The Miri Jazz Festival 2008 brings together different styles & exotic versions of jazz bands from Europe & Africa in the seaside of Resort City of Miri. Two days of great jazz, funky, latin, oriental jazz, carribean roots, blues, boogie woogies... all in the intimacy of the Pavillion set against the backdrop of a tropical seaside & the distant calls of the mighty rainforest. The event will be held from 9-10 May 2008.

ITINERARY Day 1 (9 May) Friday Meet and greet upon arrival at Miri International Airport. Transfer to Hotel. Transfer to the Pavillion at ParkCity Everly Hotel to participate in the Jazz Festival. Overnight in hotel. Day 2 (10 May) Saturday Breakfast at the hotel. Day free to relax or discover the town on your own. In the evening, transfer to the Pavillion at ParkCity Everly Hotel to participate in the Jazz Festival. Return to the hotel at the end of the show. Overnight in hotel. Day 3 (11 May) Sunday Explore Miri as well as its outlying areas on your own. Optional tours available. Transfer to airport for onward flight. (Package extension can be arranged if required)

Diamond Dave and the Doodaddies [from Australia]
Coming from Perth, Australia, Diamond Dave and the Doodaddies play Chicago style blues jazz music with uplifting grooves, swinging shuffles and soulful beat. With two albums to their credit, this fourpiece band has also performed in a number of highly commendable live shows in and around Perth.

Rumba Calzada [from Canada]

Be ready to salsa to the upbeat jazz tempo of Rumba Calzada. This Vancouver-based band will be playing, mostly original, jazz music with beats of Latin, Salsa and Afro-Cuban. Currently led by Raphael Geronimo from the Philippines, this seven-piece band was formed in 1991 by Raphael's father Boying. A favourite with Vancouver's Latin jazz and Salsa enthusiasts, Rumba Calzada had been nominated for various music awards in Canada and had just released their fourth album in June last year.

Charmaine Clamor is the first Filipina jazz singer to find success on American radio with her debut album entitled "Searching for the Soul" released in 2005. With her powerful and sultry vocal, it is not surprising that Clamor is often compared to the best jazz performers like Sarah Vaughan, Anita Baker and Cassandra Wilson. Coming from a musically talented family, Clamor began singing at the tender age of three. Back then, her "stage" was the bus which she took from her hometown of Subic-Zambales to Manila. Her experience entertaining the bus passengers had moulded her into becoming an accomplished singer. With two albums under her belt, the latest was released last year, Clamor is set to woo the crowd in Miri with her warm, luscious and sultry alto voice.

Habana Sax [from Cuba]

Due to popular crowd demand, this fivepiece band from Cuba is making a come back to the Miri International Jazz Festival. Led by Jorge Almeida, Habana Sax play jazz tunes with influence of energetic Cuban rhythms. They were among the eight bands that performed at Miri International Jazz Festival 2007. Formed in the late 80s, Habana Sax is made of up multi-instrumentalists who are all graduates of the prestigious Superior Institute of Art and Culture of Cuba. Apart from playing good music, Habana Sax is also known for their act of changing instruments when performing. In fact this act of changing instruments is sometimes the highlight of their act.

Mood Indigo [from UK]

A swinging jazz band, Mood Indigo is expected to capture the spirit and energy of festival goers who are out for an amazing time. Fronted by the smooth and innovative vocal style of Will Grealish, Mood Indigo also plays a wide repertoire of jazz beats including blues. With an album ("God Bless the Child") to their name, Mood Indigo is all out to woo festival goers to swing, swoon, jump and glide to their beat.

T'INVENTIELKE [from Holland] *

OMA SOUND [from Japan] *

This 16-piece band is a jazz street band from Holland. Formed by a group of friends who are passionate about music, the band play original, modern, popclassic and alternative jazz beat. Their performances also include well choreographed dance movement to liven up the festival mood.

This five-piece band from the Land of the Rising Sun will present the unique Japanese jazz music. Lead by an accomplish bassist Isao Suzuki, this band also perform progressive jazz. Suzuki will use his more than 50 years of experience in performing various genre of jazz music to woo the crowd.

AMAR SUNDY [from Algeria]

Borneo Jazz Quartet [from
Sarawak] Nearer to home, Sarawak's very own Borneo Jazz Quartet is an up and coming band to look out for. Young and talented, the four-piece band play jazzy tunes infused with funky and Latin beat. They also have several original compositions which they will definitely present at the coming festival.

Blue man in birth. Blues man by choice. That is how Amar Sundy described himself and his passion for blues music. A self-taught guitarist, Amar's music is a mixture of Chicago blues laced with his Tuaregs root that originated from the Sahara Desert. Coming a long way into the international music scene after his family moved to France when he was a young boy, Amar had played alongside the big names in blues music. To name the few, they include BB King, Jimmy Johnson, Otis Rush, James Cotton and Albert Collins. An accomplish songwriter and guitarist, Amar had four albums to his credit.
