Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu
The Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu is a famous taijutsu tradition. Its original name was
Gyokko Ryu Nino. The source of this is from !akuun Ryu Nino.
In ancient Jaan" Gyokko Ryu was the oldest as a Kosshijutsu" and is the main of
Nino Taijutsu. In older times it was Shitojutsu #fingerti techni$ues%" later Kosshijutsu
#finger joint techni$ues%. Koto Ryu Koojutsu is from the Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu
line. &ssociated Ryu are' Gyokushin Ryu Koojutsu and Gikan Ryu Koojutsu"
strongly connected with the Koga Ryu and Iga Ryu styles.
()erything known on Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu is from Takamatsu Senseis Kuden.
The line traces *ack to the +hinese General e,ile Ikai and earlier through its founder"
the +hinese lady -artial &rtist" +ho Gyokko. Ikai taught Gamon .oshi" whose
arentice was Garyu .oshi" who in turn taught !achiryuNyudo" the teacher of
To/awa !akuunsai.... 0ater the Ryu was under the Grandmastershi of -omochi
Sandayu who assed juristriction onto the Toda +lan. In -eiji (ra" Toda Shinryuken
assed it onto Takamatsu Sensei.
!achiryu Nyudo in)ented a secret weaon to deflect sword cuts. It was named
Kyoketsushoge. &n iron ring was attached *y a decided length of roe to the weaons
handle. 1Kyoketsushoge2 meant 1running the mountain2 or 1a high jum2. Gradually
the roe ga)e way to the chain. &nother change was the use of a weight instead of an
iron ring. 0ater differing si/es of Kama were used so now we say Kusarigama to the
weaon #as it is seen )ery much later%.
0ater" the 3th Togakure .aisuke of Togakure Nino took and de)eloed the idea of
the weighted chain e)en further. Instead of one end" he weighted *oth ends and
de)eloed techni$ues that allowed free mo)ement. 4ith such one could $uickly
disaear" this is a Kuden. 5rom a certain -enkyo of the Gyokko Ryu Nino" two
*alls of a si/e to *e hidden in the hand were used as a distractor in disaearance
situations. !igh hilosohic strategy was" in the resence of an enemy to *e in
harmony with him" ne)er challenging *ut welcome with a smile" ne)er showing a fierce

(arth and -an are used. There also e,ists a Gassho Kujikiri with asects of Kongo
#goldmetal%" Suirin #water8ring%" and Kafugassho #fire and winds%. These are Sano
Gassho" or the three treasures. Koto Ryu Koojutsu is the same. Technically there is a
Sandan Kamae #9 ste stances%" and !yohen #uma changes%. &s *asics in Taijutsu
there are Ichimonji" !icho and Jumonji. The Kata is Koo Saryaku !iden with scrolls
titled Joryaku #high le)els%" +huryaku #intermediate le)els%" and Geryaku #lower
le)els%. :ther items are Kuraidori #si/ing u the situation%" Shinshin Shingan #Gods
heart 8 Gods eyes%" tenmon +himon #hea)en earth tactics%... !iden and Kuden e,ist.

The left hand is held out in front of the *ody in the direction of 6ke #left to left%. The right
hand is clenched in Shito Ken" is laced slightly hidden on the inside of the left el*ow. The
sole of the left foot rests on the to of the right calf muscle. The left knee faces 6ke.
This is the attitude that rotects the freedom of F:h/ora ni mautanmashiF #Sky dancing
sirit%.

'Cross posture*
The left foot is slightly in front of the right foot. The arms are crossed at the wrists with
the left in front" at chest height. The hands are in e,tended Shito Ken.
& !enka of this is to dro the *ody weight so that the knees are almost *ent at CDG with
the feet side *y side.
Their are se)eral other kamae within the Gyokko Ryu these are as follows...

The feet are the same as Ichimonji. The right hand is held a*o)e the head" and the left
oints out towards 6ke. The middle" and the ring finger of each hand" touches the
thum*. The little" and inde, fingers are straight.

This is also known as Kumi 6chi
.# S%SH$N N% KAMA& #Also known as Sanshin no Kamae%
The osture is similar to Ichimonji" *ut much lower. The lead hand is straight" and the
rear hand rests on the thigh" out of sight.

6ke is in .aijodan and cut to the lead leg. Tori is in Ichimonji no kamae" and raises to
!icho no Kamae. 6ke then cuts down with Jodan Kiri. Tori stes forward with the left
leg" an turns to the right to face the sword in Jumonji no Kamae.6ke then does a
hori/ontal cut. Tori stes *ack with the left leg droing the arms to the side of the *ody.
Tyical for the Gyokko Ryu is the owerful circular *locks to take away the *alance.
In the Gyokko Ryu it is referred to *lock" and hit with the knuckles.

This rises from underneath the same way the lants grow from the soil. The 5u no kata

Tori lifts the right hand #oen% a*o)e the head. Tori then does a right Sokuyaku Keri.

hand is for *alance. 4hen doing the kick in Kumite it is used like a glo)e to catch a

Nagare%.

If a long Tachi is used" a greater distance is needed. The ste *ack to Ichimonji is greater.
Ae careful to see the distance *etween you and the sword. This sort of training is a most
imortant art of Taihenjutsu.

*ack ushing his *alance *ackwards. Tori laces his right foot on the outside of 6kes left
knee" and ushes with a ush I kick also using the arm lock to take 6ke down. 5inish
with :8Gyaku.

4hen you are in -uso .ori it is imortant that you are side on at an angle to 6ke. 7oint
with your knee. If you face him in -uso .ori lace the heel *ehind his knee.

takes hold of his left hand with the right hand. Tori alies a -usha .ori lock" and dros

4hen you ste *ack in" ste =3G forwards" then turn with the -usha .ori alied. This
will take his *alance away.

follows with a right keri. Tori stes out to the left with the right foot #not Eoko aruki%"
and then walking around kicks u with a left Keri under 6kes leg. &s 6ke turns to his
left" ToriFs left foot dros to the ground" and a left Shito Ken strikes 6ke in the
Autsumetsu.

4hen 6ke kicks" Tori can either stes to the left" and Keri Kaeshi" or he can ste to the
left with Eoko &ruki" and kick with either left or right foot. +an also use Shikan Ken to

and comes *ack to face Tori" and takes hold of his lael with the right hand. Tori takes
6kes hand in the left hand and then alies a 6ra Gyaku with the right hand. Tori alies
the 6ra Gyaku so that 6ke is *ent o)er at the waist" and strikes with a right 6ra Shuto to
6ko. Tori kicks u to 6kes stomach with the right foot" at the same time changing to a
:mote Gyaku" and throwing 6ke.

4hen you take 6ke down with the :mote Gyaku" ste *ehind his legs with your right
foot" the strike with your hi" and aly the :mote Gyaku sending him o)er your hi.

&s you turn from 6raI:mote Gyaku" then kick u. If 6ke does not sin around he still
gra*s with hisright hand. The 6raI:mote Gyaku change is *ecause he is strong" and it
will weaken him. -ake the attack ride your own ace. & good flow is needed to control
6ke. The flow of gradually wraing 6ke in your own ace is imortant.

ushes his right hand against 6ke hand" then u and in" in a rolling motion #-uso .ori%.

I think the jewel of Gyokko Ryu #Jewel Tiger school% may *e understood as a small jewel
shere" or it may *e understood as the (arth" or it may *e understood as the sun.

The Ten Ryaku 6chu Gassho means eace and harmony #all elements from the right

This is called Kohyo Gassho.

The Sanshin no kata is *ased on the fi)e element manifestations (arth" 4ater" 5ire" 4ind"

In the Tenchijin Ryaku no maki it is known as Soshin go8kei go8gyo no kata.
Takamatsu" when writing the word HSanshinH" would use the Kanji for three fingers"
!atsumi uses the Kanji for three hearts. !atsumi says that he cherishes the heart of the
three year old child" and that when he teaches Sanshin" he always thinks of the child that
is three.
6se natural *ody mo)ement when doing the Sanshin no kata.
The imortance of Sanshin is that it is the *asis of all are Taijutsu. The mo)ements are
much more e,aggerated than the Kata of Kihon !ao. The legs" the knees are used
more" and the *ody is lowered more *y *ending the knees. The forms are all related to
HKen Tai Ichi JoH.
The (arth Kata #+hi% reresents the most natural way to strike" with a swinging motion"
which *ecomes a form of unching. This is much in the way as when we swing our arms
as we walk. It is also the groundwork #(arth% of our Taijutsu. The water Kata #Sui%" and
fire kata #Ka% are *oth killing strikes to the neck. The hand u #:mote Shuto% in Sui
reresents the rain dros that fall into the hand from the sky to the earth" Ka is the light.
The hand down containing the 4ater #6ra Shuto%"is ut on the fire utting it out #the
killing strikes%. The 5u #Aoshi ken% strikes to the groin are the area of fertility" and should
sto life *efore it *egins. Eou must as you strike flow with the wind. Ku #Sky8?oid% uses
+hosui .ori. This is when you must ick the flow of the timing" when to *lock" and when
to come in.
4hy +hi Sui etcL
The names are old" and in the ast they were also used for counting for e,amle +hi M ;"
Sui M <. So the names of the kata are not at all that imortant. In a way they are just a
way of counting or num*ering the Kata.
Ki Gata I Torite Kihon Gata
The Ki gata" and the !onshu Goho" ha)e *ecome more commonly known as the kihon
hao" and with in this form they are called Kosshi Kihon Sano" and Torite Kihon Goho.

The techni$ues are the same" e,cet for a few changes. In Torite Kihon goho the Jigoku
dori is remo)ed" and Ganseki Nage is used in itFs lace.
Takamatsu was taught these *y his grandfather Toda -asamitsu. 4hen Takamatsu taught
them to !atsumi he said that they were the foundation stone of the martial arts" and that
he should always ractice them.
The Ki" and Torite Kihon GataFs are imortant" as at least one art of one of these Kata
aears somewere in e)ery Kata. The first two Kata from Jo Ryaku no -aki are made u
of all of these two training le)els.
Takamatsu said to !atsumi'
4hen I was taught the Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu Kihon Gata they were the *asic or
fundamental form. I was also told that Kihon !ao was the origin of all Audo" so I say
earnestly to you #!atsumi% you too make this the *asis and teach it to your students.

The Ichimonji of Gyokko Ryu" has the left arm straight out towards 6ke with the left arm
slightly *ent at the el*ow ointing to the right" with the left hand oen. The right hand is
in Shito Ken tucked neatly into the inside of left el*ow. The right hand should rest a little
on the to of the left el*ow. The left hand should also when in correct kamae" *e ointing
across to the 6kes left shoulder. 4hen 6ke unches to wards you his fist will aear in
the middle *etween the left hand and the right hand. &t this oint Tori should mo)e" and
*lock" *ecause 6ke is in range" and a Jodan 6ke etc" *ecause 6ke is now in range" and
the Jodan 6ke should make contact. This all deends on timing and seed.

The left foot is forward" with the left foot" only slightly facing to the right #hardly
noticea*le%. If you were to look from a*o)e the foot would *e hidden under the left
forearm. 4hen Tori mo)es to a)oid the incoming unch" the right foot faces the direction
that Tori tra)els in. The knee will also *e directly a*o)e the right foot. If they are not" the
*odies *alance is off" and Tori is in danger of toling o)er. This howe)er changes
according to the situation. There is a *order *etween safe" and dangerous. This must *e
determined at the time of the situation. The *odies *alance" along with osition of the
knees" and feet" must all *e a*le to react together at the same time.
4hen e,ecuting the techni$ues of the Gyokko Ryu kee within ;< inch #9> cm% of your
oonent. Kee the flow in a circular motion" and do not sto and start as in Karate.

4hen *locking in the Gyokko Ryu" it should *e remem*ered that these *locks are )ery
owerful. 4hen 6ke strikes" you must mo)e to a)oid the unch" then turn from the his
uwards" swinging the fist into the attacking armFs muscles.

Strike the inside of 6kes wrist" with Nio Ken. This will injure the tendons" and )eins of
the wrists.
Aack of the hand" with Shikan Ken" or Nio Ken. This will injure the small *ones in the
hand" making the fist ainful to clench.
Nagare. 6se Shuto" *ut do not just dro the Shuto into the muscle" e)en though this is
ainful" more ain and damage will occur if at the oint of e,ecuting the Shuto the *ody
weight is droed. It is ossi*le to tear the muscle when doing this.
Aice" use Shuto or Aoshi Ken to the inside or the outside of the arm.
Shoulder joint" dri)e a Shikan Ken into the Joint. Aest when a s wing unch comes in.
