Roman :
Hello , Here to answer automotive questions and make you feel comfortable and become familiar with your product
Roman :
did you check for logged faults after the head job was completed ? you will have to check with a scan tool.\
Roman :
then we can attempt diagnosis procedures
Customer : No I have not. I have an actron obd II I bought like 4 or 5 years ago, is that going to be good enough?
Customer : Maybe I should give you all the history of the situation, car has 167,000 miles, is in good condition, I took it to a local shop in December
2011, The problem was a very bad odor in the cabin, the shop said it was coming from a leak in the battery and they replaced it, they also clean the
ventilation system to get rid of odor, they had replaced the water pump and timing belt about a year ago. The car was running just fine but oil had to be
added often and oil residue was accumulating sticking to oil pan and surrounding struCtures. My son picked up the ca from shop r and drove it for five
days. He detected nothing unusual. When I got the car it overheated after XX XXXXXXX XXXXX and had all the symptoms of a blown head gasket.
Thengine running fairly well and strong but overheating and bubling in coolant compartment. The shop confirmed the diagnosis, I did change gasket
myself. I took the heads to be checked, cleaned and reconditioned by a local well known shop that specializes in German engines. I replaced timing belt
with a kit from Blauparts and replaced water pump also. After all of this following cleaning the engine outside I discovered a small hole in the block on
the driver side close to the undergarment. It looks like a tool like a socket rubbed to hard against this area of the metal on the block thinning the metal
causing a small perforation that allows oil to scape. I plugged the hole with jb weld and it seem well sealed but that area can not be seen now that I
installed the front end. (I know this was not one of my brightests ideas) then I put everything together and stater the engine, some oil does scape
while engine is on, it stater right away but it sounds like valve noise, I have a recording of the noise. The engine sounded almost fine when you reveed
a little over 2000 rpm so I did for like 5 min because it was like it needed oil to get up to the heads. The temperature was just getting up a little so I
revved it a little more close to 3000 rpm (not a good idea I know) an suddenly bubbling stating again on the coolant reservoir. I turned it off and turned
back on an hour later and no bunking occurred but continue making the valve sound. I am worried a blew the gasket somehow again.
Roman :
Is the check engine light on ? that tool will allow you to read and erase the faults only. Check and let me know what they are.
Customer : Can not find my scan tool. I will have to get one. Which one would you recommend?
Roman :
if you have a laptop ross tech is the best http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/cat/VCDS.html
Roman :
$350.00 one is fine
Roman :
http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCKII.html this one will work just as well
Customer : So the page you sent me is for a key II USB interface for $249 but you mention the $350 so you meant the hex-USB+can interface?
Roman :
you cab use either one. How much do you want to spend ? if you have USB and it works for your model year you are good to go. check the details to
make sure which one you should get .
Roman :
you want CAN since your car is a CAN BUS system
Roman :
how is it going ?
Customer : I ordered the scan tool, it will not be delivered til next week
Customer : Is there anything else I can do in the meantime? If I can not fix the engine I figured I could replace it with an used one. Would that be
reasonable?
Roman :
you can always replace the engine. but if you want to know what is wrong the timing might be off this is why I ask for the faults. Lets check the faults
first before condemning the engine.
Customer : There is a problem. It seems that the scan tool won't be delivered until Friday 4/20 and I will not get back to where the car is at til after may
1st. Is it ok to respond after may 1st?
Roman :
yeah if it times out you will have to relist , but you will not be charged unless you accept. that is how it works
Customer : Still waiting for the scanner you recommended , I'll relist as you called it, thx
Roman :
ok, when you get the tool let begin to diagnose the the fault memory first and continue from there
Customer :
got the fault codes
Customer :
16684
Customer :
16686, 18010, 16501,17511, 16687, 16685, 16689
Roman :
ok I will have to get back to this this afternoon
Roman :
What are the p codes ?
Customer :
I had a question open with Roman about an engine problem on an Audi A4 Quattro 2003 3.0
Last time we discussed getting the P codes so here they are
P0300-008 Random multiple cylinder misfire

Roman :
P0117-001 Enfine coolant temp sensor G 62 signal too low intwermiottent--- replace this failed coolant temp sensor
Roman :
6 cylinder ? have you replaced all of the failed ign. coils ? there is a known problem with all of the ignition coils on every Audi and VW.
Roman :
How many miles ?
Roman :
If replacing the coils does not completly sole the misfire fault , which it should. You will need to perform a combustion chamber / fuel injector service.

169000 miles but I did replaced coils not sure if all of them a year ago, battery is well charged but these codes where there already and I had
battery disconnected for a while. I supposs the oxygen sensor and coil if malfunctioning could explain the engine running rough but there is a
noise like valve noise that is insettling
you must replace the arcing ign. coils. the 02 is failed due to a bad heater circuit which will prevent the system from reaching closed loop fuel
status while the rest of the system functions normally.
I' just need some clarification , is there a way to test the ignition coils? They are expensive and I change them all a year ago, should I identify
if only one or two of them are bad?
Also how do I know which 02 sensor is bad? Aren't there several of them?
Is there a diagram or something like that to help me know where the sensor is located? Do i replace the sensor or do i focus on the circuit that
supplies power to it? And how do I do that?I don't know where the bad coolant sensor is either, thx
Yes, they are very expensive, look online aftermarket coils are sometimes better than original.
You will have to use the scanner go to 01 engine MVB 14,15,16 and check to see which coils are misfiring. Replace the failed part. P1103 Oxygen lambda
sensor heating B1 S1 performance too low intermittent Bank 1 = cylinders 1-3 Sensor 1 = the front sensor The heater circuit failed inside the sensor,
that is what the fault states. And it is 99.9% of the time correct. The coolant sensor is located here;

I don't know how to access MvB14 15 16
Can you give me a more detailed explanation to use scanner to determine which coils are misfiring? Please
ifigured out, here are results

Thx I will do and check the oxygen sensor as well
P0117-001 Engine coolant temp sensor G 62 signal too low intermittent
THE cts is failing and may also be sending false information to the ECM because it takes too long to heat up and reach closed loop.
P1103 Oxygen lambda sensor heating B1 S1 performance too low intermittent

Same reason the 02 sensor has a failed heater circuit will not allow the system to reach closed loop. All of these faults are screwing up the fuel
trim
