on the Surat-Dumas Road. The Institute established in
1961 in Gujarat State as one of the Regional Engineering
Colleges, became National Institute of Technology (NIT)
on 4
th
October, 2002. At present, the Institute is offering 7
number of UG and 15 PG programmes in various
disciplines of technology as well as three five Year
Integrated M. Sc. programmes.

Tech and PhD programmes in all the major disciplines of
civil engineering. P.G. Centre in Transportation
Engineering and Planning handles number of the research
and consulting services in diverse fields of highway
engineering, transportation planning and traffic
engineering.

ABOUT IRC-SVNIT RESEACH PROJECT:

The institute has entered into a collaborative research
project on “Speed – Flow Characteristics and Flow
Behaviour under Mixed Traffic Conditions in Indian
Urban Context” with Indian Roads Congress in June,
2007. Study is being carried out in number of metropolitan
cities in India for understanding the mixed traffic flow
behaviour in context of the city growth and transport
network performance under the given land use pattern.

WORKSHOP THEME:

Rapid urbanization and improved socio-economic
status from past few decades has resulted in high
vehicular growth. The Problem become more
severe with mixed traffic behaviour on urban streets
as pedestrian, bicycles, buses, cars, motor
cycles/scooters, auto rickshaw, cycle rickshaw
share the same street space creating inefficient
mobility conditions. Estimation of capacity and level
of service is key to carry out effective traffic and
transportation planning. It does help in traffic control
and regulation as well.

The workshop is aimed to deliberate on approach
and methodology for characterization of urban traffic
and the study of mixed flow behaviour on different
categories of road like arterial, sub-arterial, collector
and local streets. The invited eminent speakers will
present the outcomes of the research carried out in
recent times on the urban traffic study. The
programme will benefit the decision-makers,
professionals from consultancy firms, municipal
traffic engineers, academicians, post graduate
students and research scholars. Major themes of
the workshop are as under:

Urbanisation & Its impact on transport
sector.
Land use impacts on traffic flow.
Hierarchical road classification and
relation to traffic behavior.
Influence of pedestrian traffic.
Traffic flow measurement.
Mixed Traffic flow modeling.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Professionals from consultancy firms, municipal
traffic engineers, academicians, researchers
and students are welcome to attend the
workshop.
