dga ra ba na dge slo gi dge dun ma po da thabs cig tu bugs

This is what I've heard: Once, the Blessed One was staying at
rvast, in Prince Jeta's Grove, in Anatapiada's pleasure
garden, together with a community of many monks.

Then one morning, the Blessed One put on his upper and lower
robes, took his begging bowl and went into the city of rvast to
gather alms.

po che dag sa rdul gyi khyim da | sa rdul gyi ra ba da | sa rdul
gyi kha pa brtsegs pa dag gis rtse i khod pa las byis pa phal

mtho o ||
At that time, outside the city of rvast, a group of young children
who were sitting and playing, making houses, courtyards and
castles out of sand, saw the Blessed One approaching in the
distance.
mtho nas kya lhag par dga ba da | rab tu dga ba da | yid
bde ba skyes te rtse dga i khod do ||
When they saw the Blessed One, they were delighted, overjoyed.
They continued to sit, playing happily.

na khyeu de dag rtse i khod pai sa phyogs der gegs so ||
Then the Blessed One, out of compassion for the children, went
over to them.

bya ba ig bcom ldan das kyi abs la phyag tshal nas | bcom
ldan das kyi spyan sar dug go ||
Then one of the boys, named Brahmar, payed homage at the
feet of the Blessed One, and sat down before him.
de nas bcom ldan das kyis mkhyen bin du byis pa de dag la di
skad ces bka stsal to || byis pa khyed di na (4) ci byed |
Then the Blessed One, although he already knew the answer,
asked the children: What are you children doing?
de skad ces bka stsal pa da | bcom ldan das la khyeu de dag
gis di skad ces gsol to || bcom ldan das bdag cag di na sa rdul
gyi khyim dag da | sa rdul gyi ra ba dag da | sa rdul gyi kha pa
brtsegs pa dag gis rtse i mchis lags so ||
The children answered: Blessed One, we are sitting here and
playing, making houses, courtyards and castles out of sand.
de nas bcom (5) ldan das la khyeu tshas pai dpal gyis di skad
ces gsol to || bcom ldan das bdag la thugs brtse bai slad du sa
rdul gyi kha pa brtsegs pa di bes su gsol |
Then Brahmar said to him: Blessed One, please accept this
sandcastle as a gift, out of compassion for me.
de nas bcom ldan das kyis khyeu tshas pai dpal gyi lhag pai
bsam pa da | dga bai sems thugs (6) su chud nas thugs brtse
bai phyir sa rdul gyi kha pa brtsegs pa de bes so ||
The Blessed One saw that Brahmar's intentions were sincere
and that his spirit was joyful, and so out of compassion, he
accepted the sandcastle.
de nas sas rgyas kyi mthus skad cig de da | yud tsam de la sa
rdul gyi kha pa brtsegs pa de rin po che sna bdun las grub pai
kha pa brtsegs pa ig tu gyur nas | bcom ldan das kyi spyan sa
Then, at that moment, at that very instant, the sandcastle in front
of the Buddha was transformed by his power into a castle made of
the seven kinds of jewels.

The castle had 84,000 golden pillars on its eastern side, 84,000
silver pillars on its southern side, 84,000 pillars of bairya on its
western side, and 84,000 pillars of crystal on its northern side.

When the boy Brahmar saw this marvel, he became even more
delighted, and great joy arose in him.

Then he broke into verse:
kye ma jig rten mgon po yis || rdzu phrul in tu rgya chen bstan ||
bdag id la ni thugs brtsei phyir || sas rgyas kyis ni rdzu phrul
bstan || 1 ||
1. O, the Savior of the world
Has displayed a magnificent prodigy
Out of compassion for me
The Buddha has displayed a miracle.
dra sro che la bdag gis ni || sa rdul kha brtsegs phul ba de ||
rin po che las grub par gyur || kye ma (3) sas rgyas bsam mi
khyab || 2 ||
2. The sandcastle
That I offered to the Great Sage
Has been transformed into jewels
O, how inconceivable is the Buddha.
kye kye i ni di dra ba || sas rgyas i ni bla med pa ||
mig med mig ni ams pa da || es rab chu us mi es so || 3 ||
3. O, O, such a field is this.
The field of the Buddha is unsurpassed.
The blind, those with no vision, and those of little wisdom
Cannot conceive of this.
rka gis dam pa gro bai i || di ni bdag gis red pa da ||
dal ba rab dkon thob pas na || bya chub tu ni smon lam (4) gdab
|| 4 ||
4. The Best of Men is the field for sentient beings.
This field has been obtained by me.
Having gained this rare opportunity,
I plant the seeds of Awakening.

bla med bya chub thob nas ni || rdzu phrul di dra bdag gis bgyi

5. O guide, I aspire to develop your qualities.
When I have attained
Unsurpassed Awakening,

I will perform such marvels.

Then the Blessed One smiled, and rays of color blazed from his
mouth: blue, yellow, red, white, crimson, crystal and silver.

log nas bcom ldan das la lan gsum bskor ba byas te | bcom ldan
das kyi (6) dbui gtsug tor du nub par gyur to ||
These rays, having blazed forth, rose as far as the Brahmaloka,
returned, circled the Blessed One three times, and vanished into
the crown of his head.

Then nanda spoke to the Blessed One in verse:
rgyal mchog dren pa gro bai gtso bo rnams || rgyu ma mchis par
dzum pa mi mdzad na ||
thugs rje ldan pa jig rten sman smad du || de dir ci phyir dzum
(7) mdzad bdag la gsus || 6 ||
6. The Supreme Conquerors, the Leaders, the Best of Men,
Do not smile without reason.
Compassionate One, for the benefit the world,
Explain to us now why you have smiled.

kun dga bo la di skad ces bka stsal to || kun dga bo khyod kyis
khyeu tshas pai dpal di mtho am |
The Blessed One replied to the Venerable nanda: nanda, do
you see this boy, Brahmar?
gsol pa bcom ldan das mtho lags so || He answered: I see him.
bcom ldan das kyis (201a1) bka stsal pa | kun dga bo khyeu di
dge bai rtsa ba di da | sems kyi smon pa dis ni bskal pa sum
sto is brgyai bar du nams kya sems can dmyal bar gro bar mi
gyur ro ||
The Blessed One said: nanda, this boy, because of his
aspiration and his roots of virtue, will not go to the hell-realms for
3,200 eons.
des bya chub bsgrubs nas de bin gegs pa dgra bcom pa ya
dag (2) par rdzogs pai sas rgyas jig rten thams cad las mon
par phags pa es bya bar gyur ro || es gsus so ||
When he has attained Awakening, he will become a Tathgata, an
Arhant, a Fully Awakened Buddha named *Sarvalokbhyudgata,
"He who has Transcended the Entire World".

The Blessed One then spoke these verses:
sas rgyas la ni dad pa yis || bsod nams chu u skye mi gyur || 7. No small merit is produced

The same is true of listening to the Supreme Dharma
And of honoring the Sagha.

bya || 8 ||
8. For one with faith in the Buddha
Awakening is not hard to obtain.
Therefore those who seek Awakening here
Should make offerings to the Guides of the World.
kun dga khyeu di rka gis kyi || mchog ste dpal da ldan pa (4)

mon par phags pa es bya ba || jig rten gyi ni dren par gyur ||
9 ||
9. nanda, this boy will become
the Best of Men, A Guide of the World
named *Abhyudgata,
Glorious One.
de ltar sas rgyas bsam mi khyab || sas rgyas chos kya de
bin te ||
bsam mi khyab la dad pa yi || rnam par smin paa de bin no ||
10 ||
10. The Buddhas are inconceivable.
So too is their Dharma,
And the ripening of the deeds
Of those with faith in the inconceivable.
bcom ldan das kyis de skad ces bka stsal nas | tshe da (5) ldan
pa kun dga bo da | khyeu tshas pai dpal bcom ldan das kyis
gsus pa la yi ras te mon par bstod do || ||
When the Blessed One had pronounced this teaching, the
Venerable nanda, and the boy Brahmar were delighted, and
praised his words highly.

dge ba dpal gyis bsgyur | rgya gar gyi mkhan po bidykarasiha
da | u chen gyi lotstsha ba bande deba tsandras us te gtan la
phab pa |
