What were you trying to do?
--------------------------After upgrading OBIEE to 11.1.1.7 from 11.1.1.6.5 we are not able to add
users to application roles in weblogic EM. When we search of the users with
search string in principal section the user is not displayed. When we search
for the user with search string in display name section it returns the user
without principal name. When we try to add the user it is throwing a java
error
"JAVA.LANG.NULLPOINTEREXCEPTION "

What should have happened?

-------------------------Should have been able to add a user to a new Role after upgrading.

I have attached the AdminServer Log and emoms log. The error was produced at

3.5.1 Configuring the User Name Attribute In the Identity Store
3.7 Configuring a New Trusted User (BISystemUser)
Everything was working as expected before the upgrade
2) What are you using as your security provider?
'ActiveDirectoryAuthenticator'
3) Does this occur on a freshly installed system, or only on systems which
have been upgraded from OBIEE 11.1.1.6.x?
We do not have a fresh install to try on. It occurs on the systems which have
been upgraded from OBIEE 11.1.1.6.5
4) Which browser version(s) does this reproduce with?
FireFox 12.0 and IE 9
5) Please upload the WLS admin server log, and state the time when the issue
was reproduced. (Or even better, clear out the log, reproduce the issue, and
then send the log)
I have uploaded the Adminsever log and emoms log
6) Please clarify the *exact* steps taken to reproduce the issue.
step 2: go to obi application roles and select any application role
step 3: Click add and in the next screen click the 'Add'
step 4: In the pop up window select user from the drop down
step 5: search for user in the principal name section and nothing returns
step 6: search the user in the display name section and the user returns
step 7: select the returned user and click ok and we get this java error.
Note: in version 11.1.1.6.x when we click 'Add' in the pop up window when we
select User from he drop down option we have only one text box for searching
principal name. We are in 11.1.1.7 we have two text boxes 'Principal name'
and 'Display Name'

Based on the feedback above, I had the cust do the following test:
The test was to do the following:
1. Change virtualize = false and add the needed roles.
2. Set virtualize = true again.
3. Test and confirm all users can connect correctly.
This worked and all of the users are able to connect. So this is a good short
term fix.
Now we need the long term solution. Thx.

OPSS engineer Jerry Ray & I had an OWC with the cust on this yesterday. Jerry
saw the behavior & error, the work-around and understands the issue. I have
provided Jerry with a 11.1.1.7 box where he will implement LDAP and further
test this issue and provide his feedback here.
