Section A [45 marks]
Answer all questions in this section.
1. In a study of the use of mobile phones among students, a random sample of 11 students was
examined for a particular week. The total lengths of calls, in minutes, made by 11 students
were as follows.
17, 23, 35, 36, 51, 53, 54, 55, 60 , 77, 110
(a) Find the median and quartiles for the data above. [3 marks]
(b) Show that the length of call of 110 minutes is the only outlier. [2 marks]
(c) Construct a boxplot and describe the distribution displayed by the data. [3 marks]
2. (a) A team of 4 members is to be selected from 8 students. Among the 8 students, two
students are with age 15 to 18 years old and six students are below 15 years. The rules allow at
most one member with age 15 to 18 years old. How many different selections are possible?

On a particular day, Johan goes to the park after 5.00 pm; find the probability that there is no
homework on that day. [4 marks]
3. The number of fatal accidents occurring along a certain stretch of the highway in a week can
be modeled by a Poisson distribution with a mean of 1.4
(a) Find the probability that in any one week chosen at random, less than 3 fatal accidents
occur. [3 marks]
(b) Find the probability that more than 5 fatal accidents happen in any 3weeks period.

3 6 5 4 6 10 9
Sales Revenue
(RM million), y
25 30 29 26 30 40 38
(a) Determine the Spearmans coefficient of rank correlation between the advertising
expenses and sales revenue and interpret. [4 marks]
(b) Find the linear regression equation y = a + bx and explain the value of b. [6 marks]

(a) By using 2011 as the base year, calculate the Laspeyres quantity index and the Paasche
price index for year 2012 [4 marks]
(b) Determine whether the quantity sold or price of the stationeries contributes more to
the growth of the company. [2 marks]
