Lisa lived in a house in the middle of
eight terraces. She had a lovely garden
in her frontyard which was full of sweet
smelling, colourful flowers. Lisa’s garden
shone like a jewel in the dull city street,
until one summer when the city was hit
by the worst drought in twenty years.
Every day the garden baked in the sun.
Lisa watered it morning and night but
the garden began to wither in the
blistering heat. She decided the garden
needed more water but there was no
tap in the front yard. Lisa went to the
hardware store and bought two hoses
which she joined together. Twice a day
she connected the hose to the tap
in the backyard and snaked it through
the kitchen, the dining room, the hallway
and out through the front door. In this
way Lisa could soak her thirsty garden.
One day a neighbour stopped to chat
and Lisa turned the nozzle to stop the
water running. They had been chatting
for ten minutes when the neighbour
looked towards the front door. The
horrified look on her neighbour’s face
made Lisa swing around. Water was
cascading down the front step. She
rushed into the house followed by her
neighbour. There they saw a fountain
spurting from the connection in the
hose and a lake which stretched down
the hallway and into the dining room
and kitchen.
Lisa splashed to the back of the house
and turned off the tap. When she
returned to the house she stood
helplessly in the middle of the flood and
started to cry.
‘Don’t worry,’ said her neighbour. He left
her standing ankle deep in water and
came back with some more neighbours
who helped clean up the mess.
A couple of days after the flood a man
who lived a few doors away knocked
on her door. On his blue overalls
was written Wilsons Plumbing Services.
‘I think you need a tap out the front. I
can put it on in a jiffy.’
Lisa didn’t know how to thank him. Now
her garden would survive the drought.

The sounds of English
Understanding the phonemic alphabet can help you understand how sounds are made in
English. Most dictionaries use the phonemic alphabet to show the pronunciation of words.
The vowels: The twelve vowel sounds are single sounds that can be short as in the word pink or long as in the
word green. Long vowels are shown with a colon (:) following the phonemic symbol eg: gri:n
The diphthongs: The eight diphthongs are two vowel sounds together as in the word clear.
The consonants: The 24 consonant sounds largely match the letters of the alphabet.

Employability skills
What are employability skills?
These are general skills that are useful in all workplace
contexts. All training in Australia includes employability skills.
Employability skills are also known as key skills, core skills,
essential skills, key competencies and transferable skills.
The eight employability skills are:
Communication Planning and organising
Teamwork Initiative and enterprise
Problem solving Learning
Self-management Technology
Why are employability skills important?
To get a job and be successful in the Australian workforce
you need to demonstrate that you have technical skills and
employability skills. Many employers see employability
skills as the most important skills for the workplace.
Employers usually want people to show that they have
these skills in their written job applications and in job
interviews.
How do employability skills relate
to language?
Many of the employability skills depend on language. For
example communicating effectively in the workplace
includes:
listening and understanding speaking clearly and
directly reading independently writing for an
audience showing understanding of other people’s
feelings negotiating responsively understanding
customer needs persuading effectively networking
being assertive sharing information being able
to use languages other than English numeracy skills
How does my language course develop employability skills?
Your English course should be based on a national curriculum. This means that the learning outcomes can be aligned to
employability skills, as shown in these examples.
How do employability skills relate to
cultural knowledge?
Employability skills reflect certain cultural styles that are
valued in Australian workplaces. For example in Australian
workplaces, it is acceptable to:
use first names when talking to managers
make suggestions to improve things in the workplace
joke with workmates
use informal language
socialise with workmates
mix casual conversation with more formal talk eg:
chatting over coffee before a meeting starts.

You can improve your pronunciation by following these self-help steps.
1 Use resources to practise your speaking
Buy a dictionary with phonetic transcriptions for each word.
Use a recorder to record and listen to yourself using English.
Use a notebook to note down questions you have about English.
2 Find a mentor
Find someone whose English pronunciation is clear.
Ask this person to help you with your speaking.
Ask them questions you have about English.
3 Build vocabulary lists
Make a list of technical words used in your profession or workplace or words you need
in the community.
Ask your mentor to record these for you.
Mark the stressed syllables in these words and record them yourself.
Ask your mentor to check your recording.
4 Analyse stretches of speech
Listen to short stretches of speech (about 15 to 20 seconds) from TV, radio or English
learning materials.
Write down what you hear.
Identify content words, stressed words, linked words and stressed syllables.
Discuss your analysis with your mentor.
5 Copy native speakers and learn from your mistakes
Record short TV or radio segments and analyse how the speakers use intonation, pauses and
stress. Mimic what you hear.
Observe strategies used by effective communicators and copy them.
Get to know the typical English pronunciation errors made by speakers of your first language.
Listen for these in your own speech.
Write down words people ask you to repeat. Find out the correct pronunciation and practise
saying the words correctly.
6 Go out into the community to practise your speaking
Make phone calls to inquire about goods and services.
Go to the shops and ask about things for sale.
Join your local library or your local DVD store and borrow English films.
Talk to your neighbours.
Watch TV and listen to the radio.
