Windrixville,
OKLAHOMA--
Three hoodlums turned heroes rescued
trapped children from a deadly fire. On
November 12, 1967 a fire sparked up in
the old abandoned church located on the
top of Jay Mountain.
It was reported that children were
playing in the old church when the fire
sparked up. A lit cigarette was assumed
to be the cause of atrocious fire.
Late in the afternoon five kids were
playing in the old abandoned church.
There had been a school picnic
nearby, and when the fire sprang up five
kids were missing. Jerry Wood was the
first to be the hero and help the kids, but
due to physical difficulties he could not
help.
Then two boys around the age of
sixteen rushed into the violent fire.
Their names are Johnny Cade and
Ponyboy Curtis. Shannon Snow, the
parent of one of the children in the fire
said,
When I heard about the fire I wanted
to cry because I was so scared for my
child. I am forever in debt to these
young heroes. Thank you.

It was hot inside. It was
like a red hell, and when the
cinders and embers fell on
us, I became scared and
didnt think I would make it
out. Curtis said.
The two kids were not
alone though, another teen
named Dallas Dally
Winston stepped in to help.
Winston helped to get the
remaining children from the
church and put out the fire
on Ponyboys back that
could have potentially
killed him.
These boys are heroes. No
one else stepped up to help
with the fire, and the
firemen didnt come until
later. If it wasnt for these
boys the kids would have
died. It doesnt matter who
these kids are, where they
came from, and what they
did. These boys are heroes.
Wood said during an
interview.

No one knows how the fire
actually started. Kaila
Lei, one of the girls in the
fire, tells reporters, When I
was playing with my
friends in the church we
saw many cigarettes.

Du r i n g a n e x c l u s i v e
interview, we found out
more about these heroes,
and their life before saving
the young kids.

Cade is an abused boy that
lives with his mother and
f a t h e r . He i s mo r e
commonly known to hang
around greasers and hoods.
He is sixteen years old, and
t hi s young he r o wa s
pronounced dead due to his
injuries in the fire. Cade
was wanted for the murder
of Robert Bob Sheldon.
I dont mind dying now.
Its worth it. Its worth
saving those kids. Is what
Cade writes in a note found
by Curtis.
Curtis is fourteen years old
and lives with his brother
Darry and Sodapop Curtis,
due to the fact that his
parents were killed in a car
crash. He is part of the
greasers and hoods. Darry
Curtis now roofs houses to
help provide for their
f a mi l y, a nd Soda pop
dropped out of school to get
a job at the DX gasoline
station.
What s next for t hese
heroes? There will be a
hearing for Curtis and his
family. This will determine
if Curtis will be placed in a
home, and more about the
murder of Sheldon.
