Indo-Fijians Satisfied With Fijifirst

Many
Indo-Fijians,
traditional
supporters of the National Federation
Party and the Fiji Labour Party, are
joining FijiFirst in large numbers.
Some have publicly declared their
change of allegiance from NFP and
FLP.
The majority want to keep a low profile
because of what they describe as a
possible backlash.
It can be nasty. The word will go
around and you can become a target
of verbal harassment and vilification,
said one Indo-Fijian.
We will go along with them (old party)
but on the day of polling, we will vote
FijiFirst.
These are the reasons for the swing to
FijiFirst:
- FijiFirst and its leader Voreqe
Bainimarama will provide security and
stability. He has proved himself in the
last eight years. Security and stability
are big items for Indo-Fijians.
They are still reminded of what happened
in the 1987 and 2000 political upheavals
where they became victims of racial
and religious attacks. Mr Bainimarama
offers them protection from racial and
religious bigotry and extremism.
- Equal citizenry gives Indo-Fijians
equality and hope. They are no longer
second class citizens and now enjoy
equal opportunities.
- Indo-Fijians are now called Fijians.

The common name gives them a sense

of identity and belonging. Its what
some of their forbearers fought for but
never saw it to fruition. Although they
belong to opposite camps, they salute
Mr Bainimarama for fulfilling a dream
for them.
They are disillusioned by their parties
for their failure to address the issue in
a definitive way. They do not like the
political posturing that has prevented
their parties from taking a firm

position. To them, there is only position

endorse the common identity and
support Fijian as the common name.
Instead their parties have been sitting
on the fence.
- Secular state. It gives Indo-Fijians
the freedom to practise their religion.
At the State level there is no dominant
religion. They believe that this
provision in the Constitution promotes
religious unity and tolerance.
- The Constitution protects the rights of

families, plus the $10 million grant for
iTaukei landowners underscore this
commitment.
- FijiFirsts policies are nondiscriminatory,
forward-looking,
progressive and transformative. They
are a huge change from the old ways
of doing things. The new electoral
system is revolutionary. The one
national constituency and one-personone-vote system will foster national
unity and development cohesion. It
will eliminate inter-provincialism and
narrow sectional interests.
- The Preamble of the Constitution
recognises the descendants of the

indentured labourers from British India

and the Pacific Islands, their culture,
customs, traditions and language. It
also recognises the descendants of
the settlers and immigrants to Fiji,
their culture, customs, traditions and
language. Indo-Fijians are represented
in these two categories.
- Free education, free bus fare for
students are a big relief for many IndoFijians in the lower socio-economic
group.
FijiFirst has everything that we want.
They have the right policies. But we are
in the wrong party, said another IndoFijian who declined to be identified for
fear of reprisals.

12 Year Old Girls Death

Treated As Murder

Police are now treating the case of a 12

year of girl found dead inside her home
as alleged murder.
The incident is understood to have
happened last Sunday in Samabula.
The alleged murder happened here in
the quiet Totoya Street in Samabula.
Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro
says it was only after the 12 year old
students post mortem results were
examined, that led police to re-classify
the case as murder.
The deceased according to police
was initially discovered by her father
between 8am and 9am.

It has since been established that the

girl was alone at home at the time
while her father had gone for a haircut
and her mother had attended a church
service.
The 12 year olds motionless body

returned.
He had rushed her to the Colonial
War Memorial Hospital but she was
pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police are now in the process of
gathering more information to try
and determine the circumstances
surrounding the 12 year old death.

FNPF Contributions
Increase

THE Fiji National Provident Fund

has recorded about $375.7million for
members' contribution at the end of the
2014 financial year.
According to the fund, this was an
increase of 9.5 per cent from last year's
collection of $343.1m.
FNPF CEO Aisake Taito attributed
the increase to stronger compliance in
streamlined and strengthened collection
processes, vigilant monitoring of employer
compliance with requirements and wider
coverage in routine and random inspection
to outer islands and remote areas.
"We are confident that a stronger FNPF
is emerging as we continue to manage
challenges and create the value to our
members," Mr Taito said.
He said pension contribution was $8m
from new pensioners in 2014 compared
with $7.7m last year.
For net assets, he said, it had increased
to $4.5b from $4.2b last year.
"Investment income was $258m,
and achieved against a challenging
investment environment where interest

rates continued to reflect the high

liquidity and tough competition for
limited investment opportunities.
"We distributed $175m to members
compared with $156m in 2013. This
has continued to increase since 2011,
from 5 per cent to 5.75 per cent in
2014."
He said the pension business continued
to show positive results.
"1404 pensioners earning between $5
to $99 a month, before the reform, are
now getting $100, hence a relieve from
the so-called poverty situation they
were once in.
"2919 members continued with their
existing pension, and were unaffected."
He said 1828 pensioners incurred a
reduction and were given an option
to take a lump sum of their original
pensionable amount or join new
sustainable, age-based pension product
with a top-up offer.
He said majority of the pensioners
were not affected by the change as their
monthly payment remained the same.

Pacific Fishing Boasts

$1.9M Profit

Pacific Fishing Company Limited has

made a recovery posting profit before
tax of $1.9 million after three years of
operating on a loss.
The results reflect the financial year
ending December 2013 announced
during the cannery companys annual
general meeting at its Laucala Beach
office.
The companys last profit post was
in 2009 with $2.7 million. In 2010 it
posted $1.4 million loss and then $3.4
million in 2011. In 2012, it posted a
loss of $1.68 million. The hefty loss
in 2011 was mainly due to its shut
down for six months because of noncompliance issues.
PAFCO chairman, Ikbal Jannif said
the recovery was due to efficient
management and a more focused
performance by the board and the
management team.
Its a very pleasing result from the
point of view of the management and
the point of view of the board, Mr
Jannif said.
The meeting held behind closed doors
included shareholders and company
staff members. The Governmentowned tuna cannerys main operations
are in Levuka, Ovalau.
The main agenda was the appointment
of the board and announcement of
financials of the company and the way
forward, Mr Jannif highlighted.
Board members are chairman, Mr
Jannif, and directors, Bupendra Kumar
and Ratu Etonia Seru.
One of the challenges in the industry
is the slowdown of tuna in the first half
of the year. Its not only for PAFCO.

This is an international trend, Mr

Jannif said.
This then puts pressure on PAFCO as
a processing plant in the second half of
the year when we have to catch up with
all production weve lost in first half.
The challenge for PAFCO now is
to make sure that we have sufficient
storage facility to allow us to purchase
fish.
Plans for upgrade and proposals
and moving forward are now being
formulated and would be made public
in due time.
Also, shareholders do not get dividend
as this would be used to cater for the
immediate needs of the company in
terms of repair and other benefits of
efficiencies, Mr Jannif added.
Some of it (profit) would be utilised
in terms of the upgrade and we have
prepared proposals on the way forward
and the proposals are being discussed
at the moment, Mr Jannif said.
Mr Jannif said the financials and
the positive outlook of the company
further strengthens its relationship with
American-based cannery and sea food
processor, Bumble Bee LLC.
As far as union issues were concerned,
Mr Jannif said there was no issues
highlighted as workers were given fair
wages and more than was mandated in
labour laws.
He added, the company was here to stay
and would not shut down, drowning
some views that it was on the verge of
shutting down during it financial loss
period.
The company balance sheet value is
$29.5 million.

SODELPA Losses Opportunity

SODELPA leader Ro Teimumu 4
Kepa
refusing a nationally televised debate
with him has disappointed Voreqe
Bainimarama.
Is she frightened? the FijiFirst leader
and Prime Minister asked in Savusavu.
The SODELPA leader should be at
the live FBC TV telecast to help clear
the air about lies he said SODELPA is
telling people, he said.
Mr Bainimarama added: She now
misses a golden opportunity to sit and
talk about her party to the people and
also listen to what FijiFirst has.
He said the whole nation was looking
forward to the live debate on FBC TVs
4 The Record. Ro Teimumu should tell
the nation the truth of her pulling out,
he said.
What is SODELPA hiding from the
public? the Prime Minister asked.
He said he wanted to ask Ro Teimumu why
his name and the name of the AttorneyGeneral, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, were
used in the SODELPA manifesto.
SODELPA, he said, wanted to instill
the mentality that iTaukei were weak
simply to manipulate them and divide
the nation.
The truth is that we dont need
protection. We are the protectors.
Among other things, we go out into the
world as UN Peacekeepers to protect

others.
On the chiefs, Mr Bainimarama said
they had their place in the iTaukei
community and all should respect the
chiefly system.
Also, more information is today
emerging about why Ro Teimumu
refused to participate in the live TV
debate despite earlier challenging Mr 4
Bainimarama to this.
FBC TV 4 The Record producer Edwin

she would. But then mails from her
communications director Jese Sikivou

US Voters Unaware Of
One-Choice System
A Fijian voter in the United States
said two of her colleagues jointly
marked about 200 candidates on their
ballot papers, thinking Fiji was still
using the old preferential and multiconstituency-based election system.
They were later advised they should
only select one, but by that time they
had already sealed their ballot papers
for sending back to Fiji.
The Fijian Elections Office has
repeatedly advised voters leading up to
the election, that a voter chooses only
one candidate in this election.
In line with this especially ahead of
polling on September 17, the FEO
deployed 17 teams of voter educators
to polling areas around the country
to distribute the voter instruction
booklets.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed

Saneem have tasked the teams to
educate voters through the booklets
as he wants every voting public gets a
copy of the booklet.
This approach that we are undertaking
is also a final sweep of the polling areas
to assist people with information on
how to correctly mark the ballot paper
and to ensure that people have visuals
of the National Candidates List before
the polls, Saneem said.
Our teams will answer any elections
related questions and will also hand out
the Voter Information Guides.
We want to ensure that voters know
how to mark the ballot paper correctly
and we believe this face to face
approach will assist all registered
voters."

Fiji Link Moves To New

Domestic Terminal

Fiji Link, Fiji Airways domestic

subsidiary, has relocated its domestic
operations to a new terminal location
at the Nadi International Airport.
The move is in line with the redesign
and modernisation of the Nadi
International Airport into a world-class
experience.
The terminal is designed to enable
improved passenger convenience
with extra check-in counters, quick
turnaround of aircraft, and other
amenities.
Fiji Airways group managing director/
chief executive, Stefan Pichler, said:
We are appreciative of Airports Fiji
Limiteds plans to create a world class
international airport.
We are happy to move Fiji Links
operations into a new space. Were
confident the move is practical and

convenient for both our customers and

staff.
Mr Pichler said the change will allow
them to provide exceptional customer
service as they now have a dedicated
space thats allocated for their
customers only.
Weve had exciting progresses this
year with Fiji Link, he said.
We continue to expand our fleet
with our new ATR 42-600 arriving in
September, destination network and
customer base.
We believe the move to the new
terminal will fit in well with our own
growth plans.
Fiji Link customers will not miss
the terminal, which is a standalone

compensation for three of its fighters
it says were killed in a shootout with
U.N. officers.

investigating a potential case of
exploitation in which Fijians lured to
work in Bay kiwifruit orchards were
alleged to have received vastly inferior
pay and living conditions than what
had been promised.
The case was uncovered by a Tauranga
woman who became aware of their
plight at a community gathering and
ended up taking her concerns to New
Zealand First's Tauranga candidate
Clayton Mitchell and area president
Edwin Perry.
Several of the Fijians subsequently
agreed to talk with Immigration New
Zealand about what had happened
to them in the five to six weeks they
worked in the Western Bay.
The department's lead communications
adviser Marc Piercey confirmed
to the Bay of Plenty Times it was
investigating a potential case of
exploitation involving Fijian workers.
"The New Zealand Police and the
Labour Inspectorate are also involved
but as the investigation is ongoing,
Immigration New Zealand is unable
to make any further comment at this
stage."
Mr Mitchell said the Fijians walked
into his office two weeks ago to tell
their story which began when they
answered an advertisement in the Fiji
Sun offering orchard work in New
Zealand. They were promised they
could earn $15 to $17 per hour but
claim to have ended up with $190 in
their hand after six weeks work.
He said they returned home much
poorer and wiser for the experience.
Each worker claims to have paid out
Fiji$4250 ($2823) in fees and charges
to get them to Tauranga, with the
bulk of the money paid to one agent including $2000 to arrange visas and
$1080 for air fares.
Mr Mitchell said some took out loans
against their cars and homes in order
to come to what they thought would
be a land of milk and honey and First
World wages. Instead of the promised

accommodation of one bedroom per

person, eight Fijians say they ended
up paying $80 each out of their wages
each week to sleep on a garage floor.
No bedding was provided as promised
and they ended up seeking help from
the Salvation Army, he said.
Mr Mitchell said the visas never
arrived. He said he believed they had
been duped.
He said the vulnerability of the Fijians
showed that New Zealand's systems
were less than watertight and open to
abuse.
"It is going on right under our noses.
It's Third World conditions in a First
World country."
Mr Mitchell was unsure of how many
people were lured to New Zealand by
the scheme, saying he only knew about
the eight Fijians who say they slept on
the garage floor.
New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers
president Neil Trebilco said he was
aware that these employment practices
went on but it was not widespread.
Growers were in an extremely difficult
situation because their relationship
was with the contractor and not the
people working the orchard. Making
sure growers received withholding tax
certificates from contractors would
improve some compliance but would
not stop workers being underpaid or
used illegally, he said.
"It is an issue we are trying to grapple
with."
Mr Trebilco said growers were in
the early stages of a project with the
Ministry of Business Innovation and
Employment to improve compliance.
Tauranga Regional Ethnic Council past
President Ewa Fenn said the problem
with workers caught up in this sort
of situation was that they were often
unsophisticated and fearful that someone
would take away their passports.
The Bay of Plenty Times contacted the
kiwifruit contractor identified by the
Fijians as their employer but he denied
being the person under investigation
for the employment of Fijian workers.

16,000 Additional Fijian

Capacity By Air New Zealand

Auckland Airport has welcomed the

announcement by Air New Zealand
that it will increase its Fijian route
capacity next year in response to
growing demand.
The airline announced it will be flying
a daily wide-body Boeing 777 service
from May to October 2015.
8 Charles Spillane, Auckland Airports
acting general manager aeronautical
commercial, said: The announcement
8 by Air New Zealand is great news.
It results in a 12 per cent increase
in its capacity on the route - thats an
additional 16,000 seats.

Obviously, Fiji is a very popular

destination for Kiwis and the addition
of Air New Zealands business class
lie-flat product on this route will
provide travellers with an even greater
selection of seat options.
The airline has also refined its
scheduled flight times to provide
passengers with improved connectivity
to the Air New Zealand domestic
network.
Auckland Airport congratulates Air
New Zealand on the announcement,
which is a vote of strong confidence in
its Auckland-Nadi operations.

Lamb & Goat Meat Cost

THE consumer watchdog has raised
concerns about the high cost of meat
such as lamb shank, lamb neck and
imported goat meat.
According to the Consumer Council
of Fiji, consumers had also expressed
disappointment at the exorbitant cost of
a bundle of fresh fish sold at roadside
markets.
Council CEO Premila Kumar said they
received phone calls from pensioners
and housewives who could no longer
afford to pay for a kg of lamb meat,
which costs about $17-$19 per kg.
"We have had social welfare food

voucher recipients and pensioners,

who find it difficult to include chicken,
forget about lamb in their shopping
basket.
"Their initial focus is on essential basic
food items and what can be bought
under the food voucher."
She said landed prices for those
imported meat products were dictated
by source markets such as New Zealand
and Australia.
"The supply in Australia and NZ
depends on supply and demand as well.
Prices increase when the demand goes
up and the supply is limited," she said.

Around 2000 landowners and workers

of Fiji Pine Limited Group received
a total of $360,000 of lease security
bonus payment cheques from Prime
Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
This was the second payment of
bonuses this year, the first in February
for $320,000.
Mr
Bainimarama
lauded
the
strengthening of the relationship
between Fiji Pine Limited and its
landowners.
He said governments policies in
reducing the TLTB poundage on
ground rent from 25 per cent to 10
per cent meant more was going in the
pockets of the landowners.
Furthermore, stumpage payments that
are peculiar to Fiji Pine leases were in
the past attracting 25 per cent TLTB
poundage.
This now does not attract deductions
made possible through the directive of
the PM as the chairman of TLTB. This
also means more money in the pocket
of landowners.
Fiji Pine Limited Group executive
chairman Faiz Khan said the key
stakeholders in the pine industry were
its landowners, its workers and the
State being the Government.
Due to restructure of its businesses
revenue and cost structures, landowners
were getting a far greater share of
returns, he said.
The satisfaction of landowners
manifested itself by the renewal of
18,200 hectares of expiring leases
since 2012 through mutual consent of

landowners.
Landowners who were disgruntled
with returns in the past refused to
renew leases for over a decade between
2000 to 2011.
Mr Khan said all the business
improvement was made possible
through the hard work of its workers
who tirelessly worked under principles
of cost efficiency and productivity.
The working conditions of workers
was continually being improved, he
said.
This is with higher pay, better benefits,
free meals, cashing of unused sick
leave at time and half rates, up-skilling
of unskilled workers, and this year
they will receive $500 bonus before
Christmas.
They deserve every bit of it as in my
opinion they are one of the best group
of workers, if not the best.
Unwanted elements
Mr Khan said they had to fight against
certain unwanted elements such as
certain
unionists-turned-politicians
lobbying to get Fiji Pines forest
certification cancelled.
The forest certification allows easier
access of its wood chip into Japan, Mr
Khan said.
If we lose our certification, our
wood chip export will be reduced
and consequently our workers and
landowners will suffer.
He said it was annoying to see people
saying they are fighting for workers
rights yet doing things that will affect
these workers.

Australia Doing Everything Possible For Release Of 45

Fijian Peacekeepers: Julie Bishop

Australia is offering every possible

assistance to Fiji in efforts to help secure
the safe release of 45 captured United
Nations peacekeepers, according to
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.
The Fijian soldiers serving with the
United Nations on the Golan Heights
were captured a week and a half ago
by an Al Qaeda affiliated Syrian rebel
group, the Al Nusra Front.
Ms Bishop told Pacific Beat Australia
is doing all it can to help Fiji.
"Australia has certainly been very
involved in assisting Fiji in providing
our support, including sharing our
intelligence resources," she said.
"We utterly condemn the continued
detention of the 45 Fijian peacekeepers.

"They were serving with the United

Nations, and as a member of the United
Nations Security Council, Australia
has demanded their unconditional and
immediate release."
Ms Bishop said she has spoken to Fijian
Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama
and Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke
Kubuabola to reassure them of
Australia's continued support.
"I spoke with Fiji Foreign Minister
Kubuabola on Saturday evening and
again Tuesday morning as he was
on his way to the Middle East," she
said.
"We are certainly offering to provide
whatever support Fiji needs at this very
difficult time."

Poll Shows Drop In Support Hawaii Interisland Airline

For Fiji First Party
Appoints David Pflieger As
President And CEO

Support for Fiji's interim prime minister

Rear-Admiral Frank Bainimarama has
slipped, according to the final poll
before the September 17 election.
The Tebbutt-Times poll, conducted
from September 1 to 4, asked 1,137
respondents who they preferred to see
as the prime minister if the election
was held tomorrow.
It showed 49 per cent of people
chose Rear-Admiral Bainimarama as
preferred prime minister, down from
60 per cent in a poll held in August,
The Fiji Times reported.
The leader of the mainly indigenous
i-Taukei Social Democratic Liberal
Party (SODELPA), Roko Tui Dreketi
Ro Teimumu Kepa, was in second
place with 20 per cent of respondents
choosing him as preferred prime
minister, The Fiji Times reported, up
from 17 per cent in the previous poll.
If those results were translated into
votes on election day, it would mean
Rear-Admiral Bainimarama would
have to form a coalition with another
party to be able to have a majority in
parliament.
Fiji academic Professor Brij Lal from
the Australian National University has
told Pacific Beat, while the poll results
were not unexpected, Rear-Admiral
Bainimarama had made it clear he
does not want to be part of a coalition
government.
"He's... made it very clear that he
doesn't want a coalition government
and on the present polls it would seem
very clear that the two largest parties
in parliament will be SODELPA, the

Fijian party, and Frank Bainimarama's

party, Fiji First," he said.
"He will have to work with either
SODELPA or with other minor parties
which might win some seats.
"So a coalition government is very
much on the cards and I think that he'll
have to simply get used to the idea of
having to negotiate and compromise
so that he can govern if he wins the
elections."
The September 17 poll will be the first
in Fiji since the 2006 military coup
in which Rear-Admiral Bainimarama
seized power.
Opposition parties have questioned
whether the election will be free and
fair, with accusations of intimidation
and a lack of media coverage in the
lead up to the poll.
Australia is co-leading a Multinational
Observer Group including Israel, South
Africa, Brazil, Russia, Turkey, Japan,
New Zealand, Korea, Iran and the UK,
to ensure the polls proceed fairly.
Professor Lal said the tense relationship
between the two parties could make it
difficult for them to govern together
should a result require a coalition to be
formed.
"There's a lot of bad blood, certainly
between SODELPA and Fiji First, and I
think the issues here go deep," he said.
"The gulf is huge, and it will require
an enormous amount of patience and
understanding and negotiation for
these two parties to work together, and
it will be a very interesting challenge."
Rear-Admiral Bainimarama has said he
will accept the results of the election.

Central Division Record High

Voter Turnout

The central division has recorded a

high voter turnout of over 84 percent at
pre-poll stations.
According to the Fijian Elections
Office,
voters
reported
easy
accessibility to the polling stations
as well as having received help from
polling officials.
Over 10,270 people voted at various
polling stations in the central division.
The
Supervisor
of
Elections
Mohammend Saneem said the
statistics are very encouraging and is
an indication of peoples willingness to

make their votes count.

Meanwhile, 15 National Candidates
list box billboards have been placed
at central locations in 15 towns and
centers around the country.
The billboards contain the full list
of names, photographs and 3 digit
numbers for all candidates standing in
the 2014 General Elections.
Saneem says the idea is to allow the
public to get familiar with the list of
247 candidates and their numbers.
The box billboards will remain at the
centers up until 18th September.

Better Outcome: Firstfirst

FijiFirst supporters came in their

hundreds to support the partys
manifesto at Nukuloa College in Ba,
on Monday night.
Sixty-year-old Mohammed Isaaq said
that he had been a strong supporter of
FijiFirst because he believed in their
policies.
I believe in their policies, their
manifesto is the best compared to the
other parties, it will be sustainable for
the country to move forward, he said.
Also present at the campaign, 57 year
old Pradeep Kumar travelled from
Balevuto to the venue just to hear the
manifesto.
So far I am happy with the education
system for the children and the water

system proposed in their manifesto.

Many parties have made false promises
and I have seen them come and go with
no progress in developments, he said.
Meanwhile, the partys general
secretary, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
explained the electoral system and
how it would fare against other party
promises.
The electoral system suited the needs
of every party and that it is an equal
and fair system.
If FijiFirst comes into power expect
bigger and better things to come, in
particular the free water scheme which
will benefit every one of you, he said.
More than 300 people attended the
campaign at Nukuloa College in Ba.

For the past 51 years the National

Federation Party has respected the

Korea Offers Fiji Disaster

Management Training

Korea has offered Fiji three places

for a training workshop to be held in
November this year as part of capacity
building for the nations disaster
management.
The training will provide technical
expertise for Fiji in attaining data and
developing its own geo portal.
The training, scheduled to take place
in Korea, will involve Fijian disaster
management officers learning how to
design and build Fijis first ever geo
portal a website which uses space
technology in reducing the impacts of
natural disasters.
Korea has developed a new project
proposal on building geospatial
information system in the Pacific region
and will host a training programme in
partnership with the United Nations
Economic and Social Commission for
Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).
We are inviting three Fiji government
officials to the training programme
for three weeks which will be held
in Korea in November, said Korean
ambassador to Fiji Seong in KIM.
The announcement was made at a
three day workshop which began in
Nadi and is attended by the disaster
management officers from around the
country.
Mr KIM said relationship between
the two countries strengthened the cooperative partnerships including the
field of science and technology over
the last few years.
This underpins the strong relations

between our two countries and will

be further enhanced through our
collaboration in the field of disaster
risk management, he said.
The in depth training undertaken by
the Fijian Government will contribute
to the two countries partnership in the
field of science and technology and
geospatial information system through
enhanced capacity knowledge of space
technology applications.
Through the training, the two countries
will become an important cornerstone
to foster a group of specialists in
Fiji to help promote Fijis disaster
risk management and sustainable
development in the future.
National Disaster Management Office
(NDMO) director Manasa Tagicakibau
welcomed the offer by the Korean
Government saying it will greatly
assist Fiji in disaster risk management.
There is no doubt that space
technology and space technology
applications allow us to manage
disaster impacts more effectively
by monitoring the development of
disasters and the impacts they have,
Mr Tagicakibau said.
More
generally
these
space
technology applications can help in
overcoming geographical remoteness
and isolation and help link Pacific
island countries with each other
and with Asian neighbours. We are
grateful to the Korean Government
for its offer to include Fiji in this
training.

New Brew House Expects

Delay
The first pour of Paradise Beverages
new brew house, which is part of an
$18 million investment, has been
delayed slightly.
Major shareholder, Coca Cola Amatil,
has confirmed this.
Coca Cola Amatil spokesperson, Sally
Loane, said the delay has been as a
result of building issue.
The first brew is now expected to be
poured in mid-February 2015 instead
of December this year, she said.
But Ms Loane said the $18 million
renovation and rebuilding of Paradise
Beverages existing brewery is on track

for completion by mid-2015.

In terms of exports, Ms Loane said this
year had been about establishing their
brands in certain markets with solid
growth expected in 2015.
Export markets for Paradise Beverages
premium beers and spirits have been
established in Australia, New Zealand,
Canada and Japan with our first order
of rum dispatched for Hong Kong this
month, she said.
For new products in the alcohol space,
Ms Loane said Paradise Beverages has
a very exciting pipeline of innovative
new products.

You Can Still Vote If You

Have Lost Your Id Cards

The Fijian Elections Office confirmed

that voters who had lost their voter
registration cards could still vote.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem said these people could still
vote provided the voter produced
another valid ID card to the presiding
officers at the polling stations.
You can still vote if you have lost
your ID cards; simply produce another
ID and we will be able to verify your
details and allow you to vote, Mr
Saneem said.
The presiding officer will be able to
verify by asking you some questions
and will allow you to vote.
If your Voter ID has gone missing,

dont despair you can still vote, please

come to the polling stations and the
presiding officer will take you through
the process.
He reiterated that elections staff would
be offering assistance to voters who
needed help.
I encourage voters to take advantage
of the assistance and please do not wait
for the last minute; go early so that you
can cast your vote on time because
when you get there when pre-polling
closes we will not allow you to vote.
Mr Saneem said they had also learned
valuable lessons going into the prepolling which was going to be useful in
the September 17 election.

Tonnes Of Cane Processed

More than one million tonnes
of harvested sugarcane has been
processed, producing more than
100,000 tonnes of sugar so far.
This is a significant achievement for
our sugar industry compared to the
2013 harvesting season, says Sugar
Cane Growers Council chief executive
Sundresh Chetty.
Mr Chetty said this was achieved
through the hard work of the various
stakeholders involved such as the
Fiji Sugar Corporation, the council,
Government, growers, cane cutters and
lorry drivers.
The sugar make is very encouraging
with quality matured sugar cane
delivered to the mills, Mr Chetty said.
The tonnes cane to tonnes sugar
(TCTS) ratio stood at 8.6 last week,
a significant improvement from last
years TCTS at 9.7.
However, Mr Chetty said while supply
of sugarcane is not an issue this season,
but the increased number of burnt sugar
cane is a major issue.
There is excessive supply of burnt
sugar cane to the mills which is
clogging the system. More effort has to

be put in such as chemicals added to

derive sugar juice, he said.
Growers and cane cutters are facing
difficulties in harvesting burnt
sugarcane because they have a window
to seven days to transport their produce
to the four respective mills.
But Mr Chetty said stakeholders are
putting in their best efforts to help
these growers and cane cutters.
Mr Chetty believes a decrease in
indiscriminate cane fires could have
resulted in better TCTS ratio and more
sugar produced generating more revenue.
Dry spell
Despite some minor issues facing the
sugar industry, the council is urging
farmers to be prepared for the long dry
spell which has affected the upcoming
planting season.
We have noticed a long dry spell
over the past two months and there is
not much activity on the farms at the
moment, he said.
He said this has hindered farmers from
planting sugarcane for the next season.
Mr Chetty is urging farmers to retain
trash to help retain moisture in the soil
for the upcoming planting season.

Bainimarama Promises,
Delivers In North

The
Prime
Minister
Voreqe
Bainimarama delivered on another
of his Governments promises to
improve the livelihoods of people in
the Northern Division.
He was present during the opening of
the first section of the Buca Bay Road,
a key ingredient of the Governments
development plan for Vanua Levu.
To the people of the North I say:
examine for yourself the claims
by some would-be politicians that
nothing has been done for you and my
Governments Look North Policy is
all talk. Here we are today opening a
major piece of infrastructure that will
transform the lives of thousands of
Fijians, he said.
He said on the other side of the island,
his Government was also spending
$228-million dollars to build an all
weather highway from Nabouwalu to
Dreketi and all the way to Labasa.
Earlier in the year, the Government
completed a major extension of the
power grid to Dreketi via Seaqaqa.
A few weeks ago in Somosomo I also
launched a $15-million dollar project
to provide Fijians in Taveuni with
affordable electricity, he said.

He said thousands of ordinary

Fijians in the Northern Division had
benefited from Government training
programmes. Mr Bainimarama said
thousands of people had been given
help to start their businesses, build new
homes or had their cyclone damaged
homes repaired.
The sugar industry in the North, he said,
was being expanded, land was being
reclaimed for growing cane and they
intended to crush one million tonnes of
sugarcane a year in Labasa by 2020.
In Taveuni, coconut growers stand
to benefit from our programme to
revitalise the copra industry, to replace
senile trees with younger ones that
have higher yields. And for the first
time, Fiji is selling Virgin Coconut Oil
in Korea at $13 a bottle a new export
industry that promises to transform the
lives of many people in the North.
He said this was genuine achievement
real progress to benefit every Fijian in
the North and in the case of the export
industries, the economic welfare of
every person in the country.
All these, he said, had happened under
his Government, which did not make
false promises but delivered.

POLICE is calling on polling officials

to plan their schedules well and refrain
from rushing after a polling vehicle
veered off the Qelewaqa road in
Labasa.
Police
spokesman
Inspector
Atunaisa Sokomuri said the incident
happened at 7.30am after the team
travelling in the vehicle were
allegedly rushing towards Keka in
Cakaudrove.
Insp Sokomuri said the driver did
not sustain any injury while three
passengers were taken to Labasa
Hospital to be medically examined for
minor injuries.
"We are pleading with polling officers
and members of the public to refrain
from speeding," he said.
"In the case of our polling officers,

they need to plan and schedule their

travelling time well so that there is no
need for rushing.
"Speeding will only worsen the
situation and being late for polling is
nothing compared to losing peoples
lives because of failure to meet polling
schedules."
Insp Sokomuri said police in the
North were still waiting for a vehicle
examiner's official report before
concluding investigations.
"The majority of road accidents in the
country are caused from speeding and
we are again appealing to members of
the public to treasure lives and make
the wise decision.
"It will be good to end this pre-polling
period on a high note without losing
any life."

Percent Revenue Growth

Fiji Holdings Limited has announced

an 18 percent growth in consolidated
revenue.
This was for the financial year ending
June 30th, 2014.
FHL also confirmed its audited
consolidated group revenue at $272
million compared to $230 million last
year.
Consolidated pre-tax profit was $23.6
million reflecting a growth of 21
percent.
FHL chairman Iowane Naiveli says
these results reflects the hard work of
the management during challenging

times and they are optimistic of growth

in the years ahead.
FHL Group CEO Nouzab Fareed says
while they have done well, they still
have a few companies to run around.
Fareed adds that strategizing the

their next challenge.
RB Patel remains the biggest revenue

Fiji's military says 45 UN peacekeepers

captured in Syria's Golan Heights in
August will be released this week
"without preconditions".
The troops were seized by rebels from
the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front.
Brig Gen Mosese Tikoitoga said that
Fiji had been informed of the imminent
release of its soldiers by the UN
headquarters in New York.
But a government spokesman in Suva
denied the reports and said negotiations
were continuing.
"I don't think so... someone has
misinterpreted," Dan Gavidi told the
Agence France-Presse news agency when
asked about the reports from New York.
In his earlier statement, Gen Tikoitoga
did not give further details of the
expected release date or location.
He said that Fiji's actions in the Golan
Heights over the years "had not gone
unnoticed by the Syrian people" and
had helped contribute to the outcome.
Release demands
Syrian pro-government forces and
rebels have repeatedly clashed near
Quneitra in the Golan Heights region.
Rebel forces seized control of the
Quneitra crossing last Wednesday.

The al-Nusra Front has issued several

demands as a precondition for the
release of the Fijian soldiers, including
dropping the group from the UN's list
of terrorist organisations.
The group said they were seized
because the UN was "ignoring the daily
shedding of Muslims' blood in Syria"
and co-operating with government
forces to "facilitate its movement to
strike the vulnerable Muslims" in the
demilitarised zone.
Two groups of Filipino peacekeepers
were also surrounded in the same
attack in August but managed to escape
into Israel.
This is not the first time UN
Disengagement Observer Forces
(UNDOF) personnel have been
detained by rebel fighters in recent
years. Peacekeepers were detained
in March and May 2013, and were
subsequently released unharmed.
Israel seized most of the Golan Heights
in the closing stages of the 1967 SixDay War, and thwarted a Syrian
attempt to retake it in 1973. Both
countries signed an armistice in 1974,
after which Undof was put in place to
monitor the demilitarised zone.

As of August 22, the number of people

who receive food vouchers stood at
592, children assisted in the care and
protection program numbered 5504
and 10,839 benefits from the social
pension schemes.
Opening the Dorcas-Womens Leaders
Conference 2014 in Suva, Minister for
Women, Social Welfare and Poverty,
Dr Jiko Luveni says her ministry
will continue efforts to help the

disadvantaged.
She further encouraged the 150 plus
women in attendance to partner with
the ministry in its efforts to help the
disadvantaged particularly youths
given the difficulties and challenges
they face in modern time.
Dr Jiko also commended and
encouraged the women's group to
continue in the work to help people in
need.

September Snow Falls In

Calgary, Alberta

Calgary got an early dose of winter

Monday as drizzling rain turned into
big fluffy flakes of snow.
Environment Canada issued a snowfall
warning for the city Monday evening.
A cold front that brought rain to Calgary,
and other parts of southwestern Alberta
overnight, had even colder air behind
it that is producing accumulations of
snow.
"The first significant snowfall of the
season is occurring," said the national
weather agency on its website.
"General snowfall accumulations of
five centimetres are expected, however,

greater accumulations are possible

in some areas including higher
elevations. Snowfall accumulations
will vary significantly depending on
surface type and snowfall intensity.
Snow will taper off this evening in
Calgary and overnight in Pincher
Creek."
The heavy snow is also causing tree
branches to break, which created
power outage problems in some areas
around the city.
Blowing wet snow west and north of
the city is reducing visibility on the
highways in the area.

As snow continued to fall in parts of

Alberta Tuesday, The Weather Network
predicted near normal temperatures and
precipitation this fall for much of Canada.
British Columbia will continue to
experience above-normal temperatures,
but it's expected to be a typical autumn
for everyone else.
"Fall is the season where we usually
see the most dramatic temperature and
precipitation changes from month to
month as we transition towards winter,"
Chris Scott, chief meteorologist at

The Weather Network, said in a press

release.
As for the winter, El Nino conditions in
the Pacific Ocean might not necessarily
mean a warmer winter for Canadians.
"History tells us that a weak El Nino
centred more across the central Pacific
can produce colder than normal winters
across central and eastern Canada. The
possible weak El Nino developing for
this winter is one of the key factors
our forecast team is monitoring," Scott
said.

The CPA, in its sixth annual survey

of thousands of Canadian employees,
says it found more are living paycheque
to paycheque, most are saving less
than they should and even more are
falling further behind in meeting their
retirement goals.
The association said the survey found
that more than half of employees -- 51
per cent -- would find it difficult to
meet their financial obligations if their
paycheque were delayed by a single
week. That was up from an average of
49 per cent over the past three years.
For those aged 18 to 29, the number is
even higher -- 63 per cent report living
paycheque to paycheque.
Meanwhile, more than a quarter of
respondents -- 26 per cent -- said
they probably could not come up
with $2,000 over the next month if an
emergency expense arose.
And more than half reported saving just
five per cent or less of their paycheque
versus the 10 per cent recommended by
financial planning experts, while 79 per
cent expected to delay retirement until
age 60 or older, up from an average of
70 per cent over the past three years.
"The number one reason cited for

Pub Fined For Cutting Hours

Of Pregnant Server
The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has
ordered a Vancouver pub owner to pay
a former server thousands of dollars
after she was fired for being pregnant.
Stephanie Lipp was a server at Maverick's
Sports Lounge on Kingsway in Vancouver,
getting about four shifts a week, according
to documents from the hearing.
At the hearing, witnesses testified Lipp
was good at her job and she brought
in business for the first six months she
was there.
Then in March, 2013, the pub was sold
to Michael O'Connell, who changed
the name to Locker Room Pub.
At that time Lipp was six months

pregnant.
The pub's former manager testified
O'Connell told him he had "an issue
with the optics of having a pregnant
server working a in a bar," and directed
him to reduce her hours.
Lipp testified within two months her
shifts were reduced to one day a week,
and then none.
She considered herself constructively

"Yet despite upward adjustments in
perceptions of what constitutes an

employees are nowhere near reaching
their goals -- 75 per cent say they have
put aside less than a quarter of what
they will need in retirement up, from
an average of 73 per cent over the past
three years," the association said.
"And even among employees closer to
retirement (50 and older), a disturbing
47 per cent are still less than a quarter of
the way there, indicating a significant
retirement savings gap," added CPA
president and CEO Patrick Culhane.
Debt was a major concern of many in the
survey, with 39 per cent of employees
saying they felt overwhelmed by their
level of debt, up from an average of 32
per cent over what the association had
found in the past two years.
"In fact, 12 per cent of respondents this
year indicate they do not think they
will ever be debt free, and one-third of
respondents this year say their debt has
increased from last year."

from a wide range of industry sectors
across Canada was conducted between
June 17 and Aug. 1 by market research

Surrey RCMP is alerting the public and

requesting their assistance in identifying
a fraudster who has been recently preying
on elderly people and their generosity.
The scam involves the suspect advising
homeowners that his car has been
towed nearby and he needs money to
retrieve it. In some cases, the suspect
gains access to the residence during the
conversation and steals further items
from the homeowner. The suspect
will sometimes offer the homeowner
an item as collateral before a return
payment is made which turns out to be
stolen property. He has also returned
the next day in an apparent attempt
to re-pay the homeowner which
results in a further theft or robbery of
the homeowner. The suspect uses a
number of techniques in order to gain
the victims trust including alleging
knowledge of the victims family.
Between May and June 2014, police
responded to three complaints of a

similar nature, however Surrey RCMP

believe there may be additional
victims who have yet to come forward.
The frauds have all taken place in the
City Centre area of Surrey.
Despite a number of investigative steps
and persons of interest, police have
failed to identify and locate the suspect.
Officers are hoping that releasing this
information and surveillance photo will
help identify who he is. The suspect
is described as a South Asian male,
mid 20s, short black hair, clean cut,
approximately 6'0", slim to average
build. Officers believe the same
suspect may be responsible for a series
of similar frauds in the Richmond area.
Anyone who has further information or

Two Canadians Charged In

Suspected $500M US Fraud

Two Canadians have been charged in

the U.S. for their alleged roles in what
authorities call a $500-million tax
fraud and money laundering scheme.
The FBI unsealed an indictment
Wednesday against Brian De Wit, 45,
and Cem Can, also known as Jim Can,
44, both Canadian citizens living in
Belize City, Belize. Also charged are
four others an American, a citizen of
Belize and two citizens of the Bahamas
along with six corporations.
The group "devised not only a
fraudulent scheme but an elaborate
corporate structure based on lies and
deceit designed to enable U.S. citizens
to evade and circumvent our securities
and tax laws," U.S. Attorney Loretta
Lynch said in a statement.
And they "bragged about their scheme
to their clients," she said.
Since January 2009, the accused
conspirators masqueraded as financial

professionals, set up sham brokerage

firms, defrauded investors by falsifying
stock prices and trade volumes and
laundered money via offshore accounts
for their "corrupt" clients, the FBI said.
In one example, authorities allege De
Wit manipulated the stock of CannabisRx Inc., a company that leases space
to medical marijuana growers and
dispensers, to show a trading volume
of 189,800 shares on March 28 even
though the stock hadn't traded since
July 2, 2013, and ultimately drove
down the share price to 50 cents on
April 16, from a high of $13.77.
The accused face charges including
conspiracy to commit securities fraud,
tax fraud, and money laundering.
"The indictment of these defendants
should serve as a stern reminder that
such greed-based behaviour comes at
a cost," FBI assistant director George
Venizelos said in the statement.

Canada Family Class Immigration

Immigration to Canada through
Canadian Family Class Sponsorship
Canadian citizens and permanent
residents may sponsor close family
members for Canadian immigration.
Canada has one of the most generous
family reunification programs in the
developed world. The government is
committed to keeping families together
whenever possible, and prioritizes the
processing of sponsorship applications.
Spousal and Common-Law Partner
Sponsorship
The objective of the Family Class of
immigration is to reunite close family
members in Canada. The Family
Class allows Canadian citizens and
permanent residents to sponsor their
dependent children, parents and
grandparents, spouse, common-law, or
conjugal partners.
The Government of Canada strongly
supports keeping families together
whenever possible. As such, the
processing of Family Class applications
is given the highest priority at Canadian
Visa Offices.
The Spousal Sponsorship Category

The Spousal Sponsorship program

is a subsection of the Family Class
immigration category. Under this
program, a Canadian citizen or
permanent resident may sponsor a
spouse or common-law partner for
Canadian Permanent Residency.
Both the Canadian citizen or permanent
resident (also called the sponsor) and
the foreign national (the sponsored
person) must be approved by
Citizenship and Immigration Canada
(CIC) in order for the sponsored person
to receive a visa.
Spousal Sponsorship Requirements
In order to receive a visa through this
immigration program, the sponsor and
sponsored person must prove that their
relationship qualifies under one of
three categories:
Spouse
Common-law Partner
Conjugal Partner
NOTE: Canada recognizes same-sex
marriage, and same-sex partners may
be eligible to apply under any of the
above three categories, provided they
meet all eligibility requirements.

After Sponsorship
Permanent Residency granted under
the Spousal Sponsorship program
comes with some conditions.
The sponsor is financially responsible
for the person sponsored for 3 years
after the sponsored person becomes a
permanent resident.
Individuals who come to Canada as
spouses are banned from sponsoring a
spouse in turn for 5 years after receiving
Canadian Permanent Residency.
A two-year legitimate relationship
regulation applies to spouses/partners
who have been in a relationship for
two years or less and who have no
children in common with their sponsor
at the time of application submission.
Once in Canada, the sponsored person
must live with their spouse/partner
in a legitimate relationship for two
years, or face the possibility of having
their Permanent Residency revoked.
Exceptions will be made for sponsored
spouses or partners who are suffering
from abuse or neglect.
Parent
and
Grandparent
Sponsorship

Canadian citizens and permanent residents

may bring their parents and grandparents
to Canada through one of two popular
programs: Family Class sponsorship and/
or the Super Visa program.
Permanent Residency Sponsorship
Please Note: The cap of 5,000
applications for the Parent and
Grandparent Sponsorship Program
has been reached. Individuals
wishing to bring their parents and/or
grandparents to Canada may still do
so through the Super Visa Program.
The Family Class sponsorship program
includes a stream for parents and
grandparents of Canadian citizens and
permanent residents. A total of 5,000
parent and grandparent sponsorship
applications for review at this time.
Successful parents and grandparents
under this program will receive Canadian
Permanent Residency and be able to
apply for Canadian Citizenship three
years thereafter. To be eligible for Family
Class sponsorship, the sponsor in Canada
must meet the following requirements:

Foods That Make You Smarter

Certain foods are known to help improve memory and improve brain function. Surprised? Read on to know about five foods that experts say you must include
in your diet.
Oily fish

Leafy vegetables

A common problem that several people

face today is trying to recollect simple
everyday tasks what errands you
need to run, who you're supposed to
call or what you had for lunch. So
if you're among those who want to
improve your memory, go in for oily
fish. Experts say that omega-3 fatty
acids, which are found in fish like
sardines, salmon and mackerel, are
great for overall health and especially
the brain. Include a portion of oily fish
in your diet at least twice a week to
prevent memory loss.

While many of us tend to turn our

faces the other way when it comes to
eating our greens, but research says
that they're excellent for your brain.
Spinach and broccoli are high in
antioxidants like vitamin C and betacarotene, known to be healthy for the
body. They also contain folate, which
is known to improve how fast we take
in information and recall it.
Eggs
Packed with minerals and vitamins,
eggs are excellent brain food. Rich
in iron, iodine and vitamin B12, eggs

Combination: Eggs and Mango

Gives you: Firm skin
There's no need to apply several
products to get good, firm skin. Just
eat some eggs and mango, especially
now that the fruit is in season. Eggs
are naturally rich in amino acids that
are essential for formation of skinplumping collagen. And mango, which
is rich in Vitamin C, works with these
acids to boost collagen production.
This helps build back lost stores in the
body, which can significantly improve
the appearance of skin.
Do it right: To give a boost to your next
breakfast, pair an omelet with a cup of
fresh mango chunks, which supply nearly
an entire day's supply of Vitamin C.
Combination: Red Bell Peppers and
Black Beans
Gives you: Better Immunity
They look good at the veggie market
and are expensive. But here's a good
reason to buy them. You'll absorb more
immune-boosting plant iron by adding
in some red bell peppers on your plate.
Iron in black beans is hard for the body
to absorb, however, adding a dose
of Vitamin C-rich produce like red
peppers converts the iron into a type
that's easier for the body to use.
Do it right: There are great recipes
online that show you how to mix your
beans with red bell peppers and make

should form a regular part of your diet.

While iron creates red blood cells,
which carry oxygen to your brain,
keeping you alert, iodine is known to
improve problem-solving abilities.

Green tea
Rich in flavonoids (brain-boosting
chemicals), moderate consumption of
dark chocolate is known to improve
cognitive skills, say experts adding that
flavonoids also activate the formation
of new neurons in the brain so that new
memories can be formed and improve
blood flow to the brain.

Food Combos To Make You Lean

the meal a tasty one too.

Combination: Extra-Virgin Olive
Oil and Tomatoes
Gives you: Better protection from
diseases
Tomatoes boast of four major
carotenoids (alpha-carotene, betacarotene, lutein, and lycopene) besides
three potent antioxidants (betacarotene,
Vitamin E, and Vitamin C) which may
help fight cancer and heart disease. These
protective chemicals are better absorbed
with extra-virgin olive oil, which is high
in healthy monounsaturated fats.
Do it right: Leave the tomato skin on,
since it is packed with phytochemicals.
Extra-virgin olive oil is the least processed
form, so it contains the most beneficial
compounds. Store it away from heat and
light to prevent it from going rancid.
Combination: Broccoli and Tomatoes
Gives you: Protection against cancer
Both are individually known to have
cancer-fighting properties, but research
has shown that together they are the Hulk
of cancer-fighting foods. Scientists found
consuming tomato and broccoli at the
same time was more effective at slowing
the growth of cancerous prostate tumours
than eating either vegetable alone.
Do it right: Have one-and-a-half cups of
broccoli along with two and-a-half cups
of fresh tomato, with pizza or spaghetti.
Combination: Oatmeal and Strawberries

Did you know that your brain is made

up of almost 80% water? This means
you need to keep it adequately hydrated
so that it functions well. While drinking
the requisite eight glasses of water are
essential, you could also have a cup of
green tea daily. Researchers say that
green tea increases mental alertness
and improves memory while the
antioxidants found in it reduce the risk
of dementia.
Chocolate

Gives you: A healthier heart

Oats
contain
two
important
phytochemicals called avenanthramides
and phenolic acids, which are known to
work with Vitamin C to reduce harmful
effects of bad cholesterol and help prevent
plaque build-up that lead to heart attacks.
Do it right: Enjoy a half cup of sliced
strawberries with your morning bowl
of oatmeal.
Combination: Green Tea and Lemon
Gives you: A healthier heart
Green tea, a rich source of powerful
antioxidants called catechins, is known to
help improve the heart's health. However,
according to studies only about 20 per
cent of these compounds are absorbed by
the human body. Adding lemon juice to
green tea has been shown to increase the
catechins level to 80 per cent.
Do it right: After brewing yourself a
cup of green tea, squeeze in the juice
of one whole lemon.
Combination: Cinnamon and Whole
Grain Toast
Gives you: Extra energy and quicker
weight loss
Sprinkling cinnamon on your toast
may help keep your blood sugar at a
healthier level, which prevents dips in
your energy and spikes in your hunger
level. In a study published in the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,
cinnamon was found to slow the rate

of stomach emptying after meals and

reduce the rise in blood sugar after
meals to negate more bingeing later.
Do it right: Use whole grain bread,
trans-free margarine and a teaspoon of
cinnamon.
Combination: Garlic and Onions
Gives you: Full-body protection
Both these veggies contain a number of
organosulfur compounds and heart-healthy
plant chemicals that help keep arteries
free of plaque. Some of these compounds
have even been studied for their power to
detoxify carcinogens in the body.
Do it right: Most Indian cooking combines
the two, however if you are in the mood
for something else, the combination even
works for soups and sauces.
Combination: Green Tea and Black
Pepper
Gives you: A slimmer waistline
Forget crash dieting. After your next
meal sip a cup of green tea with a
little black pepper thrown in. The
combination boosts the absorption of
EGCG, a key antioxidant in tea tied
to calorie burning, by 130 per cent.
Experts say the compounds in green tea
can affect the hormones that regulate
hunger and fullness.
Do it right: Studies say as little as
a half-teaspoon of black pepper
can increase the absorption of tea's
beneficial compounds.

Two Indians Found Guilty

Of Rape In Australia

Two Indian men, accused of abducting

and raping a woman in Australia, were
found guilty of the crime Monday,
media reported.
Ajitpal Singh, 31, and Randhir Singh,
21, were Monday found guilty by an
Australian Capital Territory Supreme
Court jury on charges of sexual assault,
committing acts of indecency, unlawful
confinement, and abduction.
The court heard that Randhir Singh and
the victim had met via social media
application, Tango, Sep 25, 2013.
They swapped sexual messages and
agreed to meet at Kippax Fair Shopping
Centre the next day.
When the victim tried to back out of
the meeting after seeing another man
with Randhir, Ajitpal Singh threatened
her child and said he would show her
husband the messages.
Randhir then drove the victim to
Ajitpal Singh's flat. He forced her to
give him oral sex and unsuccessfully
tried to have sex with her on the way.

The woman said she pleaded with

Randhir to let her go, but he ignored
her and raped her in a bedroom of the
14th floor flat.
During the assault, a third man, Jaskaran
Sandu, 33, took two pictures of her.
Ajitpal Singh then used the pictures to
blackmail and rape her, the report said.
Crown prosecutor Margaret Jones said
the men had hatched a "calculated and
devious" plot to force the victim to
have sex with them.
Defence barristers, however, said the
sex had been consensual and their
clients denied threatening the victim.
The jurors found Randhir Singh not
guilty on one count of committing an
act of indecency on the victim.
Prosecutors also withdrew one charge
of committing an act of indecency
against Ajitpal Singh during the fiveday trial.
Both men face lengthy jail sentences
and are expected to be deported to
India upon release.

Chinese City Kills 5,000

Dogs To Control Rabies

Authorities have killed almost 5,000

dogs in one Chinese city after rabies
was blamed for the death of five people
as reported.
Municipal authorities in Baoshan, in
the southwestern province of Yunnan,
culled 4,900 dogs and vaccinated
100,000 in its anti-rabies campaign.
The report said that four people died
from rabies in August and one in July
following dog bites.
Rabies outbreaks had been relatively
rare in the past five years. In 2006, at
least 16 people died of the disease in
the eastern province of Shandong.
China often orders stray dogs to be
culled in an effort to prevent outbreaks

of rabies but, as dog ownership has

become more popular in affluent areas,
some animal activists have decried
the practice, calling for animals to be
vaccinated or sterilized to keep dog
numbers down.
According to the World Health
Organization, rabies is a virus that
spreads to human through close
contact from animals, usually a deep
bite or scratch. It spreads through the
central nervous system, leading to fatal
inflammation of the brain and spinal
cord.
Effective treatment with a course
of vaccines can prevent the onset of
symptoms and death.

The Pricey Business Of

Going To School

Pencils have been sharpened, lunch

boxes packed, now the bell is ringing.
Its back to school time. And for many
parents, this means reaching deep into
their pockets.
This year, shoppers in the U.S. will
spend more than $26.5 billion on
school items for nearly 50 million
children going to public schools. The
cost of kitting out a pupil has risen
rapidly by nearly 50% in just five
years, according to National Retail
Federation. In the UK, the annual
bill for items used by its 8.3 million
children at school will be more than $4
billion, Santander research shows.
The shopping spree makes the start of
a new school year one of the busiest
shopping periods for retailers, second
only to the winter holiday season.
The most expensive items on the
shopping list are electronic gadgets,
rapidly becoming essential items for
school kids.
Almost 60% of shoppers in the U.S.
plan to buy electronic items for their
children, while in the UK, 38% of

parents purchase new technology for

their kids, according to Bright House
retailer.
The NRF figures show American
parents spend on average $211 per
child, while you switch figures
show their British counterparts fork
out average $215 on each childs
electronics.
But school goods dont have to be
high tech to be expensive. Pens, bags,
books, lunch boxes and other essentials
add up to whopping $98 per a child in
the U.S. and slightly more modest $81
per youngster in the UK.
School uniforms and other clothing
items add up to $224 per child in the
U.S., and $142 in the UK. On top of
that, shoes cost on average $116 in the
U.S. and $86 in the UK.
But parents on both sides of the Atlantic
said they are trying to keep their back
to school spending in check. In the
U.S., 31% of families plan to spend less
overall and 34% said they were buying
generic products rather than big brands
to save money, according to the NRF.

New Kava Export Rules In

Vanuatu

Vanuatus Ministry of Agriculture

has launched a national awareness
campaign targeting kava production.
The campaign follows the decision to
overturn a ban that had been in place
since 2002 which stopped exports of
Kava and Kava related products to
Europe.
Vanuatu has more than 60 varieties
of kava but only 10 of these are
recommended for export.
The Agriculture Minister David Tosul
says kava is an important cash crop
for ni-Vanuatu and that the awareness
campaign is aimed at avoiding future
export bans. David Tosul says future
steps will include introducing a director

to train field staff, and ensuring security

checks on exports.
To preface the new measures, the
ministry has launched a national kava
awareness campaign.
The minister, David Tosul, says the
new measures include introducing a
director to train field staff and ensuring
security checks on exports.
There will be enforcement officers in
the islands inspecting all the ships,
and there will be an officer at the
wharf, checking all the kava coming
in from all the island. And also we
have to make sure that the quaranteen
people check every kava that is
exported.

Adelaide Father Jailed For Possum Faeces May Cause

Flesh-Eating Ulcers In Humans
Thrusting Finger

A man who injured his five-week-old

son by thrusting his finger down the
boy's throat to stop him crying has
been jailed by an Adelaide court.
Andrew Gordon Campbell, 28, pleaded
guilty to recklessly causing serious
harm and a separate charge of causing
harm.
The District Court heard Campbell
put his finger down the boy's throat in
May last year to stop him crying, but it
caused a life-threatening obstruction of
the airway.
The infant was taken to hospital where
staff also found he had a rib fracture
which had been caused by Campbell
about the same time.
The injured boy was unable to drink

fluids for nine days.

Judge Paul Cuthbertson said the
offender had a background of similar
behaviour, low intellectual functioning
and had been overwhelmed about
caring for his first child.
He said Campbell had not intended
causing harm but the courts needed to
protect the weak and vulnerable.
The court heard Campbell had been
given an 18-month good behaviour
bond just six months earlier for
assaulting his brother and would have
to serve a month in prison for breaching
that bond.
Judge Cuthbertson jailed Campbell for
three years and four months and set a
non-parole period of two years.

Indian Woman Rescued

Over Dowry'

Gunja Devi's problems began soon after her marriage in 2010

Police in India have rescued a woman
whose husband's family allegedly held
her captive for three years because her
parents failed to pay enough dowry.
Gunja Devi, 25, was dressed in tattered
clothes and looked very scared, the
officer who rescued her said.
She was also denied contact with her
daughter who is now three.
Dowries have been illegal in India since
1961 but the practice is still widespread.
Thousands of women a year are killed
in dowry-related disputes.
Paying and accepting dowry is a
centuries-old South Asian tradition
where the bride's parents gift cash,
clothes and jewellery to the groom's
family.
Campaigners say the practice leaves
women vulnerable to domestic
violence and death.
Gunja Devi was allegedly detained by
her in-laws in Darbhanga district in the
eastern state of Bihar, police said.
She was rescued after her father Shyam
Sundar Singh complained to the police
that he had not been allowed to meet
his daughter for the past three years.
She has now been handed over to her
father, police said.
It is unclear why it took so long for
the alarm to be raised and for her to be

rescued.
Gunja Devi was married in 2010 and
her family has alleged that her torture
escalated when she gave birth to a girl,
in a culture where boys are valued.
According to reports in the local
media, the rescue operation took place
more than a week ago and photos at
the time showed Gunja Devi appearing
bedraggled from captivity - dressed in
tattered clothes with unkempt hair and
overgrown nails.
Her plight emerged in India's national
media only on Monday with reports
that she had been confined in a dark
and dingy bathroom and was given
very little to eat.
Police official Seema Kumari, who
carried out the rescue operation, did
not confirm whether Gunja Devi had
been locked in a bathroom.
"She immediately asked for her
three-year-old daughter and wept
inconsolably when the child could not
recognise her," the Press Trust of India
quoted the police official as saying.
A police complaint has been lodged
against Gunja Devi's husband and her
in-laws. They were taken into custody,
but later freed on bail, reports said.
They have not yet commented on the
allegations against them.

People are being warned to avoid

touching possum faeces because of
the risk of being exposed to a bacteria
linked to flesh-eating ulcers.
Infectious disease researchers at
Victoria's Barwon Health have found
that possums can carry the buruli
bacteria, which can cause major skin
ulcers in humans.
Barwon Health Associate Professor
Daniel O'Brien said possum faeces is
rich in the bacteria.
He told 774 ABC Melbourne there
needs to be more research into whether
contact with possum faeces is what
causes buruli ulcers, also known as
Bairnsdale ulcers, in humans.
"What we know in areas where we're
getting infections and possums are
infected is that their possum poo does
carry a large amount of the organism,"
he said.
"What we do think is a good public
health measure is to remove the
possum faeces from the area as much
as possible and wash your hands as
much as you can after that to minimise
potential exposures."
The infection starts as a painless or

itchy pimple, which then breaks down

to form an ulcer. If untreated, the ulcer
can spread.
Professor O'Brien said although
curable, the condition can be serious.
"The treatment is really quite difficult,"
he said.
"It often involves a long period of
antibiotics which can be difficult to
take and often involves surgery."
He said people have been infected in
Victoria's Gippsland region and the
Bellarine Peninsula, and most recently
in the Mornington Peninsula.
No infected possums have been
detected in metropolitan Melbourne.
Professor O'Brien said a better
understand
of
the
bacteria's
transmission is needed.
"The most important thing for me is that
we can prevent this infection, because
at the moment we can treat it but we
don't really know how to prevent it,"
he said.
"When you see young kids coming
into the clinic with really nasty ulcers
on their arm ... what we really need to
do is stop them getting it in the first
place."

the flight to Townsville.
The man was arrested by police in

Rescue Efforts Continue As Death Toll Rises

More than 205 people have died in
Pakistan, as the region experiences its
worst flooding in half a century.
Armed forces and civilian rescue teams
have mounted a massive operation to
retrieve thousands of people affected
by the floods.
Flash flooding and house collapses
from days of heavy rain have left
another 205 people dead and damaged
hundreds of villages and houses,
officials from Pakistan's national
disaster management agency said.
The natural disaster has only added
to the pressures facing embattled
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz
Shari, with a tide of anti-government
protests in the capital Islamabad led by
cricketer turned opposition politician
Imran Khan.
The protests have been going on for
months, but came to a head just over a
week ago when thousands of protesters
demanding the Prime Minister's
resignation threatened to storm his home.
It prompted the country's top generals
to hold an emergency meeting.
The question discussed was whether
the army should intervene in a country

Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Expecting Their Second Child

Prince William and his wife Catherine

have confirmed they are expecting
their second child.
The couple's first child, Prince George,
was born last year amid a huge
international media frenzy.
In a statement, Clarence House said
Prince William's grandmother Queen
Elizabeth II was delighted by the news,
which comes less than 14 months after
the birth of the future king.
"The Queen and members of both
families are delighted with the news,"
the statement said.
"As with her first pregnancy, the
Duchess is suffering from hyperemesis
gravidarum.
"Her royal highness will no longer
accompany the Duke of Cambridge
on their planned engagement. The
Duchess of Cambridge is being treated
by doctors at Kensington Palace."
Catherine suffered from severe morning

sickness during her first pregnancy and

required hospitalisation.
There was no detail of when the baby
was due.
"Many congratulations to the Duke and
Duchess of Cambridge. I'm delighted by
the happy news that they're expecting
another baby," British Prime Minister
David Cameron said on his Twitter feed.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has
joined Mr Cameron in sending his
congratulations to the young family.
"People across the country were delighted
to welcome the Duke and Duchess and
young Prince George to our shores earlier
this year," he said in a statement.
"The young Royals' deep and growing
affection for Australia was evident and
people delighted in meeting the young
Prince.
"This is an exciting time for the Cambridges
and I look forward to welcoming their
growing family back to Australia."

The Governor General Sir Peter

Cosgrove has also joined well-wishers
in congratulating the royal family,
saying he and his wife are "delighted

to hear" there will be another "little

prince or princess".
Prince William is second in line to the
British throne, with George third.

A US father is suspected of killing his

five children and dumping their bodies
in another state, police have said.
Timothy Ray Jones faces multiples
charges in his home state of South
Carolina, as reported.
He was arrested in Mississippi on
unrelated charges.
The children, ages one to eight, were
reported missing on Wednesday, when
their mother told police she could not
get in contact with her ex-husband.
Authorities found the children buried
near an Alabama highway after an allday search on Tuesday, local media

reported.
Alabama Department of Public Safety
spokesman Sgt Steve Jarrett told a news
conference on Tuesday Mr Jones led
investigators to the children's bodies.
Smith County, Mississippi, Sheriff
Charlie Crumpton told reporters that Mr
Jones was stopped at a safety checkpoint
on Saturday and was determined to be
driving under the influence of drugs,
A deputy found what were believed
to be chemicals used to manufacture
methamphetamine and a substance
believed to be the street drug Spice, Mr
Crumpton said.

Investigator also found what appeared

to be bleach, hydrochloric acid, blood
and possible body fluids inside the
vehicle.
When officers ran his vehicle's
identification through a national
database, police discovered he was
wanted in South Carolina "regarding a
welfare concern of his children", who
were on a national missing persons
list".
Mr Jones had told neighbours in South
Carolina he was preparing to move
out of the state with the children, local
media report.

Best & Worst Foods For Gallbladder Disease

Over 1/2 million gallbladders are
removed annually. Gallbladder disease
is a serious condition. If you suspect that
you are having a gallbladder attack and
are in severe gallbladder pain, especially
if you also have a fever, consult your
doctor immediately or go straight to
the emergency room. This post may
serve to help you know the symptoms
in advance and take precautions so a
gallbladder attack might be avoided.
It is important to seek medical help right
away and obtain a proper diagnosis at
the first sign of gallbladder disease.
In this post, you will find the foods to
avoid as well as the foods that have been
found to be helpful in the treatment and
prevention of gallbladder disease.
Remember no one, neither an MD nor
a holistic practitioner, ever cures us
of anything. Natural therapies simply
provide the building blocks to help the
body heal itself. Western medicine is
great for emergencies, however, it falls
short when it comes to chronic disease as
it does not offer a forensic look at what
led to the disease state in the first place,
such as improper diet and nutritional
deficiencies, unhealthy choices, such as
smoking and abuse of pharmaceutical

drugs and a stressful life style.

What we find in western medicine is
a one size fits all model and its goal
is to make symptoms go away. This
is kind of like pulling the fuse when
the engine warning light goes off.
We dont really want to just make
symptoms go away, we want to get
to the root or underlying cause of our
dis-ease state. With gallbladder disease
both western medicine and holistic
alternatives can come together, and
provide the tools for actual healing!
If a gallbladder removal surgery can
be avoided by making some changes,
for example in your diet, wouldnt that
be the best possible outcome? Or what
if symptoms persist after gallbladder
removal, which often happens? This is
a clear sign that the underlying cause
of problem has not been resolved.
The diagnostic tool of choice for
gallbladder disease is usually an
ultrasound scan. Ask your doctor for a
copy of the scan results so you can either
get a second opinion and/or work with
the practitioners at GallbladderAttack.

monitored carefully. He or she might
welcome learning about this! One of
my own MDs was so impressed with
Oriental Medicine and acupuncture
that he took two years off from his own
practice to become trained in it and
now incorporates it into his practice.
His entire paradigm shifted as a result
of this exploration.
With your medical diagnosis in hand
and blessing from your doctor, the first
and perhaps most important rule to
follow from now on is to eat a variety
of fresh organic, raw and lightly
steamed green vegetables, good fats
(like avocados) and exclude sugars,
and all processed and refined foods.
It was most likely food choices that
caused the gallbladder disease in the
first place. Here are the food culprits to
avoid!
Foods to avoid for general
gallbladder disease:
Eggs (Research showed that eggs have
caused symptoms in up to 95 percent of
patients. We dont know however if the
eggs used in this research were factoryfarmed or the better choice of free
range and organic but this is always the
problem with clinical trials and tests. For
right now try substituting flax seed gel in
recipes that require eggs for the glue
that holds things together. For example
1 TBSP ground flax seed to 3 TBSP hot
water will congeal into a nice gel.
Fowl (turkey, chicken and again we
assume the culprits are factory farmed
but again lets err on the side of caution
and avoid these foods for now)
Dairy (pasteurized) milk, cheese, and
cream. (I personally have found raw
dairy to not be a problem but again
we are all different and have different
philosophies, so proceed with caution)
Gluten and grains in general such as
wheat, barley, rye, spelt, etc.
Corn
Coffee, regular or decaf
Oranges, grapefruit
Nuts
Trans fats, Hydrogenated, partiallyhydrogenated oils, vegetable oils
Margarine
Fried Foods
Saturated fats (its best to even avoid my
favorite fat for just about everything,
coconut oil until feeling better)
Red meats
Spicy foods
Chocolate
Ice cream
Black tea
Alcohol, beer, wine, liqueur
Fruit juice
Carbonated water
Tap water
Turnips
Cabbage, cauliflower
Colas and all sodas
Oats (for some people)

Avoid all artificial sweeteners, sugar,

preservatives, refined and bleached
foods (like white flour)
Avoid smoking as it can exacerbate the
symptoms
Avoid all possible food allergens
What foods are thought to be good
for gallbladder disease?
Organic and locally grown foods from
the list below are wonderful raw or
lightly steamed, especially the green
vegetables. Dont forget, we must
include good fats (like avocados) too.
Beets
Cucumbers
Green beans not the same as dried
beans
Okra
Sweet potatoes (not yams these are
the ones that are gold inside not reddish
orange; they have a lighter peel)
Avocados a good way to get needed
fats directly from food
Vinegars all types
Garlic and onions help with liver
cleansing but not processed types like
flakes or powder. But some people have
trouble digesting them so pay attention
to what your own body tells you!
Shallots
Tomatoes ripe
Cold water fish salmon, trout
Lemons (lemon juice in the morning
with hot water helps to clean the liver)
Grapes and fresh organic grape juice
Apples, berries, papaya, pears
Oils like flax or hemp should be used
for salad dressing with fresh lemon
juice or vinegar.
Do not ever cook flax oil. Always
keep it refrigerated. You may cook in
vegetable broth.
Vegetable juices beet and cucumber
are especially helpful to gallbladder.
You can add other green vegetables
like swiss chard, dandelion greens,
beet greens, celery, carrots, (avoid the
cabbage family)
Avoid all fruit juices except organic
grape juice and organic apple (selfjuiced is best but most health food
stores have some good options, just
read the labels carefully).
All the vegetables listed above for
juicing are good.
Use baby mixed organic greens for salads
just avoid the bitter greens for now.
It is very important to never over eat
anything, less is best and do not eat late
and do not eat when stressed.
When gallbladder disease is suspected
or has been confirmed, again it is critical
to avoid fried foods, fatty foods and
particular types of fats like trans fats,
hydrogenated fats, partially-hydrogenated
fats (read your labels) and saturated fats.
Remember, if you are in severe
gallbladder pain, and especially if you
also have a fever, consult your doctor

Supportive care helps people meet
the physical, practical, emotional and
spiritual challenges of prostate cancer.
It is an important part of cancer care.
There are many programs and services
available to help meet the needs and
improve the quality of life of people
living with cancer and their loved ones,
especially after treatment has ended.
Recovering from prostate cancer
and adjusting to life after treatment
is different for each man, depending
on the extent of the disease, the type
of treatment and many other factors.
The end of cancer treatment may
bring mixed emotions. Even though
treatment has ended, there may be other
issues to deal with, such as coping with
long-term side effects. A man who has
been treated for prostate cancer may
have the following concerns.
Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary
loss of urine or the inability to control
urination. Urinary incontinence can
occur in men with prostate cancer:
Enlargement of the prostate can
obstruct the neck of the bladder neck.
This can cause an overflow of urine
when the bladder becomes too full
(overflow incontinence).
Prostate surgery or radiation therapy can
damage the nerves or muscles that control
bladder function or the release of urine.
Pelvic radiation can cause irritation of
the lining of the bladder, resulting in
frequent urination and urgency.
Incontinence may be embarrassing
and inconvenient, but it can be treated
with medication, surgery or supportive
measures to achieve better control.
Self-esteem and body image
How a person feels about or sees
themselves is called self-esteem.
Body image is a person's perception
of their own body. Prostate cancer and
its treatments can affect a man's selfesteem and body image. Often this is
because cancer or cancer treatments
may result in body changes, such as:
changes in body weight and muscle
mass due to hormonal therapy
loss of the testicles (orchiectomy)
loss of bladder control
inability to get an erection
Some of these changes can be
temporary, others will last for a long
time and some will be permanent. For
many people, body image and their

Prostate Cancer
perception of how others see them is
closely linked to self-esteem.
Sexuality
Many men continue to have strong,
supportive relationships and a
satisfying sex life after prostate cancer.
Sexual problems that can occur because
of prostate cancer treatment include:
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the
inability to get and keep an erection
firm enough to have sex.
Retrograde ejaculation can result from
prostate cancer surgery (TURP). It
occurs when semen flows backward
into the bladder and mixes with urine,
rather than out through the penis during
orgasm.
Dry orgasm can result from prostate
cancer surgery (radical prostatectomy).
A man who no longer produces semen
may still have an orgasm. This is
called a dry orgasm. A man who does
not produce semen will not be able to
father a child naturally.
Decreased libido (loss of sex drive)
may result from reduced testosterone
levels due to hormonal treatments and
other side effects of prostate cancer
treatment.
It is common to have a decreased
interest in sex around the time of
diagnosis and treatment. When the
man first starts having sex after
treatment, he may be afraid that it will
be painful or that he will not have an
erection or orgasm. The first attempts
at being intimate with a partner may
be disappointing. Some men and their
partners may need counselling to help
them cope with these feelings and the
effects of cancer treatments on their
ability to have sex.
Fatigue
Fatigue causes a person to feel more
tired than usual and can interfere with
daily activities and sleep. It occurs
for a variety of reasons. Fatigue may
be caused by anemia, specific drugs,
poor appetite, depression, or it may
be related to toxic substances that are
produced when cancer cells break
down and die. Fatigue may get better
as time goes by, or it can continue
long after the person has finished their
cancer treatment.
Osteoporosis
Some hormonal therapies that are
used to block or decrease the body's
production of testosterone can increase
the risk of osteoporosis. The hormone
testosterone causes prostate cancer
to grow, but it also plays a role in
maintaining strong bones. Hormonal
therapies that lower the levels of this
hormone can increase bone loss. These
therapies include luteinizing hormone
releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists
and orchiectomy. Early detection and
treatment of osteoporosis can decrease

bone loss and reduce bone fractures.

Nutrition
Men diagnosed with prostate cancer
may have questions about the kind
of food that is good for them. Diets
that promote healthy, well-balanced
eating from a variety of food groups
will contribute to better health while
recovering from prostate cancer.
There is no research that shows
taking nutritional supplements of any
kind can cure prostate cancer. Some
studies suggest a link between prostate
cancer and a high-fat diet. It is wise
to minimize the amount of fat in the
diet. Men with prostate cancer should
consult their doctor or dietitian about
the best nutrition for them.
Physical activity
The type and amount of physical
activity a man can do after prostate
cancer treatment often depends on:
the type of prostate cancer treatment he
received
his overall health and physical
condition
Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise
should be avoided for a number of weeks
after a radical prostatectomy, in order
to allow the body to heal completely.
Talk to the doctor or healthcare team
before starting or resuming an exercise
or physical activity program. Exercise
can help a man return to the activities
of daily living, reduce fatigue and
improve energy levels.
Returning to work
Many men continue to work while
being treated for prostate cancer, but
it is quite possible that their way of
working will change. They may have
to take some time off or adjust their
work schedule to allow for treatment
and recovery. Returning to work is an
important part of returning to a normal
routine after treatment.
Men with desk jobs should be able to return
to work after 3 to 4 weeks. Men with jobs
that are more physical and require lifting

and bending will have to wait longer

before returning to work. When the doctor
gives the go-ahead, normal work activities
can be started again.
Anatomy and physiology of the
prostate
The prostate gland is part of a man's
reproductive and urinary systems. The
prostate is oval shaped with a rounded
tip. It is approximately 4 cm wide
and 3 cm thick. The actual size of the
prostate varies from man to man. It can
range from the size of a walnut to a
small apple.
The prostate surrounds the base (or
neck) of the bladder. It has 2 lobes
that surround the urethra. The urethra
carries urine from the bladder, through
the prostate, and out the penis.
Male reproductive system
PICTURE AT THE BOTTOM
Structure
The prostate gland is covered in a layer
of connective tissue called the prostatic
capsule.
The prostate gland is made up of
different types of cells:
gland cells that produce the fluid
portion of semen
muscle cells that control urine flow and
ejaculation
fibrous cells that provide the supportive
structure of the gland
Some structures around the prostate
are:
seminal vesicles These glands
produce semen and are found on both
sides of the prostate.
vas deferens These tubes carry
sperm from the testicles to the seminal
vesicles.
nerve bundles These nerves control
bladder and erectile function and are
found on both sides of the prostate.
muscles These muscles control
urination.

Mika Singh Gifts Amitabh A Diamond Ring

Singer Mika Singh gifted megastar
Amitabh Bachchan a diamond ring
when Big B was invited as a special
guest to promote his upcoming film,
'Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya'.
As a mark of honor, Mika Singh gifted
a diamond ring to Amitabh Bachchan.
Says a source, As the guest of honour
at the films music launch, Bachchan
was asked to speak about Mika. Big
B mentioned how he listens to Mikas
songs once in a while and how his
family loves the singers voice. He
also joked that now there was one more
competitor in the field of acting.
An overwhelmed Mika thanked the
superstar with a diamond ring for
gracing the event with his presence.
He then took out a diamond ring from
his hand and made Bachchan wear it.

The senior actor was a little hesitant to

accept it but Mika insisted that he take
it. It was his way of expressing his love
for the veteran actor; he gave it to Big B
as a mark of respect, says the source.
Mika is well-known for gifting
expensive gifts to his celeb friends. In
March this year, he gifted an expensive
wristwatch to Mithun Chakraborty,
when he appeared on the sets of a dance
reality show. When he met Rekha for
the first time at an awards function, he
gifted his own Sikh Khanda locket.
Recently, the singer had also gifted
music director Pritam an SUV for
giving him a hit song. When asked
at the event about his latest gifting
gesture, Mika said, I am just grateful
that Big B took time out from his busy
schedule.

Sinha and Anushka Shetty, features

S.D. Burman Was Stubborn

And Thoughtful Musician

S.D. Burman had composed four songs

for "Talash" (1969) when the producer
suggested to use singer Mukesh's
voice for "Tere Naina Talash Karein",
but the musician was determined to
feature playback singer Manna Dey
because his lilting voice better suited
the situation. This minor difference
saw Burman walking out of the project
- just one of the many anecdotes writer
and author Sathya Saran mentions in
her new book "Sun Mere Bandhu Re:
The Musical World of S.D.Burman"
(Harper Collins) that was launched in
the capital.
"He was a very stubborn person who
would brush aside something he didn't
like," Sathya said, adding: "But he
was a thoughtful composer who would
understand the situation well."
This is why, the former editor of
Femina magazine and a columnist,
pointed out that Burman, after his
fall out with "Talash" producer O.P.
Ralhan, he even refused to meet him.
"It was only when filmmaker Vijay
Anand intervened and pacified the
situation that Burman was back on the
project," Saran said, adding Manna
Dey finally sang the song.
Saran, who has written a biography,
"10 Years With Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi's
Journey", was approached by many
who requested her to write on Burman
who has composed the music for over
100 movies, including Hindi and
Bengali films.
But to write on Burman, she admitted
she first had to understand the composer
from his many acquaintances and
friends.
This was more so because his son,

R.D.Burman, had passed away and she

couldn't contact versatile singer Asha
Bhosle, his wife.
"In the absence of these links, I had to
rely on his autobiography and people
who knew him," she admitted.
It was also Mumbai-based Saran's
personal fondness for film music and
S.D.Burman's music that the writing
of the book was smooth sailing.
Looking through various prisms, she
has captured many memorable stories
about the man who has composed
memorable music for films like
"Pyaasa", "Jewel Thief", "Abhimaan"
and "Chupke Chupke", among others.
Saran pointed out how learning some
hard lessons early in life helped in
shaping up his career and he restricted
himself to composing songs for only
four films a year.
"Early in his career, he gave many hit
songs, but when he would go out and
meet people, he saw they were singing
Naushad's songs. He realised that people
only liked classical songs," said Saran.
"He got the grip of this mantra and
became selective. He would make his
servants listen to the tunes to get their
reactions," she added.
Sharing another anecdote, Saran
recollected how S.D. Burman was
miffed with actor Dev Anand for
spoiling a beautiful melody "Phoolon
Ke Rang Se" from "Prem Pujari" by
directing the song in an unappealing
manner.
"Burman understood the meaning of
scenes, so he was very angry with Dev
Anand for spoiling this beautiful song
with unattractive picturisation," she
concluded.

Vinod Khanna
Vinod Khanna was born in Peshawar,
British India on 6th October 1946
in a business family which migrated
from Punjab to Delhi, to settle down
in Mumbai in 1947. He did his
schooling in St. Xaviers High School
Mumbai and Delhi Public School, New
Delhi and finally passed his Senior
Cambridge from the Lord Bames
High School, Devlali with Honours.
At the age of nineteen, while he was
reading Commerce at Sydenham
College in Mumbai, in his junior year,
his film career was launched with the
film 'Man Ka Meet'. His parents were
Kisnanchand and Kamla Khanna. He
has two sons Akshaye Khanna and
Rahul Khanna by his wife Gitanjali
whom he divorced and married Kavita
in the year 1990 having two daughters
by her Sakshi and Shraddha.
Vinod Khanna debuted in Sunil Dutt's
1968 film Man Ka Meet as a villain.
He acted in multi-starrer films often
playing supporting and negative roles
in hit films such as Purab Aur Paschim
(1970), Sachaa Jhutha (1970) and
Mera Gaon Mera Desh(1971). His
big break was in the 1971 film Mere
Apne directed by Gulzar. His sensitive
performance as an army officer facing
death row in another Gulzar scripted
and directed 1973 film Achanak was
critically acclaimed. The songless film
echoed the true life story of K. M.

Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra and

Khanna portrayed Kawas Nanavati, the
real life Navy officer.
He went on to star in many hits
throughout the mid 1970s and early
1980s, including Parvarish (1977),
Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Khoon
Pasina (1977), Muqaddar Ka Sikander
(1978), The Burning Train (1980) and
Qurbani (1980). Having peaked in
Bollywood, he became a follower of
the spiritual teacher Osho (Rajneesh)
and left the film industry in 1979 for

eight years. At this time, he was the

most successful actor in the Bollywood,
competing with Amitabh Bachchan. He
rejoined the industry, eight years later
in mid 1980s. He continued to appear
in many notable films from the mid
1980s to the 1990s such as Dayavan
(1988), Chandni (1989), Kshatriya
(1993) Eena Meena Deeka (1994) and
Ekka Raja Rani (1994).
In 1997 he introduced his son
Akshaye in the film Himalay Putra
which he produced and also starred

Sign Another Film Together

Yes, you heard that right! Looks like Duggu and Kat are on a roll. After Bang
Bang, the two have apparently been roped in for a prestigious project.
Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaifs exciting is that? Rumours are rife that
chemistry in Zoya Akhtars Zindagi the Dhoom:3 babe will be seen opposite
Na Milegi Dobara was nothing less the honey-eyed actor in Zoyas next
than electrifying. No wonder, Sidharth which is titled Road. Interestingly,
Anand signed the duo for his directorial Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol will
venture Bang Bang which is slated to also star in film. Guess its a reunion
release in October this year. While we of sorts for the whole ZNMD team!
cant wait to watch Jr Roshan and Ms Hrithik and Katrina are certainly the
Kaifs latest offering, we hear the two sexiest onscreen couple in Bollywood
have bagged yet another project. How at the moment.

in. In 1999 he received a Filmfare

Lifetime Achievement Award for
his contribution to the film industry
for over three decades. He has since
acted in fewer films playing character
roles. His most recent films were
Deewaanapan (2002) and Risk (2007).
In 1997, he joined the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) and was nominated from
Gurdaspur, East Punjab in the next
year's Lok Sabha poll.
The star-factor helped him oust three
time Lok Sabha member Sukhbans
Kaur Bhinder. Bhinder's perceived
inability to develop the area outweighed
the "outsider" tag applied to Khanna.
The latter became union minister for
culture and tourism in July 2002. Six
months later he was moved to the more
important ministry of external affairs
(MEA) as minister of state. In 2004 he
won re-election from Gurdaspur.
He was the highest taxpayer in Mumbai
in 1990-91. Presently, he continues to
participate in the film business based
out of Dubai. His sons Akshay Khanna
and Rahul Khanna are Hindi film actors.
Currently Vinod Khanna is acting as
the lead in the Hindi serial Mere Apne
produced by Smriti Irani which airs
on the new channel 9x. He plays the
role of the male lead Kashi Nath and
is paired with producer Smriti Irani
who also acts as the female lead in the
serial.

Hair Care

How to tackle greasiness and how

often it is okay to wash your hair.
It's certainly hot and you're definitely
sweating it out while commuting to
work, at the gym or even at home.
These increased levels of perspiration
might make you feel like washing your
hair every day. Experts tackle common
questions that you may have about this
predicament.
Is a daily hair wash okay?
It's not necessary to do so, feels a
cosmetologist . Preferably not every
day as shampoos have harsh chemicals
and can remove the essential oils from
the scalp, causing an over-drying of
the scalp. Three times a week is good
enough. Even if you perspire, just pour
plain water on the hair. If your hair
suffers from Hyperhidrosis (problem
of excessive sweating), you may have
to wash everyday. But use only a mild
shampoo, which is suitable for to your
hair.
Overcoming dandruff issues
Dandruff and an itchy scalp is probably
one of the biggest and most common
offshoots of the sun playing havoc on
hair. There are two types of dandruff,
oily and dry. Oily dandruff is dangerous
as its eats away the pigment of your
hair, while dry dandruff falls off. The
former can give rise to numerous
problems like pimples, pigmentation,
etc, as dandruff on the scalp prevents
blood circulation. Stay away from
using heavy oils. If you have oily skin,

just use a lighter oil, like olive oil, and

massage it for 15 minutes, followed
by a hot towel treatment, then wash
it off. Home-based treatments include
putting ginger juice on the scalp. Leave
it overnight and wash it off. Also, wash
hair every alternate day with a mild,
anti-dandruff shampoo. Eating green
vegetables like palak and methi helps
the hair.
Using henna, a myth
Henna actually dries the hair and most
stylists will tell you should not use it.
Henna makes the hair more porous and
can turn hair brittle. Instead, use a good
conditioner, which has a sunscreen or
even a hair serum.
How to use hair serums
Hair serums improve the texture of the
hair and untangle it, leaving it softer.
They are perfect for that dry, frizz that
summer bestows. Anyone can use it
but there are rules to follow. If you use
too much, the hair can look oily, so,
take only a few drops on the fingertips
and apply on the hair, not scalp. Look
for products that have argan oil as well
as those with walnut and almond oil.
Avoid those having silicon. After you
have used a hair serum, don't use a
spray after that.
Tips for healthy hair
- Trim away damaged ends of the hair,
especially if they are frizzy.
- Wear a hat, scarf or peak cap (not too
tight) to protect hair from damaging
UV rays.
- Use a hair sunscreen if you are going
out between 11am and 4 pm as that is
when the sun's rays are harshest.
- Always use a little conditioner on the
hair before you go swimming.
Thinking about a hair spa?
Go natural when it comes to a hair
spa. Look for nutrients in what nature
provides us. For instance, grind
hibiscus into a paste and apply on
hair. It darkens and strengthens hair
roots. Methi (rich in iron and darkens
hair) and neem (antibiotic and has
germicidal properties) also increase
hair strength. Aloe vera is a powerful
antioxidant and can tackle scalp
allergies and boils. It is also a great
hair strengthener. Avocado is full of
antioxidants and is especially good for
those who have coloured hair.

Relationships

Common Mistakes In
Relationships That You Can Avoid
So you have gotten past the initial dating
stage and are now in a relationship.
This can be the best or worst part of your
life depending on how you proceed. I
am coming at this topic with a five year
(and counting) relationship with many
highs and lows. Learn from my mistakes
and triumphs and do not fall into these
common relationship mistakes.
1. Losing the romance in the
relationship is one of the key reasons
why relationships fail.
It is easy to become complacent and slack
on making an effort for romance. The
truth is, relationships are work. Not that
you wont have any fun along the way, but
you need to remember it takes a focused
effort to be romantic with your partner.
2. Trying to control our significant
other.
Many of us either have control issues
or things that the other person does that
drive us crazy. Both of these scenarios
can lead to us wanting to control or
comment on every move the other
person makes. Think about it though,
would you like someone telling you
what to do every waking minute? You
are not this persons parent. If he/she is
a grown adult, treat them like one.
3. Expecting perfection.
We are all human. We all make
mistakes. Do not hold your significant
other to some unrealistically high
expectation. This is especially hard for
those of us who hold unrealistically
high expectations for ourselves, but
thats another topic altogether.
4. Avoiding confrontation.
Fighting is not the way most of us want
to spend our time, so it can be tempting
to just brush all of the problems under
the rug. The flaw with that plan is that
the problems collect and multiply. This
will ultimately end up in an explosive
argument, or a parting of ways with the
other person baffled as to what went
wrong. Communication is huge in any
relationship and should not be avoided.
5. Fighting about everything.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, do
not make everything an argument. Think
about all of the problems you have with
your partner and really consider whether
these are deal breakers or if you can
build a bridge and get over them.
6. Trying to change the other person.
In relationships, we need to realize we are
unique individuals. Often we are drawn to
someone who is completely opposite to us
and after a while we can be tempted to try
to change them to be the same as us. Take
a step back and remember why you fell
in love with this person in the first place.
My boyfriend is for the most part carefree
and funny, but sometimes his jokes start
to drive me nuts or I wish he was more

organized. I have to remember that I love

that he can make me laugh and that he has
such a positive outlook on life.
7. Keeping secrets from your loved
one.
This is something that goes along with
keeping communication opendo not
keep secrets. Not that you have to tell the
other person every minute detail about
your life, but you should not intentionally
keep something major from them. You
know it is a secret that needs to be shared
when you feel even slightly guilty for not
telling them. It will come out eventually
and sooner is always better than later.
8. Not taking time for yourself and
being too co-dependent.
If you spend every waking moment
with your significant other, you will
ultimately lose who you are as an
individual. Things like going to the
store on your own will be hard and
you will find yourself consulting that
person for every small decision you
make. Take some time to do what you
love. Have your own hobbies, interests
and friends. You will both benefit from
this and have a richer life as a result.
9. Not taking differences in core
values seriously.
Even though you like the same music and
enjoy spending time with one another,
you will still have a hard time getting
past major differences. Core values
include things like religion, morality,
and the importance of things like family,
friends, careers and money. Take some
time to discuss these things before you
move your relationship forward or you
might be in for disappointment later.
10. Not talking about money.
Money is always a tricky subject.
You might have come from different
backgrounds. If one person grew up
wanting for nothing and the other has
always had to pinch pennies, there may be
some disagreements over how money is
spent. If you are in a serious relationship,
even if you have separate money, be sure
to discuss these things as money issues are
guaranteed to come up eventually.
11. Forgetting to appreciate your
partner.
Lastly, never forget to tell your
significant other, thank you or I
love you. At the beginning of the
relationship you surely noticed all of the
kind things that he/she was doing for
you and praised him/her accordingly.
You said you loved each other all of
the time. Sometimes we forget how
awesome the other person is until we
think about it. Tell your significant other
right now how you feel about them!
Now that you have been warned about these
common relationship mistakes, you have a
much better chance of surviving as a couple!

Over-Qualified? Don't Be A Dummy!

Al Kamal, MBA
Arza Employment Serv Ltd
Ever been rejected for a job on the basis
that you are over-qualified? What a slap
in the face that can be! Youd think these
companies would be eager to employ
the services of someone so experienced
and knowledgeable at a lower rate. So
why arent they picking up all these
over-qualified potential employees?
And should you under-play your work
experience and qualifications in order
to win a lesser position? Weve heard
of people who have done this, and then
at the last minute when the company
has decided they want just that little
bit more, they have refused to look at
an applicant because they had hidden
their talents.
Well, first, lets look at why potential
employers are so afraid of the overqualified worker. The fears are quite
real, because what they fear does often
happen.
1.
You are likely to move on
sooner, rather than later, to a better
paying position. You are in the
headlights of headhunters looking for
talent. Why waste money and time on
you then?
2.
If things go wrong and they
want to sack you, being so much wiser,
youll cause a lot more trouble if they
try to push you out the door, whereas a
junior would probably leave with their
tail between their legs.
3.
Youll become bored with this
job, or get hoity-toity about your place
in the organization. You might be hard
to motivate and challenging to manage.
You might have a negative influence on
other workers with your attitude.
4.
Youll cost more. Youll expect
to be worth more and eventually you
may ask for more, or youll milk the
system because you know the ropes.
5.
The employer is suspicious of
your motives and your true commitment
to the job. Is this just a fill in role? Will
they be risking too much by taking you
on?
Dont despair. There are some things
you can do that are not dishonest and
may help you land the job. Never
say that you are interested in the
position because you want a job with
no responsibilities or because less is

required of you. This will not even

get you in the door for an interview.
You need to do as you would for any
position you seek address yourself
to the position statement. You need to
convince them that you are enthusiastic
about the position and are qualified to
meet the requirements of the position,
nothing more, nothing less. Tell the
employer why they should hire you
over somebody else.
Starting with your cover letter, you
might like to get in first and raise the
issue of being overqualified and explain
why that is not a problem. Explain how
your experience and qualifications
would benefit them. Convince them
that you would be an asset, not a risk.
You can explain how your previous
experience would help you to solve
problems that would be beyond a
younger, less experienced worker, and
that you will be able to work more
quickly and be more productive. You
will need to offer an explanation as to
why you are seeking to drop to a lower
entry level position. Honesty is the best
policy just be careful how you present
it. Honesty like, I want to have time to
attend college to further my education
and get a better position, may go
against you, compared to something
like, I want more time to spend with
my family. The reasons you give for
wanting the lesser position should be
meaningful, to justify your willingness
to earn less.
Provided you have explained your
willingness to assume responsibilities
and utilize your more experienced skills
when called for, but that generally, you
are after a lesser position because of so
and so, then most employers would be
prepared to consider you. If they are
worried about how much to pay you,
tell them that work/life balance and
satisfaction are more important to you
than the money. Be quick to point out
how much money you will save them
by having such a valuable employee
work for them at such a reasonable rate.
Reassure them that you are not going
to jump ship at the first opportunity (of
course, if that is your intention, then
you may just have to get used to being
considered over qualified and overlooked.)
Emphasize the money you will save
them by using your experienced skills,
and give examples. In advance, think
of all the ways you can utilize your
skills in the position you are going
after, and theyre getting all this for
half the price.
Of course, there is the possibility that
the Manager may be afraid of you
because you may show him/her up, or
worse, take his job! Again, you have
to emphasize your reasons for wanting
the lesser position reassuring the
manager that his job is safe. You can
point out, however, that with your
experience youd be a great asset to the
manager and to the company, being able
to grow to meet the companys needs if

necessary, perhaps emphasizing again

that you are not after the top job! Have
them consider the usefulness of your
skills with younger staff who do not
have your experience.
You need to sell your strengths and your
reasons for wanting a less challenging
and less paying position. Be the first to
raise the subject of being over-qualified
and ensure you meet all their possible
objections rationally.
Now, regarding your Resume, this will
require a rewrite. You dont want a
resume that shouts you are ready for the
Presidents position or that you were
CEO in your last job. You need to adjust
your resume to address the criteria of
the position you are going after. Its not
a matter of being dishonest, rather you
need to be more selective with how
much detail you give. Many positions
ask for applicants to address the job
criteria only, so you will be complying
with their requirements by doing this
and omitting the fact that you were
once CEO of London Drugs!
If the position you are going after is
for a Sales person, dont focus on the
fact that you were the Senior Manager
of the entire Sales Division in your
last role. Focus, instead, on your
experience in sales and the techniques
and knowledge you bring to the role.
If you are genuine, offer to sign a

Stainless Steel

$ 3.00

contract signing on for 12 months. This

will show them you are serious. Point
out that younger people are just as
likely, if not more likely, to want to job
hop their way to bigger positions, but
youve been there, done that, and are
more settled and know what you want.
In short, whilst you are not exactly
offering them something for nothing,
you are offering them more for less.
This is very attractive to employers.
The only other major hurdle will
be convincing them that you are a
stayer. Having said that, youd best
be prepared to honor your word and
stay the distance. Dont forget that
this work experience may very well
crop up in any future interview how
trustworthy will it make you look if a
future employer finds out you lied and
betrayed a previous employer?
Before going after a lesser position,
think carefully about what it will
really entail. If you have a fragile ego,
you may not be able to handle being
relegated to the lower ranks again.
How are you at taking orders? Know
exactly what tasks will be expected of
you. Can an ex CEO go back to running
errands or doing their own filing? Can
you work for a younger Boss?
If none of these things are of concern,
then go ahead and have a go. You have
much to offer!

New Vancouver Canucks Coach Sheds Some Light On

His Plan For Upcoming Season

While Vancouver Canucks fans

demand change, new coach Willie
Desjardins is preaching a status-quo
approach with himself.
After spending more than two decades
attempting to become an NHL head
coach, and with training camp in
Whistler, B.C., two weeks away, he is
vowing not to change his style behind
the bench.
One thing I learned is, youve gotta be
who you are, said Desjardins, 57, the
new Canucks coach, after taking part in
a Vancouver Board of Trade luncheon
Tuesday. You cant be somebody
youre not. It just falls apart on you.
Desjardins reached the NHL this spring
after helping the Texas Stars win the
AHL title. He has also spent time in the
Canadian university and junior ranks,
winning championships at both levels,
while also serving a two-season stint as
a Dallas Stars assistant.
Fans want a significant improvement
in the standings after the team missed
the playoffs for the first time since
2008 last season. Desjardins, who
finds it unbelievable that his longheld dream of guiding an NHL clubs
training camp is about to come true,
suggested that chances of a Canucks
turnaround are better than many people

might think.
You just get to see the quality of people,
Desjardins told reporters. Sometimes,
when you get into something, you go:
Oh, what I have I gotten into? But thats
not the case here.
During the luncheon with 400 members
of the local business community as
well as Canucks president of hockey

Canucks President Trevor Linden

Looking To Bring Back The Fun
Linden holds out hope at Tuesday luncheon of Vancouver's movers and
shakers

Vancouver Canuck fans haven't had

much to cheer about lately, but at a
Vancouver Board of Trade luncheon
Tuesday, Canucks president Trevor
Linden held out hope for a more
entertaining experience for fans after a
summer of rebuilding.
"We need to bring that hope back and
recapture some of these guys who didn't
have great years and put some fun back
in the game and ultimately make Rogers

Arena a better place," he said.

The team is a thousand tickets short of
meeting its sales target and there is no
longer an assumption the support will
be there.
Management is promising the overall
entertainment experience will be
enhanced including improvements to
the food and alcohol sold at games.
Linden and new Canucks coach Willie
Desjardins say the team will better too.

operations Trevor Linden and team GM

Jim Benning Desjardins shed some
light on what fans can expect from the
veteran-laden Canucks. In one notable
change, contrary to the views of former
Vancouver coach John Tortorella, who
was fired after one season, Daniel and
Henrik Sedin are likely to spend less
time killing penalties.
We have to share the workload, said
Desjardins. I dont think were going
to make the playoffs with one line
being shut down. Theyre good at all
aspects of the game. Theyre good at
killing penalties and theyre good fiveon-five. They can play the power play.
I think youre lucky to have players
like that. For us, we want to make sure
that theyre able to go (and) at the end
of the game, theyre still fresh and
theyre playing hard. So that may mean
managing their minutes a little bit. We
want to play with four lines.
Henrik and Daniel, both former NHL
most valuable players, managed
to produce only 50 and 47 points,
respectively, last season. Daniel also

endured a lengthy goal drought while

both battled injuries after seeing their
playing time increased.
Desjardinss view on the Sedins reflects
the desire of the new top brass to have
the Canucks rely on their veterans. Key
additions include centre Nick Bonino
and defenceman Luca Sbisa, who were
acquired via trade from Anaheim for
Ryan Kesler. Vancouver also added
veteran wingers Radim Vrbata and
goaltender Ryan Miller, who were
signed as free agents. Benning, who
replaced former president and GM
Mike Gillis, said he, Linden and
Desjardins have focused this summer
on finding support for the veteran core.
Therell be many challenges for
throughout the season, but I think
weve tried to do everything that we
could at this point to make the team
deeper and give them more enthusiasm
so they play with more energy, said
Benning.
The Canucks lack of depth showed
last season as the NHL veterans and
minor-league callups could not make
up sufficiently for declines in offence
from the Sedins and others when
injuries and poor play took their toll.
We talked about maybe there wasnt
the depth that we needed to counter
those injuries going into that last stretch
of the year, said Benning. So we tried
to add to our depth this summer. Now,
we dont have to rush young players,
and we can let them develop properly
and be ready to come up and play when
we call them up to play.
During the luncheon, questions
focused more on hockey than the clubs
business issues. But the Canucks, used
to perennial sellouts, are also trying to
bolster their bottom line with more onice success.
Linden told reporters that season ticket
sales are down a few percentage
points. But he expects them to pick
up as training camp creates more
excitement about the team.

Frank Farina Agrees To

Help Fiji

Frank Farina (left) with Fiji U20 coach Ravinesh Kumar

Fiji Football Association is pleased
to announce that former Australian
international footballer/coach Frank
Farina has agreed to assist the Fiji side
that is preparing for the 2015 FIFA
Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
He comes in as a technical advisor for
the side.
Farina arrived in the country last
weekend and had his first session with
the Fiji U20 squad on Monday at the
Fiji FA Academy in Ba.
He will be working closely with Coach
Ravinesh Kumar as the Vodafone Fiji
U20 side face their biggest test in NZ
next year.
The 49-year-old says he is keen to be
part of the campaign.
This opportunity came out at a good
time for me when I finished with
Sydney FC in the A-League and a
proposition was put forward by OFC
and Fiji FA to assist the Fiji U-20.
Interestingly this is the first time Fiji
has qualified for the World Cup and it
will be interesting to help and be part
of it, Farina said.
The former Socceroos who has
appeared for his national team 67 times
says he is no stranger to football in Fiji.
Well I have played many years
against Fiji since late 70s early 80s
and then I was coach for the Socceroos
for six years. That time we were still
in the Oceania region. I have a lot of
experience, playing and coaching
against Fijian sides. I pretty much
know the culture and island mentality
.I grew up in PNG for 12 years, I have
always had a soft spot for Oceania and
it is nice to be able to help.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup New

Zealand 2015 will be played from

30 May 20 June in Auckland,
Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, New
Plymouth, Wellington and Whangarei.
The tournament features 24 nations
from across the world and will last 22
days.
Hopefully I can help Ravinesh and his
staff to put on a good performance at
the World Cup in NZ. I would be a liar
if I said that I knew all the players. I
have seen couple of them when I came
two months ago during a tournament
here. We have plenty of time to do that.
At the world cup Fiji are going to
come up against some very good sides,
the best in the world in the U20 level
and you can be rest assured that in Fijis
group you will have most probably a
world champion or a former world
champion and another very strong
side.
It is a great test to see players at this
level and that sort of experience you
cannot buy. It will be a great learning
experience for the players and coaches
as well. The more World Cups you play
the more bigger and better you will see
the football in Fiji.
Farina and coach Kumar are also set to
finalise their programme as they enter a
crucial stage of their preparation.
Im here for two weeks until the
24th of September we will have the
programme done for the rest of the
year leading up to the World Cup and
matter of finalising some games, tours.
Once we have that in place, we will
continue to do our best. I hope we are
able to show the world that Oceania
countries can be competitive, Frank
concluded.

Whitecaps FC Back In The

Playoff Picture With 2-0 Win
Over San Jose Earthquakes

Vancouver Whitecaps FC (8W-6L13D) put themselves back into the

playoff picture with a dominant 2-0 win
over San Jose Earthquakes (6W-11L9D) Wednesday night at BC Place.
Pedro Morales and Kendall Waston,
who won his second straight Budweiser
Man of the Match award, led the way
for Whitecaps FC on a night that club
legend Carl Valentine was inducted in
the Ring of Honour.
Morales picked up his team-leading
eighth goal of the season on a first-half
penalty and added his team-leading
10th assist, a new club record in MLS.
The record-breaking assist came off
a 56th-minute corner, which Waston
met with a spectacular diving header at
the near post to score his first goal in a
Whitecaps FC uniform.
It was a dominant performance from
the Blue and White, who outshot San
Jose by a 17-4 margin and seemed in
control from the opening whistle.
Though he wasnt really tested,
Whitecaps FC goalkeeper David
Ousted picked up his second straight
clean sheet and league-leading ninth of
the season also a new club record.
The win moves Vancouver back into
the fifth and final playoff position in
the Western Conference two points
up on Portland Timbers and now 10
points up on San Jose.
Whitecaps FC head coach Carl
Robinson made two changes to
his starting lineup after Saturdays
scoreless draw with D.C. United.
Right back and San Jose native Steven
Beitashour, who missed the last match
with a hip injury, drew back into the
squad in place of Ethen Sampson
and Erik Hurtado replaced Darren
Mattocks up top.
The Caps controlled play right from
the opening whistle Wednesday at BC
Place. They dominated possession,
showed some bright link-up play in

midfield, and defended well. In fact,

the Earthquakes didnt have a single
shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes.
San Jose appeared content to sit back
and drop numbers behind the ball, but
the Blue and White managed to break
through.
Their first chance came in the 13th
minute, when Waston headed a Mauro
Rosales corner just over the goal.
Waston, who was dominant in the
air throughout the half, was involved
again late.
In the 38th minute, the 6-foot-5 Costa
Rican was hauled down by Victor
Bernardez in the Quakes box as he
lunged at a Morales free kick. The foul
resulted in a Whitecaps FC penalty,
which Morales fired into the bottom
left corner to put the Caps ahead 1-0.
It was a much-deserved goal for
Vancouver, who outshot San Jose 6-0
and controlled nearly 60 per cent of
possession in the opening frame.
The Caps came out flying to start the
second half and nearly doubled their
lead in the 47th minute, when Sebastian
Fernandezs half volley from the left
side of the box missed just wide right.
Vancouver kept coming though and
they made it 2-0 in the 56th minute,
when Waston met an in-swinging
Morales corner with a diving header
into the near post.
From there, it was all Vancouver.
Morales nearly scored his second goal
in the 73rd minute, when he let loose
a heavy shot from the top of the box
after receiving a cheeky Fernandez
back heel pass. But Quakes goalkeeper
Jon Bush dove to his right to make the
save.
Morales, who had a goal called back
due to a hand ball in the 86th minute,
Fernandez and Hurtado each had
opportunities in the dying stages as the
Caps cruised to an exciting victory at
BC Place.
