of terrain.
Lakes & rivers, creeks & canyons, mountains
& meadows, wild forests & waterfallstheres

Centennial Plaza
Completed in 2007
Centennial Plaza is a
destination not to miss.
It is located within easy
walking distance of
the historic downtown
area. You can also drive
up either Lincoln Street or Huntoon
Street to the parking area to begin
enjoying the beauty of the plaza. As you
meander through the environmentally
friendly walkways, stop at each of the ten
Interpretative Panels made of porcelain
enamel steel containing historical
information which will give you a great
perspective of how Oroville began.
Incredible vistas from every location
within the plaza allow the visitor to see
the Feather River up close, the big O on
Table Mountain, hear the rush of water
leaving the Feather River Fish Hatchery
or just enjoy a quite-peaceful moment on
one of the many benches and grassy areas.
Native plants and trees are a delight to
see as well as the decorative trellis system
that provides balance to the plaza. The
finishing touch to your visit will be seeing
nine anatomically correct; chrome plated
bronze fish sculptures that depict a group
of salmon in natural swim formation.
Decorative night lighting makes this a
special vista.
The plaza which was designed in honor
of the Citys Centennial is part of a long
term vision for the revitalization of the
historic downtown area. It offers the
base for the many opportunities that the
bordering Feather River provides to the
community. Ultimately, the entire levee
area will connect the Fish Hatchery to
the east, and all that Bedrock Park and
Riverbend Park offer to the west. The
planned Gateway Project at Montgomery
Street & Feather River Blvd and the future
walking and bicycle paths will be a final
enhancement to the plan. The plaza is a
living memorial to be enjoyed by all who
pass thorough it and view the expansive
vistas offered. The plaza is ADA accessible.
A Proposition 40 grant of $3,000,000
and Redevelopment Agency Funds of
$300,000 helped build the plaza. The plaza
was the recipient of the 2008 American
Society of Civil Engineers, Region 9;
Riverfront Urban Transformation Project
of the year.

attraction, dial 530-539-3004 and press 104.

Opened in spring
of 2006, this museum
is the fulfillment of one
mans dream. Bud Bolt
started collecting in
1957 as a way to get shop
students to be more attentive. His idea
was to show the students the difference
between the unweildly old tools their
grandfathers might have used and the
modern ones. The boys did start paying
more attention, and it also sparked,
in Bud, a fascination for old tools that
continues today.

Table Mountain
Table Mtn. Blvd. to Cherokee Rd.,
to the mountaintop
If you havent been to the top of Table
Mountain in the Spring, youve missed a
sight that folks travel from afar to view-the wildflowers in bloom.
Youll see them in multiple sizes and
many shades of yellow, pink, and white
along with the striking bluish-purple
lupines and brilliant golden poppies.
You may also see people flying kites.
If you park your car and hike, please
walk only in designated areas. For the
very hearty, there are many hidden
surprises, including beautiful waterfalls.
For a guide to recognizing and
learning about the wildflowers, buy a
copy of Wildflowers of Table Mountain
- Butte County, California by Samantha
Mackey and Albin Bills, illustrated by
Larry Jansen. The book can be found in
some Chamber of Commerce offices or
by ordering from: Biological Sciences

In 1881, a mining company was

About nine miles north of the Bald

two-story building. This is Mountain

is the only one left of the four that were
on this stretch between Oroville and

If you follow the Oro-Quincy Rd. on
the old Wells Fargo Stage route, which
takes you through Berry Creek, youll
reach Bucks Lake, which is just plain
beautiful any time of the year.
A mile high in the Sierra Nevada,
tall pines, a crystal clear lake, and clean
mountain air are a few of the assets
of this area. You can fish, swim, and
boat during the summer, and enjoy
snowmobiling and cross country skiing
in winter.
In the Spring, the wildflowers are
magnificent, and hunters prefer the
area in the Fall. But our favorite time is
in the summer when the Valley heat is
hovering near 100. We dont fish, swim,
or boat. We just enjoy the air.

WINES
Wine pressing time at Quilici vineyards.
Olives have been a part of the Oroville area for over 100 years starting with
Mrs. Ehmann in 1898. Climate and soil
are particularly adapted to olive culture.
Butte County olives are known the world
over. Oroville, the birthplace of commercial California olive production, claims
a distinct regional flavor and style to its
oil. Several local growers produce world
class olive oils.
The roots of Butte View Olive Company go back to 1935 with 85 acres of
olive trees. Since then, another 65 acres
of trees have been acquired. The orchards
consist mainly of Mission, Ascolona
Manzanella olives. Today Butte View Olive
Company produces up to 1,000 cases of
oil annually and also presses for other
growers in the area.
Lodestar Farms started when Jamie
Johansson purchased 40 acres containing
2,500 olive trees. Originally he sold all of
his fruit, but today bottles under the Lodestar Farms label selling less fruit. Lodestar
produces regular and lemon-flavored
extra virgin olive oil.
Mission Harvest Olive Oil is cold
pressed from 100-year-old olive trees.
The orchard includes 20 acres of mission
olive trees that produce herbaceous fruit
with a slightly buttery flavor and scent.
The Berkeley Olive Grove spans 500
acres of mission olive trees that were
planted by the University of California in
1913. The 500-acre site was chosen for
its unique volcanic soil and climate.
Chaffin Family Orchards is a five
generation family farm located in a
warm air belt that wraps around the
town of Oroville, California. The farm
has been harvesting and producing
olives and olive oil for over 75 years. For
over 50 years the farm has produced beef
cattle, citrus, stone fruits, and avocados.
The farm has raised sheep and poultry
for over 20 years and the meat goats
were begun in 2006.
Founded in 1998 on 733 acres,
California Olive Ranch, a privately held
company, is Americas largest grower and
processor of olive oil. California Olive
Ranch pioneered a relatively new farming method from Spain called Super
High Density Planting. Employing this
method, over a million Spanish and
Greek varietal olive trees grow in hedge
rows 570 to 670 trees per acre vs. traditional plantings of 100 to 150 trees per
acre.

Short-faced Bear: The giant shortfaced bear, Arctodus simus, was one of
the largest land carnivores in North
America during the last two million
years, according to the National Speleological Society.
The common name for the bear originated from its lack of a well-defined forehead, as well as a short, broad muzzle.
Named by American paleontologist
Edward Cope in the 1890s, the giant
short-faced bear was nearly five-feet tall
when walking and more than 11-feet
tall when standing on its hind legs. The
bears autumn weight has been estimated to be about 1,700 pounds, which
includes its collection of fat for the
winter. .
Additional to Copes initial findings
were the remains of eight female shortfaced bears, which have been found in
Potter Creek Cave, located in Shasta
County, Calif.
Saber Tooth Cat: The saber-tooth cat,
Smildon fatalis, entered North America
more than 1 million years ago and was
especially common in California. Weighing in at 840 pounds with up to 8-inch
canines, this animal was certainly no
domestic cat!

Chico Historic
Facts
Chico is the oldest city name in Northern California. Originally, the Bidwells
land was commonly referred to as Small
Creek Ranch. The formal Spanish translation read Rancho Del Arroyo Chico or
Ranch of the little masculine canyon. For
convenience, residents nicknamed the town
Chico.
Tres Hombres (corner of First Street
and Broadway) was formerly John Bidwells
General Store, established in 1860.
The Bidwells took great pride in beautifying the city. It is said that John Bidwell
rode through Chico in his carriage occasionally stopping to plant trees for future
generations to enjoy. He also shipped in
tree seeds from Europe and South America
to add to the diverse agriculture of the land
and provide a tree canopy against the summer heat.
Ringel Park, on the site of what had at
one time been the nursery of John Bidwell,
is located between Main & Broadway on
First Street and is now a relief center for
passengers on the Chico and Butte County
bus systems. The park was dedicated in
1981 to Eugene A. Ringel, a citizen of Chico
who was active in community and civic
activities. On the south side of First is the
Masonic Temple built in 1871.
Childrens Park, (Broadway & First)
given to the city of Chico in 1911, was
dedicated to the children of the community
by Annie Bidwell. Near the First Street
entrance is a marker honoring the citizens
of Chico who died in World War I.
Bidwell Memorial Church, originally
built in 1871 on the corner of Fourth Street
and Broadway, was rebuilt at the First and
Broadway location in 1909.
The Madison Bear Garden (Second &
Salem), formerly the Lusk Home and now a
popular hangout with students, has enjoyed
an interesting history. The home was
built in 1883 by a prominent Chico lawyer.
After his death in 1909, it was passed into
the hands of the Native Daughters of the
Golden West. They sold it to Grand American Faire in 1977. Madison Bear Garden
contains hundreds and perhaps thousands
of antiques.
Chico Railroad Depot & Art Center,
(450 Orange St.), was first built in 1892,
after the 1869 depot was pulled down. It
now serves as a small unattended station
for Amtrak. The walls hold pictures of the
two previous stations. The Art Center is
adjacent to the waiting rooms and features
exhibitions and classes.

A Little History
with Your Apples
Noble Orchards
7050 Pentz Rd.
530-877-4784
Open to the public July through late
Winter
At one time Paradise was known as
Californias apple center, and the first
apple celebration here was in 1880 and
was called the Harvest Home Festival.
Through the years, the festival had many
names and in 1968 it became Johnny
Appleseed Days.
You can still visit an apple orchard
that has producing trees that date
back to the late 1800s. Since 1921 the
Noble Orchards have been producing
apples. Its still family run, and is
the last of such farms on the Ridge.
Seventeen varieties of apples are
harvested from the now 30 acres and 20
acres of peaches and nectarines. Pies for
the Johnny Appleseed Festival are made

Were Your Hospital. You Are Our Priority!
Studies have shown that the faster you are able to receive emergency services the higher the chances of survival
and faster recovery. Being able to stabilize critical patients is key in emergency patient care. BGMH has a strategic relationship with Butte County EMS to ensure the highest quality transfers with an onsite Ambulance and
onsite helicopter transports available.
The new addition will expand our current facility with a separate entry, registration and waiting area attached to
the hospital with a new direct ambulance entry. There will be expanded triage and exam rooms with trauma and
isolation capabilities. To ensure we continue to provide the highest quality patient care our community deserves,
it is necessary to build a new ER and invest in new technology. This technology will include a new digital x-ray
machine and a 64 Slice CT scanner to compliment our recently purchased state of the art MRI.
We're your hospital, You are our priority!
