The People of Sabah
Sabah is a unique land, a melting pot of many groups. The population is slightly over 1.7
million comprising over 30 different races and over 80 different dialects. Each group has its own
culture, tradition, festival and costume.
The largest ethnic group, the Kadazans and Dusuns make up about one third of the
population and are found mainly on the west coast. They are agriculturist and the main rice
producers of Sabah.
The Bajaus are skilled fishermen and farmers, living both on the east and west coast of
Sabah. They are also skilled horsemen and have been dubbed The Cowboys of the East.
The Muruts live mostly in the south west region of Sabah and in remote parts between the
town of Keningau and the borders of Sarawak and Indonesia. Many still live in longhouses and were
once feared for their head-hunting. Besides being good with their beadwork, they are also great
hunters, using spears, blowpipes and poisoned darts.
