Rebuilding the Church in Gaza
The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of
Jerusalem is coordinatng a response from the Church
to assist the Catholic communites in Gaza to rebuild
afer the recent tragic events. The Order is the
primary source of funds to support the Latn
Patriarchate of Jerusalem (the local diocese), and the
task of assistng the reconstructon in Gaza is
immense. It is for that reason the Order, with the
support and encouragement of Bishop Bill, is
extending this appeal to local Catholic communites.
This appeal provides an opportunity to support the
people of the Holy Land in this tme of need.

If you would like to make a contributon to this appeal,
please place it an envelope and send it either directly
to the Parish Ofce or on either of the collectons over
the coming weekends. Please be aware that it will not
be possible to claim a tax deducton for donatons
made to this appeal as the Order does not enjoy
charitable status in Australia.

If you would like further informaton on the
Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem,
you can visit www.eohjsaustralia.org or speak with Fr
Andrew.

From the Pastors Desk
Today we celebraton the Commemoraton of the All
the Faithful Departed, also known as All Souls Day, a
celebraton which had its origin in the Middle Ages
with the annual prayers for the dead in monastc
communites.

The day, which quickly became one of the principal
celebratons in the Churchs liturgical calendar,
expresses Christan faith in the communion of saints
and the ongoing need for members of the Church to
pray for one another. This need to pray does not end
with death, and indeed contnues in a special way for
those of our brothers and sisters who have gone
before us in faith.

The custom of remembering the faithful departed in
prayer that lies at the heart of All Souls Day extends
across the whole of the month of November.

Over the weekends of November our Book of
Remembrance will be placed on the altar during all of
our Sunday Masses as a visible sign of our prayers for
our brothers and sisters who have died. If you would
like to add the name of a relatve or friend to the Book
of Remembrance, it will be available before and afer
Mass in order for you to do so.

On Thursday 20th November, we will celebrate our
Annual Remembrance Mass in the Forster Church.
Further details will appear in Bridgeside Bulletn over
the coming weeks.

Our Christan duty to pray for the dead, however,
does not end with those we have known and loved,
our family and friends.

In light of the state of the world, perhaps we might
like to consider remembering in prayer during the
month of November all those who have died as a
result of disease, from violence and war, and as a
result of persecutonto name but a few. Such an
undertaking would only be right and proper.

Of even more import however might be to undertake
to pray for those who have no one lef to pray for
them, no one to mourn them, no one to remember
they lived. Unfortunately, there are far too many
people who fall into this category.

Death plays no favourites, and neither should we
when it comes to praying for those who have died.

Untl next week Fr Andrew

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let your perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.

Secretaries Aint Secretaries Anymore
In past tmes Parishes would be on the lookout for a
person (generally a woman) to assist the Priests in the
running of the Parish. This woman was ofen given the
ttle of Parish Secretary and her job descripton was to
answer the phone, be hospitable to visitors, type the
Bulletn and perhaps make some lunch for Father if he
was hungry.
Times have changed. I recently atended a Secretary/
Parish Leader Informaton Day in our Diocese. There
were six items on the Agenda as follows.
Record Keeping Requirements. Details of Deaths,
Marriages, Baptsms and Confrmatons as well as
RCIA data need to be accurately recorded both in
Parish Registers and on computers. Enquiries from
the public need to be suitably and adequately
answered.
Catholic Church Insurances. Secretaries need a
nodding acquaintance with the intricacies of
Insurance Policies, Public Liability, Volunteer
Workers Coverage, etc etc.
PADRE. This is the new Parish computer system for
storing Parish Rolls, Planned Giving Receipts and
Parish Registers. Secretaries need to be efcient in
the operaton of this system.
Copyright. Causing a headache for all is the issue of
Copyright. It is a mater of justce that artsts receive
fair acknowledgement and compensaton for their
works. Each tme we use any of their product we
must, by law (apart from the justce element),
acknowledge that contributon. This is tme
consuming at the very least.
Work Health & Safety. Closely following in the
headache department is the issue of workplace
safety. Again a lot of tme and efort and educaton
is involved in following Government Legislaton in
this area.
Child Protecton. We must be vigilant in this area.
We must do all we can to ensure the sins of the past
are not repeated. However, requestng volunteers to
carry out the necessary legal requirements is ofen
met with resistance. There are confdental records
to be kept in this area.
As well as the phone, the Bulletn and a few
sandwiches for Father, these are some of the
responsibilites of todays Parish Secretary.
To adequately cover any one of these areas would
occupy at least one full day seminar. At the Diocesan
level each of these six areas are the responsibility of a
diferent person or in some cases a team of people. In
the Parishes they are all overseen by one or two
Secretaries.
If we are to contnue the primary purpose of the
Church, spreading the love of Jesus Christ, and
simultaneously fulfll the legal requirements thrust
upon us, parishioners must do what they can to
cooperate in the operaton of these administratve
functons.

Greg Byrne
Welcome!
