TUNE: IN

Welcome to ‘Tune:In’, a weekly blog designed to help you stay focused on the
things of God. You may have heard the phrase ‘Tune In’ when you have been
distracted or have been caught day dreaming by a teacher or someone you were
supposed to be listening to and, by using this phrase, they are calling you to refocus on
what they are saying.

This is exactly my hope for you and this blog, that you would ‘Tune: In’ to the things of
God and not be distracted by anything else. The verses below are a great place to start
as they serve as a reminder of what God has already done for you, how he has made it
possible for you to be a follower of Jesus in the first place and now he is calling you to
stay tuned in to his message, the Gospel.

You yourselves are a case study of what he [God] does. At one time you all had your backs turned to God,
thinking rebellious thoughts of him, giving him trouble every chance you got. But now, by giving himself
completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God’s side and put your lives
together, whole and holy in his presence. You don’t walk away from a gift like that! You stay grounded and
steady in that bond of trust, constantly TUNED IN TO THE MESSAGE, careful not to be distracted or
diverted. There is no other Message—just this one. Every creature under heaven gets this same Message.
I, Paul, am a messenger of this Message.

Colossians 1: 21-23 Message
I often find that songwriters are able to communicate what I’m feeling in a way that I never could so we are going to
begin with a series on how certain songs fit with what the Bible says. Up first is ‘The Heart of Worship’ by Matt
Redman.

You can find the song on YouTube, Spotify or on a CD if you still use those. Read the
lyrics on the back as you listen to the song. What words or lines jumped out to you?

What is the big idea of this song?

What is ‘worship’?

How would you describe the way you approach worship? What do you think it means to
‘bring more than a song’?

Before he began his ministry on earth Jesus was tempted by the devil and he tried to
trick Jesus into saying or doing something wrong.

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the
world and their splendour. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and
worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the
Lord your God, and serve him only.’ Matthew 4: 8-10

Do you ever find yourself being tempted to worship anyone/anything other than God?

In what ways do you need to come back to the heart of worship? Take a moment to say ‘sorry for
the thing you have made it’ and ask God to make it all about Jesus.

What can you learn about ‘true and proper worship’ from the verses below:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to o!er your bodies as
a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not
conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and
perfect will. Romans 12: 1-2

The Heart of Worship

By Matt Redman

When the music fades
And all is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
Something that's of worth
That will bless your heart

I'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the ways things appear
You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You
All about You, Jesus
I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You
It's all about You Jesus

King of endless worth
No one could express
How much You deserve
Though I'm weak and poor
All I have is Yours
Every single breath

I'll bring You more than just a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You
All about You, Jesus
I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You
It's all about You Jesus
