What do the clothing codes tell you?

The clothing used on my cover are typical clothes a student would wear, they are athletic and suit
the purpose well. They appeal to the target audience as they may wear similar clothes, giving a
sense of address. The splash of blue on the jacket is also of a similar colour to parts of the main
image, namely the purple panel of the Hampton building.
What are their facial expressions? Why?
The facial expression is a half-smile, as would be expected from a student, it reflects the main
coverline, which talks about surviving the first week. I aimed to create the effect of enjoyment at
college, whilst still realistically representing the responsibility and workload.
What is their posture? Why?
The person of interest on the cover is standing tall, with upright posture, this is proven to be more
appealing. His stance connotes positivity and will to learn, both of which are important when the
product reflects on the college.
What role and stereotypes are being represented or challenged? Does the image conform
with or challenge conventional ideas of male/female young/old etc?
The stereotypes of students complaining about school and college is reflected in the half-smile of the
models face. This also reflects the ideas of angsty teenage males.
Is the representation of race significant in your image?
No, race plays no role in the cover, which would have worked with a model of any race, providing
they were 16-18.
Who is the magazine aimed at? How do we know?
Teenage students of the college, as the only content the magazine covers is college news and
articles.
What have you done to attract the target audience?
The magazine features coverlines pertaining to articles that college students would find interesting
or helpful to them, so it is in their best interest to buy the magazine. The colours are bright which is
eye catching, and are the same colours used by the college as the predominant colour scheme. The
model of the cover is a sixteen year old student, who makes a direct address via eye contact with the
potential reader, inviting them to buy the magazine. The masthead features the magazine name
The Buzz, another word for gossip, which implies it has the news the students need to know,
making it more attractive to them and enhancing desirability, which will increase demand for the
product.
How have you made use of both text and image to address the intended audience?
The text is bold and easy to read, having utilised the stroke feature to provide an outline on solid
white text, this reduces complication and speeds up reading time, which makes the target audience
more likely to read the magazine. The main images features a direct address, as mentioned before,
which appeals to potential readers as they can connect with the model. The images of the contents
feature the college infrastructure, which students would know and associate with, as well as another
student studying in the library, promoting independent study.
