Learning styles
Various kinds of learning styles have
been identified based on perceptual

Smaldino,2005), such as visual-
spatial, linguistic and

Tactile : 9%
Auditory : 38%
Visual : 31%
Kinesthetic : 22%

The learning styles of pupils vary according
to individuals. The pupils do not like the
monotony of English textbook as in-
classroom-tasks. These tasks are usually
centered on paper-and-pencil activities.
Persistent use of the textbook often results
in the pupils become bored and restless.
The pupils seem to learn best from activities
that incorporate the use of manipulatives.
Using computer and the internet provides
intrinsic motivation. According to Keller
(1987), pupils who are intrinsically
motivated will work harder and learn more
because of their personal interest in the
In addition to that, the pupils like group-
oriented learning activities like role play. As
for the testing, many of the pupils tend to
experience difficulty and anxiety during
written examinations. As a result, the pupils

and Materials
The selection of media and materials
is a process of planning and preparing
the most suitable media and materials
according to the learning topic.

Selection is made based on:

a) Learning topic
b) Activity
c) Teaching approach
The selection of media and materials to be
used in the teaching and learning process
1. The big occupation paper doll
Teacher shows the class the head part of
the paper doll and pastes it on the board.
Then the teacher pastes various kinds of
clothing on the paper doll. Teacher asks the

b. Activity
The activity included in the teaching and
learning process includes group-oriented
activity. During the production stage, the
pupils are required to work as a team to
arrange the focus words correctly in the

appropriate for this class as they will learn
best through activity that involves physical
act as they are going to move about.

c. Teaching Approach
The teaching and learning process uses a
combination of teacher-centered approach
and also pupil-centered approach.
Therefore, the use of worksheets to provide
evaluation for students is appropriate as the
material selection. Sufficient amount of
pupil-centered approach is important as it
gives the pupils the time to apply their
knowledge into the task that they are doing.
Besides that, the electronic presentation
becomes a good media selection as
students are more interested to look at
colorful pictures and interesting audio.
Hence, it will enable the teacher to retain
the pupils attention and maximize the
learning time.

be implemented right according to
the lessons objectives.
There are certain steps to be
checked on in order to fully utilize
the media and materials.

a) Preview material
b) Prepare material
c) Prepare environment
d) Prepare the students
e) Provide learning experience

The steps that are checked on in order
to utilize the media and materials in this
class are:
a) Preview material
The media and materials are checked to
confirm there is no errors or
misconception in the lesson. Teacher
previews the occupation paper doll, the
Microsoft PowerPoint presentation and
the worksheet.

b) Prepare material

before the class starts. Teacher makes
sure that there are no media or
materials forgotten so that the lesson
will go smoothly. Teacher prepares the
slides on the Microsoft PowerPoint
presentation on this topic. Teacher also
books the LCD projector from the
school ICT unit few days beforehand.

c) Prepare environment
Due to the large number of pupils in the
classroom, teacher opts a traditional
classroom arrangement in order to
avoid any unwanted behavioral
problems. By doing so, teacher can
lower the risk of chaotic classroom and
enable the pupils to see the teaching
and learning materials and media
clearly and hear the teacher properly.
During the group activity, teacher can
simply ask few pupils to turn the chair
around so that they can face their peers.
Hence teacher is able to control the
class and ensure that the learning time
can be maximize.

d) Prepare the students
Teacher makes sure that all students
are ready to pay attention before
starting the lesson. This is to make sure
that all students understand the lesson
and do not miss any flow of the teaching
and learning process. In order to attract
the pupils attention, teacher uses the
big occupation paper doll. Teacher
leads the pupils into the topic by asking
questions related to the topic based on
the clothing of the paper doll.

e) Provide learning experience
In order for teacher to recall the pupils
previous knowledge about common
occupation around them, teacher uses
a natural, conversational way of
interrogating the pupils. Teacher also
need to maintain appropriate eye
contact and gesture so that the pupils
will engaged in the lesson. Apart from
that, teacher ensures that the pupils at
the back of the class are able to see the
slides show clearly so that they would
not feel left behind.

a) Learners need to practice what
they have learned.

opportunities to manipulate the
information and allow time for
practice during the demonstration
of the skill.

to be boring.
Evaluate &
1. Evaluation of learners

focus words.
Worksheets are used to evaluate
pupils performance.

Teacher uses the worksheets based on the
topic to check the understanding of pupils
based on what have been taught earlier.

and make them feel interested to
learn throughout the lesson.

The colourful picture, audio and the size of
the font will make the pupils feel interested
to learn. The materials and media used can
