as part of a 7-0 spurt (4 aces by
ODowd). Steadily, the visitors added to their lead and the last
ace by ODowd completed the saweep.

DELPHOS Jefferson girls soccer

coach Josiah Stober wanted to prepare
his Lady Wildcat unit for the tournament.
That is one reason for scheduling a traditional power like St. Marys
Memorial.
Even though the Lady Roughriders
shut the Red and White out 2-0 on a
brilliant Thursday afternoon at the St.
Johns Annex, he saw a lot that gave him
positive vibes.
Our effort was much better today
than Monday; thats the effort weve
been looking for all year. We showed
some feistiness against a physical and
skilled WBL team and didnt back
down, Stober acknowledged. We have
talked a lot about playing with a lot of
intensity and effort against every opponent and I believe the girls are starting to
realize how they have to play every time
out. We also matched their physicality
and I liked that, too.
Memorial first-year coach Seth
Hertenstein figured his youthful team
needs to finish better.
We have been the better team in
most of our matches but we dont finish; we get to the last third and have
struggled putting the ball in the back of
the net, he added. Were a younger
team than normal; we have about six

freshmen and sophomores starting. We
have some veterans but were struggling
to fit the pieces together overall.
The Roughriders (4-3-1) controlled
the orb much of the first half but the
Wildcat (6-2-1) defense and goalkeeper
Jessica Pimpas (14 saves versus 17 shots
on-goal) staved them off, either preventing good looks to begin with or coming

up with the saves.

One of the better efforts came at
21:10 when Kami Menchhofer blasted
a 12-yarder from outside the right post
that was deflected by Pimpas and kicked
out of bounds by the defense to save a
goal.

rough dual match season in
the Western Buckeye League
to post a good score at the
league tournament Thursday.
The Bulldogs shot a 374
Thursday at Willow Bend
Country Club to finish eighth
at the tournament. Elida finished just ahead of Van Wert
as they finished with a 378.
Kenton won the WBL tournament with a 317 team score,
while defending WBL champion Bath was second at 330.
Elida did not win a match
during the WBL dual match
season but used three good
scores to finish ahead of
two teams that handed them
defeats.
Brett Shook led the
Bulldog effort Thursday with
an 89 (45-44) followed by
Jimmie Ebeling with a 91
(48-43), Drew Sarno with
a 92 (42-50) and Patrick
Brockert had a 102 (49-53).
Carson Hurst had a 104 for
the Bulldogs and Kaven
Hurst a 109.
Ebeling received WBL
Honorable Mention honors
for the 2014 season.
Freshman
Jared
Hernandez led the Cougars
Thursday with an 88 (43-45).
Thursdays round, combined
with his play in WBL regular
season matches, helped the
freshman earn one of 13 first
team spots for 2014. A tie led
to 13 golfers being named to
the WBL first team for 2014.

first year, Van Wert coach
Jeff Hood said. As a freshman in high school there are
very few people that can be
WBL first team. His brother
did it as a freshman and sophomore but its not something
that is easy to do again. This
is an indication he has a lot
of ability and golf talent. He
still has some growth to do as
to the mental part of the game
and getting better with strategic decisions and his overall
mindset in not being so hard
on himself.

Fellow freshman Daniel

Magowan had a 92 (47-45)
for Van Wert, senior Brandon
Hernandez finished with a 95 (
49-46) and junior Jacob Covey
had a 103 (47-56). Sophomore
Gabe Rollins had a 106 for
the day and sophomore Carter
Eikenbary had a 116.
Brandon Hernandez was
named to the Honorable
Mention list for the Cougars.
We would have liked to
have played better today,
Hood said. We just have
one senior, so it was a learn-

ing and growing year for the

Van Wert kids, learning about
tournament golf, the WBL
and 18 hole tournaments for
the first team in their high
school career. Hopefully we
will learn from it. It was fun
to host this but we would
have liked to have competed
better.
In the overall WBL standings, the Cougars finished
eighth, which is based on
their regular season standing
and their tournament finish.
Kenton won the WBL
tournament with a 317 as
they were led by tournament
medalist Britton Hensel (3237) with a one under par
round of 69. Anthony McKee
followed with a 78, Luke
Nichols had an 80 and Daniel
Fink a 90.
Evan Hall led Bath with a

with an 82, Geoffrey Braun a
93 and Jimmy Luebke a 94.

Depleted Cougars best Elida in
WBL volleyball
BY JIM COX
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com
ELIDA Missing two starters
because of illness, several Van Wert
players were forced into different roles
against Elida Thursday night. The
Cougars rose to the challenge and pulled
out an impressive three-set win, 25-23,
25-20, 25-20. Van Wert is now 8-2
overall and 3-1 in the Western Buckeye
League. Elida is 5-8 and 0-4.
Van Wert was without its outstanding
setter, Amanda Coplin, and its tallest
player, 5-foot-11 middle hitter Alexis
Dowdy, forcing coach Vicki Smith into
some major changes.
I thought my girls did excellent
tonight, with bringing up sophomore
Megan Spray from JV, and sophomore
Peyton Fleming becoming the number
one setter in Amandas spot. We also
moved Alexa Dunlap to middle. She
doesnt like to play middle, but she did
well tonight.
Sophomore Emma Kohn, who normally plays JV, started on the varsity in

this one.
Dunlap, who, at 5-foot-6, may be the
shortest middle hitter in the WBL, and
McKenzie Collins, only 5-7, were the
Cougs middles Tuesday, and the two
seniors led in kills with nine apiece.
Fleming and senior libero Riley Jones
led in digs with 15 each while Collins
added 11. Fleming and Spray
were tops in assists with 14 and
eight.
It was a splendid defensive
performance by Van Wert. Even
when Dowdy is available, the
Cougars are almost always at a height
disadvantage, and this match was no
exception. While Elida fans were cheering the apparent kills by the taller Lady
Dogs, a Cougar defender would frequently come up with a miraculous save,
leading to many extended rallies. The
steadier Cougars made far fewer errors,
and in the end that proved to be the difference.
The first set was a toss-up. The biggest lead was at 17-12, Van Wert, but
Elida inched its way back into a 19-19
tie. A Collins kill and a Jones service
ace made it 21-19, but Joness next serve

went into the net, bringing it back to

21-20. An Elida serve also went into the
net, and the Dogs outstanding spiker,
5-11 junior Summer Grogg (11 kills,
11 digs), blasted one long and another
into the net to put the Cougars on the
brink at 24-20. However, two Grogg
kills, sandwiched around a long Van
Wert kill attempt, got the home
team within one at 24-23. An
Elida lift violation ended the
suspense at 25-23.
The second set was another
thriller, with nine ties and four
lead changes. Until the very end, the
biggest lead by either team was at 16-13,
Elida. With the Lady Dogs up 19-18,
the tide turned. Three straight Elida
errors and a Fleming kill made it 22-19,
Cougars. Elida junior Megan Tracy temporary broke up the momentum with
a kill, but Collins countered with two
straight kills, the second a lucky one
that hit the top of the net and dropped
straight down on the Dogs side, impossible to save. An errant Elida pass that
went into the net ended it at 25-20.

Third-ranked Redskins sweep Jays

Wildcats, Blue Jays in

league grid battles tonight

Both Jefferson and St. Johns are into their conference grid
seasons in earnest.
The Wildcats (3-0, 2-0 Northwest Conference) bring in
Allen East tonight under the lights at Stadium Park in an NWC
tilt, while the Blue Jays (2-1, 0-1 Midwest Athletic Conference)
hit the long road to Fort Recovery for a MAC tussle.
ALLEN EAST AT JEFFERSON
Jefferson head coach Chris Sommers anticipates an almost-mirror image of his Wildcats
when the Mustangs come to town.
They love to run the football and they
have a number of guys that carry it. They each
provide a different skill set; most of them returned from last
year, Sommers acknowledged. What I am most imprsssed
with in that team is its offensive line; they are big and physical
and they are a veteran unit; they want to pound you. The kids
are excited about this challenge because its a physical team
and I expect a tough battle.
The Wildcats will be hampered without starting middle
linebacker Dalton Hicks, who will sit this game though he
will be dressed due to a nagging ankle injury that he first
suffered in the teams scrimmage at Marion Local.
Sommers figures that the reasons his unit is 3-0 coming
off a thrilling 22-19 win at Blufdfton are two-fold.
One, the kids have bought into the offensive and defensive
system we put in from the start. Two, they have worked hard
from the get-go; they play extremely hard for us as a coaching staff, Sommers added. Perhaps going with that is a great
team chemistry; these kids genuinely enjoy playing alongside
each other and for each other. What we are doing is all on their
efforts.
At the same time, we have a coaching staff that really does
a good job of teaching the kids what we want and supporting
each other. I am blessed to have this group of kids and coaches
in my first season.
ST. JOHNS AT FORT RECOVERY
For St. Johns mentor Todd Schulte, this version of the Indians is not your typical version.
The idea that we can go down there and
get an automatic win is gone; if we have that
attitude, it will be a long Friday night, Schulte
began. They might be one of the most improved programs
in the MAC. They are very athletic outside and they have a
sophomore quarterback that really throws the ball well. They
pose a challenge to us because they can stretch the field.
In Schultes mind, his Jays have to make plays, like they did
in their first two contests but didnt in last weeks 20-7 loss to
Versailles.
The first two games, we showed tremendous resilience
to get those wins. We had to come from behind to beat Elida
in two ovettimes, then had to come from behind to beat LCC
in the 2-day game, he added. We simply made more plays,
such as forcing a crucial turnover that we turned into points.
We didnt do that last week and we had our chances to do so.
We have a lot of kids going both ways and were to the
point that weve played our way through it; weve played our
way into good condition. We work the kids hard to get there
but we also dont want to leave them with no legs for the game;
that is a fine line. Were also slowly building some depth and
picking our spots to give them a rest.
Both games kick off at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

DELPHOS

The
Midwest Athletic Conference
was well represented in the
latest O.H.S.V.C.A. State
Volleyball Poll with five
ranked teams.
Versailles is ranked #1 and
Coldwater is #11 in Division
III. New Knoxville is at #15
and Marion Local is currently
ranked low for their strong
tradition, coming in at #18 in
Division IV.
Also ranked among the
small schools is St. Henry being
put towards the top at #3.
Most coaches will say that
being recognized in the rankings is a nice honor but their
teams have to prove it on
the court. The Redskins did
just that at Robert A. Arnzen
gymnasium Thursday night,
knocking off the Jays 25-13,
25-21, 25-14.
The Redskins showed why
they are considered one of
the best teams in the state by
attacking the Jays in the first
set with a 9-0 lead. St. Johns
first point of the evening
came when St. Henrys serve
landed in the net. The Blue
Jay offense finally woke up
as Maddie Pohlman slammed
a kill and Maddie Buettners
block fell in for a score. After
a kill by St. Henrys Savannah
Wourms made the score 12-4,
Maya Gerker led the Jays with
an all-out dig followed by an
assist to Madison Ellis for
the kill. The Redskins went

volleyball teams met at Ray Etzler
Gymnasium Thursday evening to renew
their cross-county, Northwest Conference
rivalry, in a game that lived up to the billing. The Lady Knights came back from
an early deficit to take control of the
match for an eventual 3-1 win (23-25,
25-19, 25-15, 25-15), in front of a large
contingent of fans of both schools.
It was a battle, said Crestview
coach Tammy Gregory. We knew it
was going to be coming in.
The atmosphere surrounding the
match was that of a tournament match,
which is to be expected when these two
squads square off. Its a big conference
win, continued Gregory. Thats the
best Lincolnview team Ive seen in a
long time. They have so many weapons.

Schulte. The St. Johns backline played great defense with

dig after dig of strong returns
made by the Redskins. Backto-back kills by Buettner and
Geise pulled the Jays within
8-7 and St. Henry Coach Diana
Kramer called time to stop
the Jays run. The Jays took
the lead back as consecutive
returns by the Redskins failed
to land inbounds. Both teams
began attacking strong at the
net as Olivia Stahl had a kill
for St. Henry and Pohlmans
kill bounced off a block by
the Skins. St. Johns tied the
score at 15 with an assist by
Schulte for a Olivia Kahny
slam. The Jays committed two
more errors, along with an ace

They were here to play - they were here

to compete.
That was evident from the jump,
as the Lady Lancers (4-6, 2-1) opened
the game with a tip from senior
middle hitter Baylee Neate and
turned it into a 3-0 lead. We started out really strong, explained
Lincolnview coach JaNahn Evans.
It was a rivalry game, so the
intensity was there on both sides.
The Lady Lancers ran the lead
to six, 13-7, later in the set, thanks
in part to three kills from sophomore
outside hitter Katie McClure and an ace
and a block from Neate. I thought our
defense was really good at the beginning. I thought our serve receive was
spot-on. Our serves were aggressive,
said Evans.
Crestview (10-1, 2-1) was forced to use
a timeout down 13-7 in the set, and came
out of the break strong. A kill from senior
middle blocker Megan Hartman and an
ace from junior libero Tianna Rager helped

Crestview knot the game at 13.

Lincolnview answered with consecutive points from senior outside hitter
Ashley Teman to take a 15-13 lead, and
turned it into a 24-20 lead after
a point from sophomore middle
blocker Katlyn Wendel gave the
visitors set-point.
Crestview countered with
a block from senior setter
Mackenzie Riggenbach, an ace
from Rager and a tip from senior
middle blocker Courtney Trigg to
pull within one, 24-23. Neate closed the
door on Crestview with an emphatic kill,
however, to give the Lady Lancers an
early 1-0 match lead.
I think we just didnt come out ready
to play from the start, Gregory said.
We had to make a lot of adjustments.
The crowd and the atmosphere was great
for us, but I think at the same time it got
the best of us.

Lady Cavaliers double-up Lancers

VAN WERT The Lincolnview Lady Lancers welcomed

the Coldwater Lady Cavaliers to Lincolnview High School on
Thursday night for girls high school soccer action. The Lady
Cavs used two late goals to win a close match 4-2 over the
Lady Lancers.
The Lady Cavs struck first in the 22nd minute as
Amanda Kahlig beat the Lancer goal keeper Maddie
Gorman to give Coldwater a 1-0 lead.
Lincolnview got the equalizer in the 37th minute when Julia Thatcher crossed the ball to Brooke
Schroeder. Schroeders shot beat Coldwater goalkeeper Brittany Muhlenkamp but hit the top post. Fortunately
for the Lady Lancers, Schroeder tracked down the rebound
and slotted home the ball to tie the game at 1-1.
Coldwater wasted no time in taking back the lead when, on the
ensuing kickoff, Sudhoff gave the Lady Cavs the lead back with a
goal in the 37th minute. Coldwater went into the half with a 2-1 lead.
It took the Lady Lancers over half way through the second half to get the second equalizer. Schroeder, this time in
between two Lady Cav defenders, took a shot at the left post.
Muhlenkamp dove to stop the shot but couldnt reach it and in
the 64th minute Lincolnview tied the score at 2-2.

18-15 Redskin lead. St. Johns
continued to hang with St.
Henry as a tapper by Buettner
fell in and short set by Gerker
for a Geise kill cut the deficit
to one. St. Henrys third ace of
the set and a kill by Stammen
extended their lead to three.
A kill by Geise from another
Schulte assist wasnt enough
as two more returns fell into
the net, giving the Redskins a
hard-fought victory.
The Jays started set three
strong with a pair of kills by
Pohlman and Buettner block
to lead 3-1. The Jays garnered their biggest lead of
the night at 5-1 as St. Henrys
returns went out of bounds.
Good teams battle back and
St. Henry turned its game up,
scoring the next 12 points to
lead 13-5. A nice push return
by Kahny, along with a kill
shot on the next serve ended
the scoring streak. St. Johns
libero Kestley Hulihan displayed outstanding hustle on a
back-and-forth volley, saving
a ball deep in the Jays backcourt that was wasted as Stahl
slammed a kill for a 14-7
advantage. The Skins serves
continued to baffle the Jays
as they landed five aces in
the set despite Coach Carolyn
Dammeyer continuing to substitute different players to stop
the onslaught. Geise recorded
two more blocks in the set
and Pohlman had a kill but
it wasnt enough as the Jays
dropped the match 3-0.

I thought the kids played great. Coldwater, our history

with them is getting beat 4-0 and beat 3-0 and we were in the
game probably til the last 10 minutes. Our kids did a great
job. I can see theyre improving from practice, things we do
in practice, I can see them coming out in games. I was real
happy with how they played, said Lincolnview coach Mark
McCleery.
The Lady Lancers held the game at 2-2 until the 75th minute when Maura Hoying flashed in front of the Lincolnview
goalkeeper Thatcher, who had replace Gorman early in
the match. Hoying flashed to her right and took aim at
the top right corner of the net. Hoyings 75th minute
goal gave Coldwater a 3-2 lead.
First half, our defense was just retreating back and
giving them 10 yards and we gave them some good
shots. In the second half we fixed something and Im happy
with that. We had a break on that third goal and I talked with
them after the game. I dont think that will happen again. Its
just simple things probably a mental break down we were
probably a little tired we had a couple girls who played the
whole game, added coach McCleery.
The Lady Cavs put the game on ice with another goal in the
78th minute from Hoying as she netted her second goal on the
night giving Coldwater a 4-2 lead in the game.
Coldwater improves to 2-6-1 on the season and Lincolnview
drops to 3-6-1 on the year.

The Cougars took charge of the

third set early and maintained a
lead in the 5-to-7-point range until
three straight Elida kills pulled the
Dogs within 23-20. Dunlap, however, then pushed one deep into the
corner to put Van Wert within one
point of the match. A long Elida kill
attempt ended it.
Coach Smith was pleased with
her make-shift lineup. They played
well tonight, she said. In the second game, we let them get back in
the game. We kind of quit talking,
but the rest of the night they played
really well together.
Leading the Bulldogs were
Aubrey Williams (10 digs, 9 kills),
Kamryn Martinez (22 digs), Katelyn
Sumption (6 kills), Erin Bowman (9
assists, 10 digs) and Katie Hawk
(16 assists, 8 digs).
The Van Wert junior varsity
improved to 7-3 after squeaking out
a 25-22, 25-20 win.

Coach Dammeyer said for the most part, we played right with
St. Henry. We challenged them but we had moments of missed
serves, serve receive and unforced errors that caused us to give

The next match for the Blue Jays (5-8, 0-5 MAC) will be a

The second game opened

with the Lady Lancers still
controlling the momentum.
The visitors stormed out to
a 10-7 lead on a Teman kill.
Crestview chipped away
throughout the first half of
the set, until a Trigg kill tied
things at 14 and Hartman gave
the Lady Knights their first
lead of the night with a kill,
15-14. The teams then fought
to ties at 18 and 19 before a
Lady Lancer error returned the
lead to Crestview for good.
Trigg picked up consecutive points to give Crestview
a 22-19 lead and forced a
Lincolnview timeout. Three
consecutive Lady Knight
points out of the break, however, sealed the Crestview win
and tied the match at one.
In game two we had the
lead and we just kind of fell
apart, described Evans. We
have to not be so relaxed on a
lead. When we have a lead we
have to keep going at them.
Crestview opened the
third set with a 7-0 lead,
with two points each from
Rager and Trigg. A Hartman
kill later in the match ran the
Lady Knight lead to eight,
20-12. Lincolnivew would
get no closer, however,

and Crestview pulled away

for the 25-15 win. Gregory
explained that her team had
to make an adjustment due
to Lincolnviews good net
defense. The Knights eased up
on their shots and tried to tip
the ball over the first line.
We went to tip-mode, she
said. That was tough for the
girls, but I told them until
(Lincolnview) starts digging
it, thats what were going to
do. Until they make an adjustment, a kill is a kill.
Evans also noted how well
the Lady Lancer blockers
played. Courtney Trigg, we
expected her to be big at the
net and I thought we defended
her well. Our blockers were
doing a good job of getting a
hand on the ball and slowing
it down for the defense.
The change of pace worked
for Crestview, and continued
into the fourth set as well.
Despite the teams opening to
ties at six, Lady Lancer errors
helped Crestview open up a
15-11 lead. The lead turned
into 22-14 after an ace from
Crestview junior setter Brady
Guest. Lincolnview only
scored one more time before
junior outside hitter Claire
Zaleski drove home a kill to
end the set, 25-15, and the
match, 3-1.

he apparently has a girlfriend.
She works in his office and is

Dad found out I broke into

Instead of apologizing for

me I need to think about what
Im doing because I could be

also made sure to tell me that
by breaking into his iPad, I
had broken the law.
I think I should tell my

DEAR
ABBY:
My
husband, Evan, and my
mother do not get along. It
began when our second child
was born.
Mom came to help out, and
she and Evan engaged in tense
conversations
concerning
politics and religion. I asked
them to please not talk about
such things with each other,
but they didnt listen. Two
days after my arrival home
with the baby, they had a huge
argument and Mom walked
out. She has never returned to
our home.
Since then, I have never had
a holiday with my parents,
although I do travel once or
twice a year with the kids
to see them. Mom and Evan
did come to an understanding
when our third child was
born, but that, too, ended in
separation six months later.
I have tried asking them
both to apologize or talk with

Q: As a kid, I
enjoyed Fizzies, a
popular fruit-flavored
drink
made
by
dropping a tablet into
a glass of water. When
was it developed? -D.M.C., Perry, Ga.
A: Oh my, a trip
down memory lane!
Fizzies were invented
by Emerson Drug Co.
while it was working
on a product similar
to Bromo-Seltzer. In
1957, the company
introduced the tablets
to a limited number
of supermarkets. By
1962, Fizzies were
available across the
nation,
exceeding
Kool-Aid in sales
and popularity. The

effervescent tablets
were made in grape,
cherry, orange, punch,
berry,
lemon-lime
and root beer flavors
-- eight tablets cost 19
cents. Unfortunately,
Fizzies
contained
cyclamate,
which
was banned by the
Food
and
Drug
Administration
in
1968. The tablets
were taken off the
market.
In 1995, Fizzies
were
reintroduced
with
a
new
formula containing
NutraSweet, but they
did not last long. The
company went out
of business the next
year. Fizzies came

MIDDLE IN COLORADO
DEAR IN THE MIDDLE:
From where I sit, youre not
in the middle -- your husband
and your mother are on the
OUTS. Much as you might
wish differently, the only
people who can fix this are
the two of them. If they were
more mature, they would, in
the name of family harmony,
agree to disagree.
Until they reorganize their
priorities, you have no choice
but to create your own family
during holidays by getting
together and celebrating with
friends or other relatives if
they are close by.

The National Association of State Workforce Agencies

(NASWA) testified before the House Ways and Means
Committee that too many conditions had been imposed
on the waiver process.
As a result, not a single state has successfully applied
for a waiver since it was enacted into law in 2012. This
legislation fixes the broken waiver system by:
Extending the waiver authority two years through
Dec. 31, 2017;
Clarifying and simplifying application requirements;
Providing additional flexibility to those states with
existing innovative programs;
Establishing important due process for demonstration projects;
Shifting the responsibility of program evaluation
to the federal government instead of keeping it with the
states who have limited resources to handle the process;
Providing some additional administrative support
for states.
U.S. Representatives Jim Renacci (R-OH-16) and John
Carney (D-DE) have introduced similar legislation in the
U.S. House of Representatives called the Flexibility to
Promote Reemployment Act.

Trivia

Answers to Thursdays questions:

The last smoke ring was blown from a cigarette billboard in Times Square on Sept. 13, 1977. Like its predecessors for much of the 20th century, it blew about 1,000
rings a day. A steam-producing box, located behind the
head of the man in the sign, crated the rings.
The first cartoon shown in U.S. movie theaters with a
regular feature was Gertie the Dinosaur, in 1909. Gertie
was created by New York Journal cartoonist Winsor
McKay.
