Some Positive Feedback on Biofeedback
Dear Clients, Family, and Friends,

The human body is amazingly adaptable and capable of learning. When given information about how it is functioning and what to change, it can learn to make adjustments to improve its own performance. Yogis have known this for centuries and have been able to control respiration, skin temperature, and other autonomic nervous system functions. We can learn to do some of the same magic through technology known as “Biofeedback.” There are systems that I use in my office that can be purchased for home use. Sensors are attached to three fingers that track your body's heart rate variability and skin conductance. You feel no discomfort as your levels are transmitted to a computer program which monitors and gradually trains you using interactive procedures. You receive positive feedback (through sight and sound) that you are doing the right thing as amazing things happen on the computer screen. Positive results have been obtained, for example, in ADD/ADHD children and adults treated with Biofeedback. Impulsivity, distractibility and hyperactivity tend to respond well to the training. In some cases, dosage of medication can be sharply reduced or even eliminated as a result of the training. People prone to anxiety and panic can also benefit from the relaxation training and breathing exercises that are part and parcel of the programs described below. Healthy individuals can also increase their optimum performance by means of better concentration, sharpness and perception for academic, business, creative or athletic achievement. This technique of Biofeedback training is known as "Peak Performance" training. Biofeedback software programs with peripheral devices can be costly. The programs that I have used cost anywhere from $50 to $250; notwithstanding, I consider many of them very good investments. I would particularly recommend the purchase of The

Journey to Wild Divine, which costs about $150. This is a unique program for mind & body that links a LightStone or biofeedback hardware with your computer to create a special experience of wellness for your child as well as for the whole family. Wearing three finger sensors that track your body's heart rate variability and skin conductance, you'll learn to use the power of your thoughts, feelings, breath and awareness to: Increase relaxation Reduce stress and anxiety Restore balance and vitality Improve physical & mental wellbeing Once you finish the initial or Passage portion of Journey to Wild Divine, there is a sequel. Wisdom Quest, the second installment in the series, builds on the initial training from The Passage and teaches more advanced and deeper lessons about mind &

body. Children, even those in the autistic spectrum, have found parts of these programs riveting. Both programs can be purchased as a bundle for under $200.

Healing Rhythms is an amazing software program that works with The Journey to Wild Divine LightStone hardware. Whereas the Journey to Wild Divine is more open ended and less didactic, Healing Rhythms takes you through a 15-Step Training Program to learn to reduce stress. Developed in collaboration with the leading experts in the field of wellness, including Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Deepak Chopra, & Dr. Dean Ornish, Healing Rhythms delivers over 30 new mind/body training exercises in a step-by-step, comprehensive program. There is also a Grapher Mode which tracks your body’s signals as they rise and fall in synch with your state of mind. This software package is the best starting point for any adult or teenager who is serious about learning to create a happy mind and healthy body. Once you have the Wild Divine Program and biofeedback hardware, you can also use the new Inner Tube software program from Somatic Visions. I personally recommend this program as a starting point in working with children, even those as young as preschool. In this program, you can navigate through diverse tunnel environments and try to make it out to stunning sky backgrounds before your time runs out using your Wild Divine LightStone! To do this you must control ship speed, fog, power--up size, and music volume by changing your levels of relaxation as shown by skin conductance level and heart rate variability. It helps the user learn to relax and learn to stay calm under pressure, keeping hands dry and heart rate smooth.

Particle Editor also works with the LightStone from The Journey, and it allows you to create, modify, save, load and trade beautiful particle environments that respond to heart-rate variability and skin response. 20 feedback settings can be linked to 6 physiological measurements for millions of feedback combinations. You choose from over 30 professional music pieces or load any .mp3 that you own. Huge background and particle image library lets you easily create new games. One other program bears mentioning: Cyberyoga also uses the LightStone hardware, combining the ancient wisdom of yoga with modern biofeedback technology. In 10 minutes a day, you can dramatically reduce stress, increase energy and improve sleep by participating in this 30 day program. P.S. If you do order any equipment from The Wild Divine Company, they may ask you to name who recommended their programs. I am proud to be an affiliate with their company. Feel free to mention my name as a referral, and also please give them my Affiliate Code# 4721 if they ask. P.S.S. Remember that relaxation techniques are skills. And as with any skill, your ability to relax improves with practice. Be patient with yourself. It takes time to reduce the negative impact of stress on your body and to experience a greater sense of calm in your life. We are so used to being tensed up and hyper-vigilant that some people even experience feelings of emotional discomfort during relaxation exercises. I strongly advise anyone who uses biofeedback to keep a daily diary to monitor use of the treatment as well as how the person feels before, during and after the therapy. This information can then be shared with a physician or therapist to help guide the pace of the treatment. Your eventual goal will be to produce the relaxation responses on your own, outside the therapist's office and without the help of biofeedback technology.
