Serving the Community since 1985
Presidents Report

One can clearly see how years of radio and televi-
sion experience can polish an ability to speak in
public, as Greg Evans kept us captivated with his
talk. Greg and his wife Sue have certainly had an
interesting life and we thank them for sharing some
of the more interesting stories. The one comment I
heard from many was the surprise at how heavy
the Logie was, which Greg brought along for the
many photo opportunities.

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting the CEO
of Bayside Council, Adrian Rob along with the pres-
idents of Hampton, Brighton and Brighton North.
We discussed many aspects of Council, and I had
the opportunity to raise our Farmers Market pro-
posal. This was the first exploratory meeting of its
type for Multi District clubs to meet with our Council
CEO. It was agreed at the conclusion that we
would continue the concept.

We supported Hampton Rotary by attending their
Trivia night on Thursday (see photo). Unfortunately
we didn’t win the coveted silver hook, but had a
great night and took away some good ideas that we
might try at out next Trivia night. Thanks to mem-
bers, partners and Trish’s group who participated

As I mentioned at our meeting, we will trial the
Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron for our Christ-

. This in no way
reflects on Victoria Golf Club as we truly value
it as our main location. However we do need to
find a comparable venue to have in reserve for
those times we cannot be at VCG, and the
Beaumaris Motor Yacht squadron seems the
best alternative we can find that is close by.
Please put this in your calendars as we want to
aim for a strong turnout.

Next week we will have the opportunity to hear
Deb Lillie, the President of Beaumaris Lions,
speak. It is important to understand what other
service clubs are doing in our area. Kerrie
Geard is in the chair.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday.

It’s not often that history is rewritten.
Greg Evans has done it twice in two mediums,
television and radio.

The highly popular television personality is best
known as host of Perfect Match, the show the
rewrote the television history books, achieving
an unbeatable rating of 39 in a 5:30pm timeslot.
The hilarious TV dating show ran from 1984 to
1989, took a break in 1990 then returned in
1991 as Blind Date again with Evans at the
helm.

Greg hosted 1,400 episodes of the show earn-
ing himself nominations for TV Weeks Gold Lo-
gie as Australia’s Most Popular Celebrity on 3
occasions and making him a household name.
Greg has hosted 11 of his own television
shows, including Star Search and Say G’day
and appeared in countless others.

His career began in radio where he also scored
in the ratings stakes, for his radio success.
Greg was awarded the TV Week Rock Awards
“Most Popular DJ Award” for six consecutive
years from 1978 to 1983. During this time he
hosted the drive time show on 3XY and inter-
viewed just about every rock band and celebrity
performer who toured Australia during those
years.

Over the years Greg has been highly visible in
his work for charity.

He is a former President of the Variety Club of
Australia (Victorian region) and is a Life Am-
bassador for Australia Day.

Greg is currently Melbourne’s Premier Marriage
Celebrant having married hundreds of couples.

He continues to support many charities and is
regularly seen as a guest on Australian televi-
sion and radio shows.

Greg entertained his audience with the warmth
and skill you would expect from such a sea-
soned professional. A journey through his life
seasoned with anecdotes of the people he met
along the way.

He traced his journey from school days when
he practiced as a DJ at home, a brief lunch
time endeavour at Aspendale tech spinning
records to raise money for charity (until the
neighbours complained about the noise), via
the Myer Melbourne Ladies shoe department
and then on to an apprenticeship in Country
radio in Colac, Maryborough and finally Ka-
toomba. From then he entered his highly suc-
cessful phase as a “big city” DJ in Melbourne.

He entered television through a guest spot on
the Ray Martin show and eventually this led to
his own show on Channel 10.

His most entertaining and involved anecdote
concerned how he left Channel 10 for Channel
9 at the height of his popularity. But as Greg
wishes to reserve this for a possible biography
down the road we will not be sharing it with you
here.

Just goes to show what you miss if you do not
come along to the meeting.
