Browns stare down Bengals

Peterson’s return
won’t be expedited

Cleveland dominates
from the start, takes
first in AFC North
CINCINNATI — The
Cleveland Browns took full advantage of Andy Dalton’s miserable night Thursday, dominating the Cincinnati Bengals
24-3 in an AFC North showdown that was shockingly onesided from the outset.
Cleveland (6-3) improved
its best start since 1994 and
moved into a first-place tie
with Pittsburgh in the NFL’s
toughest division.
The Browns also ended one
of their most enduring streaks
of futility. They won a division
game on the road for the first
time since 2008, ending a
streak of 17 consecutive losses.
And they did it with a showing
that suggested they’re finally
for real.
Not the Bengals (5-3-1),
who once again came apart in
the national spotlight. Cincinnati is 18-41 in prime-time
games.
The Browns roughed up
Dalton, who was 10 of 33 for 86
yards with three interceptions
and two sacks. Cleveland controlled the game by rushing for
170 yards.
The game marked the first
since 1986 — when Bernie Kosar and Boomer Esiason were
the quarterbacks — that the intrastate rivals played with first
place on the line so late in the
season. The Browns won that
one 34-3.
And they were in charge
right from the start of this one,
too.
Playing in a cold, gusty
wind, Dalton was repeatedly
off-target and made a big early
mistake. His first pass was high
and incomplete. His next one
was intercepted by linebacker
Craig Robertson, who returned
it to the 18. Five plays later, Ben
Tate went into the end zone
from 4 yards for the lead.
It was the start of a dreadful

half and repeatedly got booed
by the crowd at Paul Brown

Two mistakes by Cleveland
helped the Bengals cut it to 7-3.
Jim Leonhard fumbled a punt,
and Buster Skrine’s pass interference penalty on fourthand-10 extended the drive.
Mike Nugent connected on a

MONDAY’S GAME
Carolina
at Philadelphia
(ESPN) 7:30
Bye: Houston, Indianapolis, Minnesota, New England, San Diego, Washington

The Browns straightened
up after that turnover. The
Bengals kept making mistakes.
Kevin Huber’s 25-yard punt
into the wind set up a 59-yard
touchdown drive by the
Browns, highlighted by Brian
Hoyer’s completions of 17 and
22 yards to Travis Benjamin.
Isaiah Crowell carried the last
two yards for a 14-3 lead early
in the second quarter.
Cleveland wanted to get its
running game back on track af-

ter three subpar games. The
Browns ran for 81 yards in the
first half, controlling the ball
and the tempo. Billy Cundiff ’s
32-yard field goal made it 17-3
at halftime.
The Browns essentially put
it away late in the third quarter
when Hoyer completed a 28yard pass to tight end Gary
Barnidge in the middle of tight
coverage. Terrance West dived
in from 1 yard out for a 24-3
lead that sent some Bengals
fans to the exits.
There was an honored guest
for the game — 4-year-old
Leah Still, who is fighting cancer and flew in from Philadelphia to see her father play for
the first time. Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still has
worked with the team to raise
more than $1 million for research and treatment of pediatric cancer.
Strong wrote “Leah Strong”
on the eye black strip across his
face, and police officers at the
game had his No. 75 on the
back of their uniforms. The
team presented a check to Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati
after the first quarter with Leah
on the field.
Both teams were missing
some of their top players to injuries because of the limited
time to recover from Sunday
games.
The Bengals had two reserves starting at linebacker in
place of Vontaze Burfict and
Rey Maualuga. Running back
Giovani Bernard was out for a
second straight game with a
sore shoulder and hip. Right
tackle Andre Smith was inactive with a sprained left ankle.
And cornerback Leon Hall was
recovering from a concussion.
Cleveland was missing tight
end Jordan Cameron to a concussion and leading receiver
Andrew Hawkins, who had a
sore knee and thigh. Cornerback Justin Gilbert left in the
first quarter with a heel injury.

NFL alerts Vikings
star that it will begin
formal review of case
MINNEAPOLIS — If
Adrian Peterson is allowed to
return to the Minnesota Vikings this season, the reunion
won’t happen swiftly.
The NFL formally began a
review of the star running
back’s case for
potential
punishment
the
under
league’s perconsonal
duct policy.
The NFL inADRIAN
formed PePETERSON
on
terson
Thursday
that his status on paid leave
from the Vikings will not
change until completion of the
process.
“The NFL has requested
that Peterson submit relevant
information regarding his case
and meet with designated experts who will make recommendations for the Commisconsideration,”
sioner’s
spokesman Brian McCarthy
said. “Peterson also will have
the opportunity to have a hearing prior to the issuance of any
discipline.”
Peterson pleaded no contest in Texas on Tuesday to
misdemeanor reckless assault,
down from a felony charge of
child abuse for disciplining his
4-year-old son with a wooden
switch.
A few hours after the NFL
released its update, the NFL
Players Association issued a
statement demanding efficiency and consistency.
“Our union worked with
the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings and Adrian’s representatives on a mutual agreement
pending the adjudication of
his legal case. Now that his legal matter is resolved, we be-

lieve it is Adrian’s right to be
treated in a manner that is consistent with similar cases under our collective bargaining
agreement. We will pursue any
and all remedies if those rights
are breached,” the NFLPA said.
Rice hearing wraps up:
Ray Rice’s appeals hearing for
his NFL suspension concluded
Thursday after two days of testimony. Rice and his wife Janay
Rice left the hearing separately
about three hours apart after
each testified at the New York
office of a neutral arbiter.
Thearbitration hearing will
determine whether the NFL
overstepped its authority in
modifying a two-game suspension of Rice, making it indefinite after video of the running
back hitting his wife was released by TMZ.

AROUND THE LEAGUE
Baltimore: CB Jimmy
Smith will miss the remainder
of the season with a left foot injury suffered against Cincinnati on Oct. 26. The injury was
initially diagnosed as a sprain,
but the Ravens revealed
Thursday that it will require
surgery.
Buffalo: RB Fred Jackson
(groin) was limited in practice
for a second day in a row. The
Bills have not determined his
availability for this week’s
game. ... WR Sammy Watkins
(groin) also missed practice.
Pittsburgh: SS Troy Polamalu (knee sprain) has been
ruled out of Sunday’s game
against the Jets.
San Francisco: Defensive
coordinator Vic Fangio said
that LB Patrick Willis’ recovery
from a toe injury is taking longer than expected, and he
could miss his third straight
game Sunday in New Orleans.
... Fangio also said that there is
a50-50 chance NT Glenn Dorsey will make his regular-season debut Sunday.
