2010 Family Focus

For 2010 our family has chosen to use Pres. Monson’s General Conference Talk “What have I done for Someone Today?” (Nov.2009 Ensign p.84).
Hopefully our growing family will learn to think of others more & spread love at home & on earth!

Today?” Theme: “What have I done for Someone Today?”

Scripture: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Song: Have I done any Good in the World Today? Pg. 223

Galatians 5:14

“A few years ago I read an article written by Jack McConnel. He grew up in the hills of SW Virginia in the US as one of seven children of a Methodist minister and a stay-at-home mother. Their circumstances were very humble. He recounted that during his childhood, every day as the family sat around the dinner table, his father would ask each one in turn, “And what did you do for someone today?” The children were determined to do a good turn every day so they could report to their father that they had helped someone. Dr. McConnell calls this exercise his father’s most valuable legacy, for that expectation and those words inspired him and his siblings to help others throughout their lives. As they grew and matured, their motivation for providing service changed to an inner desire to help others.”

Action: Action: Action:

Ask at the dinner table, “And what did you do for someone today?” Have the words “What have I done for Someone Today?” made up in vinyl lettering to stick above our front door. Make a Bookmark for each family member which says our theme, scripture and song. They can use it throughout the year.

Additional Ideas:

Hold an FHE on this topic every other month. Introduce the “warm

fuzzy” jar for your family to fill throughout the year. Make a video of the family doing something for others (video tape various service projects and then watch them at the end
of the year party). Memorize several scriptures throughout the year on this topic.

Bookmark Instructions Print on white cardstock and then cut out. Cut a rectangle of fun colored cardstock slightly larger and glue both sides of your printed bookmark to it leaving a border of colored paper all around. You can now laminate and then punch a hole and add a ribbon!

What have I done for Someone Today? What have I done for Today? Someone Today?

Quotes from Pres. Monson’s Talk
– read and discuss with your family!
“What have I done for Someone Today? ( Nov. Ensign 2009, pg. 84-87)

“The needs of others are ever present, and each of us can do something to help someone.”

“I believe the Savior is telling us that unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives.”

“How often have you intended to be the one to help? And yet how often has day-to-day living interfered and you’ve left it for others to help, feeling that “oh, surely someone will take care of that need.”

“Find someone who is having a hard time or is ill or lonely, and do something for him or her.”

“We become so caught up in the busyness of our lives. Were we to step back, however, and take a good look at what we’re doing, we may find that we have immersed ourselves in the “thick of thin things.” In other words, too often we spend most of our time taking care of things which do not really matter much at all in the grand scheme of things, neglecting those more important causes.”

“We are surrounded by those in need of our attention, our encouragement, our support, our comfort, our kindness – be they family members, friends, acquaintances, or strangers. We are the Lord’s hands here upon the earth, with the mandate to serve and to lift His children. He is dependent upon each of us.”
