Data versus Information

Data: Raw plain
facts and figures
Information: When
data is Processed
and Organized to
make it Useful.

Science and Technology

Science:
the body of knowledge obtained by methods of
observation
the pursuit of knowledge about the material
world. By its very nature, science is
unpredictable. (Blake L. White)

Technology
Interface of society and
science
The creation of artifacts
and systems to
meet people's needs
Science + Imagination =
Technology

Technology
Technology: the conscious
attempt to apply our
understanding about the
universe to accomplish some
specific, material end (to
benefit society): to cure a
disease, to make a cleaner
car, or to provide 500
channels of entertainment. It
is predictable and
controllable. (Dr Alan J.

Friedman)

ConstelTechnologyrion

Communication
The process of attempting
to impart information
from a sender to a
receiver with the use of
a medium (Wikipedia)
Many mediums to
achieve this goal
For ICT purposes we
mean electronic medium

Information and Communication Technology

Diverse set of technological tools and resources
used to communicate, and to create, disseminate,
store, and manage information.
These technologies include computers, the
Internet, broadcasting technologies (radio and
television), and telephony (Wikipedia)
Key component of ICT is still the Computer

What is a Computer
Computer computes
Programmable, multiuse machine that accepts
data and figures and processes it into usable
information.

Charles Babbage (Famous mathematician, Professor
at Cambridge University, Chair of Newton)
1833, made a design of a computing device

Father of the computer

Computer
The first use of the word "computer" recorded in
1613
A person who carried out calculations, or computations

From the end of the 19th century onwards though, the

word began to take on its more familiar meaning
A machine that carries out computations
A computer is a programmable machine that receives input,
stores and manipulates data, and provides output in a useful
format.

operate the computer.
Today, almost every item we use is made by using a
computeror--has a computer component built into
it.
WE must become the experts.
