AIR AROUND US

1.Why do mountaineers carry oxygen cylinders with them while climbing high mountains?
A. As the height increases ,the atmosphere becomes thinner and the percentage of oxygen
decreases. Therefore mountaineers carry oxygen cylinders to avoid difficulty in breathing.
2. why do we wrap a woollen blanket over a burning object?
A. Oxygen support burning. The woollen blanket cuts off the air supply and the object stop
burning.
3.Explain an activity to prove that water contains air.
A. Take some water in a glass vessel or beaker .Heat it slowly on a tripoid stand. Well before
the water begins to boil, look carefully at the inner surface of the vessel. You see tiny
bubbles on the inside. These bubbles come from the air dissolved in the water .The air
dissolve in it escapes. As we continue heating, the water itself turns in to water vapour
.From this activity, we can prove that water contains air.
4.How do animals live in soil respire?
A. Animals live in the soil respire with the help of air present in the soil. Animals make
burrows and holes in the soil through which air enters in to the soil.
5.Name the gas that cause suffocation while burning.
Carbondioxide.
6.How is air important for the life on earth?
A. Air is necessary for all living organisms to survive. Air helps to generate electricity and to
draw water from the tubewells by wind mills .Air helps in the dispersal of seeds and pollen
of different flowers of different plants. Air plays an important role in water cycle.
7.What is the exact composition of air?
Air is a mixture of many gases. It contains 78% of nitrogen, 21% of oxygen. It contains
carbon dioxide, water vapour and dust particles.
8.Which is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere?
A. Nitrogen.
9.Why does a lump of cotton wool shrink in water?
A. Cotton wool shrinks in water because, the fibres absorb water and fills the air spaces and
the air spaces get reduced.
10.How do plants and animals help each other in the exchange of gases in the atmosphere?
OR How is the balance of carbondioxide and oxygen maintained in the atmosphere?
A. Animals cannot live without plants .The balance of oxygen and carbondioxide in the
atmosphere is maintained through respiration in plants and animals and by the
photosynthesis in plants. This shows the interdependence of animals and plants.
11. Why are the chimneys in the factories high raised?
A. The burning of fuel produces smoke. Smoke contains a few gases and fine dust particles
and is often harmful. That is why we see long chimneys in factories .This takes harmful
smoke and gases away from our nose.
12. List five activities that are possible because of the presence of air.
A. 1. The wind makes the wind mills rotate. The wind mill is used to draw water from tube
wells, run flour mills and generate electricity.
2.Air helps the birds, bats and insects fly.
3.We can fly kites, play with firki with the help of air.
4.A weather cock moves in the direction in which the air is moving in that place and then
shows the direction.
5. Air helps in the movement of aeroplanes and parachutes.
