JESUS OF NAZARETHILLEGAL-TAX PROTESTER
By Ned NettervilleAnd Many Other Contributors
ACCORDING TO THE GOSPEL OF LUKE,THIS IS HOW THE TRIAL OF JESUS COMMENCED:
“Then the entire assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate. They began to accuse him saying, ‘We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor...’”–
Luke Ch. 23, ver. 1
Did Pilate execute Jesus for teaching his followers that taxes violate God’scommandment, “Thou shall not steal?” At the time he was killed, thenumber of Jesus’ disciples was increasing daily as he worked miracles of healing among the poor in Galilee and Judea. Some of his followers whotook his words to heart and began living his way of life may have resistedCaesar’s tax. Clearly, the principles that Jesus preached constituted aserious threat to tax revenues in Judea and Galilee, and even threatenedthe existence of Rome as a nation-state.In addition to being the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate was the procurator of tax revenues for Judea, a position analogous to a United States DistrictDirector of Internal Revenue. Pilate obviously could not allow a notorioustax resister to continue preaching inflammatory anti-tax rhetoric in his taxdistrict, lest he lose his lofty position and perhaps even lose his head. Sohe took the pragmatic course and crucified Jesus.
