4th Year Options – ’07-08 School Year Mechanical Program

• Pre-registration for next year • Mechanical Program Options

LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Pre-registration
• Pre-registration – it is important that you pre-register, as this “guarantees” you a spot in a 4th year course. • Scheduling uses pre-registration numbers to allocate lecture halls for our courses. • If you want to switch 4th courses, you can do so in August, but we are limited to room sizes. • More Info: my.ryerson.ca for deadlines, etc.

LEADERS OF TOMORROW

4th Year Mechanical Program
• 4 Different Streams
– Manufacturing – Mechatronics – Solids – Thermo/Fluids

LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Manufacturing
• If you want to work in Manufacturing as a plant engineer, project engineer, line engineer, etc. • Manufacturing has lost >100,000 jobs in the last 3 years in Ontario. • However, equipment sales is up, exports are up, and automotive spiked 7.7% up 4th quarter - 2006. • High Cdn$$ has meant manufacturing companies are buying new machine tools, automation, etc., ie. need for engineers. • This has lead to an increase of about 6% in labour productivity in the manufacturing sector. • Job market is very strong right now for engineers.

LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Mechatronics
• Controlling mechanical devices with electrical controls. • Areas of automation and “robotics” • Only for students who like EES512/612. • Fall course - Microprocessors programming • Job market good, companies like Magna, Linamar, etc. for design & manufacturing of servo controlled devices.
LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Solids Stream
• More machine design. • If you want to design car/truck parts (part supplier companies) • If you want to start your own company. • If you’re a “gear head” • You typically end up working in 1st/2nd tier manufacturing company.
LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Thermo/Fluids
• HVAC – heating and air conditioning area
– Jobs in consulting firms, manufacturers

• Power Generation
– Ontario Hydro (OPG, etc) – New “green” technologies

• Jobs
– growing sector as new power generation plants are on the books. – Building boom requires HVAC engineers
