Operations Management 2009

Small-Scale Research Project
Interview an organization to find out information on its operations strategy and specific details about one process within the organization. You should devise interview questions for a member of management of your chosen organization so you can understand the following: The organization as a whole Briefly introduce the nature of the organization and the job of the person at the organization who you interviewed (who are they and what do they do). What is the role of operations at the organization (implementing strategy, supporting strategy, driving strategy)? You must give specific examples from the organization to support your answer (‘The manager said they use operations strategy to support the organization’ is not a complete answer). Explain how the organization pursues the five performance objectives. Explain the trade-offs the organization makes and why they choose to make those trade-offs. Provide a visual representation in the form of a polar diagram. What operations strategies are in place at the organization (market requirements perspective, bottom-up perspective, etc)? Again, you must give specific examples from the organization to support your answer. Give an evaluation on how the organization’s strategy compares to theory and make recommendations on how its operations strategy can be improved. One process within the organization Choose one process at the organization and briefly explain the nature of that process. Remember to include the product-service mix the process produces. Explain the process type (professional service, mass processes, jobbing processes, mass service, etc.). You should link what you found in the interviews to theory in your book and give specific examples from the interview. Provide a visual diagram of the process in the form of a process map using the mapping symbols found on page 102 of your Operations Management text book. This should be accompanied by a justification for the process map (explain the nature of each step and how each step leads to the next step). Give a recommendation on how the process can be improved. **This paper should be written in report format; title, introduction, body, conclusion. **At the presentation, you will present your findings to the rest of the class.
